T.G.I.F. with Matt Dawgs: #399

Good day to you all and welcome to We Want Insanity. I am your host for today, Matt Dawgs and this is my column. Today is the end of the work week and the time to look back at all the goings-on over the past seven days as I wrap it up with a bow and spout it out bit by bit. Buckle up. Enjoy the ride.

MATT NOTE: #Covfefe.

- 1.75. That was Monday’s Raw rating. That rating was the 2nd lowest rating in Monday Night Raw history. EVER. As in the 20+ years that RAW has been on the air, only one show did worse. EVER. There was no NBA game against RAW. Most television shows were on repeat due to the Memorial Day holiday. No other holiday edition of RAW has done worse than that one. All of those things should tell you something about the quality of the shows and the feelings people have on the product right now. Ouch.

- Raw was just another show. It wasn’t “bad” as other recent shows have been but it wasn’t knock it out the park good either. The Roman Reigns vs. Seth Rollins main event was FANTASTIC. Just an overall excellent match and Rollins really helped Reigns along. It also shows that Reigns is in the similar spot that Cena was in for many years. If Reigns is in the ring with a lesser opponent, the matches stink up the building. But put Reigns in there with someone who can go and he elevates himself and his work to keep up. Notice how all of Reigns good matches whether it is Finn Balor, Triple H, Seth Rollins, etc. and they are damn good. Matches against Big Show and Bray Wyatt and....well you know.

- The Triple Threat match with Samoa Joe being victorious over Bray Wyatt and Finn Balor was also very good. I think Balor is coming out on top on Sunday and going onto face Lesnar at “Great Balls of Fire” which should be interesting to say the least.

- I like this Enzo/Big Cass/The Revival/Corey Graves thing. I have a feeling that they are going to lead to the swerve and Cass is turning heel on Enzo.

- I would be very surprised if the angle involving Kurt Angle (No pun intended) doesn’t end up being the return of Stephanie McMahon and/or HHH. They have been gone since April and they need to have that face/heel dynamic for some reason even though Angle has been completely fine on his own without her.

- I am not sure how WWE has yet to realize that you CAN NEVER catch lighting in a bottle twice. On Monday during RAW they attempted to once again capitalize on a “This Is Your Life” segment with Alexa Bliss making fun of Bayley. The only one to date that was successful was Mick Foley and The Rock. Not one has succeeded since.

- PS – Did WWE really allow a scripted line during that segment where Bayley’s best friend made it like Bayley was a dork because she never wanted to go out in high school because she wanted to watch Raw and Smackdown? They do realize that was burying their own product because it made it seem like watching Raw and Smackdown were uncool things to do. How did someone miss that?

- So Apollo Crews didn’t turn heel when he nailed Enzo a few weeks ago on RAW? I am confused.

- Austin Aries HAS to win the cruiserweight title on Sunday. If he loses, he is done for. There has been too much chasing and not enough winning. It sucks because Neville is awesome in his role but Aries has been chasing long enough.

- Goldust being awesome again is awesome. His promo is money and like I noted last week, having him as a heel mid-card act is going to be beneficial to a lot of talents that could work with him at live events. It is like “on the job” training.

- R-Truth was no slouch himself with his promo. Too bad his in-ring work isn’t on par with Goldust or else they’d both be useful in the mid-card. Sadly for him, when this feud is up it is back to prelims for him. Hey, does anyone else remember when he and Miz were a serious heel alliance that got a main event push?

- Jericho despite his claims otherwise has to be coming back soon. No way is Kevin Owens mentioning him every week without that plan in play.

- I do believe we are heading to a Nakamura vs. Owens feud which means Nak is getting the U.S. title soon. Way too soon for him to be losing.

- Good to have the New Day back but again, way too soon to take the titles off the Usos. They are great in their new roles.

- Poor American Alpha. Sad.

