T.G.I.F. with Matt Dawgs: #396

Good day to you all and welcome to We Want Insanity. I am your host for today, Matt Dawgs and this is my column. Today is the end of the work week and the time to look back at all the goings-on over the past seven days as I wrap it up with a bow and spout it out bit by bit. Buckle up. Enjoy the ride.

MATT NOTE: R.I.P. to actor/comedian Christopher “Big Black” Boykin, co–star of MTV’s “Rob and Big” as he passed away unexpectedly at age 45. I personally have never seen an episode of the show but figured it was noteworthy since I’ve seen a million Facebook posts on it. Sleep well big man.

- The following statement says all that needs to be said about RAW on Monday. Raw’s rating on Monday was a 1.89. That is the lowest rated non-holiday episode of Monday Night Raw since 1996. Lowest rated RAW in 21 years. This is exactly the same pattern that happened several years ago with the last brand extension; lack of star power. Fans lose interest in shows when we have the same 4 people feuding in the main event and undercard/jobbers being pushed in prominent positions. Smaller roster, especially spread throughout a 3 hour show, fans lose interest. If you had more stars, more people who are larger than life, maybe we’d have more viewers. It is also majorly damaging when a top star goes down such as the below news item on Braun Strowman. That is just my observation.

- DOWN GOES STROWMAN!!! Braun Strowman has been working through an injured elbow hence why he and Roman Reigns have been just having short brawls on TV and live events. He cannot work through a whole match. It was revealed that he will now require elbow surgery. The extent of the damage is unknown and they will have a better timetable on his recovery once they get in there and clean it out.

- With Strowman out, all plans for RAW on the next two PPV shows are out the window. Strowman vs. Reigns was set to headline the June Extreme Rules PPV with Strowman vs. Brock Lesnar for the Universal Title set to headline July’s “Great Ball of Fire” PPV. WWE is hoping to have Strowman back by July but his bout vs. Lesnar may have to wait to Summerslam meaning that either Seth Rollins or Finn Balor would get Lesnar in July. This also means that Roman Reigns will have to pivot into another feud for now with Bray Wyatt being the likely guy. Moving Wyatt into that slot makes the most sense HOWEVER it would leave Finn Balor without a program.

- P.S. – Say what you want about Strowman because for some reason he still has some detractors. I don’t know why but he does. Anyway, crowd POPPED HUGE when he said after he finishes Reigns off, he wants Brock Lesnar. The fact is that since that comment got over big, fans are into him and believe him to be a monster. That is amazing how WWE turned him into a star the way they did.

- RAW was a boring show on Monday. There is no way around it. It felt like “paint by numbers” and Smackdown was no better. A show featured on the Miz and Dean Ambrose’s feud when they just finished a feud on Smackdown is not interesting. Braun Strowman and Roman Reigns still killing each other isn’t interesting.

- Was it just me or was this an unusually dead crowd for the U.K.?

- Why didn’t they book Kurt Angle for this show again? He hasn’t been in a WWE ring in the U.K. in a decade.

- Samoa Joe and Seth Rollins work well together. They need to be given a good solid 30 minute outing soon. Their TV matches are usually the best thing on RAW so give them time and let them deliver a classic.

- WWE FUN FACT: Despite Goldust and R-Truth discussing for two weeks in a row that their win/loss record not being any good, as a team going into RAW on Monday, they were actually UNDEFEATED for 2017 on both live events and television. LOL.

- Solid build for Sheamus & Cesaro by having them run the line-up in their gauntlet match. I am really into this team now. WWE has done a good job at making me care.

- I cannot be the only one who doesn’t “get” Zach Gallagher. I mean, he is solid in the ring but the gimmick does absolutely NOTHING for me. Even the Mary Poppins spot. I am completely disinterested when he comes on my television. Incredibly enough, the crowd didn’t care either and Gallagher is from the U.K. so that should tell you all you need to know about him.

- Solid booking no? To set up Miz getting a title shot at Dean Ambrose at the PPV, Miz loses CLEANLY to Finn Balor and his finisher in the opening match on RAW and in the main event, Dean Ambrose loses CLEANLY to Bray Wyatt and his finisher. So I am supposed to care about two losers in a title match?

