TGIF: The Greatest Professional Wrestling Match Of All Time

By Matt Dawgs Jun 15, 2018 - 2:07 PM print

T.G.I.F. with Matt Dawgs: #449

Good day to you all and welcome to We Want Insanity. I am your host for today, Matt Dawgs and this is my column. Today is the end of the work week and the time to look back at all the goings-on over the past seven days as I wrap it up with a bow and spout it out bit by bit. Buckle up. Enjoy the ride.

IMPORTANT MATT NOTE:: I am hoping that you readers have taken the time to lend a hand and donated to the JAIDAN STRONG cause for me. I’d really appreciate it if you did; as little as $5 can go a long way. If not, it isn’t a big deal but please at least SHARE THE LINK. I get that finances can be tough for some but taking the time to share a link via your social media doesn’t cost a dime. I’d appreciate it greatly as one of your friends or family members may be able to help out. Thanks.

MDJG NOTE: James Guttman is the Dad of Hi Blog! I'm Dad.

BONUS MATT NOTE: Just a heads up that even though this is a PPV weekend and what will be a noteworthy one, I will NOT be writing a column next week as I have a mini-stay-cation coming and therefore will not have time to write one. But you will absolutely get my feelings on Ronda Rousey vs. Nia Jax and the MITB winners the following week.

WWE NEWS AND NOTES:

- Weird opening to RAW with everyone from RAW in the MITB match in the ring on ladders. It made for a great visual but was just a stupid concept.

- WWE CREATIVE LICENSE: I love it when whatever they are hyping is “the most grueling match in WWE history”. Kurt Angle noted on RAW that MITB is the most grueling match in WWE history. Let’s see if that is his opinion come September when he is hyping Hell in the Cell or during the next Elimination Chamber match because I swore those matches were the last time they were hyped up.

- As I suspected, “Constable” Corbin sounds as stupid as I thought it would. Ugh. WWE and their ridiculous WWE-esque language. It is so incredibly frustrating.

- NOTE TO ASPIRING AND INDEPENDENT WRESTLERS: if you have long hair, don’t just shave it bald for no reason when you can draw money losing it in a match. It isn’t just for Mexican wrestling; You can do it in the U.S. and make money doing so. Baron Corbin apparently didn’t get that memo during his time in the Performance Center.

- Very important question and I feel like I ask it every single week. Why is Kurt Angle still General Manager? It’s not like he was doing such an exceptional job that he is invaluable. He f*cked up Ronda Rousey’s signing by spoiling the fact that Stephanie and HHH only hired her for revenge to then break her for embarrassing her at Wrestle Mania a few years back. Then he challenged her and HHH to a match at this year’s Mania where Stephanie was embarrassed again. Now she has hired Corbin to be her direct report. Just fire the f*cking guy. You have a huge address book of Hall of Famers and Legends who can be GM. For Christ’s sake, Mick Foley was fired for less!!!

- Kevin Owens seemed scared to climb the ladder last week during his match against Finn Balor showing a fear of heights. It was played up by commentators and after the match. So why in the world was Owens on top the ladder to start RAW with no issues and then again climbed the ladder to end RAW with no issues. Did he get therapy between last Monday and this Monday and was suddenly cured?

- Kudos to subtly playing into the Mixed Match Challenge by having Alexa Bliss, a HEEL, note that she thought Braun Strowman, a babyface, was going to win the MITB. I think there is money in them as a pair.

- Excellent four way with the women. That just leads me to believe that Jax was the problem with her match with Nattie from a few weeks back. Nattie was awesome in this as was Alexa Bliss, Ember Moon and Sasha Banks.

- I still hate the paring of Ziggler and McIntyre but I admit that their combination “Zig Zag/Claymore Kick” finisher is AWESOME visually.

- The “B” Team is fun and as I have noted, Axel and Dallas deserve something for all the sh*t they have been put through in the past few years. That being said, it is sh*t comedy and eventually it is going to die a painful death like their opponents on Monday, Rhyno and Slater. They were funny once too remember? Novelty comedy acts have no shelf life.

- I wonder if they are going to keep Wyatt and Dallas apart when they eventually go with The “B” Team vs. Wyatt and Hardy?