- As noted in this column last week, Smackdown is having a Women’s Money In The Bank title match at the PPV. The competitors will be: Charlotte vs. Becky Lynch vs. Natalya vs. Carmella vs. Tamina. This also caused Nia Jax to throw some SERIOUS shade from the Raw side as she tweeted: “Wow! First ever Money in the Bank Women’s Ladder Match! Amazing how #SmackdownLive uses their ENTIRE women roster every Tuesday!!” Ouch. Brutal burial of the brand she is on. But she is correct since she hasn’t been on television in about a month.

- Despite the big push of Jinder Mahal and the attempt to get into the India market, the proposed September tour of India is NOT happening. The reason it was noted that it was happening is because last year when Alberto Del Rio was still with the company and toured India for WWE in an effort to gain traction in the market, he noted that WWE was planning on touring the country in September 2017. Well those dates were never locked in or confirmed and they are not planning on doing so at this time.

- A.J. Styles has to be winning the MITB briefcase no? He and Kevin Owens are the only two I can see possibly winning it in that match.

- John Cena revealed via Twitter that he will be returning to WWE for the July 4th episode of Smackdown Live. The timing is interesting because his Fox show “American Grit” begins airing on June 11th and I thought that show required him to film weekly.

- Movie producer and comic book creator Mark Miller is working on a movie adaptation of his comic book “Superior” and would like John Cena to play the lead. The comic is about a 12-year old boy that gets a wish to become an adult superhero. Miller said that he only wants Cena for the role and no one else. He noted that he is NOT a wrestling fan and had no idea who John Cena was until he saw Amy Schumer’s “Trainwreck” and felt that Cena stole the movie and he would be perfect for the role. For those of you who bash Cena’s acting ability, please see his role in both “Trainwreck” and “Sisters” and then come back to me because he is hilarious in them.

- WWE Cruiserweight star Austin Aries released a book earlier this week regarding his life as a vegetarian. The book is titled “Food Fight: My Plant-Powered Journey from the Bingo Halls to the Big Time” and it goes in depth on his eating and training habits as well as the difficulty of being a professional wrestler while clean eating.

- In awful timing, Tommaso Ciampa needs surgery due to working the NXT Takeover show while injured. He toughed through the ladder match with an injured ankle and ended up tearing his ACL during the match. Not sure of the recovery timetable but it usually falls anywhere from 6 to 8 months. That is awful news since he and Johnny Gargano were about to start their feud and eventual singles runs. Sucks.

- WWE CFO George Barrios revealed that WWE will be working with both ICW and Progress in the United Kingdom in the future and he fully believes that Vince McMahon will give the OK for both promotions to have their shows air on the WWE Network. That would be a huge step for them. As a sign of their relationship, WWE is allowing Noam Dar to not only appear at an ICW show on July 29th from Glasgow but they are allowing him to wrestle on the show. WWE in the past has allowed wrestlers under contract to appear on shows for ICW including most recently Finn Balor and Mick Foley but has not allowed anyone under contract to wrestle for another promotion in YEARS with the exception of those who are allowed to fulfill their independent dates that they had before signing.

- With the cancellation of the ITV “World of Sports” tapings in the U.K., several talents that were contracted by ITV have asked out of their deals. That includes the female wrestler Viper as she will be working the upcoming NXT Women’s Tournament this summer. Their ITV contract prevented them from working other television shows.

- Io Shirai will NOT be in the Mae Young classic. Kairi Hojo however is expected to debut in that tournament and will likely be the favorite to win.

- There are a few more international female talents who are set to debut with Shirai and Hojo in a few weeks including Evie from New Zealand, Nixon Newell from the United Kingdom and Demi Bennett from Australia.

