T.G.I.F. with Matt Dawgs: #445

Good day to you all and welcome to We Want Insanity. I am your host for today, Matt Dawgs and this is my column. Today is the end of the work week and the time to look back at all the goings-on over the past seven days as I wrap it up with a bow and spout it out bit by bit. Buckle up. Enjoy the ride.

IMPORTANT MATT NOTE:: I am hoping that you readers have taken the time to lend a hand and donated to the JAIDAN STRONG cause for me. I’d really appreciate it if you did; as little as $5 can go a long way. If not, it isn’t a big deal but please at least SHARE THE LINK. I get that finances can be tough for some but taking the time to share a link via your social media doesn’t cost a dime. I’d appreciate it greatly as one of your friends or family members may be able to help out. Thanks.

BONUS MATT NOTE: R.I.P. to “Lois Lane” as actress Margot Kidder passed away earlier this week at age 69.

P.S. – F*ck Yanny. F*ck Laurel. F*ck the white and gold dress. F*ck the blue and black dress. So stupid.

MATT MATTERS NOTE: James Guttman is the Dad of Hi Blog! I'm Dad. and also just had an article posted on Love What Matters. Check it out.

WWE NEWS AND NOTES:

- The big story of the week is that according to the Hollywood Reporter, NBC Universal is close to finalizing a deal to retain RAW for the USA Network however NOT renewing Smackdown therefore allowing WWE to shop the show to another rival network and increase their rights fees even further. This is HUGE news for WWE because WWE was hoping to triple their rights fees for BOTH shows. Now they are doubling them for just RAW and if they land on another network for Smackdown at a fraction of what they are getting for Raw, it is still a win/win for them.

- Currently NBCU pays WWE $160 million annually for RAW and Smackdown. NBCU is close to agreeing to 3 times their current value for just RAW which can be estimated to about $350 - $400 million. So if they can shop Smackdown around for just $100 million thus putting them around $500 million for their TV rights in the United States. HOLY MOTHERF*CKING SH*T!!! That is an amazing number and means WWE will be making money and remain profitable for decades to come regardless of the product they put out. It would take some super-duper major bonehead decision making to fail at this point in time. I mean they would need to do a gazillion times worse than WCW in their dying days on top of undergoing a bigger scandal than “He Who Shall Not Be Named”. Even then, they still might not flop. So to everyone that is holding their breath thinking WWE is going to make any changes that appeases fans, keep holding your breath.

- As of this writing, the leading candidates to land Smackdown are Fox to either air on Fox or Fox Sports 1, Facebook and Amazon. So it will all boil down to who is willing to pay WWE for the rights.

- The only downside to the RAW deal is that at the price that NBCU is going to pay them means that there is zero chance that RAW moves back to 2 hours. That was a hope by many, fans and employees of WWE alike if they moved to FOX or another network.

- The rumors of the new TV rights deal pushed WWE stock to a record high of $50 per share pushing WWE’s value to $4 Billion, the most the company has EVER been worth.

- WWE forging full steam ahead on the Ronda Rousey front as Nia Jax issued a friendly challenge to Rousey at the NBC upfront in NYC on Monday and Rousey accepted setting up the match for the Money in the Bank PPV on June 17th. RAW was centered on this angle airing multiple times throughout the show. Just for the record, this angle was f*cking terrible. Both Jax and Rousey were extra wooden when talking. The challenge was extremely lame and awkward. They are also painted in a corner because it is WAY TOO SOON for Rousey to win the title and for Jax to lose it since Jax was built for a year to win the title at Mania only to lose it two months later? Rousey abso-f*cking-loutley shouldn’t be losing this soon into her run. The only things I can think of are that Nattie will interfere and turn on Ronda costing her the match or Stephanie McMahon is going to interfere with Jax turning heel but that is also way too soon since they have been building Jax as a babyface who overcomes bullying and what not.

- It will be a true test for Ronda because unless they go the Mania route and have her and Nia practice the match move for move, Nia isn’t capable of carrying someone. She can in fact be carried and have a solid match but leading someone with less experience than she has will be a daunting challenge. I figured her match with Nattie would be the first following mania because Nattie is more than capable of carrying someone. The assumption will be that they will face off at Summerslam in Brooklyn in August.

- Speaking of Ronda, she posted a picture at the upfront presentation of her, Nia Jax, Charlotte, Stephanie McMahon and Triple H. Now I get that she is a star and you want to showcase her because honestly, she makes the most sense and is the company’s biggest female star but why would they take a picture with Stephanie McMahon standing directly next to her and then she posts it on her social media page. Kayfabe. Just a little bit. From a storyline perspective it would make sense if she and Stephanie were standing on opposite ends of the picture. That way you can frame it that they both had to be there to promote WWE but wanted to be kept apart. Instead, having them stand side by side with their arm’s wrapped around each other while smiling looks incredibly dumb.

