T.G.I.F. with Matt Dawgs: #427

Good day to you all and welcome to We Want Insanity. I am your host for today, Matt Dawgs and this is my column. Today is the end of the work week and the time to look back at all the goings-on over the past seven days as I wrap it up with a bow and spout it out bit by bit. Buckle up. Enjoy the ride.

IMPORTANT MATT NOTE:: I am hoping that you readers have taken the time to lend a hand and donated to the JAIDAN STRONG cause for me. I’d really appreciate it if you did; as little as $5 can go a long way. If not, it isn’t a big deal but please at least SHARE THE LINK. I get that finances can be tough for some but taking the time to share a link via your social media doesn’t cost a dime. I’d appreciate it greatly as one of your friends or family members may be able to help out. Thanks.

- Samoa Joe in his interview with Renee Young: “Because of me, Dean Ambrose is a stay at home husband living off his wife’s paycheck.”. F*CKING GOLD. They need to strap a rocket to his back and made him Universal Champ or move him to Smackdown and let him rock the WWE title. He is so awesome and is exactly what Brock should be except Brock is on TV periodically instead of full time.

- Also, such great chemistry between Joe and Reigns. They work incredibly together and are so fun to watch. Upsetting that Reigns got the clean win though since they’ve constantly mentioned that Reigns can’t beat him. I feel they should have saved Reign’s win for the blow off of the feud.

- WWE used a Brock Lesnar appearance and paid him his usual payment for that closing segment of Raw. Wow. I wish I had money to burn like that. SMH.

- RAW was a ho-hum show. I don’t get why Seth Rollins and Jason Jordan were all buddy buddy when they defeated the Bar last week to win the WWE RAW Tag Team Titles and then all of a sudden this week Rollins is against Jordan and actually said when he cornered him for his match against Cesaro that he was going out there to watch him lose. Um….what?

- Holy sh*t was Booker T awful this week. I mean more than he usually is. He legit said on commentary that NEVER in WWE history has a tag team in their first match won the titles. He said this. In WWE history that has apparently never happened despite the fact that it has been happening regularly dating back to at least 1996 when Shawn Michaels and Steve Austin won the tag team titles in their first match as a team and has been used as a tool to further Wrestlemania storylines forever and a constant in the career of Steve Austin. See the list below and see how many of these “long established” tag teams you remember being champions.

- LIST OF WWE TAG TEAMS WHO WON THE TITLES IN THEIR FIRST MATCH (Sometimes while feuding with each other)

  • ”Stone Cold” Steve Austin & “The Heartbreak Kid” Shawn Michaels
  • ”Stone Cold” Steve Austin & Dude Love
  • ”Stone Cold” Steve Austin & The Undertaker
  • The Rock & Mankind
  • Mankind & Al Snow
  • ”Stone Cold” Steve Austin & Triple H
  • Chris Jericho & The Rock
  • Booker T & Test
  • Rico & Rikishi
  • Edge & Hulk Hogan
  • “Nature Boy” Ric Flair & “Rowdy” Roddy Piper
  • John Cena & Shawn Michaels
  • Batista & John Cena
  • CM Punk & Kofi Kingston
  • Kurt Angle & He Who Shall Not Be Named
  • Eddie Guerrero & Tajiri (replacing the injured Chavo Guerrero)
  • Rey Mysterio & Rob Van Dam
  • Batista & Rey Mysterio
  • Matt Hardy & MVP
  • Edge & Chris Jericho
  • Chris Jericho & Big Show (replacing the injured Edge. Edge and Jericho were stripped)
  • John Cena & David Otunga (as Nexus)
  • John Cena & Miz
  • - By the way, Jordan is a good solid worker. This angle with Angle (Pun intended) needs to be dropped and he needs to turn heel and NOT be Kurt Jr. and just claim it was all a set up to get an advantage with his “dad” being GM. They have to something because the crowd just doesn’t give a sh*t about him either way and no reaction from fans is as dead in the water as you can get.