- Question for you. Is Charlotte a babyface or not? I am confused with the fact that she still acts like a heel and ended up arguing with Naomi on Smackdown despite being allies.

- Lana is coming. Now does she get here quicker than Emmalina did on RAW a few months back or does she linger on forever and ever? Also, is she going to wrestle or is she just coming back to “dance”? I hope not wrestle because honestly, she can’t wrestle.

- It is absolutely NOT in Dolph Ziggler’s best interests to ever mention again in a promo that he was a former world champion, former main eventer, a movie star for WWE and then say he is treated like a disease. All that does is highlight the fact that he has had a major fall from grace and isn’t important anymore. It makes him look terrible.

- I get holding off Shinsuke Nakamura’s debut for a PPV to make it seem like a special event. That, plus the fact that his body is beat up and he is 37 years old with a lot more years than that in “ring years”. But it is dragging. They cannot keep doing the same angle week after week. If this was always the plan, they should have held off his debut so they had less shows to repeat the same angle on.

- Side note: I am a big Nakamura fan and the guy can go but this angle is taking some shine off of him. He needs to beat Ziggler in either an incredible match or in quick fashion. He cannot spend 50% of that match selling.

- I am ok with Mahal beating Orton with his finisher leading to the PPV. I will NOT be ok with Mahal beating Orton for the title. I get the whole India thing and I am ok with that. But Mahal is NOT ready to be champion. His character/gimmick still needs work and so does his in-ring work.

- Kevin Owens and A.J. Styles need to be the top guys on Smackdown and this is one of the reasons I mentioned above that both brands are sluggish in viewership. You are eventually going to run out of quality opponents and feuds when you mix brands. Look at it this way, if both brands were together, you’d have a mix of main event and semi-main event talents that look like this:

  • Brock Lesnar
  • Randy Orton
  • Roman Reigns
  • Braun Strowman
  • A.J. Styles
  • Kevin Owens
  • Chris Jericho
  • Seth Rollins
  • Samoa Joe
  • Bray Wyatt
  • Finn Balor
  • Dean Ambrose
  • The Miz
  • Shinsuke Nakamura
  • Baron Corbin
  • Sami Zayn
  • Dolph Ziggler
  • Now divide that in half and you become extremely limited on main event talents/acts to mix together. It becomes difficult to create fresh matches and you don’t have enough stars to fill those blanks in.

    - Emma was injured during the European tour and had her arm in a sling. She is awaiting diagnosis but it is a shoulder injury. She was pulled from the remainder of the European tour and sent home to the United States to get evaluated here.

    - Rusev returns to Smackdown next week as he is confronting Shane McMahon regarding his future title shot. He is expected to be cleared to return to action shortly if he hasn’t been cleared already.

    - Kofi Kingston is expected to be medically cleared by the end of the month meaning the New Day will return to television in June most likely.

    - I just caught up on the “Who is Roderick Strong” video packages being done in NXT. Holy sh*t is this some of the best work WWE has done in trying to get someone over in forever or what? Fantastic stuff by WWE here and if WWE was willing to do stuff like this for everyone, they would absolutely be onto a way to create new main event level talents. Go check them out if you can.

    - WWE has confirmed that the U.K. shows that were taped over the weekend to air on the WWE Network will be commentated by “Good Ole” Jim Ross and Nigel McGuinness. The shows are set to air at the end of the month and will be broken up into one-hour shows airing for most of the summer.

    - At the above mentioned tapings, it was announced that Pete Dunne will battle Trent Seven at NXT Chicago on May 20th.

    - As has been noted for months, Stardom’s Kairi Hojo finally confirmed that she is leaving the promotion and coming to NXT.

    - Ember Moon has been removed from the NXT Women’s Title match at Takeover: Chicago due to a shoulder sprain she suffered at the TV tapings a few weeks back. The match is now a three way with Asuka defending against Ruby Riot and Nikki Cross. Moon is expected to be out of action for about 5 more weeks or so.