- WWE also announced that Ronda will make her U.K. “in-ring” debut this August for their live event on August 29th in London at the O2 arena.

- Rousey made her live event debut Wednesday in Geneva Switzerland teaming with Ember Moon and Natalya against Mickie James, Ruby Riott and Live Morgan in a six person tag. Rousey picked up the win by tapping out James to the armbar. Originally it was scheduled to be a 1x1 with James but was changed at the last minute. She wrestled in Vienna last night, Turin and Paris tomorrow.

- In news that most certainly cannot be pleasant for Vince McMahon to hear, Rousey told TMZ that she and her husband, UFC fighter Travis Browne are looking to become parents soon. Considering she signed a multi-year contract and is being painted as the face of the women’s division and is easily the company’s biggest star not named Dwayne Johnson or John Cena, this has to be thoroughly disappointing to hear. WWE is investing a ton in Rousey for her to plan on taking a year to two years off once she becomes pregnant is going to be a HUGE blow because Vince is not as forgiving as Dana White is when it comes to his stars.

- With WWE touring Europe in their annual post Mania European tour which happens to be their most successful house show loop annually, RAW and Smackdown both originated in the O2 Arena in London.

- RAW was the Kevin Owens show as it featured two very good Owens matches. Owens challenged for the I.C. title against Seth Rollins and in the main event he qualified for the Money in the Bank match after Kurt Angle was forced to let him try to get in again due to Stephanie McMahon’s orders. I think it is fairly obvious that Owens is the lead choice to win the briefcase because him teasing cashing in for the next several months would be a big deal.

- Roman Reigns opened RAW and was booed out of the building. Michael Cole, on commentary noted that he was being booed because they are in London which is a different type of crowd. Why in the world is he booed everywhere else Cole? Why?

- I hate that they are really going ahead with trying to portray Reigns as a man being screwed by WWE Management. It is so silly.

- Sami Zayn is bringing Bobby Lashley’s sisters to RAW. I am going to warn you well in advance that this has the potential with the current WWE writing staff to be the worst segment in RAW history. I have absolutely ZERO CONFIDENCE in this being successful. ZERO.

- The “B” Team. That is pretty funny, I must admit. Their win on Monday marks both Dallas and Axel’s FIRST win of 2018 for either man. That is including WWE Live Events.

- Do you remember when Bobby Roode was a STAR over on Impact and came to WWE with so much fanfare and a cool entrance theme? Remember when he was in NXT and featured as a star of the promotion? LOLZ.

- No Way Jose is DEAD in the water. D-E-A-D.

- They had an incredible angle waiting for them with Bayley and Sasha Banks and they completely dropped the ball on it. No one gives a sh*t and the fact that one of them still hasn’t turned on the other legitimately is MIND BLOWING.

- I am not digging McIntyre with Ziggler. McIntyre should be getting a huge solo push. Ziggler is only bringing him down. The only way this team would work is if Ziggler was being treated like a star and McIntire was Diesel to his Shawn. Yes, I know Ziggler pinned Balor on RAW but it still didn’t seem like a big deal. Ziggler has just been beaten down way too many times for anyone to remotely take anything he does seriously. That is the problem with start/stop pushes and 50/50 booking. Do you not remember the reaction he got AS A HEEL when he cashed in his MITB briefcase? Or when he won the Survivor Series main event on Shawn Michaels team’s behalf against all odds and was the sole survivor? WWE had something with him and sh*tted it away.

- The Revival. Remember when they were a star team and NXT? LOLZ.

- Boy did Roman Reigns spearing Jinder Mahal through a wall look terrible. Didn’t WWE have a top notch prop guy? What happened here?

- Elias is over. PUSH HIM.

- Why was London booing Lashley? Was it because of the sit down interview last week? He hasn’t really done anything to get booed. His work is fine. His character is fine. It has to be that crappy interview.

- Daniel Bryan destroying Big Cass to open Smackdown was a direct result of Cass’ actions involving the midget from two weeks ago. WWE was in fact punishing Cass for that.

- This tour caused Bryan to miss both Brie’s first mother’s day as well as Birdie’s first birthday. While I am sure he is happy to be back wrestling again since it is his dream and passion, he certainly couldn’t have been happy about this.

- Andrade “Cien” Almas has STAR written all over him with Zelina Vega as his manager. That being said, WWE LOVES to ruin all good things so I do not have high hopes that he will be treated as such.

- Amazingly enough, it wasn’t more than two years ago when he was considering leaving and going back to Mexico because he wasn’t adapting to the WWE style quick enough and he had asked Alberto El Patron for advice and was told that if he wasn’t feeling it, he should leave. He was talked out of leaving by Triple H and look at him now.

- I am with Lana being paired back with Rusev AND Aiden English. I hope they go that route.

