T.G.I.F. with Matt Dawgs: #393

Good day to you all and welcome to We Want Insanity. I am your host for today, Matt Dawgs and this is my column. Today is the end of the work week and the time to look back at all the goings-on over the past seven days as I wrap it up with a bow and spout it out bit by bit. Buckle up. Enjoy the ride.

MATT NOTE: Apologies in advance for a more condensed version of this column. I was pressed for time this week. Thanks for reading.

- Well...after weeks of asking and asking what a “House of Horrors” match is all about, I finally got my answer. Have you ever heard the saying “Be careful what you wish for because you just might get it”? Well the answer to what a “House of Horrors” match is....A TERRIBLE CONCEPT/MATCH/IDEA. Randy Orton and Bray Wyatt fought in what was possibly the worse idea of a match in WWE history. Just complete and utter sh*t all around.

- Kevin Owens and Chris Jericho flip flopped the U.S. title this week with Jericho winning the title at the PPV and then losing it back on Smackdown. Owens also “injured” Jericho thus explaining his absence for the next several weeks. Jericho is leaving to tour with his band Fozzy through June.

- WWE has a WWE 24/7 Special on Finn Balor airing on May 15th following RAW. The documentary will follow Balor as he recovered from his shoulder surgery last year.

- NXT confirmed that Asuka will defend her NXT Women’s title at Takeover: Chicago in a 4 way against Ember Moon, Ruby Riot and Nikki Cross. I feel like the time is right to take the title off of her. She can also lose the title without losing the fall which is always a good and creative way to take a title by still protecting the champion.

- Former WWE Star Alberto El Patron noted via Twitter last week that the ratings for E!’s Total Divas are down because they are removing all of Paige’s scenes from the show. Yes, he said this and likely believes this.

- Former WWE Star Sean “X-Pac” Waltman as he was scheduled to wrestle in the United Kingdom for IPW over the weekend and went AWOL instead. No one was able to get in contact with him in any way, shape or form for several hours. Eventually Kevin Undergaro who co-hosts the Afterbuzz show with X-Pac noted that he finally got in contact with him and he is ok and just “dealing with issues”. That is usually code for other stuff which would be a shame if that is the case because Waltman had been clean and sober for a long time and hadn’t had any setbacks. Waltman has since released a statement and noted that his issues are NOT substance abuse related. However....according to TMZ, Waltman actually was trying to catch his flight to the U.K. and was arrested at LAX airport on felony drug charges as he attempted to take meth amphetamine pills, 3 cannibis chocolate bars, 2 THC liquid cigarettes and $736 in cash. Between the pills and the cash alone, they believe he was set to make a narcotics sale. That, plus he had an outstanding warrant for a DUI; he was taken into custody and released on $35,000 bond a few days later.

- Kayfabe pal....Titus O’Neil posted some pics on social media of the WWE roster in Rome; including a picture of Roman Reigns taking a photo of something with Braun Strowman standing right next to him. SMH. Come on man. He has since deleted them but the damage was already done and many fans screenshotted them.

- Happy 45th Birthday to Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson.

- While doing press for Guardians of the Galaxy: Volume 2, Dave Batista noted that he is not against returning to wrestling for one last run.

- During an autograph signing last weekend, WWE Hall of Famer Hulk Hogan was asked about a return to WWE and he said that he and Vince have spoken. That was it. No deal signed, nothing agreed upon. Just that they have spoken.

- Charlotte Flair is the latest WWE female to have some photos of her being circulated. As I noted during the Paige scandal, I am not one to circulate pics like these so therefore I will not tell you to google Charlotte Flair leaked pics or to search on such sites as Celeb Jihad, The FappeningBlog, Reddit, etc. because that would be morally reprehensible if I did. But the pics are out there. Nowhere near as explicit as Paige’s photos but nude nonetheless.

- Zack Ryder is medically cleared to return and is working out at the WWE Performance Center in Orlando.