    - I am praying and hoping that they don’t have Asuka lose to Alexa Bliss even if it is some sort of screw job finish. Asuka shouldn’t be losing anytime soon. But her submitting Alexa, even in a non-title will obviously lead to a title match. Whether at the Rumble which makes no sense since Asuka announced herself for it or one of the RAW’s before the Rumble, she needs to win the title. Just swap her and Alexa’s positions.

    - For those wondering, Enzo Amore was legitimately hospitalized prior to RAW due to the flu. His hospitalization was written into the show as an angle but he was sick and forced to miss RAW. He got sick at the live event the night before in Toronto and was sent to a hospital in Toronto but he didn’t want to go and instead said he’d go to Miami. Upon arriving in Miami, he went to the hospital but they wanted to keep him overnight. He refused and checked himself out of the hospital and was still willing to work against Cedric Alexander. WWE however refused to let him wrestle for fear of him being contagious and spreading an outbreak like they had two months ago with Bray Wyatt, Bo Dallas, Jojo and Roman Reigns so they quarantined him to his hotel room to get rest and he is expected back next week. Props to Enzo for being a trooper and old school as to wanting to work through illness.

    - Even though he is cleared, Enzo was pulled from the Mixed Match challenge and will be replaced despite it being 2 weeks away.

    - Despite making it to RAW and working, Braun Strowman missed all the live events leading to RAW over last weekend with the flu, probably the same case that Enzo had. He was said to be violently ill and WWE officials sent him home not wanting him to wrestle.

    - So funny to see the crowd want Strowman to power slam people over and over and over again. It’s comical as they get louder and louder each time he does it.

    - Kane and Strowman fighting over who the “Alpha Monster” is. That is NO COINCIDENCE that they started using the word Alpha this week. Just saying.

    - Finn Balor teaming with Gallows and Anderson was pretty cool. I think it is time for a Finn heel turn. Team him with The Club (are they even called that anymore or did they officially change their name to the “Good Brothers” or the “Nerds”?) and build to an eventual confrontation/match with the Shield for Summerslam.

    - Why is Goldust a cruiserweight? Don’t get me wrong, love him and he absolutely should be featured better because he can help younger talent develop in the ring but cruiserweights? Why not feud him with someone who can benefit more like Elias or Tye Dillinger on Smackdown?

    - The only good that came out of the Lesnar angle was him sitting up from the chokeslam by Kane and laughing. No idea why Strowman didn’t come out to get in on the fun especially since Lesnar isn’t advertised for next week.

    - Becky Lynch returned to Smackdown this week as she has been in Europe filming “The Marine 6” starring the Miz. Speaking of Miz, he returns to RAW next week.

    - I still don’t get this Dolph Ziggler angle. He was at TV this week but wasn’t used for obvious reasons but this angle is weird.

    - Benjamin and Gable are solid heels. They need to be more heel like however but this week was a start with them winning the tag titles only to have the decision reversed. That was good stuff.

    - In an interview with Sports Illustrated, Daniel Bryan put it in plain black and white by noting that if he isn’t in a match at Wrestlemania in April then it is safe to assume that he isn’t wrestling for WWE again. He does make sense from an angle perspective as the stuff going on with Shane looks to be leading to Mania so if they don’t cap it at that show then there is no point of returning later to wrestle. He did note that he appreciates the strict protocol of going through the process of getting cleared by WWE and understands their point of view. He also reiterated that if any test he takes or any specialist he sees says with 100% certainty that he should not wrestle again, he won’t. But he also noted that he has been cleared by quite a few doctors and been told that there is no reason why he shouldn’t be able to wrestle.

    - There are some people within the company that are speculating that the booking of Bryan as of late is leading to WWE trying to turn him into a heel feeling that a heel turn will hurt his marketability when he inevitably becomes a free agent next fall. Believe me, it won’t. But they feel that letting him leave on a sourer note is better for them to hurt his aura rather than let him leave as the big star that he is.

    - WWE announced this week that WWE Hall of Famer Beth Phoenix will be doing commentary for the Mixed Match challenge. She will be joining Michael Cole and Corey Graves. The show begins on January 16th at 10:00 pm on Facebook. It is a single elimination mixed tag team tournament.

