T.G.I.F. with Matt Dawgs: #397

Good day to you all and welcome to We Want Insanity. I am your host for today, Matt Dawgs and this is my column. Today is the end of the work week and the time to look back at all the goings-on over the past seven days as I wrap it up with a bow and spout it out bit by bit. Buckle up. Enjoy the ride.

MATT NOTE: R.I.P. to actor Powers Boothe as he passed away over the weekend at age 68. His publicist says he died peacefully in his sleep of natural causes. He is best known for his role in HBO’s “Deadwood” but Marvel fans may most recently remember him from Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D./Avengers where he played Gideon Malick a member of the World Security Council/Hydra. He also plays the leader of the cowboys in one of the best Western films of all time, Tombstone.

BONUS MATT NOTE: R.I.P. also goes out to singer Chris Cornell of Soundgarden as he committed suicide on Wednesday in his hotel room following a concert in Detroit. This is such a weird story as his concert ended at 11:25 pm and he was said to be acting normally and in good spirits. He was found dead in his hotel less than 30 minutes after the concert hanging in his room. He was 52 years old and left behind a wife and two children.

WWE NEWS AND NOTES:

- During Raw on Monday, a commercial aired for Smackdown and said the following: “Tomorrow, for the first time EVER, The Phenomenal A.J. Styles goes one on one with.....Jinder Mahal.” Now is it just me or was this match a “dream match” that I didn’t know about? They made it seem like it was Hogan vs. Andre all over again. WTF? I get pushing Mahal, I really do but that was complete overkill.

- RAW this week was better than last week although not by much. The show definitely had a different feel with Braun Strowman being out and that is a good thing for Strowman because it is now noticeable when he isn’t there. It is such a shame because he has “IT”.

- It is refreshing to have Kurt Angle as a babyface general manager. I am looking forward to Stephanie coming back and interacting with him. I am also DYING for him to get physically involved in something and lead to his match already.

- Hurry and turn Roman Reigns heel already. Now is a perfect window to do it.

- Speaking of heel turns, was that a heel turn by Apollo Crews? I didn’t get it. It felt so out of place.

- And Goldust turning heel on R-Truth. That was random. I just hope it leads to Goldust getting some sort of mid-card to semi-main event push. Despite pushing 50, he can definitely still perform and should get a serious run.

- Alexa Bliss is ok in the ring. I hope she improves to upper echelon level talent in ring because her mic work is GOLD.

- So Alexa Bliss beats Bayley CLEAN with her finish to win the title. Then the following night on RAW Alexa Bliss pins Bayley in a six women match when she could have pinned either of Bayley’s partners so this obviously means that Bayley deserves a title shot despite losing to Bliss TWICE cleanly?

- An ECW chant over a kendo stick shot in 2017?

- PS – did someone rib Bliss by hiding the kendo stick to see how’d she react under pressure? That was BRUTAL having to watch her look for it. LOL.

- Balor vs. Reigns was fantastic. They have good chemistry together. Too bad Reigns had to win clean. Balor still should be protected for now.

- Rollins vs. Wyatt wasn’t that bad either. I like Wyatt being a tweener. He shouldn’t have friends and should be a face or a heel, just a loner.

- It sure seems like Smackdown is building to a Chris Jericho comeback on Kevin Owens a lot sooner than later despite Jericho being on tour. The way Kevin Owens BURIED him dead was a surefire sign of it.

- A.J. Styles got a good 15 minute match out of Jinder Mahal. I am impressed. I guess it was a dream match that no one asked for.

- “Day One Is H? What does that even mean?” The Fashion Police RULE!!!

- Hey. Do you remember last week when they aired a video of Rusev saying that he was coming to Smackdown this week to confront Shane McMahon? Well apparently he forgot or missed his flight or had car troubles or immigration issues because he never showed up on Smackdown nor was he mentioned. SMH.

- Naomi got a surprisingly decent match out of Carmella. Smackdown’s women’s division isn’t in as bad a shape as I thought it was.