- I cannot be the only person who noticed that Lana is losing her Russian accent on TV. Mind you, she doesn’t have it on Total Divas but she tried to maintain it on WWE TV although it is now almost gone. That’s what happens when you are out of practice.

- Carmella defending against Asuka at MITB. The more they book the women on Smackdown, the more confused I get by the Mania match which had Charlotte end Asuka’s undefeated streak. SMH.

- Why don’t they give Samoa Joe the f*cking ball already and be done with it? He is the best wrestler promo on the roster right now.

- So we are clear: A.J. Styles beat Shinsuke Nakamura at Mania CLEAN and Nakamura turned heel by kicking A.J. in the balls. Their subsequent matches on PPV and Smackdown ended in “no-contests/DQ’s/Countouts”. So it is announced that they are coming back at MITB in a title match with a stipulation. It is then announced that before that PPV match, they are going to have a match on Smackdown where the winner gets to determine the stipulation in a non-title bout. Nakamura then wins CLEANLY with no controversy to get the right to name a stipulation for a match to determine a clean outcome? So essentially they needed a match with a stip because no one was winning clean and to determine that, they had one of the men WIN CLEAN so that they can have a match that has a clean win? WHAT. THE. F*CK?

- They have killed the Styles/Nakamura feud. They had a layup on their laps and they blew it. Overbooking it as crap instead of just letting them put on high quality matches. Awful. They delivered in their Smackdown main event this week but no one gives a flying f*ck about it. The crowd sits on their hands with them.

- The talk of adding a MITB tag team match has been dropped. They are going to stick to the men’s and women’s MITB matches only.

- When it rains, it pours for Charlotte apparently. Following the news last week that she has been wrestling with a ruptured breast implant that will require surgery, at the start of the European Tour last week, she had two teeth knocked out during a match with Carmella. She was flown back to the U.S. to have them replaced a day early but she was scheduled to fly back anyway to attend the Needham Conference as well as the NBC Universal Upfront Presentations in New York. She is expected to fly back to complete the tour.

- WWE announced the first 8 competitors participating in the 16-man U.K. Championship tournament. The tournament will take place at the annual “Download Festival” between June 8th and 10th with the finals taking place on June 18th. The winner of the tournament then goes on to challenge for Pete Dunne’s U.K. Title on June 19th at Royal Albert Hall. The competitors are:

  • Zack Gibson
  • Joe Coffey
  • Jack Gallagher
  • Dave Mastiff
  • Kenny Williams
  • El Ligero
  • Joseph conners
  • Amir Jordan
  • Travis Banks
  • Flash Morgan Webster
  • Jordan Devlin
  • Tucker
  • Drew Gulak
  • Ashton Smith
  • James Drake
  • Tyson T-Bone
  • - With ITV doing a television taping last week in the U.K. and WWE trying to sign and lock up as much European talent as they can, it has been confirmed that Revolution Pro is no longer being allowed to use WWE U.K. talents anymore. Only Progress and ICW are allowed to book them since they have deals with WWE.

    - I am begging to believe that this is all a complete work. John Cena appeared on the Today Show and painted himself like a victim in the breakup with Nikki Bella and that he was blindsided by it. He said he wants to marry her and start a family with her. It all seems like storyline now which means either they never split or they did split but have since reconciled and are working everyone. Nikki was approached at the NBC upfronts and was “floored” by Cena’s comments and then Wednesday on the Today Show while promoting Total Bellas with sister Brie she noted that she hopes they can get back together. 100% work.

    - In the annual “shake the program up” note, WWE Smackdown Women’s Champion Carmella noted that she will NOT be a cast member of next season’s Total Divas. This is not seen as a punishment or anything. They change up the cast each season with the exception of the Bella Twins who are on yearly.

    - Congrats to Flash Morgan Webster and Kenny Williams as they both made their 205 Live debut this week in the U.K.

    - WWE has also signed U.S. gymnast Stacey Ervin Jr. to a developmental deal. He is 24 years old and is the boyfriend of Olympic Gold Medalist Simone Biles. While it is going to take him some time to get the technical aspect of wrestling as well as the psychology, he was signed because apparently he is incredible at flipping and was said to have been able to do things that current NXT star Ricochet can’t even do.

    - WWE has also signed former Rugby League star Daniel Vidot. Vidot is Samoan and played Rugby professionally in Australia from 2009 through 2017. He was offered a deal back in 2016 after a tryout but turned them down. He has since moved to Florida and has reported to the Performance Center.

    - Last week I noted that NXT’s Tino Sabbatelli would be out of action for 8 – 12 months due to an injury and how unfortunate it was since they were doing an angle with he and partner Riddick Moss breaking up and feuding. Well it isn’t all for naught now because unfortunately Moss tore his Achilles tendon last week and is ALSO out of action for the next 8 – 12 months. Both men will be returning roughly around the same time.