    - Kurt Angle revealed on Wednesday the first RAW team of Braun Strowman & WWE Raw Women’s Champion Alexa Bliss, Finn Balor & Sasha Banks and Apollo Crews & Nia Jax. Daniel Bryan countered by announcing WWE Smackdown Women’s Champion Charlotte & Bobby Roode, Rusev & Lana and Jimmy Uso & Naomi as teams. Crews is the replacement for Enzo Amore who Kurt Angle pulled from the tournament due to the flu. Pulling Amore despite him being cleared to wrestle now makes sense for storyline purposes because he would have been partnered with Nia Jax.

    - WWE U.K. Champion Pete Dunne successfully defended the U.K. title at a Progress show in London against Jack Gallagher last week.

    - T.J. Perkins returned to 205 Live this week following an injury.

    - The January 19th 205 Live house show event being held in Kingston Rhode Island has been cancelled with WWE citing “routing and scheduling” issues. Translation: POOR TICKET SALES. The 20th live event in Lowell Massachusetts and 21st in Poughkeepsie New York are still going to take place as scheduled. Translation: THE HAVE ENOUGH TICKETS SOLD TO PROCEED.

    - Candice LeRae was backstage at the NXT tapings this week. She is currently in process of signing with the promotion and is awaiting her medicals to come back before she can begin in NXT.

    - Jazzy Gabert, the big German looking woman from the Mae Young Classic that got SUPER OVER with the crowd despite losing to Abby Laith in the first round of the tournament revealed on the Edge and Christian podcast that she was offered a WWE contract however it was rescinded during her medical checkup by the company due to the revelation that she has 3 herniated discs and bones all over the place in her neck. She is going to require neck surgery. Her hope is to have the surgery and recover so that she can attempt to re-join WWE and get her contract offered again. The only issue is that at age 35, the neck surgery she will require will keep her out of action for about 14 months so that’s a long way from coming back and getting into ring shape again. It’ll be about 2 years before she sees a WWE ring and that is unfortunate.

    - WWE Hall of Famer Jim Ross; who turned 66 this week confirmed that he and fellow Hall of Famer Jerry “The King” Lawler are both signed to appear at the 25th Anniversary of RAW show in roles to be determined. I fully expect them to announce the show being held at the Manhattan Center while Cole, Booker T and Corey Graves host the Barclay’s Center show.

    - Actress/Model Chrissy Tiegen was asked by Sports Illustrated what her favorite sporting event was. Tiegen revealed that she has such a blast attending Wrestlemania (Her husband singer John Legend sang America the Beautiful one year) but she was disappointed because she couldn’t stay till the end of the show and had to leave early. This tweet prompted Stephanie McMahon to reply to her offering her and her husband tickets to this year’s event.

    - After I went to press last Friday, it was revealed that Chris Jericho announced on his podcast that he and the rest of the “Jericho Network” which includes “Keeping it 100” with Konnan and “Killing the Town” with Lance Storm and Cyrus Don Callis (As well as two Rock and Roll podcasts that I don’t listen to or know anything about) are leaving Podcast One to go to join Westwood One. You can find it the using the same outlets that you previously listened to it.

    - Speaking of Jericho, he is going to do a few more dates with New Japan and even if he wasn’t, isn’t penciled into the plans for Wrestlemania as he is performing in France with Fozzy during the Royal Rumble and has dates all the way through Mania.

    - Brian Pillman Jr., after training for a year with Lance Storm made his independent wrestling debut last weekend in Indianapolis Indiana.

    - For the 25th Anniversary of RAW, WWE recreated the original opening of the show using THE CURRENT ROSTER.

    - Props to Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson as “Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle” despite being number 2 for the 2nd week in a row at the box office actually drew more money on New Years Day than #1 “Star Wars: The Last Jedi”.