- Smackdown is set to debut a new “picture-in-picture” for commercials on Smackdown. Essentially Smackdown will air in its entirety but when it is commercial time, Smackdown will air without sound in the inset box while the picture is full screen.

- Way too much to document with evidence so I will sum it up quickly for you. Earlier this week, former wrestler and current OVW trainer Rip Rogers (Best known for training John Cena, Batista, Brock Lesnar and Randy Orton) posted a statement that he says he received which basically bashed the style of work on the independents. It wasn’t far from the truth but noted that most matches are “Handshake, bunch of spots, hard strikes, dives, more hard strikes, insane finishing move, random kickouts, etc”. This sparked a bunch of controversy by the “Who’s Who” of internet darlings such as the Young Bucks replying to Rogers with “Sounds like a hell of a match!!!” and Ricochet coming late to the party with “Just got off a 14 hour plane ride and my phone is blowing up. Why am I being dragged back into controversy?” This then got compounded when WWE Champion Randy Orton replied to Rogers with “.....and dive.” Wrong thing to post as former WWE star and current one third of the Ring of Honor Trio’s champions Bully Ray posted a photo of him diving off the top onto his opponents at the War of the Worlds PPV show with the caption: “DIVE!!!”. This caused Orton to post that there is a difference between a young and hungry talent doing a dive with an old out of shape vet “falling”. Bully Ray then remarked that his tweet had nothing to do with him. Orton then had to “issue an apology” which saw him essentially bury not only Bully Ray but ROH and independents while proclaiming himself a superstar with a safe style that has made millions. This caused more people to get involved including Will Ospreay who used this as a chance to market a new t-shirt that says “....and dive” on it. LOL, GOLD overall for everyone involved.

- The 1st WWE U.K. special will air this afternoon at 3:00 pm ET (with an 8:00 pm ET replay) on the WWE Network. Jim Ross and Nigel McGuinness will be doing the commentary. Ross will also be calling the Tyler Bate vs. Pete Dunne title match tomorrow at NXT Takeover: Chicago.

- Despite injuring his ankle at an NXT live event last night, Tommasso Ciampa is still expected to be wrestling the Takeover show tomorrow night in Chicago.

- There has been talk of having Alasteir Black on the main roster sooner rather than later. He worked the WWE European tour since he is from Holland and RAW held a show in Rotterdam. But the reviews of his work on these shows has been exceptional and they may not use him much longer on the WWE U.K. or NXT shows.

- Stardom’s Io Shirai announced that she too is leaving the Stardom promotion and has accepted an offer to come to WWE. She will be joining fellow Stardom wrestler Kairi Hojo this making the promotion’s top 2 stars leaving for NXT.

- Best wishes to former ECW referee Jim Molineaux as he suffered a heart attack last week. He is currently recovering.

- The new Kurt Angle DVD will be released in August.

- Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson will be hosting Saturday Night Live tomorrow night.

- R.I.P. to “Pretty Boy” Doug Somers as he passed away earlier this week at age 65. He is best known for being the tag team partner of “Playboy” Buddy Rose in the AWA and had a bloody feud that essentially “made” the Midnight Rockers (Shawn Michaels and Marty Janetty) into stars.

- Despite being such a big star in Japan, am I the only one who thinks that Hideo Itami is not long for NXT/WWE anymore? He isn’t going to make the impact he should have. Between injuries and his not being able to adapt to the WWE style, it looks like he is a flop. Yes he is getting a title shot at Bobby Roode tomorrow night but he really doesn’t have a chance at winning.

- Five Star Wrestling in the United Kingdom has offered a “standing offer” to former WWE Star CM Punk of $1,000,000 to wrestle enter their 128-man tournament beginning on June 10th scheduled to end on December 30th. The owner, Daniel Hinkles noted that Punk has not replied to any of his inquiries but he has reached out through several different avenues including e-mail, his website, and social media as well as through mutual friends in the business. In reality, despite doing the MTV show, Punk is under contract to UFC thus cannot take a wrestling offer.