    - The Revival are apparently not on the European tour with RAW or Smackdown (I note both because even though Samoa Joe is on Smackdown now, he is working the RAW leg of the European tour) and showed up at the NXT Live Event in Oklahoma last night as a surprise against The Undisputed Era.

    - Shane McMahon underwent successful hernia repair surgery last week in New York and is recovering at home.

    - Current New Japan star and former WWE star Harry “Davey Boy Smith Jr.” was backstage at RAW this week visiting.

    - Former WWE Star Austin Aries sent congratulations to his FORMER girlfriend Zelina Vega on her Smackdown debut. Note the “FORMER”. I had no idea they had split up. I HAVE A CHANCE!!!!

    - It was revealed on this week’s “Table for 3” with Jeff Jarrett, Elias and Road Dog that A.J. Styles theme music was originally created for James Storm however he left the company so they used it for A.J.

    - Showtime is doing a documentary on of MAURO RANALLO and how he juggles his career with his mental health battles.

    - I mentioned last week that Kane won the mayoral race for Knox Tennessee and sent my congratulations. I apologize for the error as Kane only won the Republican primary and the vote for Mayor isn’t until the fall.

    - CM Punk’s civil trial by Dr. Joseph Amann is set to begin on Monday in Chicago as that was when the trial date was set. My assumption is that Punk’s attorney is going to ask for a delay due to Punk currently being in camp for his June fight. A judge will probably grant him one and thus the trial will be postponed until the late summer or early fall. Amann’s attorney did in fact try to reach a settlement with Punk but none was reached.

    - Former WWE Star Enzo Amore’s attorney released a statement noting that there was not enough evidence to further the allegations made against him and no charges will be pressed meaning that the case is closed. While he is free to return to WWE at this time, I don’t think that they would consider bringing him back anytime soon mainly because of how it all went down. Had he informed them when he found out about the allegations, he absolutely would have been brought back and may not even have been fired, but because Stephanie McMahon was blind-sided by a reporter’s question on the subject while doing promotions for WWE RAW 25 in New York, that is why he was terminated. His attorney’s statement is as follows:

On January 22, 2018, Eric Arndt (also known as Enzo Amore for World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE)) was accused, via the internet and social media, of misconduct during an alleged incident in Phoenix, Arizona several months earlier. Prior to that date, no law enforcement or any other officials had contacted Mr. Arndt regarding such claims. However, after the careless, unfounded tirade on social media, Mr. Arndt learned of these accusations when his counsel reached out to Phoenix Police. Subsequently, and as evidenced by the vast amount of online admissions and other publicly available information, it was soon clear that the accuser exhibited a complete lack of truth or credibility. At all times, Mr. Arndt fully and unequivocally denied such accusations and remained confident in clearing his name.

The Phoenix Police Department recently informed Mr. Arndt and his counsel that there is insufficient evidence in this matter to warrant any criminal charges, that the matter will not be transferred to the County Attorney for prosecution, and that their investigation and case is closed. No charges were ever filed. The matter is closed.

Mr. Arndt expresses his gratitude for the enormous amount of support from his fans and followers during this time period. The support has carried him through these events and opened his eyes to the faith and loyalty of those who have cheered and followed his career. This experience has further taught Mr. Arndt to be cautious with his personal associations, because false, defamatory, and unfounded accusations can alter and impact the lives and careers of the falsely accused and their families. Mr. Arndt is working diligently toward his next venture in the entertainment industry and looks forward to reconnecting with his fans in a big way in the very near future.

    - To the surprise of no one, 2K Sports revealed that WWE 2K19 will be released this fall. They release the game every fall and this year did big numbers so this was expected.

    - The new season of Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s “Ballers” will debut on June 12th on HBO.

NXT TAKEOVER CHICAGO is on Saturday, June 16th, 2018 from Chicago Illinois and the line-up is as follows:

  • Ring of Honor / New Japan / Lucha Underground / Independent / International News and Notes:

    - It looks like we have about 10,000 plus people who are “ALL IN” as tickets for the Cody & Young Bucks promoted “All In” show on September 1st went on sale on Sunday May 13th and SOLD OUT in approximately 30 minutes. Say what you want about Cody (and if you are one of the haters on him then shame on you because in the two years he has been gone from WWE he has done nothing but improve and solidify himself as a star) but this is an incredibly impressive feat. 10,000 for an independent show with NO MATCHES ANNOUNCED ahead of time is incredible. The only confirmed match is Cody challenging for the NWA title which is currently held by Nick “Magnus” Aldis but he may not be champion by September 1st. Bravo to Cody and the Bucks for consistently thinking outside the box and making wrestling something special outside of the WWE.

    - At the press conference before tickets went on sale, it was announced that Rey Mysterio is “All In”.