    - The NXT Women’s tournament is expected to film in Full Sail University on July 13th and July 14th. They are still filling out their rosters for the tournament as well as logistics as to when it will air. It will NOT be live. WWE Hall of Famer Jim Ross is expected to do commentary.

    - Former female winner of Tough Enough, Sara Lee and current NXT star Wesley Blake had a child together on May 1st. Lee won the final season of Tough Enough despite many believing that Mandy Rose (still in NXT and thriving) should have won. She was released less than a year after winning the competition.

    - Can Titus O’Neil stay out of trouble? There is always something with him. From horse playing around with Vince McMahon and getting suspended for it to taking pictures and posting them on social media of Roman Reigns hanging out with Braun Strowman to now being sued by a camera man from the WWE Network television show “Swerved”. The camera man is claiming that the incident took place back in 2015 and that he was severely injured when Titus kicked a camera out his hand and it caused serious injury to his hand, fingers and wrist. He is seeking $1.2 million from O’Neil.

    - Congratulations for Smackdown General Manager Daniel Bryan and former WWE Star Brie Bella on the birth of their daughter, Birdie Joe Danielson earlier this week. Mother and child are doing excellent.

    - Bryan in an interview conducted earlier this week made it abundantly clear with no hidden agenda that he WILL wrestle again. He noted that it is all dependent on how he feels his health is and how his wife feels his health is but if he feels good, he is going to wrestle in a year and a half when his WWE contract expires. He never used the word “maybe” or “might”. He said he WILL.

    - In an interesting note, DAVE MELTZER pointed out that in an April 2000 edition of his Observer Newsletter, he wrote: “A stand out wrestler is named American Dragon, an 18-year old honor student that dropped out of college to get into pro-wrestling. In his first 3 months of training, he had suffered three concussions.” This was back in 2000. WOW.

    - Congratulations to WWE COO Paul Levesque as he was inducted into the Boys and Girls Club of America’s Alumni Hall of Fame earlier this week.

    - Happy 49th Birthday to NXT Commissioner William Regal!!!

    - Dave Batista, currently starring in the #1 movie in America “Guardians of the Galaxy: Volume 2”, said on Chris Jericho’s podcast that he had pitched an idea to Vince McMahon personally about having a program with Triple H that would lead to Batista’s retirement at Wrestlemania. Vince informed him that it sounded interesting and that he would get back to him on it. This was several months ago and he still has not heard back. Since he has a ton of films on his docket now, he is booked solid for the next 18 months and is NOT getting any younger so it likely isn’t going to happen now.

    - Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is on the cover of this month’s GQ Magazine and in the article/profile he noted that there is a strong possibility that he would run for President of the United States one day in the future.

    - Despite claiming that he was going to wrestle under the name “Formerly Known As Jack Swagger”, Swagger returned to wrestling in South Africa last weekend under the name JOCK Swagger. SMH.

    - Something to keep an eye on is that a judge refused to throw out a court case led by Scott “Raven” Levy and Marcus “Buff” Bagwell concerning royalties over the WWE Network. While U.S. District Court Judge Janet Hall noted that WCW Inc, which was a subsidiary of WWE due to the purchase of the company could NOT be sued by the plaintiffs due to it being folded into WWE, WWE COULD be sued and that WWE’s arguments against why they could were too ambiguous and not persuasive enough against it. Usually Jerry McDevitt and team get cases like these thrown out daily but the fact that it is still going to be ongoing could open some potentially disastrous doors for WWE should the court rule that Raven and Bagwell are entitled to royalties.