- In a recent interview with William Regal in the U.K., he noted that one of the biggest success stories in the company is Sasha Banks and he is extremely proud of her. He said that he had pushed for her to be signed by the old regime of the developmental system but no one wanted to give her a chance. He then said that the old regime is completely gone (no one from that system is still employed by WWE) and that once Triple H overhauled everything, viewpoints changed and people were more willing to look outside the norm. Regal noted that Banks was the first person he ever went to bat for to be signed. He also noted that he is the one who came up with the Bayley gimmick of a huge female fan that is naïve. He said the came up with the idea long before he met Bayley and didn’t have a clue as to who could pull it off. Then he saw Bayley at a tryout in Los Angeles and told Dusty Rhodes about his idea and both knew Bayley could do it because she was exactly the character, a huge fan who is way too kind of a person.

- Naomi and The Usos were off all live events last weekend as they were taping a television show which was NOT Total Divas. No word on whether or not the show is based on them or if they were doing a guest appearance on another program.

- Congrats to Summer Rae as she has made the Maxim Magazine “Hot 100” list.

- The drug charges against former WWE Star Sean “X-Pac” Waltman were dropped by the district attorney’s office as the pills he was carrying from Los Angeles to London was NOT methamphetamine as originally charged. Once that was revealed, there was no choice but to drop the charges since he was not planning on distributing the drugs and the weed he had on him was a legal amount to carry with him.

- For those wondering since it has been months, WWE is still talking to and bringing back Hulk Hogan. It is just a matter of when he comes back. Timing is everything and in actuality, the comments he made are NEVER going to go away so that is what has caused the hesitation.

- In a recent interview with new mom Brie Bella, she noted that she is not retired and does plan on wrestling for WWE again at some point in the future.

- WWE Network producers are pushing for a Vince McMahon “Table for 3” special. That will be awesome especially when they get guests to join him. How would McMahon, Austin and Hogan sound?

- The next Table for 3 airs this Monday following RAW with Ric Flair, Bruno Sammartino and Bob Orton.

WWE EXTREME RULES PPV is THIS SUNDAY from Baltimore, Maryland and the line-up is as follows:

  • #1 CONTENDER’S FATAL FIVE-WAY: Roman Reigns vs. Samoa Joe vs. Seth Rollins vs. Bray Wyatt vs. Finn Balor
  • WWE INTERCONTINENTAL TITLE: Dean Ambrose © vs. The Miz w/Maryse
  • WWE RAW WOMEN’S TITLE: Alexa Bliss © vs. Bayley in a KENDO STICK ON A POLE MATCH Match
  • WWE TAG TEAM TITLES: The Hardys © vs. Sheamus & Cesaro in a STEEL CAGE MATCH
  • MIXED TAG MATCH: Rich Swann & Sasha Banks vs. Noam Dar & Alicia Fox
  • WWE MONEY IN THE BANK PPV is on Sunday, June 18th, 2017 from St. Louis Missouri and the line-up is as follows:

  • WWE TITLE: Jinder Mahal © w/The Singh Brothers vs. Randy Orton
  • MONEY IN THE BANK MATCH: A.J. Styles vs. Baron Corbin vs. Sami Zayn vs. Dolph Ziggler vs. Kevin Owens vs. Shinsuke Nakamura
  • SMACKDOWN WOMEN’S MONEY IN THE BANK MATCH: Charlotte vs. Becky Lynch vs. Natalya vs. Carmella vs. Tamina
  • WWE SMACKDOWN TAG TEAM TITLES: The Usos © vs. The New Day

    - As a cost cutting measure, Impact only took a limited roster (25 talents in total) of talent to India last weekend for their tapings. That means we are going to see a lot of the same faces for several weeks unless they film stuff in the U.S. to add into the show. The in-ring action will be much of the same faces.

    - Impact went the obvious route while taping in India. Spoiler alert, Sonjay Dutt captured the X-Division title from Low-Ki in an excellent match that played into storylines as well since Ki “injured” Dutt’s eye when he won the title. Smart booking since Dutt was super popular in the country and also he has NEVER won the X-Title despite his lengthy time on and off in the company since inception.

    - While the quality of the shows has improved in recent weeks, the shows still lack star power and the ratings haven’t increased. That being said, something needs to be done as Impact’s deal with Pop TV expires in January. So there are only a few months left to right the ship.