- In a creative way to stay relevant, former WWE Star Jack Swagger will be wrestling independently under the name “Formerly Known As Jack Swagger”.

- This week marked 12 years since the passing of “No Gimmicks Needed” Chris Candido. Probably the nicest man in all of wrestling and well underrated as a talent/worker. Should have absolutely had a better career and honestly had I still been wrestling, my career would have been different as he was a mentor and listener to anyone who wanted advice.

WWE BACKLASH PPV is on Sunday, May 21st, 2017 from Chicago, Illinois and the line-up is as follows:

  • WWE TITLE: Randy Orton © vs. Jinder Mahal w/The Singh Brothers
  • WWE U.S. TITLE: Kevin Owens © vs. “The Phenomenal” A.J. Styles
  • WWE TAG TEAM TITLES: The Usos © (Jimmy & Jey)
  • vs/ Breezango (Tyler Breeze & Fandango)
  • Shinsuke Nakamura vs. Dolph Ziggler

    - There have been no issues with pay under the new regime so far. Everyone including production has been paid on time.

    - When departing TNA for WWE, The Hardys tried to get Jeremy Borash to jump ship but he decided to stay.

    - There was an alleged incident involving an argument between Alberto El Patron and his fiancé WWE Superstar Paige at the last television tapings but no one has details on what it was about.

Ring of Honor / Lucha Underground / Independent / International News and Notes:

    - The main event for the May 12th “War of the Worlds” PPV is decided. The winner of Christopher Daniels vs. Matt Taven will take on Cody and Jay Lethal in a three-way.

    - Adam Cole’s contract is done and he had his “farewell” last weekend. He is not expected back as he is going to NXT. He lost to Matt Taven in his exit match in Minnesota. He is going to work the upcoming “War of the Worlds” shows but is not under contract. He also has a few independent dates coming including a PWG show titled “Cole” which says all you need to know about that event.

    - It appears as if the rematch between Kenny Omega and Kazuchika Okada for the New Japan Title will take place at the Dominion PPV on June 11th in Japan. This will be the rematch from their New Year’s 6-Star match. I fully expect Omega to win the title here and head into the summer, especially the Long Beach California shows, as champion.

    - In an interesting note, former WWE Star and current UFC Fighter CM Punk did an interview earlier this week and was asked about ever returning to wrestling. He noted that it would be his dream to NEVER wrestle for the WWE again but he would consider All Japan or New Japan. The latter is noteworthy because in an interview in Japan, Kenny Omega was asked about new members coming to the Bullet Club and Omega replied that they don’t plan on adding anyone else but he would make an exception for CM Punk or Hulk Hogan. Where there is smoke, there is fire.

    - New Japan’s Tomoaki Honma is now walking on his own again; this following his serious neck injury from several weeks ago. He is unlikely going to be able to wrestle again but the fact that he is walking is a major improvement since he was paralyzed for several days.

    - As for Katsuyori Shibata, he is still hospitalized. While he fully believes he will return to wrestling, many are doubtful. Such a shame that his career ended in such fashion all because of being too stiff.

    - New Japan Pro Wrestling announced the blocks for their Super Junior Tournament. Damn this should be great barring injuries:

    A Block

  • Jushin Thunder Liger
  • Ricochet
  • Dragon Lee
  • Will Ospreay
  • Marty Scurll
  • Taichi
  • Taka Michinoku
  • Hiromu Takahashi
  • B Block

  • Tiger Mask
  • Ryusuke Taguchi
  • Volador Jr
  • ACH
  • Kanemaru
  • Desperado
  • - Akebono is still in serious condition in Japan and it is said to be heart related. I do not know if he is still in a medically induced coma but he is in grave health.