WWE BACKLASH PPV is on Saturday, May 20th, 2017 from Chicago, Illinois and the line-up is as follows:

  • NXT TITLE: Bobby Roode © vs. Hideo Itami
  • NXT WOMEN’S TITLE: Asuka © vs. Ruby Riot vs. Nikki Cross
  • NXT TAG TEAM TITLES: The Authors of Pain (Akam & Rezar) © w/Paul Ellering vs. #DIY (Johnny Gargano & Tomasso Ciampa) in a LADDER MATCH
  • WWE UNITED KINGDOM TITLE: Tyler Bate © vs. Pete Dunne
  • WWE BACKLASH PPV is on Sunday, May 21st, 2017 from Chicago, Illinois and the line-up is as follows:

  • WWE TITLE: Randy Orton © vs. Jinder Mahal w/The Singh Brothers
  • WWE U.S. TITLE: Kevin Owens © vs. “The Phenomenal” A.J. Styles
  • WWE TAG TEAM TITLES: The Usos © (Jimmy & Jey)
  • vs/ Breezango (Tyler Breeze & Fandango)
  • Shinsuke Nakamura vs. Dolph Ziggler
  • Charlotte/Becky Lynch/Naomi vs. Natalya/Tamina/Carmella

    - The World of Sport tapings that were “cancelled” despite Jeff Jarrett holding a press conference a few weeks ago announcing the deal now may not take place until 2018. WOW. That is a huge blow for ITV which wanted to get off the ground running by bringing this show back and getting involved in the wrestling business. The public reason being given is that Impact didn’t have the capacity to do the show at the scheduled time due to the dates being close to their Impact tapings in India but the reality is that they could not come to an agreement over the details of the partnership between ITV and Impact. The deal is still salvageable but postponing until 2018 is a HUGE blow.

    - Gail Kim is due back soon. She returned on the “debut” Impact under the new regime but did not wrestle due to injury. She has not been seen since but plans on returning in the near future.

    - I am not 100% sure the logic behind this but Impact has attempted to register the trademarks for “Broken Matt, Brother Nero, Broken Brilliance and Vanguard 1” recently. Considering Matt and his wife Reby filed for trademarks several months ago, this doesn’t reflect strongly on Impact or their case against the Hardy’s. I am also not sure where this leaves negotiations between Impact and WWE that have been ongoing.

    - Catching highlights of Impact week after week has been interesting and refreshing. No I have not been watching the shows from beginning to end but seeing less “stars” and “names” from the past and seeing more fresh faces instead has made the show feel different. They still need much better storylines but it is definitely a step in the right direction.

Ring of Honor / Lucha Underground / Independent / International News and Notes:

    - The Sinclair Media purchase of Tribune Broadcasting was completed earlier this week for $3.9 Billion. This will give Sinclair stations in New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, Houston, Miami and a few other cities. This is noteworthy because it will allow Ring of Honor to air their weekly syndicated show in 9 of the top 10 markets in the United States if they choose to and honestly, I don’t see why they wouldn’t.

    - ROH’s “War of the Worlds” PPV with New Japan is tonight and looks to be an amazing card from top to bottom. I should have went to the show. I regret not going. Anyway, does anyone know why Alex Shelly is NOT on the card? He worked the Toronto War of the Worlds show on Wednesday teaming with Sabin as well as the Dearborn show yesterday but he wasn’t advertised for the PPV and isn’t injured. Weird.

    - Lucha Underground returns to the El Rey Network with the 2nd half of their current season on May 31st.

    - The New Japan Pro Wrestling Dominion PPV show (one of NJPW’s bigger events of the year) is confirmed to be main evented by the rematch between IWGP Champion Kazuchicka Okada vs. Kenny Omega. The show takes place on June 11th from Osaka Japan.

    - It was also confirmed that this year’s “Super Juniors” tournament will be the last for Jushin “Thunder” Liger. He did not announce his retirement but at age 52, he will obviously be wrestling fewer dates as time goes on.

    - They have also booked a Will Ospreay vs. Ricochet rematch from last year’s Super Juniors tournament on day 2 which absolutely means that they NEED to top their match from last year. You know, the one that caused a ton of controversy.

    - Bad news for Katsuyori Shibata as he had to undergo a 2nd brain surgery and is having vision issues with both his right eye as well as hearing in his right ear. For those who believe that he will be back in the ring, keep dreaming. No way does NJPW let him EVER wrestle a match again after this. Such a shame that this is happening all due to a stuff head-butt that should have never been delivered.

    - AXS and New Japan have agreed to terms on how the Long Beach California shows in July will air. It is expected that the 1st show will air LIVE on AXS on July 1st.