NXT TAKEOVER: PHILADELPHIA is on Saturday, January 27th, 2018 from Philadelphia Pennsylvania and the line-up is as follows:

  • NXT TITLE: Andrade Cien Almas © w/Zelina Vega vs. Johnny Gargano
  • NXT WOMEN’S TITLE: Ember Moon © vs. Shayna Baszler
  • NXT TAG TEAM TITLES: The Undisputed Era © (Bobby Fish & Kyle O’Reilly) vs. The Authors of Pain (Akam & Rezar) w/Paul Ellering
  • EXTREME RULES MATCH: Adam Cole vs. Aleistar Black
  • Lars Sullivan vs. Killian Dain vs. Roderick Strong
  • WWE ROYAL RUMBLE PPV is on Sunday, January 28th, 2018 from Philadelphia Pennsylvania and the line-up is as follows:

  • WWE UNIVERSAL TITLE: Brock Lesnar © w/Paul Heyman vs. Braun Strowman vs. Kane
  • WWE TITLE: A.J. Styles © vs. Kevin Owens & Sami Zayn in a Handicap Match
  • WWE MEN’S ROYAL RUMBLE MATCH: Elias/Randy Orton/Shinsuke Nakamura/John Cena/Finn Balor/Baron Corbin
  • WWE WOMEN’S ROYAL RUMBLE MATCH: Naomi/Asuka/Ruby Riott/Liv Morgan/Sara Logan/Natalya/ Sasha Banks/Bayley/Sonya Deville/Mandy Rose/Paige/Lana/Tamina/Carmella
  • Finals of the U.S. Title Tournament: TBD vs. TBD

    - “Cowboy” James Storm is officially done with Impact Wrestling as he lost a “Loser Leaves Town” match to American Top Team leader Dan Lambert. Storm is in real life a free agent and is not coming back to Impact. Hopefully he gets another opportunity in NXT as he could be a big help to younger talent there. The only problem is, I don’t see the upside in him that Bobby Roode has and thus do not see him doing anything meaningful on the main roster.

    - The April 22nd Impact PPV show will be “Lockdown” thus an all cage match PPV. I always hated this concept. So dumb.

Ring of Honor / Lucha Underground / Independent / International News and Notes:

    - Another year gone, another Wrestle Kingdom in the books. The show by all accounts was excellent from beginning to end. I only was able to watch Kenny Omega vs. Chris Jericho and Kazuchika Okada vs. Tetsuya Naito both of which were excellent. Okada vs. Naito was better than Omega vs. Jericho in my opinion although I did like Omega vs. Jericho. It was what I expected it to be however my only gripe was that it was more “WWE style” than I would have liked as I much rather have seen Jericho try to work a whole match “New Japan Style”. The match worked well however since Japanese fans aren’t accustomed to it.

    - According to New Japan, over 2,500 Americans were in attendance for Wrestle Kingdom which is actually more than any Ring of Honor crowd that attended an ROH show in history. I am not counting their record attendance of 3,200 during Wrestlemania weekend because many of those fans were from Europe attending for Wrestlemania weekend so we do not know how many of those fans were American that weekend.

    - Wrestle Kingdom had a paid attendance of 34, 995 which was the biggest crowd in Japanese wrestling in the last 15 years.

    - Why New Japan didn’t or hasn’t launched an English version of New Japan World is beyond my knowledge when they are working so hard to break into the United States is insanity. So many people had difficulty signing up for the service to see Wrestle Kingdom because the default pages are in Japanese and it isn’t exactly easy to switch to the English version of the page. Even if you do figure it out, the payment portion of the page doesn’t have English translation.

    - For those wondering, it has been confirmed that Chris Jericho’s appearance was NOT a “one off” as he appeared this morning on the New Japan “New Year’s Dash” show attacking Tetsuya Naito following the main event. The two men brawled before being separated.

    - For anyone who was under the belief that Katsuyori Shibata would eventually come back and wrestle again following his brain injury caused by headbutting Kazichika Okada, he revealed in an interview last week that when he recovered, doctors told him he had an 18% chance of survival.

    - New Japan is coming out with “Fire Pro Wrestling 4” this summer for the PS4. For those of you who have NEVER plated Fire Pro Wrestling, it is one of, if not THE most fun pro wrestling game ever made.

    - Tickets for New Japan’s return to the United States in Long Beach California go on sale on January 29th. They are running a new location this year on March 25th as they are running at the 5,300 seat Walter Pyramid located on the campus of Long Beach University.