- Elias is Super Over as a heel and WWE really needs to run with Seth Rollins beating Lesnar for the title instead of Reigns. Rollins is the GUY right now. Strike while the iron is hot.

- For those keeping score, Nia Jax acted like a babyface this week. So the heel turn is gone now and she is back to being a face. Did someone realize that it was stupid for her to act heelish with no turn on top of it being so soon after she turned face?

- Nia tapping means she is winning on Sunday right? They wouldn’t make Jax tap on RAW and then again on PPV? Would they? Stephanie is interfering? Nattie turning? Those are the only scenarios I see. Ronda can’t win can she?

- Oh…P.S., Ronda losing, even by underhanded ways is so stupid right now but that is neither here nor there. Ronda honestly should have run through everyone like she did in UFC to build to either her vs. Asuka or her vs. Charlotte.

- That Big Show/Special Olympics video package was all sorts of great.

- Finally, after weeks of buildup, WWE does a decent angle to build Zayn vs. Lashley as the obstacle course followed by Zayn jumping him was fantastic.

- So Lana is officially no longer Russian? She has ZERO accent to start Smackdown. She didn’t even bother trying.

- Speaking of accents, Peyton Royce making fun of Becky Lynch for having an accent was SOLDI F*CKING GOLD. LOL.

- Is WWE trying to get over Bryan’s heel hook as a finisher? Why are they shying away from the Yes Lock or the Busaki Knee?

- Bryan vs. Shelton Benjamin was a solid match with a good amount of time given. Considering this was their first time ever working together, it was good stuff. Benjamin shouldn’t just be putting people over though; he should be placed in a solid feud.

- What a waste of Jerry Lawler to just have him do an interview so he could get a pop in Memphis.

- Samoa Joe is the best promo in WWE today. Bar none.

- It is believed that James Ellsworth has been offered a deal to return to WWE, possibly as soon as Sunday for the MITB PPV meaning that he will likely be assisting Carmella in her match against Asuka. Hence the visual of Asuka causing Carmella to tap out.

- It looks like WWE Hall of Famer Paul Ellering was RIGHT!!! Cause where the f*ck are The Authors of Pain? They’ve been AWOL for weeks now. For those who do not know, when Ellering managed the Road Warriors in the 1980’s, he MANAGED them. It wasn’t just a television thing as he booked their travel and did all the things a manager would do. Well apparently with the AOP, one of them has a VISA issue which is why they haven’t been on television lately. They are expected back soon.

- While on the subject of Ellering, on the NXT conference call before a Takeover event, Paul Levesque revealed that he was not included in the decision making to remove Ellering from the AOP presentation but that he is open to Ellering returning to NXT in a new role because he is valuable for the brand.

- Do not expect Charlotte to walk away with the MITB briefcase. She has been putting off breast replacement surgery since prior to Wrestlemania but will be getting it soon after the PPV. She ruptured one of her implants and has been working on it for months now. She is due back before Summerslam however.

- Ricochet was pulled from one of the NXT European Live Events earlier this week after tweaking his shoulder doing a dive to the outside of the ring. Triple H revealed that he will still participate at Takeover: Chicago and is fine. He was only pulled due to NXT not wanting him to injure himself further and rest up for Saturday.

- Rusev and Lana were robbed at their hotel in Memphis on Monday and claim housekeeping are the ones who did it. Rusev sent the following tweet out: “Thank you @sheratonhotels Memphis for ‘cleaning’ the room and stealing my wife camera and my money from my wallet”.

- Smackdown GM Paige followed up with a tweet of her own noting: “If you’re in the Memphis area don’t EVER stay at the @SheratonMemphis it’s literally the worst. Things stolen, bad customer service and room service takes two hours just for a salad and WE are the inconvenience. Ugh. The worst.”

- Mauro Ranallo will NOT be calling Takeover: Chicago tomorrow due to him having commitments for Showtime Boxing. Vic Joseph will be replacing him on commentary. No offense to Vic Joseph but I was looking forward to hearing Ranallo call Gargano vs. Ciampa after his selling of their last encounter.