  • IMPACT WRESTLING NEWS and NOTES:

    - Matt Sydal has officially signed a contract with Impact.

    - There are plans to bring back the “World Cup” with Impact as the U.S. representative, Pro Wrestling NOAH as the Japan rep, AAA as the Mexican rep and some other independent non-Impact talents to represent other countries.

    - Despite Dorian Roldan claiming that Lucha Underground wrestlers will be working for Impact, head of talent for LU Vampiro noted that this will NOT be the case.

    - While I did not watch the entire show, go out of your way to see last night’s Ultimate X match between Low-Ki, Trevor Lee and Andrew Everett in the main event. It may have been the best Ultimate X match the company has ever had in any incarnation.

Ring of Honor / Lucha Underground / Independent / International News and Notes:

    - R.I.P. to Wayne Van Dyke a.k.a. Rick Delicious as he passed away over the weekend at age 29. I noted his story a few weeks ago where he had a heart attack in the middle of a tag team match and then had 2 subsequent heart attacks following, one en route to the hospital and a 3rd in the hospital before being placed in a medically induced coma and having his body temperature lowered to prevent further heart attacks. He never came out of said coma and passed away. This is such a tragic story and a glowing example of why all wrestlers on the independent and professional wrestling circuit need to get annual physicals and get checked out.

    - Apparently yesterday afternoon NY time, Ricochet and Will Ospreay topped their Best of the Super Juniors match from last year that got the world buzzing at this year’s tournament in Japan. WOW. I cannot wait to see this match sometime this weekend.

    - Adam Cole was “super kicked” out of the Bullet Club last weekend by the Young Bucks and Marty Scurll took his place. Cole is done with ROH and New Japan and is expected to debut with NXT sometime over the next few weeks/months.

    - Former WWE star Simon Gotch, now known as Simon Grimm, was backstage at the ROH PPV.

    - I totally didn’t expect Christopher Daniels to retain the ROH title last weekend. It was a pleasant surprise but I do think Cody will win the title sooner rather than later. Likely at the next ROH PPV where he is scheduled to main event against Christopher Daniels.

    - The next ROH PPV will be on June 23rd.

    - ROH’s Final Battle PPV in December will once again be held at the Hammerstein Ballroom in New York.

    - Despite announcing a few weeks ago that he will be working in the G-1 Tournament, Cody has taken a booking on August 5th with WrestleCircus which is smack dab in the middle of the G-1. So unless he plans on cancelling that booking last minute, looks like he isn’t in the tournament.

    - New Japan’s Hiroshi Tanahashi ruptured his bicep at the ROH TV tapings in Philadelphia. This is BRUTAL for NJPW as it should keep him out of action for the rest of the year since he should require surgery however....he is likely going to delay surgery as long as he can (He is going to attempt to make it to the Long Beach shows in July) or he is going to avoid surgery altogether which is insane because he is going to end up with permanent damage in his arm. That is NOT a good thing. As of now, New Japan is keeping him out of action until June 9th where he is expected to work that day and then work the Dominion PPV as well as the Long Beach shows.

    - For the Long Beach shows, New Japan held a press conference with AXS to announce that the Friday, July 1st show will air LIVE on AXS and the Saturday, July 2nd show will air “live to tape” (on delay). They also announced the participants who will be wrestling both shows that weekend. They are:

  • IWGP Champion: Kazuchika Okada
  • Kenny Omega
  • Hiroshi Tanahashi
  • Michael Elgin
  • Kushida
  • Jushin “Thunder” Liger
  • Juice Robinson
  • David Finlay
  • Sho Tanaka and Yohei Komatsu
  • Jay White
  • Billy Gunn
  • Yoshitatsu
  • Tomohigo Ishii
  • Will Ospreay
  • Tetsuya Naito
  • Hiromu Takahashi
  • Sanada
  • Evil
  • Bushi
  • Zack Sabre Jr.
  • Jay Lethal
  • The Briscoes (Mark & Jay)
  • War Machine
  • Dragon Lee
  • The Young Bucks (Nick & Matt Jackson)
  • Cody
  • Marty Scurll
  • Bad Luck Fale
  • Hangman Page
  • The Guerrillas of Destiny
  • Yujiro Takahashi
  • - As a sign of how pissed New Japan is at Matt Sydal due to his firing from New Japan as well as how strict marijuana use is, New Japan World did NOT stream his match against Marty Scurll at War of the Worlds.