    - While not revealing the venue or the date as of yet, Cody Rhodes and The Young Bucks did confirm that they have secured their 10,000 seat arena for their show they plan on running in 2018. They do have a specific date set for the show as well and all they have to do is finalize the contracts for the venue.

    - Kota Ibushi will be working the Wrestlemania weekend shows for ROH joining Hiroshi Tanahashi and Kenny Omega.

    - ROH’s new streaming service that they are launching will be called “Honor Club”. They are set to debut in early 2018.

    - Interesting to see that Low-Ki is being listed on the upcoming Arolucha tour later in January.

    - Celeste Bonin (Formerly WWE Diva Kaitlyn) return to wrestling on February 10th for Coastal Championship Wrestling in Florida will be against Rachel Ellering.

    - In an “only in wrestling” story, former WWE star Sid Vicious was scheduled for a rare independent match for AIW in Cleveland but he never boarded his flight and refused to return the promotion’s calls. The promoter of the show called Sid from Hornswoggle’s phone and he answered. He claimed that he wasn’t allowed to board the flight due to…..President Trump’s travel ban due to him having an outstanding speeding ticket and not having his passport on him; never mind the fact that he is an American and had a driver’s license to fly with.

    - R.I.P. to Emily Dole best known for her role as “Mt. Fiji” for Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling (G.L.O.W.) as she passed away earlier this week at age 60.

    MMA News and Notes:

    - While she didn’t win, Holly Holm gave Cristiane “Cyborg” Justino her toughest MMA fight to date as she put the pressure on Cyborg and lost by unanimous decision after 5 rounds. She did get a swollen and black eye due to Cyborg nailing her with some stiff shots but she wasn’t overwhelmed like most opponents. So it was a moral victory and did show that a tough striker can hold her own with Cyborg.

    - Khabib Nurmagomedov missed the birth of his child last week as his wife was in labor back home in Russia while he was in Las Vegas wiping the floor with Edson Barboza. Khabib is in a tough spot because he absolutely should be the next contender for Conor McGregor’s title but if I were a part of team McGregor, I’d be talking Conor OUT of taking this fight any possible way I could as Nurmagomedov would maul Conor in my opinion.

    - Dana White revealed that if Conor McGregor does not fight by Tony Ferguson by March, he is going to be stripped of his Lightweight title and a new champion will be crowned. As much of a fan as I am of Conor and how much he means to the sport of MMA, he is 100% in the wrong for not defending his title in a reasonable fashion. This is not the first time he has held a division hostage for not fighting. He needs to start defending his title or stop fighting period.

    - If McGregor is stripped, Tony Ferguson vs. Khabib Nurmagomedov will fight for the title.

    - UFC held a press conference last week hyping UFC 220 which the company announced would also be the 25th Anniversary Show for the promotion. Stipe Miocic has his hands full as he is looking to break the record of consecutive title defenses by a heavyweight champion but Francis Ngannou noted that Miocic is intimidated by him and that he plans on knocking him out. Volkhan Oezdemir noted that he plans on finishing UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Daniel Cormier rather quickly and it is possible that he can. We may have to knock outs in two title fights at the PPV.

    - UFC President Dana White revealed that his discussions with Floyd Mayweather’s people last week were to discuss UFC’s plans to promote boxing in the future and had nothing to do with Mayweather fighting for UFC.

    - UFC has signed MacKenzie Dern, a 5 – 0 woman fighter who is set to be the next big thing in women’s MMA.

    - Congrats to former UFC Women’s Champion Miesha Tate as she revealed that she is expecting her first child, a baby girl.

    - MMA columnist Mark Aragon was stripped of his UFC credentials following an incident where he reportedly continued calling Cris “Cyborg” a man.

    - Robbie Lawler tore his ACL in his fight with Rafael dos Anjos and will require surgery that will sideline him for several months.

    - James Thompson has received a one-year suspension from Bellator for testing positive for steroids after his December 15th fight in England.