    - I’ve been asked a bunch about Cody Rhodes (or just Cody) as he is being called and his work since leaving WWE. While he has improved, his work is NOT high level Indy quality from what I have seen (granted I have not seen a significant amount of his work). Don’t get me wrong, he is solid. But he is NOT in the upper echelon of independent and Japan talent (or even U.K.). With that being said however, he carries like a star and such a main event talent. He has a swagger about him that most independent guys do not have. He likely gets that from his father but also from his WWE pedigree. Remember, Cody started in the WWE system. He didn’t work independents before joining WWE. He is a product of his environment and he knows how to present himself. He is believable as a top guy. I hope he continues working independents and Japan before even considering going back to WWE because he is young and athletic enough to get to that level in the ring. A good example to look at is Drew McIntyre as he has improved to be one of the best workers around today due to his work away from WWE. Cody can be the same.

    - Atsushi Onita is retiring from wrestling. Again. For the 7th time in his career. His “last” match is expected to be on October 31st, just a few days following his 60th birthday. Honestly, he should absolutely try to get Terry Funk to be his opponent. Funk is in fact Onita’s idol and they both have retired almost the same amount of times. It makes the most sense.

    - R.I.P. to AAA’s Gran Apache as he passed away last week at age 58 from intestinal cancer.

    - In an effort to build attendance, Arena Mexico has added a restaurant to the building to attract more fans. Honestly, CMLL has a pretty solid business model since they own the building and run it frequently.

    - WWE Hall of Famer Kevin Von Erich is actually having a match in Tel Aviv in July. Von Erich, age 59, will be teaming with his sons Marshall and Ross against Marty Jannetty, Matt Sydal (Evan Bourne) and an unnamed opponent. Von Erich noted that he and his brothers LOVED Tel Aviv and despite not wrestling since 1995, he always wanted to go back. So when his sons got booked, he wanted to do it with them.

RING OF HONOR’S “WAR OF THE WORLDS” PPV is TONIGHT from New York City and the line-up is as follows:

  • ROH TITLE: Christopher Daniels © vs. Cody vs. Jay Lethal
  • ROH TV TITLE: Marty Scurll © vs. Matt Sydal
  • ROH TAG TEAM TITLES: The Young Bucks (Matt & Nick Jackson) © vs. Tetsuya Naito & Bushi
  • ROH SIX MAN TITLES: The Briscoes (Jay & Mark Briscoe) & Bully Ray © vs. Roppongi Vice (Rocky Romero & Trent Baretta) & Hirooki Goto
  • Hiroshi Tanahashi vs. Adam Cole
  • Will Ospreay vs. Jay White
  • (Hanson & Ray Rowe) vs. Evil & Seiya Sanada vs. Jonathan Gresham & Chris Sabin
  • Frankie Kazarian vs. Hangman Page
  • Kushida vs. Dalton Castle vs. Bobby Fish vs. Silas Young
  • MMA News and Notes:

    - Last week Anderson Silva threatened retirement if he didn’t get an interim middleweight title fight against Yoel Romero. Dana White replied with “He isn’t getting a title fight and when you are a fighter and begin talking about retirement, maybe you probably retire.” Anderson Silva, following White’s comments, cancelled the rest of his training camp meaning he is 100% off the June 3rd show.

    - George St. Pierre has confirmed via his official Twitter that he will not be “ready” to fight Michael Bisping until after October meaning he wants the fight to take place in November. Due to this, UFC President Dana White confirmed that despite the press conference to announce GSP’s return and impending fight against Michael Bisping, the fight is now officially OFF. Bisping’s next opponent will be Yoel Romero and they are likely going to be aiming for the July 8th UFC PPV during International Fight Week. Technically Anderson Silva was right in his assessment because Bisping would have been champion with OVER a year between title defenses had UFC agreed to November(He won the title in June 2016 and defended in October 2016 vs. Dan Henderson). GSP could fight the winner in November with this new timeline. Problem is, Bisping vs. GSP was the biggest fight UFC could offer in 2017 unless Conor McGregor fights again. Bisping vs. Romero is not a money drawing fight. Romero vs. GSP is NOT a money drawing fight. Sure GSP’s return will garner interest but the bigger fight would have been vs. Bisping. In all honesty, neither man is beating Romero. So you are going to lose your biggest drawing fight because Romero is going to play spoiler and then you are going to lose luster on GSP because Romero is going to beat him as well, at least in my opinion.