    - New Japan Pro Wrestling announced during the ROH “War of the Worlds” PPV that during their Long Beach California shows in July that they will crown an IWGP United States Champion. They have also confirmed that the IWGP Intercontinental title will be defended that weekend. Both Jay Lethal and Hangman Page are confirmed for the U.S. Title tournament.

    - Will Ospreay revealed in an interview with ESPN that he plans on retiring from traveling at age 30 and only plans on wrestling in the United Kingdom after that. He is currently 24 and if he keeps wrestling at the pace and style that he wrestles at, he may not have a choice about retiring at 30. Only thing is, he won’t be wrestling in the U.K. then or anywhere else.

    - Congrats to ROH Star Kenny King as he is one of the contestants on ABC’s “The Bachelorette” debuting on Monday.

    - Billy Corgan has signed a purchase agreement for the NWA name and intellectual property as well as the NWA on Demand website which includes the Paul Boesch Houston tape library. So essentially he has himself a small gold mine that if he chooses to sell to WWE, he could recoup the cost of purchasing the NWA name/IP. According to sources, the entire sale cost less than $1,000,000 which is a significant discount from what he was willing to buy TNA for.

    - Not sure what this means regarding their relationship however AAA was forced to remove a match from their weekly TV show involving Aerostar & Drago vs. Killshot & Marty the Moth due to Killshot and Marty being Lucha Underground characters. That is interesting since AAA and LU have a working arrangement.

    MMA News and Notes:

    - One down, one to go. UFC President Dana White has confirmed that Conor McGregor has SIGNED the contract to fight Floyd Mayweather in a boxing match. All that is needed is for Dana to convince Floyd of the terms and we have a fight. I am not saying that convincing Floyd will be easy but we are one step closer.

    - Despite UFC moving on from the potential Michael Bisping vs. George St. Pierre UFC Middleweight Title fight, Bisping isn’t. He noted on his podcast that he is still recovering from knee surgery and will be unable to fight anyone, anytime soon. My assumption is that he is going to milk this injury until he gets his shot at GSP. UFC is going to be left with no choice but to create yet another interim title in his absence. It is unfair for Yoel Romero to have to wait much longer or risk his title shot by fighting someone else.

    - It is a tough situation for both Bisping and UFC to be in. On one hand, UFC cannot sit around and have the middleweight title being idle. On the flip side, on MANY occasions in the past, Bisping has taken fights on short notice to save PPV events including the one where he WON the title he has as well as fighting more people who have been popped for PEDs than anyone else in the promotion. So if he wants a fight that will guarantee him his first ever 7-figure payday, he absolutely should wait for it. It is only fair for all of the sacrifices he has made for UFC in the past.

    - UFC has announced that former matchmaker Joe Silva will be inducted into the 2017 UFC Hall of Fame class.

    - So it looks like UFC Heavyweight Champion Stipe Miocic is the REAL DEAL. He made super short work of former champion Junior Dos Santos last weekend knocking him out in less than 3 minutes of the first round. Miocic has won his last 5 fights via knockout with the last 4 coming in the 1st round. WOW. PS – he has steamrolled a who’s who of top UFC Heavyweights. Mark Hunt, Andrei Arlovski, Fabricio Werdum, Alistair Overeem and Junior Dos Antos.

    - JDS really needs to consider hanging it up. He has never recovered from the 2 mauling’s he received at the hands of Cain Velasquez.

    - With his win over Jorge Masvidal, Demian Maia will get the next UFC Welterweight title shot against champion Tyrone Woodley.