UFC 220 is on Saturday, January 20th, 2018 from Boston Massachusetts and the line-up is as follows:

  • UFC HEAVYWEIGHT TITLE: Stipe Miocic © vs. Francis Ngannou
  • UFC LIGHTHEAVYWEIGHT TITLE: Daniel Cormier © vs. Volkhan Oezdemir
  • UFC ON FOX is on Saturday, January 27th, 2018 from Charlotte North Carolina and the line-up is as follows:

  • Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza vs. Derek Brunson
  • Ovince St. Pruex vs. Ilir Latifi
  • UFC 221 is on Saturday, February 11th, 2018 from Perth Australia and the line-up is as follows:

  • UFC MIDDLEWEIGHT TITLE: Robert Whitaker © vs. Luke Rockhold
  • Mark Hunt vs. Curtis Blaydes

    - THIS LINK is for LIFE. Thank you soldiers. WELCOME HOME BLOG.

    - BONUS Random ARTICLE of the week: Whoa, this is f*cking insane. WOW.

    - BONUS Random ARTICLE of the week PART 1: There are some things in life that are just common sense to me and I don’t think an explanation is needed. This is a tragedy and I am so sorry that an unborn baby lost their life but honestly, come on people. Like, what the f*ck did she think was gonna happen?

    - BONUS Random ARTICLE of the week PART 2: This is not going to end well. I swear to god each and evert tweet I read of his seems like it is coming from a parody account. I have to do a double take to see if it is the official account or not. This f*cking guy. Ugh.

    - BONUS Random ARTICLE of the week PART 3: Actually heard this story last week and thought it was baloney but it has since gained a lot of steam and will rock the NFL if true. All of them are idiots of them for letting this happen. Dynasties shouldn’t be ruined from within. EVER.

    - BONUS Random ARTICLE of the week PART 4: I agree 100% with these people. Her son has a history of stuff like this and she has a history of not watching him. She needs to be held accountable for the lives lost in this situation. It is definitely her fault.

    - BONUS Random ARTICLE of the week PART 5: So it turns out that loved by many, deceased NBA analyst Craig Sager was a scumbag. Who knew?

    - BONUS Random ARTICLE of the week PART 6: The only thing to do is pray because RARELY EVER does someone with over 95% of their body burnt survives. So far so good as she seems to be going through a lot of surgeries in her medically induced coma and is holding on. But it doesn’t look good.

    - The Last Jedi has surpassed a billion dollars at the box office worldwide thus making the “new” franchise (The Force Awakens/Rogue One/The Last Jedi) surpassed $4.1 billion at the box office worldwide. Disney purchased the rights to Star Wars for $4 billion. So with toy sales and other rights fees and earnings such as DVD/streaming releases, Disney is making a profit on Star Wars from here on in as they have recouped their investment.

    - So essentially reshooting a pilot works in most cases as FX has ordered a FULL 10 episode season of the Sons of Anarchy spin-off “The Mayans MC”. The original pilot was panned by executives at FX so much so that they re-casted the LEAD role as well as a few minor roles and re-shot the pilot episode.

    - David Letterman is “unretired” as next Friday he debuts his new Netflix series “My Next Guest Needs No Introduction”. It will be a monthly talk show and the first of his guests in the 6 episode installment will be the first sit down interview with former President Barack Obama since leaving office.

    - Hulu is bringing back the “Animaniacs” in 2020 for two seasons.

    - After asking last week if it was worth binge watching, Fox’s mutant show “The Gifted” has been renewed for a 2nd season.

    - Production on the Spider-Man: Homecoming sequel is set to begin in June for a scheduled July 5, 2019 release date.

    - Actress Rosario Dawson has been confirmed as returning to the Marvel Television Universe as she will guest star in both season 3 of Daredevil and season 2 of Iron Fist.

    - Despite a ton of negative reviews, Netflix has confirmed a sequel to Will Smith’s “Bright”. I still haven’t found the time to see it but hopefully this weekend if possible.

    - Fox’s “The X-Files” is apparently done after this current season as actress Gillian Anderson revealed it is her last hurrah and she isn’t returning.

    - Sorry Game of Thrones fans but HBO confirmed that the show will NOT be returning until 2019. Ouch.