- Noam Dar is due back soon as he has been medically cleared to return following knee surgery during the Cruiserweight Tournament heading into Wrestlemania in April.

- Lio Rush is COMING SOON.

- Alicia Fox was once again backstage at RAW this week but was not used.

- It is believed that CMLL’s Zeuxis has signed with WWE and she will be debuting at the Performance Center later this summer.

- Io Shirai’s last match for Stardom before beginning with WWE will take place on Tuesday at Korakuen Hall. She will then leave the following week to relocate to Orlando.

- As further evidence that Toni Storm is on her way to the WWE U.K. Division, Kagetsu won the World of Stardom title from Storm last weekend.

- The recently signed Steffanie Newell has been renamed. She is now known as Tegan Nox.

- WWE is interested in shaking things up in developmental and there have been talks about signing a bunch of high level independent talent as well as New Japan talent especially after “All In” selling out.

- Longtime Japanese Women’s star Meiko Satomura is expected to be participating in the Mae Young Classic in August Satomura is the founder of the Sendai Girls promotion in Japan and began wrestling at age 18. She has been working for 20 years now. It is not expected that she will be joining WWE

- John Cena continues to trek down Hollywood Road as he just scored another co-starring role in a major motion picture as he will star alongside action legend Jackie Chan in “Project X”. Originally the film was to co-star Sylvester Stallone who was forced to pull out due to a schedule conflict. In the film, Cena will play a former Marine who has to team up with Chan, a Chinese private security contractor to stop attackers from trying to steal oil from a Chinese refinery.

- Jeff Hardy pleaded guilty to DWI from his March 10th arrest and he will receive a 120 day suspended sentence and 120 days of community service as well as complete an assessment and treatment class and his driver’s license has been suspended.

- UFC President Dana White revealed inadvertently last weekend that WWE Universal Champion Brock Lesnar’s contract expires in August. That means unless a new deal is signed, Brock is likely dropping the Universal Title at Summerslam to the most likely candidate, Roman Reigns. Brock however in order to fight at the December UFC PPV will need to submit his name to USADA for drug testing by Saturday, June 30th. If he does not, he will not be able to fight in 2018.

- WWE officially recognized Brock Lesnar as the longest reigning WWE champion of the modern era on Tuesday as he surpassed CM Punk as he has held the title for a record 435 days. His last contractually obligated match/appearance is SummerSlam. Anything after that would be based on a new deal. And if you are wondering, the answer is YES, Brock Lesnar defending against Roman Reigns is still the planned main event for that show.

- Sinclair Broadcasting CEO Chris Ripley revealed this week that Ring of Honor plans on running Madison Square Garden in 2019 with the tentative date set to be Saturday April 6th which is Wrestlemania weekend and head to head with NXT Takeover Brooklyn. WWE spent the remainder of the week working overtime to try and prevent this from happening and block this show from taking place. The flip side is that MSG is super pissed off that WWE continues to run major events at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn instead of MSG in New York and all of the Wrestlemania events taking place next year are at Barclays including the Hall of Fame and NXT Takeover.

- Hulk Hogan in a recent interview from last week noted that things are moving “quite quickly” about a return to the WWE.

- As a further sign of WWE’s partnership with EVOLVE wrestling, NXT North American Champion Adam Cole will defend his title at the EVOLVE 107 show in Melrose Massachusetts on June 24th. His opponent will be WALTER whom is believed to be signed by WWE or close to being signed by WWE. His match will NOT be airing on the iPPV but it is still being debated on whether or not it will be released in other ways.

- Rey Mysterio spoke to ESPN last week and noted that he is in fact still negotiating with WWE and that nothing has been finalized as of yet. He said he is interested in returning to a part time schedule but physically he could only wrestle once or twice a week which would limit Live Events for him. It is believed by those within WWE that it is only a matter of time before Mysterio is signed.

- Mysterio’s son Dominick, who was used on WWE TV many moons ago in an angle where Eddie Guerrero was his father, is set to begin training under Lance Storm at the “Storm Wrestling Academy” in Calgary….Alberta Canada. He has spent the last 18 months being trained by Rey in California. So that is two pretty good people to learn to wrestle from.