    - Surprisingly enough, on August 31st the day before “All In”; the Pro Wrestling Tees store in Chicago Illinois will be hosting a special autograph signing with CM Punk. It will be his 1st wrestling related appearance since departing WWE. That my friend; is 100% NOT a coincidence that he is signing at the Pro Wrestling Tees store the day before “All In”. Just saying. Where there is smoke, there is fire.

    - To coincide with “All In” in Chicago, Podcast host Conrad Thompson is hosting a “Starrcast” convention which will feature a ton of podcast hosts and guests. One of the names advertised was Vince Russo but he has since been removed at the request of Cody who noted via social media that “We don’t reward bad behavior. Stay away from our event.” which was directed at Russo.

    - Latest Episode of BEING THE ELITE which includes Cody and The Bucks reaction to finding out that “All In” sold out in 30 minutes. Again, I cannot reiterate enough how much props I have for them accomplishing this. So amazing for both them and independent wrestling.

    - Paul Heyman on “All In”: “What @CodyRhodes and #TheYoungBucks @MattJackson13 / @NickJacksonYB have accomplished is truly epic. They have built a brand, self-marketed yourselves, negotiated your destinies on multiple continents AND sold over 10,000 tickets to your own event ... on your own terms. It goes without saying that #Dusty would be so very very proud of @CodyRhodes and @MattJackson13 and @NickJacksonYB, and I hope everyone involved is proud of themselves, because this particulatr accomplishment cannot and should not be understated. So I offer my heartfelt congratulations to @CodyRhodes, @MattJackson13 and @NickJacksonYB who have PROVEN themselves to be artists who backed their own vision and emerged as pioneers in the genre of entertainment to which they have dedicated their lives!"

    - As a reminder, the last NON-WWE wrestling show to get 10,000 people in the United Staes was WCW’s “Bash at the Beach” which drew 11,397 paid back on July 11th, 1999. Prior to that was AAA’s “When World’s Collide” show in Los Angeles that drew 12,000 paid back on November 6th, 1994 and saw Eddie Guerrero & Art Bar lose their hair in a double hair vs. mask tag match vs. El Hijo De Santo and Octagon in one of the best tag team matches in professional wrestling HISTORY. Honestly, if you haven’t seen this match, you NEED to. The in-ring work and heat for the match is 2nd to none. So essentially, 10,000 paid fans is an incredible feat to accomplish with the only advertising being the internet/word of mouth.

    - As part of the build for “All In”, Nick “Magnus” Aldis will be making his Ring of Honor debut in Edinburgh at the “Honor United” show teaming with a partner of ROH’s choosing against the Young Bucks.

    - The Kingdom of Matt Taven, T.K. O’Ryan and Vinny Marseglia captured the ROH Six Man titled defeating So-Cal Uncensored of Christopher Daniels, Frankie Kazarian and Scorpio Sky last week.

    - The main event of the next ROH PPV titled “Best in the World” will be Dalton Castle defending the ROH Title in a three way against Cody and Marty Scurll. With Castle working through a serious back injury, it may be the time to take the title off of him and put it back on Cody. Not for nothing, while I haven’t followed the promotion as closely this year as I have in recent years, Castle doesn’t seem like “The guy” to me. Sure his gimmick is GOLD and he is talented but he doesn’t fit the mold of past ROH champions (minus Adam Pierce and Xavier).

    - In HUGE news for New Japan, they announced that Harold Meij was named the first foreign president of the promotion in history. He is from the Netherlands and went to school at Bucknell University as well as in New York City. In addition to Dutch, he is fluent in both English and Japanese and comes from Coca Cola where he was Senior Vice President of Coca Cola Japan. Meij noted that one of his goals as president is to sell out the Tokyo Dome.

    - New Japan’s Dominion show; which is their version of SummerSlam, has SOLD OUT which is approximately 11,800 people. The main event is a 2 out of 3 falls bout with Kazuchika Okada defending the IWGP Title against Kenny Omega and the co-main is Tetsuya Naito defending the Intercontinental Title against Chris Jericho.

    - The New Japan Cow Palace show in San Francisco is still not sold out. That is likely due to no matches being announced yet. The reason they haven’t announced anything is because the Dominion show hasn’t taken place yet.

    - Chris Jericho’s “Lista Ingobernables de Jericho” has become the best-selling shirt at Hot Topic the week after it debuted during his attack on Naito.

    - Wrestlecon has announced that the annual Mania Weekend convention will take place at the Hilton in NYC.

    - With Konnan once again taking over the book for AAA, the main event of the June 3rd show will feature Dr. Wagner Jr. defending the Mega Heavyweight Title against Rey Mysterio Jr. That is a HUGE main event for AAA.

    - Savio Vega’s WWL ran their first show in Puerto Rico since last year’s hurricane destroyed the island.

    - Best wishes to “Human Tornado” as he announced that he is retiring from wrestling. He is 35 years old and has been in the business 18 years.