    - Former TNA whatever he was there, Billy Corgan purchased the National Wrestling Alliance. He now has the name, rights, trademarks, titles, etc. I am not actually sure the affect this has on the wrestling business in 2017 or how much he spent for it but I cannot imagine for a second that he spent more than what he was willing to spend on TNA or how much he loaned them during their financial collapse last year. Again, this is all meaningless without talent that can draw or a television deal but to each his own I guess.

    - The CRASH promotion is currently negotiating with TV Azteca in Mexico which would be a fairly big deal for them.

    - I don’t know him either personally or through social media but from a lot of friends, he’s a good person and fun to be around so please keep independent wrestler Wayne VanDyke who wrestles under the moniker of “Richard Delicious” in your thoughts and prayers as he suffered a MASSIVE heart attack last weekend during a match in Florida. He was working a tag when he told his partner that he needed to tag out because he wasn’t feeling well. Upon tagging out, he immediately collapsed and had to be resuscitated while on the ring apron. An ambulance arrived and he had to be revived via CPR in the ambulance and then again at the hospital. So essentially he had 3 heart attacks in a short period of time. His ribs were broken and his lung punctured during all of the CPR live saving measures and following his 3rd heart attack, he had to have his body temperature lowered to prevent further attacks and he was placed in a medically induced coma. Terrible news all around. He is expected to be taken out of his coma today so that doctors can evaluate brain function and his heart before deciding on the next set of steps.

    MMA News and Notes:

    - Anderson Silva has notified UFC that if he does not get an interim title match against Yoel Romero on June 3rd then he will retire from MMA. Considering that Michael Bisping has been pushing for a fight with George St. Pierre for the title, I cannot for the life of me understand why they need to create an interim title. On top of that, why in the world does Silva deserve a title shot? Honestly. And even worse is that he is willing to fight Romero when he was offered Rockhold. That is mind blowing because realistically Romero can kill him. Romero is all for it as he is patiently waiting for Bisping vs. GSP to take place so he can get the winner and had noted in the past that he will sit out until then but is willing to fight Silva and only Silva.

    - Despite no deal in place yet, George St. Pierre is teasing that his eventual middleweight title fight against Michael Bisping will be held at Madison Square Garden in New York.

    - Dominick Cruz is gunning for the winner of Cody Garbrandt vs. T.J. Dillashaw.

    - Vitor Belfort vs. Nate Marquardt has been confirmed in what is likely Vitor’s retirement fight for June 3rd in Rio de Janeiro.

    - UFC has confirmed that they are launching a 4th Women’s Division at 125 lbs. That would add a new championship in addition to their 115 lbs. title held by Joanna Jedrzejczyk, 135 lbs. held by Amanda Nunez and 145 lbs. division held by Germaine de Randamie. The tournament will be held on The Ultimate Fighters with the final two fighting for the championship. This also kind of sticks it to former UFC fighter Valerie LeTourneau as she left UFC for Bellator last week mainly because she had a tough weight cut to 115 lbs. and wasn’t big enough to fight at 135 lbs.

    - Speaking of Nunes, she has verbally agreed to defend the title at UFC 213 on July 8th vs. Valentina Schvchenko.

    - As for Germaine de Randamie, there are rumors that she is retiring which is extremely weird since she just won the title. Her people say she is taking time off due to injury but some have said she isn’t coming back at all.

    - Nate Diaz was offered a fight vs. Tony Ferguson and he had accepted before changing his mind because he feels that Ferguson’s next fight should be against Conor McGregor.

    - Former World Series of Fighting Lightweight Champion Justin Gaethje has signed with UFC. He is 17 – 0.