IMPACT’S SLAMMIVERSARY PPV is on Sunday, July 2nd, 2017 from Orlando Florida and the line-up is as follows:

  • UNIFICATION OF IMPACT TITLE WITH GFW TITLE: Bobby Lashley © vs. Alberto El Patron ©
  • Jeremy Borash & Joseph Park vs. Josh Matthews & “Big Poppa Pump” Scott Steiner
  • FULL METAL MAYHEM MATCH: Eddie Edwards & Alisha Edwards vs. Davey Richards & Angelina Love
  • STRAP MATCH: Ethan Carter III vs. “Cowboy” James Storm
  • 2 OUT OF 3 FALLS X-DIVISION TITLE: Sonjay Dutt © vs. Low-Ki

Ring of Honor / Lucha Underground / Independent / International News and Notes:

    - Congrats to Ring of Honor as they have landed a television deal on DSport which is a new network in India. It is NOT a major network but airing in India is a feat within itself.

    - ROH has confirmed that Christopher Daniels will defend the ROH title against Cody on the June 23rd “Best In The World” PPV from Boston.

    - The list of potential departures from ROH continues to grow as Dalton Castle’s contract expires at the end of June and WWE is extremely interested in him.

    - The Best of the Super Juniors finals is set with Will Ospreay vs. Kushida. Being that Ospreay of 0 – 2 vs. Kushida and Ospreay is also the defending Super Juniors winner, I think he repeats this year. That is just my guess. The winner of the tournament will get a shot at the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Title at the New Japan Dominion show next Sunday against Hiromu Takahashi. Dominion will be headlines by Kazuchika Okada defending the IWGP Heavyweight title in a rematch from the Wrestle Kingdom Tokyo Dome show against Kenny Omega.

    - For those who missed it, Lucha Underground returned this week with the mid-season premiere of their show. The show featured ONE match only which was an “All Night Long” match between Johnny Mundo and The Mack (Willie Mack). An All Night Long match is an Ironman match and it was said to be excellent. I really wish Mundo would come back to WWE for one last run. They could use the talent/star power right now and it would be a great opportunity for him to be featured in the main event.

    - Konnan revealed via his podcast that The Crash promotion is close to finalizing a television deal which would be HUGE to them.

    - Mayu Iwatani of Stardom who was the #3 star behind Io Shirai and Kairi Hojo was going on a retirement tour. With the departures of both Shirai and Hojo to NXT, she has decided to stay in order to be the top star and help the promotion.

    - WWN, parent company of Evolve donated $1,000 to the funeral expenses for Wayne Van Dyke a.k.a. Ric Delicious. When not wrestling, he worked on the ring crew when Evolve or other WWN companies held shows in Florida.

    - Former WWE Star Jack Swagger has been wrestling some shows under the name JOCK Swagger is now wrestling as Jake Swagger. One would think that if WWE were to have issue with his name, they’d likely have issue with the SWAGGER part and not the Jack/Jock/Jake part. SMH.

    - Interesting to note that WWE Hall of Famer Lita is wrestling a show for North East Wrestling. This is the 2nd show she has wrestled on in as many months. I wonder if she has the itch to wrestle full time or even part time again.

    - Guess I have been under a rock or something but apparently Savio Vega has broken away from WWC in Puerto Rico and started his own promotion called WWL.

    - Five Star Wrestling in the U.K. had been boasting about an upcoming 128 man tournament to take place over the summer. Well it was set to kick off next weekend in Liverpool on June 10th. They have since postponed the event due to the bombings in Manchester and the tournament will now begin....IN FEBRUARY 2018. I guess out of respect for the victims of the bombings? WTF?

    MMA News and Notes:

    - Alexander Gustafsson looked as good as he has ever looked over the weekend in defeating Glover Teixeira in stunning fashion via 5th round knockout. Despite it going to the final round, Gustafsson did everything right and was dominating the fight. He is now next in line for the UFC Light Heavyweight Title shot against the winner of Daniel Cormier vs. Jon Jones. Following the win in front of his hometown fans in Stockholm Sweden, Gustafsson proposed to his girlfriend in the Octagon.