    - Please keep former WWE/ECW star Justin Credible and his wife in your thoughts and prayers. His wife found out that she has terminal cancer and has been given a diagnosis of only 6 months to live. Credible and her have been together for 25 years and being that he has been battling addiction issues recently, this is incredibly tough for him to be dealing with at this time and absolutely could send him spiraling out of control.

TNA/GLOBAL FORCE IMPACT WRESTLING NEWS and NOTES:

    - Rich Swann has signed with Impact and will debut at the next set of tapings on June 1st in Canada.

    - It appears that Impact is planning on making Sami Callihan vs. Eddie Edwards to be the focal point of the program for the immediate future. They want to go down the route where the exhaust all sorts of gimmick matches and stipulations they can with both of them and keep them as lifetime rivals similar to the Raven vs. Tommy Dreamer feud that carried ECW for several years.

    - To the surprise of no one, there absolutely IS interest in Enzo Amore being signed here despite what Don Callis or anyone else says. Sadly they cannot call him Enzo Amore due to WWE owning that name but he is creative enough to come up with a new name and new shtick. Of course, Enzo coming here would all but close any doors for him to return to WWE anytime soon.

    MMA News and Notes:

    - Despite UFC going on about George St. Pierre vs. Nate Diaz being discussed, Diaz noted that UFC is selling “Wolf Tickets” and there are no plans for him fighting GSP nor does he have interest. Amazing to me that Diaz has been claiming that he wants a HUGE payday and has been eyeing McGregor again but when UFC offered GSP which will be a HUGE payday, he declines.

    - UFC announced that the fight going into this year’s UFC Hall of Fame will be the Dan Henderson vs. Mauricio “Shogun” Rua fight from November 11th, 2011. If you have niot seen that fight, it may be one of the best fights in UFC history. Go track it down and watch. Amazing.

    - It looks like Khabib Nurmagomedov fighting in Russia is not going to take place anytime soon as UFC announced that they are going to debut in Moscow on September 15th but it will be a “Fight Night” show and not a PPV. I assume he will be there in the audience but he isn’t fighting on a Fight Night.

    - Yair Rodriquez has been released after refusing to fight against Zabit Magomedsharipov. Dana White had told the Los Angeles Times that the fight was taking place on August 4th in Los Angeles. Rodriquez tweeted that it was “Fake News” to which Dana White then told the LA Times that Rodriquez had been released from his contract and tweeted out “Real News” following the release. LOL. Savage.

    - Bellator is talking to Rodriquez about signing him to a deal.

    - An Eddie Alvarez vs. Dustin Poirier fight has been signed for July 28th in Canada. They had a potential match of the year in May that ended with a “no contest” due to Alvarez nailing Poirier with an illegal knee to the head when he was down. The referee didn’t note that it was illegal however as the fight should have been a Poirier win due to Alvarez being DQ’d.

    - The whole point of weight classes in MMA is so that people make weight. For the 3rd time in her 6 UFC fights, Mackenzie Dern missed weight heading into her fight with Amanda Cooper last weekend. She absolutely needs to be forced to move up a weight class to 125 because it is obvious she cannot make 115 lbs.

    - Last week UFC held what is probably going to be one of the lowest watched/purchased shows of the year with a PPV that took place in Brazil and headlined by Amanda Nunes defending her Women’s Bantamweight Title against Raquel Pennington as well as Lyoto Machida taking on Vitor Belfort in what is supposed to be Vitor’s “retirement” fight. Well Nunes successfully defended her title by winning in the 5th round via referee stoppage although the fight should have ended sooner as Pennington did not want to come out for the 5th round and told her corner she was done and had nothing left to give. Her corner however talked her out of it. Look, I don’t care if it is a championship fight and there is a “puncher’s chance” at winning. She said she was done and her wishes should have been respected. Mind you, I am not for quitting and agree she shouldn’t have said it. But the fact that she did should have meant something. She shouldn’t have been allowed back out if she didn’t want to go. The 5th round even showed that because you could tell 100% that she wasn’t there and did nothing of note.

    - As for the Machida/Belfort fight, well Machida retired yet another fighter with a front kick to the face. He did so to Randy Couture with the same exact move back in 2011.

    - It doesn’t make sense to me how Nunes isn’t a star. She is extra talented in the octagon with many tools and is only improving including her stamina as in her early fights she was struggling as the fights went on and now she is making 5 rounds with ease. She also defeated both Miesha Tate and Ronda Rousey, two of the biggest women stars in MMA in impressive fashion. The problem is, she is not becoming a draw. I don’t know if it is entirely her fault for not holding up her end of being a star but UFC certainly isn’t helping because they are not pushing her like the star she should be.

    - UFC FUN FACT: Nunes vs. Pennington was the first main event in UFC history where both fighters have come out as being gay.