UFC 211 is on Saturday, May 13th, 2017 from Dallas Texas and the line-up is as follows:

  • UFC HEAVYWEIGHT TITLE: Stipe Miocic © vs. Junior Dos Santos
  • UFC WOMEN’S STRAWWEIGHT TITLE: Joanna Jedrzejczyk © vs. Jessica Andrade
  • Eddie Alvarez vs. Dustin Poirier
  • Frankie Edgar vs. Yair Rodriquez
  • Ben Rothwell vs. Fabricio Werdum
  • Henry Cejudo vs. Sergio Pettis
  • Demian Maia vs. Jorge Masvidal
  • UFC 212 is on Saturday, June 3rd, 2017 from Rio De Janeiro Brazil and the line-up is as follows:

  • UNDISPUTED UFC FEATHERWEIGHT TITLE: Jose Aldo © vs. Max Holloway ©
  • Anderson Silva vs. TBD
  • Karolina Kowalkiewicz vs. Claudia Gadelha
  • Vitor Belfort vs. Nate Marquardt
  • UFC 213 is on Saturday, July 8th, 2017 from Las Vegas Nevada and the line-up is as follows:

  • UFC WELTERWEIGHT TITLE: Cody Garbrandt © vs. T.J. Dillashaw
  • UFC WOMEN’S BANTAMWEIGHT TITLE: Amanda Nunes © vs. Valentina Shevchenko
  • Robbie Lawler vs. Donald Cerrone
  • Anthony Pettis vs. Jim Miller

    - BONUS Random ARTICLE of the week: Honestly, the guy is the most powerful person in the world. He is a billionaire on top of that and has surrounded himself with some of the most intelligent people in the world in his cabinet. There is absolutely NO REASON for something like this to happen. #FactsDontMatter

    - BONUS Random ARTICLE of the week PART 8: In the midst of everything going on with airlines right now, why in the world would Delta do this? SMH.

    - BONUS Random ARTICLE of the week PART 9: Sorry, while a sh*tload of money, still isn’t enough for the loss they suffered.

    - BONUS Random ARTICLE of the week PART 10: Damn. This sucks.

    - Wrestlers are dominating the box office as ”The Fate of the Furious” remained #1 at the theaters last week for the 3rd straight week. That however is expected to end today as “Guardians of the Galaxy” came out last night and is expected to crush all competition this weekend to debut at #1. I saw Furious 8 last weekend and it was exactly what I expected it to be. A fun, action filled popcorn movie. Honestly, no franchise does it better. Check your brain at the door upon entering and enjoy the insanity of the film. If you go in thinking you are about to watch an acting tour de force like The Godfather Part 2 then you will be incredibly disappointed. But if you go in knowing you are going to see a film where all logic is thrown out the window and you are just going to watch some crazy sh*t with one liners thrown in, you will think it is the greatest thing since sliced bread. It is a great thing that they turned this franchise around from action films that had semi-reasonable plots to just complete craziness for the sake of craziness because they now have a worldwide phenomenon with it and they can continue to bleed money from customers until they decide to stop making them or they decide to shy away from this formula. Plus, as shown with the death of Paul Walker, they can freshen up the cast by removing actors from the plot. They can eventually make these without Vin Diesel and they are already discussing a spin-off with Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham.

    - As is expected since arc 1 of the season, Gabriel Luna will reprise his role as Robbie Reyes/Ghost Rider in the season finale of Marvel’s: Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. still no word on whether the show is getting picked up for an additional season but it definitely should after how fantastic this one was.

    - Speaking of S.H.I.E.L.D., this week’s episode was FANTASTIC. Simply awesome from beginning to end.

    - Marvel’s “The Runaways” got a full series order for Hulu.

    - Better Call Saul. WOW. “A bullet to his head would have been far too humane.” Giancarlo Esposito is simply fantastic and watching his story to how he became the Gus we loathed in Breaking Bad as well as Mike and Jimmy/Saul is amazing.

    - I was right!!! Savitar on the Flash is exactly who I expected it to be. I see a lot of hate for the “big reveal” but I am fine with it. I thought it was ok.

    - Based on the latest issue of The Walking Dead comic book, a lot of fans are NOT going to be happy with the TV show next season or the following depending on how much they flash forward. People are going to be PISSED.