- Look out for Stephanie McMahon on CBS’ “Undercover Boss” tonight. She will be in disguise as she watches aspiring wrestlers training with none of them being the wiser that she is Stephanie. There are pictures floating around of her in disguise and it is pretty convincing.

- WWE has added a new match to their “Hidden Gems” category. It is a “Deep South Wrestling” match. Deep South was the developmental territory run by Bill Demott which was replaced by Florida Championship Wrestling which was replaced by NXT. Anyway, the match is from September 3rd, 2006 and featured Cru Jones vs. KENNY OMEGA.

- History took place yesterday as the first EVER battle between The New Day (Xavier Woods/Big E./Kofi Kingston) vs. THE GOLDEN ELITE (IWGP Champion Kenny Omega & IWGP TAG TEAM CHAMPIONS The Young Bucks) took place…… 2018 ELECTRONIC GAMING EXPO in a battle of Street Fighter V in Los Angeles. WWE hyped the match on their You Tube channel and the match was won by….THE NEW DAY. I do not know if WWE is going to announce that but the CONTEST ITSELF was entertaining. Following the win, Kenny Omega challenged Xavier Woods to a best out of nine match challenge with the loser having to eat 3 habanero peppers. Omega won and Woods ate the peppers.

- The cover of WWE 2K18 is set to be revealed on Monday at 11:00 am ET followed by a Q&A with the cover superstar. I would be absolutely shocked if it was anyone but Ronda Rousey announced.

- Totally not sure how this slipped under my radar but apparently Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s “7 Bucks Entertainment” as casted John Cena as the LEAD in a ACTION FILM ROLE. That’s awesome. Johnson was originally set to star but couldn’t due to too many conflicts coming up so he casted Cena and will now executive produce.

- Speaking of the Rock, his “Fast & Furious” spin off with Jason Statham will be titled “Hobbs & Shaw”. I for one and super stoked about this.

- Also don’t expect him to wrestle or appear at Mania in April as he has a film titled “Red Notice” that is scheduled to start production in April.

- In what could become a big scandal story coming out of the CM Punk court case, Deadspin’s David Bixenspan IS REPORTING that one of the pre-trial motions by the plaintiff had successfully fought to keep from being discussed that Dr. Chris Amann was dating former WWE Diva Jillian Hall while she was employed with WWE and also had a sexual relationship with an independent female wrestler that he met at a tryout event for WWE. Both of these are a HUGE no-no in the medical profession and a breach of ethics by a doctor. Bixenspan reached out to Hall and she did in fact confirm that she had a sexual relationship with Amann at the time of her WWE employment. When reached for comment, WWE noted: “We were not aware of this. We are investigating the matter and will determine if any action is warranted.” Dr. Amann’s WWE contract ends in October.

Ring of Honor / New Japan / Lucha Underground / IMPACT WRESTLING / Independent / International News and Notes:

    - HISTORY was made on Saturday at the New Japan “Dominion” show as Kenny Omega became New Japan’s first ever Canadian IWGP Heavyweight Champion and the 66th IWGP Champion overall in the company’s history as he became the man to end Kazuchika Okada’s 2 year record-breaking title reign in what I strongly feel was the greatest match I have ever seen in my entire life and surpassing all 3 of Okada vs. Omega matches that have taken place prior to this. The story telling that these two men had was incredible starting all the way to match 1. For those who have not seen the 4 matches, you absolutely NEED to. Okada won the 1st match with two “Rainmakers” when Omega was unable to hit his finisher, the “One Winged Angel”. For those of you who do not follow New Japan or Omega, NO ONE in the company has kicked out of his finisher since he debuted in New Japan. It is the most protected finishing move in ALL of professional wrestling. The story of the match was that he could not nail Okada with it meanwhile Omega kicked out of Okada’s finisher. In the 2nd match, the match went to the first 60 minute draw in New Japan in 15 years. The match ended shortly after Omega FINALLY hit the “One Winged Angel” and Okada managed to get his foot on the rope before time shortly ran out after. The 3rd match was a non-title match in the G-1 tournament and saw Omega win cleanly in about 30 minutes with the “One Winged Angel” proving that he could beat Okada with his finisher. That lead to this match where it was announced that it would be 2 out of 3 falls with NO TIME LIMIT. Okada won the first fall with a flash pin out of nowhere. Here is where the psychology of Okada and Omega is far and away better than anyone else in the wrestling business today. Omega won the 2nd fall cleanly with the “One Winged Angel”. This is significant because had Omega won the 2nd fall another way, it would have predicted the finish because most fans would think that Omega would win the final fall with the “One Winged Angel” since he didn’t win with it. By winning fall 2 with it, it then planted a seed of doubt that Omega was winning. Also, since Okada didn’t win the first fall with his finish of the “Rainmaker”, people would think Okada is retaining the title with it since it wasn’t used as a fall. So when Omega hit back to back “One Winged Angels” in the 3rd fall, he won the match and the title in what was a masterpiece of a contest. The match was the 2nd longest match in the history of New Japan Pro Wrestling as they went 69 minutes and 49 seconds.