    - Joanna Jedrzejczyk is a WARRIOR. While she didn’t finish her, she completely obliterated Jessica Andrade winning every round and setting a UFC record for a championship fight by landing 225 significant strikes. WOW.

    - How is Frankie Edgar still a beast? While I thought he would win, I didn’t think he’d steamroll Yair Rodriquez like he did. WOW.

    - With the win however, Edgar is really backed into a corner now. UFC can’t possibly give him another title shot at Jose Aldo now that Aldo is champ since Aldo has beaten him on two occasions. However, Edgar is really the only natural choice in the division.

    - Dustin Poirier is appealing his no-contest against Eddie Alvarez from last weekend as he should. He should have picked up the DQ win. Yes, Alvarez did NOT throw that knee intentionally trying to break the rules however Herb Dean called it wrong because even if it was an accidental foul, it should have been called a DQ since it was illegal.

    - With Daniel Cormier defending the UFC Light Heavyweight title at UFC 214 in Anaheim, UFC President Dana White confirmed that Jim Manuwa will be fighting on the undercard of the show in case either Cormier or Jones gets injured during training.

    - DOWN GOES GARBRANDT....possibly. As of right now, it looks like UFC Lightweight Champion Cody Garbrandt is OUT of his UFC 213 title defense against T.J. Dillashaw due to a back injury. Dillashaw has publicly stated that he would like to challenge Demetrious Johnson for the fly weight title should his title fight against Garbrandt get cancelled. Johnson did note that he has no interest in fighting Dillashaw because Dillashaw is not a champion and shouldn’t be allowed to cut the line from a different weight class to get a shot.

    - WME-IMG is hosting a UFC Athlete Retreat in Las Vegas this coming weekend and has invited the entire UFC roster. All travel and lodging is being paid by UFC and will provide the athletes an opportunity to meet with WME-IMG staff that now works for UFC including management and owners Ari Emanuel and Patrick Whitesell. They will also have the official grand opening of the UFC Performance Institute.

    - “Dana White’s Tuesday Night Contender Series” will begin airing on UFC Fight Pass on July 11th. It will be a weekly show that will feature people making their UFC debut or trying to win a contract.

    - Remember the hullabaloo when Anthony Johnson announced his retirement and everyone thought it was because he was offered a job as a strength and conditioning coach in the NFL? Well that wasn’t it. Johnson will be opening up a marijuana dispensary. He also noted that he is 100% retired and not coming back. He said he was NEVER a fighter. He was an athlete who’s skills translated well into MMA. He never wanted to be a fighter nor was it his dream to be one and he wanted to preserve his health.

UFC 212 is on Saturday, June 3rd, 2017 from Rio De Janeiro Brazil and the line-up is as follows:

  • UNDISPUTED UFC FEATHERWEIGHT TITLE: Jose Aldo © vs. Max Holloway ©
  • Karolina Kowalkiewicz vs. Claudia Gadelha
  • Vitor Belfort vs. Nate Marquardt
  • UFC 213 is on Saturday, July 8th, 2017 from Las Vegas Nevada and the line-up is as follows:

  • UFC WELTERWEIGHT TITLE: Cody Garbrandt © vs. T.J. Dillashaw
  • Robbie Lawler vs. Donald Cerrone
  • Fabricio Werdum vs. Alistair Overeem
  • Anthony Pettis vs. Jim Miller
  • UFC 214 is on Saturday, July 29th, 2017 from Anaheim California and the line-up is as follows:

  • UFC LIGHT HEAVYWEIGHT TITLE: Daniel Cormier © vs. Jon Jones
  • Jim Manuwa vs. TBD

    - BONUS Random ARTICLE of the week PART 1: Only in New York.

    - BONUS Random ARTICLE of the week PART 2: Pay attention people. Or as the kids say today, “Stay Woke”. This story is quietly sneaking under the radar and by the time something is done to combat it, it may be too late. They are halfway to hitting California people. That is NOT a good thing.