    - I do feel that if Romero wins, GSP is going to shift into wanting Conor McGregor (which will be the biggest UFC fight of all time) or someone else like Nick or Nate Diaz or Anderson Silva. He may possibly chase after his Welterweight Title that he never lost against Tyrone Woodley or Stephen Thompson and that would in fact draw but not at the level of the other fights I just mentioned.

    - Dana White also confirmed that he is still negotiating to make Floyd Mayweather vs. Conor McGregor happen but it has been a nightmare so far trying to seal the deal and eventually he is going to reach a point where he will walk away from the table and the fight won’t happen. He isn’t there yet but it is a possibility.

    - White also noted that last Saturday following boxing’s Canelo Alvarez defeated Julio Caesar Chavez Jr. that he will be fighting “Triple G” Gennady Golovkin on September 16th. That was the date that Dana White and Floyd Mayweather were targeting for the Mayweather vs. McGregor fight.

    - Speaking of McGregor, congrats to Conor and his girlfriend model Dee Devlin on the birth of their first child, Conor Jack McGregor over the weekend.

    - UFC did confirm that UFC 214 will be headlined by Daniel Cormier defending the UFC Light Heavyweight Title against the returning Jon Jones.

    - Anderson Silva is not the only one up in arms over it as Luke Rockhold said he plans on sitting out until he has a direct path laid out in front of him for the title. He also advised all of the other middleweight contenders to do the same. It is unfair to them that they have to sit or risk their place in line taking a meaningless fight rather than being in the mix for the title. Rockhold noted the only way he would fight is if UFC made Michael Bisping fight one of the top contenders before his fight with GSP in November or create an interim title Gegard Mousasi, Yoel Romero or Robert Whitaker.

    - UFC has signed a deal with Fox Networks Group Latin America. The deal will begin with tomorrow’s UFC 211 PPV and it will air in several Latin American countries except Brazil and Mexico which UFC already has television deals with on other networks.

    - In addition to UFC Hall of Famer Matt Hughes making it public that he is willing to fight again at age 43 and wanting it to be in UFC but is willing to fight elsewhere if necessary, it looks like 47 year old UFC Hall of Famer Chuck Liddell is also willing to fight again. Bellator is absolutely listening and is not above main eventing guys well into their 40’s on shows.

UFC 211 is on TOMORROW NIGHT from Dallas Texas and the line-up is as follows:

  • UFC HEAVYWEIGHT TITLE: Stipe Miocic © vs. Junior Dos Santos
  • UFC WOMEN’S STRAWWEIGHT TITLE: Joanna Jedrzejczyk © vs. Jessica Andrade
  • Eddie Alvarez vs. Dustin Poirier
  • Frankie Edgar vs. Yair Rodriquez
  • Ben Rothwell vs. Fabricio Werdum
  • Henry Cejudo vs. Sergio Pettis
  • Demian Maia vs. Jorge Masvidal
  • UFC 212 is on Saturday, June 3rd, 2017 from Rio De Janeiro Brazil and the line-up is as follows:

  • UNDISPUTED UFC FEATHERWEIGHT TITLE: Jose Aldo © vs. Max Holloway ©
  • Karolina Kowalkiewicz vs. Claudia Gadelha
  • Vitor Belfort vs. Nate Marquardt
  • UFC 213 is on Saturday, July 8th, 2017 from Las Vegas Nevada and the line-up is as follows:

  • UFC WELTERWEIGHT TITLE: Cody Garbrandt © vs. T.J. Dillashaw
  • Robbie Lawler vs. Donald Cerrone
  • Fabricio Werdum vs. Alistair Overeem
  • Anthony Pettis vs. Jim Miller
  • UFC 214 is on Saturday, July 29th, 2017 from Anaheim California and the line-up is as follows:

  • UFC LIGHT HEAVYWEIGHT TITLE: Daniel Cormier © vs. Jon Jones

    - Guardians of the Galaxy: Volume 2 was FANTASTIC. Such a fun movie. Marvel could continue making these till the end of time and I would be perfectly content. PS – Amazing that Dave Batista, Michael Rooker and Baby Groot steal this movie from main star Chris Pratt. Actually Bradley Cooper as Rocket was no slouch himself. Exceptional cast and Kurt Russell is EASILY (SPOILER ALERT.......skip to the next section if you have not yet seen the movie and do not want to be spoiled by what I am about to write. Just go to the next bullet point. You’ve been warned. Last chance. Ok) a top tier Marvel villain 2nd only to Thanos and maybe Loki.

    - A $431 million worldwide opening weekend isn’t too shabby either. They have since passed $500 million worldwide and should hit a billion by the end of summer.

    - Wow. Great STORY.

    - How come no one put me onto “Designated Survivor” earlier? I am about 7 episodes in and it is a damn good show. A gazillion times better than Quantico which I binged watched last season and it was car crash can’t look away type of television but I tried the first 2 episodes of this season and quit. That show fell off terribly and it wasn’t that good to begin with. But Designated Survivor is fantastic. Shame on you all for not pushing this on me from the beginning.

    - And just like that, Scandal is DONE. Next season is expected to be the last for the hit ABC show. It will be officially announced next week at the ABC up front presentations.

    - Pretty ho-hum episode of the Flash this week. With two episodes remaining, I am assuming this was the calm before the storm since most of the episode was played for laughs.

    - Arrow is closing out the season strong. Finally a solid villain in Prometheus and a lot of loops closed. They salvaged the show following last season’s Damien Darhk flub.

    - I am about 3 episodes behind on Supergirl. While I do indeed like the show, for some reason I do not feel compelled to HAVE to watch it each week. I am more of a “I’ll get to it eventually” guy with this show.

    - ABC has confirmed that they are going to revive American Idol and that the newly hired Ryan Seacrest will host.

    - Next week is the network “upfronts” where we find out what is cancelled, what is renewed and some new shows/reboots are coming for next season. We already have a pretty good idea of what is coming back or not; but yesterday we get a definitive answer on Marvels: Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., IT HAS BEEN RENEWED!!!! That is great news as it has been phenomenal this year and deserves to come back. This week’s episode was fantastic and honestly, Iain De Caestecker a.k.a. Fitz deserves an award for his work this season as he has been incredible. The main reason that Shield was not cancelled is because it currently ranks 4th of ALL currently broadcast network shows in DVR Playback with a 129% boost in viewership that way. So while the ratings are down 30% from last season and all of the shows that have the same viewership on ABC (Quantico, The Catch, Conviction) which were all cancelled, Shield survived due to DVR watching.

    - Hellboy is getting a rated-R reboot and it will NOT star Ron Pearlman. That kind of sucks since Pearlman was great but I think a new actor will be good in a reboot. Plus options for sequels.

    - FXX has confirmed that they have ordered a 10 episode animated series for “Deadpool” by actor/director Donald Glover. WOW. No word on if Ryan Reynolds will voice the role but I can totally see him doing so.

    - Fox’s “Gotham” was renewed for a 4th season. I still refuse to watch this drek. I get it, it is good and has cool storylines but a show about Batman that doesn’t have Batman is not something I am interested in. Plus, as I noted before the show even aired, you can’t have a show about Batman villains since we all know that NONE OF THEM ARE DYING OR GOING TO JAIL. Batman is the one who catches them and locks them up. I couldn’t care less about Detective Gordon. He’s not a main guy. Madness.

    - PS – Krypton got a full season order from the SyFy Network. Honestly, why should I give a f*ck about a Superman show WITHOUT Superman. What is wrong with DC greenlighting superhero shows without the superheroes?!?!?!?!? I cannot believe that there are people who support this concept.

    - In not promising news for Guy Ritchie or Charlie Hunnam fans, “King Arthur: The Legend of the Sword” has been crushed by critics with not one positive review and is tracking to be a major BOMB at the box office this weekend.