    - The post-match angle saw Omega’s best friends, The Young Bucks, who captured the IWGP Heavyweight Tag Team titles earlier in the show by defeating EVIL and Sanada, come out to ringside and reunite with Omega. They were his corner-men for ALL THREE of the previous matches but due to the dissension amongst the Bullet Club all perpetrated by Cody, they did not accompany him for this match and instead his was seconded by his tag team partner Kota Ibushi. Omega hugged both Young Bucks as well as Ibushi to a huge pop from the crowd. They are all united now and are known as “The Golden Elite” which immediately became the highest selling shirt in the HISTORY of the “Pro Wrestling Tees” website.

    - During the celebration and after Omega’s promo, Cody walked down the ramp and stared at the celebration but he did not enter the ring to congratulate his former friend Kenny Omega. Instead he turned around and left. This will lead to the San Francisco Cow Palace show on July 7th which it was announced that the main event will be Kenny Omega defending the IWGP Title against Cody.

    - The rest of the “Dominion” show was excellent from beginning to end including Super Junior’s winner Hiromu Takahashi defeating Will Ospreay to capture the IWGP Jr. Heavyweight Title in an incredible match that had it not been for Okada vs. Omega, would have stolen the show.

    - Despite it not being the “official” Intercontinental Title, Chris Jericho is claiming to be an 11 time Intercontinental champion after defeating Tetsuya Naito at Dominion to win the championship. Jericho continues to reinvent the wheel when it comes to his presentation, persona and style. He wrestled an absolutely different style then he did in the Omega match in New Japan at Wrestle Kingdom and if he continues to wrestle this style, he can easily add about 10 years to his wrestling career which at age 47 would be significant. It was a solid match and different than anything Naito has done in NJPW.

    - Michael Elgin surprisingly also captured GOLD when he defeated Taichi and Hirooki Goto to capture the NEVER Openweight Championship.

    - In a match featuring Legends of the wrestling business, the Bullet Club of Cody, Hangman Page and Marty Scurll beat Hiroshi Tanahashi, Jushin “Thunder” Liger and Rey Mysterio.

    - The Dominion show will air on AXS on Friday June 29th and Friday July 6th. It will air in two parts and will both be two hour specials. They do plan on airing Okada vs. Omega in its entirety.

    - AXS is also going to air a “Bullet Club is Fine” special on Saturday July 7th which will feature the Young Bucks and Cody as hosts of 8 hours of Bully Club matches from the last year.

    - Following his loss at “Dominion”, Will Ospreay revealed that he plans on taking some time to recover his body physically from all the wear and tear he has had in the past two years. He noted he still plans on wrestling this summer but he is going to cut back his bookings significantly.

    - Don Callis is now “All In” which officially confirms that “All In” will be streamed in some capacity. Also MJF and Madison Rayne defeated Flip Gordon & Brandi Rhodes. MJF and Rayne are now also “All In” meanwhile Flip Gordon is still trying to find a way onto the show.

    - Cody revealed that he will NOT be participating in the G-1 Tournament this year as he is working on a project (likely an acting gig) that will require him to be in the U.S. from Monday through Friday this summer.