    - Kelvin Gastelum beat Ronaldo Jacare Souza to continue his Middleweight Title quest. I honestly think that with the roll he has been on, he needs to be considered for a title shot sooner rather than later.

    - During the week in Rio for the fight, 10 people either employed or associated with UFC in some capacity were robbed at gunpoint across the street from the UFC hotel. No one was injured but phones, passports, jewelry and money were taken from all 10.

    - Despite his contract expiring, Jon Dodson has resigned with UFC in a new 4-fight deal.

    - While I definitely had Ryan Bader beating Mohammed “King Mo” Lawal in the Bellator Heavyweight Grand Prix, I absolutely DID NOT have him winning in the fashion that he did. Bader knocked out King Mo in 15 seconds of the first round. WOW. Following the loss, Mo noted that he was moving back down to Middleweight as Heavyweight was too big for him.

    - Bader will face Matt Mitrione next, likely in September and Fedor Emelianenko vs. Chael Sonnen is the other Heavyweight Grand Prix semi-final also likely happening in September. The winner of Bader vs. Mitrione is likely the favored to win the whole thing.

    - Aaron Pico continues to impress on his road to stardom. Despite losing his first MMA fight as a pro, he has shown that he can stand and punch as well as wrestle. He does need several more fights before facing sturdy competition.

    - For f*cks sake, Chuck Liddell revealed that he is coming out of retirement at age 48 having last fought in 2010 in a brutal knockout loss to Rich Franklin to fight for Oscar De La Hoya’s new MMA promotion. Oscar is setting up a fight vs. Tito Ortiz but Liddell says it isn’t a “one off” and he wants to fight again full time eventually coming back to UFC against Jon Jones. I tell you for certain that ISN’T going to EVER happen.

    - Tito Ortiz did confirm that he is coming out of retirement and will fight Liddell. No deals have been signed by either men but he wants it to happen and has wanted it for years.

    - Jones did reply to Liddell’s pipe dream noting: “Old Chuck has been calling me out for years! I get it, I hold pretty much every record in the division. I normally try to respect my elders but if you want it come get it. I’d literally fly you out to Albuquerque this weekend. You might want to test the strength of that jaw before you take a bite you cant chew.”

    - CM Punk is getting heat online over the fact that his fight in Chicago against Mike Jackson is on the main card while Holly Holmn vs. Megan Anderson is the main event of the prelims. Firstly, anyone who doesn’t understand why Punk is on the main show doesn’t understand anything about BUSINESS. He is a name and is a draw based on that name. Secondly, Punk himself knows he should be on the prelims but understands why they are putting him on the main show, which is exactly what I said above. Punk even noted that in writing by saying: “I understand too. If it was up to me, I'd be first fight on fight pass. Don't matter to me. Fans like to be outraged by stuff that doesn't matter.”

    - Nate Diaz allegedly assaulted Clay Guida at a Combate Americas show in Sacramento and Guida filed battery charges against Diaz. Diaz is now being investigated.

    - Former WWE Star Jack Swagger revealed that he is looking at debuting for Bellator in the fall or winter of 2017. He was originally set to debut this summer but he isn’t ready yet and has been taking a ton of independent bookings. If he is serious about fighting in Bellator and taking up MMA, he would need to fight sooner rather than later. The longer he waits, the harder it will become.

    - Congrats to MMA Journalist Ariel Helwani as he just signed on to join ESPN in June in a HUGE capacity. In an effort to boost the younger viewership demographic, Helwani is being signed for multiple roles. He will host the “Ariel Helwani MMA Show” podcast. He will join Chael Sonnen to co-host “Ariel & The Bad Guy” for the new ESPN+ streaming platform in a weekly show. He will also be a full time reporter for all things MMA on both regular ESPN as well as ESPN+.

    - Former UFC fighter and analyst Brian Stann has been hired by NBC to be the head of the “Pro Fight League’s” competition and rules committee. The first show the promotion is having will be held on the NBC Sports Network on June 7th.

    - BONUS Random ARTICLE of the week: I’d be fine with lifetime of torture.

    - BONUS Random ARTICLE of the week PART 1: This is absolutely a stupid idea and I really don’t “get it”. It doesn’t sound adventurous. It doesn’t sound fun. It doesn’t sound economical. It doesn’t look appealing. It’s just weird.

    - BONUS Random ARTICLE of the week PART 2: Amazing to me that people can be this stupid and bigoted in a world ruled by technology where everything can be filmed/streamed/posted/shared immediately. What a d*ck.

    - BONUS Random ARTICLE of the week PART 6: It NEVER ends. Sigh.

    - BONUS Random ARTICLE of the week PART 7: I HATE stories like this. I never understand. If you are mentally ill or unstable and want to take the coward’s way out, fine. I get it. Sometimes your mind works like that and there is nothing that can be done. But I HATE when parents take their children with them. A whole life and future wasted.