    - Speaking of Cormier, congrats to him as he was married last weekend.

    - George St. Pierre revealed that he has an eye injury which is why he was unable to be ready to return in July. He still has not had his vision recovered and he is not allowed to spar until September at the earliest which is why he is targeting November as his return date. He also claimed he had informed UFC of this a long time ago yet they still proceeded to go ahead with the press conference between him and UFC Middleweight Champion Michael Bisping.

    - GSP is also noting that he plans on retiring whenever he loses. So his comeback is now officially a retirement tour as each fight he has going forward can be billed as possibly his final MMA fight.

    - In news that cannot be pleasing to hear by UFC officials, UFC Women’s Featherweight Champion Germaine de Randamie has noted that she plans on dropping back down to 135 lbs. despite the fact that she is the Women’s 145 lb. champion. What a terrible mess that division has become since it was originally created for Cristiane “Cyborg” Justino. Randamie also noted that she has NO PLANS at all to give Cyborg a shot at the title since she is a documented and well known cheater.

    - UFC is trying to book Cris “Cyborg” Justino against Cat Zingano for UFC 214 in Anaheim. Um....OUCH. Poor Zingano.

    - Dan Hardy has been given medical clearance by his doctors to return to MMA and is now in the USADA testing pool. He still needs to be cleared and licensed by an athletic commission. This is not a good decision in my eyes. He wants to get a fight against a veteran in UFC but I don’t think UFC will give him a fight. If they do, they are making a big mistake. He had a serious heart ailment and that is not something he should toy around with.

    - Despite it being reported everywhere, including by me and by Vitor Belfort himself, apparently we were all wrong as Vitor has ONE MORE fight remaining on his UFC contract AFTER tomorrow’s fight against Nate Mardquardt. Belfort has publicly said he wants to fight people his own age and named Chael Sonnen and Wanderlei Silva as potential future opponents which tells you what his plans are once he is done with UFC.

    - In addition to T.J. Dillashaw wanting to drop in weight to challenge Demetrious Johnson for his title, Cody Garbrandt revealed that he wants to heal his back injury and challenge Johnson as well. Honestly, no way these guys are pushing for that angle themselves. This is someone in UFC convincing them to do it in order to get a marquee fight from Johnson since he is cruising through his division. In all honesty, it is a good plan because those fights will draw more than anything else Johnson has done.

    - Dana White has still not met with Floyd Mayweather directly yet regarding the potential mega fight with Conor McGregor yet but noted that he believes a 50/50 split is more than fair. I am hoping and praying to God that Dana doesn’t believe that for a second because there is a zero percent chance that Floyd agrees to that. Floyd is the draw. Yes, Conor is a draw himself but he isn’t Floyd. Floyd is the one selling this fight to casuals. Not Conor.

    - Jim Manuwa’s opponent for UFC 214 has been confirmed as Volkan Oezdemir. The reason he is being placed on this card is in case either Daniel Cormier or Jon Jones is forced to withdraw from the fight last minute, he can step in and replace one of them.

    - Tomorrow’s UFC announce team will consist of Jon Anik, Brian Stann and Dominick Cruz.

    - Ronda Rousey was officially named one of the coached for ABC’s reboot of “Battle of the Network Stars”. The show was a staple in the 1970’s and 1980’s that featured teams from the big 3 networks (ABC, NBC, CBS) competing in athletic team competitions such as tug of war, etc.

    - Bellator has signed Heather Hardy, the WBC International Women’s Bantamweight Champion. She is 20 – 0 in boxing and is expected to debut at the June 24th Bellator show from Madison Square Garden.