    - Chris Jericho revealed that he will NOT be appearing on the Cow Palace or
All In shows as despite having creative freedom to do whatever he likes and not being under contract to WWE. Jericho said he hasn’t been offered enough to wrestle in the U.S. and that if it is less than six figures a show, he isn’t interested. He also thinks it would be a slap in the face of Vince McMahon wrestling on U.S. soil when it isn’t for WWE. He has no issues working overseas but U.S. is off limits and refuses to do so.

    - Congrats to Bad Luck Fale as he has lost 50 lbs. over the past few months.

    - In what will certainly be a HUGE story in 2019, Sinclair Broadcasting Group CEO Chris Ripley revealed that Ring of Honor will in fact run a show in Madison Square Garden as Sinclair plans to take advantage of the “wrestling boom” that is taking place citing the billion dollar deal WWE struck for television rights with NBC Universal and Fox.

    - As of right now, the planned date for ROH to run MSG is April 6th which is sheer genius if you ask me as that is Wrestlemania weekend in New York/New Jersey so it will absolutely increase their chances of selling out the building since the town will be packed with 60,000+ wrestling fans. Running on April 6th means they will be competing head to head with the NXT Takeover show running at the Barclay’s Center.

    - This could be a HUGE task for ROH to sell out unless the come out with a major main event or line-up or dream match because June 2nd’s taping at the Hammerstein was the first ROH show to not sell out the building since 2013.

    - AAA is planning on running Madison Square Garden on September 16th which is a Sunday and is also smart on their part because as I noted last week, WWE is running their “Hell in a Cell” PPV on this date meaning that WWE can’t refuse MSG from letting AAA run the building because WWE isn’t going to run a show in their place that date.

    - Shane “Hurricane” Helms will make his ROH debut this weekend and his debut will be against longtime friend Christopher Daniels. Surprisingly enough Daniels revealed on Twitter this week that despite knowing Helms for 19 years, they have never been in the ring together. Daniels and Kazarian will face Helms and Delirious.

    - Joey Janela is coming back with a live event on August 17th. This one will be titled “Lost In New York” and will take place at the Melrose Ballroom in Queens the Friday of “Summerslam “weekend.

    - Former WWE star Enzo Amore will be making his first post WWE Pro Wrestling appearance using the name “Real 1” as he will be appearing on the August 17th “House of Glory” show in Queens NY (Summerslam weekend). The show is promoted by former ROH/Impact star The Amazing Red. No role for “Real 1” has been announced yet other than his appearance.

    - MLW has officially announced the first 4 participants in the “Battle Riot” match on July 19th in Queens New York which I will in fact be attending. The “Battle Rumble” is a Royal Rumble style match which will feature 40 participants and the winner will receive a MLW title shot whenever and wherever they want. Participants enter every 60 seconds and you can eliminate someone not only by over the top rope but by pinfall or submission as well. The first four people announced are Johnny Mundo, ACH, Davey Boy Smith Jr. and Kevin Sullivan. Yes, THAT Kevin Sullivan. They also announced that Smith Jr. will team with Teddy Hart and will be seconded by Brian Pillman II to take on ACH and Rich Swann in a tag team match. I am with a “Hart Foundation 2.0” crew with Hart, Smith and Pillman.

    - Rumors are circulating that MLW has been approached about having the above mentioned show on July 19th air on either traditional PPV or iPPV. That’s awesome.

    - Zeda Zhang, who was just released from NXT last week, has already debuted for MLW.

    - Despite being on the “outs” with AAA, Alberto El Patron is claiming that he will be wrestling at Triple Mania and that he is retiring in 2019. There are still people who believe that he is angling for a WWE return soon.

    - Masked Republic is currently working on both a Lucha Libre video game which, with a good video game company, could be sh*tloads of fun if done right. They are also working on a limited edition series of Lucha Libre comic books based on Rey Mysterio, Konnan, Blue Demon Jr., Penta OM, Fenix and more. The first edition featuring Rey Mysterio debuts at the Sana Diego Comic Con on July 20th and Mysterio will be signing copies and promoting it there.

    - Former WCW World Champion David Arquette is currently in training at age 46 for a match at the annual “Gathering of the Juggalos” against Human Tornado in what will be one of Tornado’s final matches before retiring. I have no idea who booked this or came up with the idea but I am curiously interested in it. LOL.