    - BONUS Random ARTICLE of the week PART 8: OH?!?!?! Don’t you think this should be investigated if true about what Bobbi Kristina wanted? That is kind of a big and important revelation if true considering how Whitney passed away no?

    - Avengers: Infinity War continues to power on as they are on pace to become only the 3rd film in movie history to gross $2 BILLION in their initial theatrical run. They opened in China to a WHOPPING $160 million opening weekend putting the film’s worldwide total at $1.6 BILLION as of Sunday evening. HOLY SH*T is this film a juggernaut or what? It is currently the 5th highest grossing movie worldwide of ALL TIME.

    - With the release of “Deadpool 2” today, it is expected that “Infinity War” will begin to stall at the box office as “Solo” also comes out NEXT week. So $2 billion may be tough but still doable.

    - Deadpool 2 is currently tracking to a $150 million opening weekend.

    - “X-Force”, a spin-off of “Deadpool 2” is set to begin filming in October which would delay a “Deadpool 3” from going into production and that means that X-Force may be the last of Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool because the Fox/Disney merger is set to close in September 2019.

    - To the surprise of no one, ABC’s “The Inhuman’s” was officially cancelled.

    - ABC has renewed Marvel’s “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” for a 6th season but for a reduced 13 episodes. I don’t know how I feel about this. I am excited that they picked it up but also upset that it is only for 13 episodes. I feel jipped. The 6th season was announced to be debuting in the SUMMER of 2019 meaning that it certainly could end this season with a tie in to the ending of “Infinity War” as season 6 won’t debut until AFTER Avengers 4 is in theaters. The summer debut also could in fact help extend the show’s lifespan according to ABC President Channing Dungey as he revealed with delayed viewing by the loyal fan base, the summer debut won’t effect “in-season” ratings and therefore worth keeping in that slot.

    - Gotham has been renewed by FOX for what will be the shows 5th and final season. The assumption is that it will end with Bruce Wayne becoming Batman for the first official time. Also, it was in fact revealed that even though actor Cameron Monaghan is playing the Joker, he stated that he was told he CANNOT use PURE GREEN for his hair color and under no circumstances was anyone to refer to his character as “The Joker” in any script. So ambiguity is what they are looking for because the film division at WB noted that they can’t “use” the Joker for Gotham.

    - For f*cks sake, WB executives and creative teams need to drink cyanide or something. Enough is enough. They announced that a Batman prequel titled “Pennyworth” all about Alfred the Butler has been picked up by the EPIX network. I mean…..really? WB cannot come up with anything worthwhile? Stop leeching off Batman and do something else. They have an entire library of characters. Better yet, create new ones. More Batman shows without Batman. WTF?

    - Fox has also replaced actor Clayne Crawford on their hit show Lethal Weapon. He has been re-casted by actor Sean William Scott.

    - The “Bad Boys” spin-off starring Gabrielle Union reprising her role from the film franchise of former D.E.A. agent and now police detective “Sydney Burnett” and partnered with Jessica Alba as “Detective Nancy McKenna” titled “L.A.’s Finest” was NOT picked up by NBC and this is being shopped around for a home next fall.

    - WB/DC’s “Shazam” has officially wrapped production. No Dwayne Johnson appearances on set of filming which is disappointing.

    - Paramount Pictures is moving ahead with a “Snake Eyes” spin-off of the Gi-Joe franchise. While he is a great character from an action movie standpoint, I find it hard that they are going to proceed with a film where the lead character DOESN’T SPEAK.

    - For those of you who have been raised on Lebron James or argue that he is the greatest of all time, ESPN is doing a 10 hour/multiple part “30 for 30” documentary on Michael Jordan. Do yourself a favor and watch it when it comes out because it will 100% change your opinion on Lebron being the greatest ever.

    - NBC is going ahead next season with Wednesday’s being known as #OneChicago as they are moving all of their “Chicago” shows to that date with Chicago Med at 8:00 pm ET, Chicago Fire at 9:00 pm ET and Chicago PD closing out the night at 10:00 pm ET.

    - The CW held their upfront presentations this week and have made some announcements with “Supergirl” moving to Sunday’s at 8:00 pm ETso that they don’t have to split a season with “Legends of Tomorrow”. Legends will be on Monday’s at 8:00 pm ET followed by “Arrow” switching to Monday’s at 9:00 pm ET. “The Flash” will keep their Tuesday at 8:00 pm ET timeslot and will be followed immediately by “Black Lightning” (which I started watching Season 1 by the way and it isn’t that bad). The big news however is that the annual crossover even will have the “Arrow-verse” meeting “Batwoman” (no not Batgirl, a different and not often used DC character) on the show as well as introduce Gotham City.

    - I didn’t see the finale of Arrow yet but I heard….not many good things. I really hope this show would get their act together. I am sick and tired of the constant peaks and valleys with this show. It needs consistency.