UFC 212 is TOMORROW NIGHT from Rio De Janeiro Brazil and the line-up is as follows:

  • UNDISPUTED UFC FEATHERWEIGHT TITLE: Jose Aldo © vs. Max Holloway ©
  • Karolina Kowalkiewicz vs. Claudia Gadelha
  • Vitor Belfort vs. Nate Marquardt
  • UFC 213 is on Saturday, July 8th, 2017 from Las Vegas Nevada and the line-up is as follows:

  • UFC WOMEN’S BANTAMWEIGHT TITLE: Amanda Nunes © vs. Valentina Shevchenko
  • INTERIM UFC MIDDLEWEIGHT TITLE: Yoel Romero vs. Robert Whitaker
  • Robbie Lawler vs. Donald Cerrone
  • Fabricio Werdum vs. Alistair Overeem
  • Anthony Pettis vs. Jim Miller
  • UFC 214 is on Saturday, July 29th, 2017 from Anaheim California and the line-up is as follows:

  • UFC LIGHT HEAVYWEIGHT TITLE: Daniel Cormier © vs. Jon Jones
  • Jim Manuwa vs. Volkan Oezdemir
  • Chan Sung Jung a.k.a The Korean Zombie vs. Ricardo Lamas
  • Renan Barao vs. Aljamain Sterling
  • Sage Northcutt vs. Claudio Puelles
  • Cris “Cyborg” Justino vs. TBD

    - THIS LINK is for LIFE. Thank you soldiers. WELCOME HOME BLOG

    - BONUS Random ARTICLE of the week: Where did it go all wrong for him? I am not a golf fan so I haven’t followed his career as those who are but he was on top of the world and on pace to be the biggest star in ALL of sports. What happened?

    - BONUS Random ARTICLE of the week PART 1: Tragic. People seem to think that going into a river is similar to swimming in the ocean. It isn’t. Rivers are dangerous. Even if you are an excellent swimmer, you could get hurt badly in a river.

    - BONUS Random ARTICLE of the week PART 2: I thought this was common sense? Doesn’t everyone know you need to let a tattoo heal before doing anything?

    - BONUS Random ARTICLE of the week PART 3: His story is awfully suspect. Hard to say if he did or didn’t do anything wrong but I am leaning towards he did do something wrong.

    - BONUS Random ARTICLE of the week PART 4: This guy. SMH. Even his own family was against him on this one.

    - BONUS Random ARTICLE of the week PART 5: They are going to keep attacking. They need to be stopped. More and more attacks worldwide until something is done. It is a shame.

    - Apparently they FINALLY got it right. Wonder Woman is getting tremendous reviews by all critics everywhere. It is being touted as “The DC Movie that we’ve been waiting for” and the “best DC movie to date” which isn’t saying much since the rest have stunk up the place. Glad to hear this. It was originally trending towards an $80 million opening weekend but the strong reviews and word of mouth has changed that estimate and it is now leaning towards a $175 million opening weekend. WOW.

    - So Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson isn’t the box office draw we expected him to be as “Baywatch” BOMBED at the box office coming in 3rd place behind the new “Pirates of the Caribbean” film and “Guardians of the Galaxy: Volume 2”. It made $23 million which was a major disappointment.

    - Dearbhla Walsh, director of the Punisher series on Netflix inadvertently spilled the beans that the Punisher will stream on Netflix in November.

    - Caught up on Supergirl. It wasn’t as good a finale as Arrow but it was fine for what it was. It is a good show although I do need them to get rid of Jimmy/Guardian. He isn’t worth the screen time. It is a waste. They should just limit the heroes to the D.E.O. Sad to see Mon-El gone. I hope it is a temporary thing because he was liked by me. And it is so amazing that in 3 episodes of Supergirl, Superman is SO INFINITELY BETTER than the film version. It isn’t that hard Zack Snyder!!! They should just make Tyler Hoechlin the film version and fix everything.

    - So apparently the Flash’s season 4 villain will be DeVoe. He was name dropped by Savitar in the finale. His real name is Clifford DeVoe and he ISN’T a speedster which is a breath of fresh air. His evil name is “The Thinker” who uses science to keep up with the Flash.