    - Congrats to Jimmy Lloyd as he won this year’s CZW “Tournament of Death” defeating Rickey Shane Page in the finals.

    - The latest season of Lucha Underground debuted this week on El Rey Network.

    - Impact, in a move to help strengthen their deal with AAA, reached a television deal with Mexico and now airs there on Saturday Nights.

    - Eli Drake signed a short term extension to his contract. It now expires on July 31st. He is still negotiating with both WWE and Impact about a long term deal.

    - I still cannot believe that there is a team called “The Desi Hit Squad” that is working here when most people who work in creative know who the Hit Squad is. Mind blowing.

    - TREMENDOUS!!!.

    - Latest episode of BEING THE ELITE. It is stuff like this that ADDS to the stuff that goes on in the ring in New Japan that makes it the best wrestling product around today. Watch this and see how angles, especially Cody/Omega continue to build and tell a story. Also the tease for the Jericho Cruise as Chris Jericho makes his “Being the Elite” debut.

NEW JAPAN PRO WRESTLING “COW PALACE SHOW” is on Saturday, July 7th, 2018 from San Francisco California and the line-up is as follows:

  • IWGP HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP: Kenny Omega © vs. Cody
  • IWGP U.S. TITLE: “Switchblade” Jay White vs. Juice Robinson
  • Kazuchika Okada & Will Ospreay vs. Los Ingobernables de Japon (Tetsuya Naito & BUSHI
  • IWGP TAG TEAM TITLES: The Young Bucks © (Matt & Nick Jackson) vs. Los Ingobernables de Japon (EVIL & SANADA)
  • MMA News and Notes:

    - On July 5th in Las Vegas Nevada during International Fight Week, UFC will induct the first woman into the UFC Hall of Fame as Ronda Rousey has been chosen as the “Modern Era” fighter for this year’s induction. That should 100% solidify that Ronda is done with MMA for good and she is serious about her WWE career.

    - I don’t want to hear any complains about how Rousey’s career ended because regardless of that, anyone who believes she shouldn’t be in the Hall needs their brains examined. Rousey made women’s MMA. Not Gina Carano, not Cris “Cyborg”. Rousey did.

    - Rousey joins the other UFC Hall of Famers this year as Matt Serra joins the “Pioneer Wing” Art Davie and Bruce Connal join the “Contributors Wing” and the Dan Henderson vs. Mauricio “Shogun” Rua fight from UFC 139 will join the “Fight Wing” as well.

    - An MMA career may have ended on Saturday night. If it is not ended, it is for sure ended in the UFC as C.M. Punk fought in his 2nd career MMA fight and lost handedly to Mike Jackson. While I give Punk all the respect in the world for having the courage to not only quit a significantly high paying job and superstardom to go and attempt to switch professions to try MMA, then after being destroyed in his debut, to come back and try again, he now needs to call it a career. Punk had approximately 2 years in between MMA fights and Punk showed ZERO improvement from the 1st fight to the 2nd. He has no head movement, no striking skills and extremely limited Jiu-Jitsu and ground skills and was completely outclassed by a man with almost similar skill levels as himself. It was a sad sight to see. Sure you can make mention that Punk spent the better part of two weeks in a courtroom instead of training but by watching him on Saturday it became painfully obvious that those two weeks would not have made the slightest bit of difference. The skill level just wasn’t there and even UFC president Dana White noted: “Punk is the nicest guy in the world. He’s my friend and I like him a lot but he needs to call it a wrap. He can go fight again if he wants to but it won’t be here in UFC. Although Mike Jackson will fare no better in UFC as White noted that he is a joke and embarrassment and made no attempt to finish Punk when it was obvious that he could if he tried. He said he took everything about the fight as a joke including the buildup and the first itself and under no circumstances would he fight in UFC again. Not on TV shows or Dana White’s “Contender Series”. Mike Jackson was done.

    - Jackson defended himself to TMZ and told Dana White that he isn’t a showboat and wasn’t taunting C.M. Punk. He said that he didn’t want to injure Punk and while giving him credit for being tough and taking a beating, Punk should call it a career. He’s going to get injured if he continues on fighting.