    - BONUS Random ARTICLE of the week PART 3: Great to see that our national monuments are properly protected by top of the line security. That’s sarcasm by the way.

    - BONUS Random ARTICLE of the week PART 4: I honestly don’t care if she was a he or whatever lame excuse was being used. He/She is a traitor to this country and I do feel like 7 years was definitely not enough.

    - BONUS Random ARTICLE of the week PART 5: Times Square Terror!!! Even though someone lost his life, it could have been a MILLION times worse.

    - BONUS Random ARTICLE of the week PART 6: Zero sympathy from me. This guy is such a douche and I feel like he is getting off easy to be honest.

BONUS Random ARTICLE of the week PART 7: Hero. This is what New York now is. After 9/11, more people are willing to get involved especially when they think terror is involved.

BONUS Random ARTICLE of the week PART 8: There honestly is NO EXCUSE for this to happen. Even as a mistake. Terrible.

    - Dwayne ”The Rock” Johnson is actively campaigning for actor Armie Hammer to join the DC Cinematic Universe to play the role of Shazam.

    - There are major rumors circulating that “Justice League” is undergoing MASSIVE reshoots that change the complexity of the entire film and a significant amount from the trailer will NOT be in the movie similar to Suicide Squad. This is NOT a good sign for WB/DC.

    - Major shoutout to actor Keiynan Lonsdale of CW’s The Flash (Wally West/Kid Flash) as he revealed over the weekend that he is bi-sexual in an Instagram post. Not too many people would risk coming out for fear of backlash or receiving less opportunities so good for him.

    - I thought the Flash was having their finale this week until I saw the ending and realized that was a weird way to close the season. Duh. Silly me. It is next week now. But it was still a damn good episode. As I noted last week which was “meh” that it was the calm before the storm. A comedy episode to hold off until the drama comes. Good stuff.

    - Side note: Bet you missed the Easter Egg when Barry and Snart were walking through A.R.G.U.S. huh? You did? One of the cells holding prisoners had the name “Cheetah” on it. You know, the Wonder Woman villain.

    - Arrow is also getting damn good with so many things happening and coming to a head. I am sure glad the rebounded from last year. Next week’s finale looks to be awesome.

    - CW released their schedule for next season and for the first time in the show’s history, Arrow will move to Thursday at 9:00 pm ET instead of the usual Wednesday 8:00 pm ET slot it has been in since it debuted. This is NOT necessarily good news for Arrow as they will now be going head to head with the NBC juggernaut “This Is Us”.

    - Speaking of Arrow, CW released the trailer for “Black Lightning” (above in the video section) and it will NOT be a part of the “Arrow-verse” for some reason.

    - So last week I was all cavalier about Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. being renewed and everything was so promising. Well this week ABC released their line-ups and not only is the show not returning until 2018 (Inhumans airing in the fall) but when it returns, it will be in the official TV DEATH SLOT of Friday at 9:00 pm ET. Ugh.

    - The season finale of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. however was awesome in every way and wrapped up a ton of things nicely. The Coulson scene at the end definitely raised a ton of questions about next season and where they are going with it. Will they cross over with the Inhuman’s? Were those people at the end S.H.I.E.L.D./U.S. Government? What is going on? Plenty of cliffhangers.

    - As expected, CBS has cancelled “Training Day”. From what I understand it was doing decently in the ratings but once Bill Paxton passed away, they weren’t going to recast or continue.

    - There is a Judge Dredd TV show in the works titled “Mega City One” and the latest from the rumor mill is that they are trying to woo actor Karl Urban to reprise his role from the 2012 film. For those of you, that has not seen that film, GO WATCH IMMEDIATELY. It is all sorts of awesome despite not doing well at the box office.

    - Sony Pictures announced earlier today that they have signed actor Tom Hardy to play the role of Eddie Brock/Venom in an R-rated stand-alone movie about the character. This take on Venom will NOT be a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and will NOT feature Tom Holland a.k.a. Peter Parker/Spider-Man in it.