    - Rashad Evans was completely destroyed in his first on Saturday. Despite his MMA pedigree, it is time for Evans to call it a career as well as he has not had an impressive performance in quite some time and continues to be on the downturn. He has lost his last 5 fights when UFC usually cuts people after 3 straight losses. He has lost 7 of his last 9 overall with his last win coming over Chael Sonnen in 2013!!!! Enough is enough. He is going to do some serious physical damage to himself if he continues at it as it is pretty clear that he cannot compete on an elite level anymore and hasn’t been the Evans that people remember in years.

    - Dana White said that Evans told him he was done following the event but Evans released a statement saying he was not retiring.

    - Colby Covington captured the Interim UFC Welterweight Championship defeating Rafael dos Anjos last weekend. Covington has promised that when he won, he was going to take the title to the White House and present it to President Donald Trump. Heel 101.

    - Curtis Blaydes is the real deal as a heavyweight. He had a solid showing against Alistair Overeem last weekend including surviving getting rocked in the 2nd round to not only overcome the onslaught but FINISH Overeem by ref stoppage as Overeem was out and a bloody mess in the 2rd.

    - Holly Holm once again raised her stock and defeated Megan Anderson fairly easily to a dominant decision. Not for nothing but she could be the spokesperson for the women’s division in UFC as she comes across as a white meat babyface in her promos and is well liked.

    - In the main event, Robert Whitaker beat an overweight Yoel Romero by split decision. The fight was non-title as Romero did not make weight and was forced to stop cutting by the Athletic Commission out of fear for his health. Romero is planning on suing the athletic commission for stopping him from cutting weight even though they feared for his health. He likely would have made weight had they not stopped him but suing them is one of the most outrageous things I have ever heard considering he showed out OVERWEIGHT!!! If you want to make weight for a fight Romero, here is a suggestion, make weight by the time weigh in begins!!! That is an easier way to do it then to try and cut weight an HOUR after official weighs in.

    - Whitaker broke his hand in the 3rd round and will be undergoing surgery soon to repair it.

    - Early estimates are showing that they may be one of the lowest drawing UFC PPV’s of all time as it is tracking towards 150,000 PPV buys.

    - UFC President Dana White revealed that he has not finalized anything regarding former UFC Heavyweight Champion Brock Lesnar however did in fact confirm that Lesnar’s current WWE contract expires in August. So the assumption is he will lose the WWE title at Summerslam. White did confirm that both Lesnar and Jon Jones are interested in fighting against one another and that is the fight that they are aiming for if they bring Lesnar back. In all honesty, that would likely be the biggest drawing fight in UFC history unless Conor McGregor vs. George St. Pierre can be signed.

    - Following her broken arm in January against Jessica-Rose Clark, Paige VanZant revealed that she has to undergo a 2nd surgery on her arm due to the 1st surgery being deemed a failure by her doctors. The broken bone in her arm has shown no sign of healing or progression. She noted that this was likely caused by her returning to training too soon and not allowing herself significant time to heal properly. Due to this, her 2nd surgery will be more extensive and she will have to let it heal properly before she attempts to train again.

    - UFC was marred in a bit of controversy this week as former NFL star Greg Hardy competed in Dana White’s “Contender Series” and knocked out Austen Lane in the first round. Hardy with the win earned himself a UFC contract. This ruffled some feathers because White is a big opponent of domestic violence and once noted that if you are a UFC fighter, UFC has a zero tolerance policy of domestic violence meaning you will be fired for it or if you have a domestic violence conviction, you would never be signed. . Hardy was arrested in 2014 for domestic violence and was suspended by the NFL over it with Deadspin releasing some pretty graphic photos of his then ex-girlfriend following the alleged incident. He was found guilty of the charged but appealed the case and on the appeal, the girlfriend at the time refused to testify and he was released. It is believed that Hardy reached a financial settlement with the woman which caused her to not testify. It is a fine line Dana is walking because since she didn’t testify and thus his appeal was successful, his conviction was overturned. Technically speaking, Dana White isn’t going against his word because he legally isn’t convicted of a crime even though he initially was. While he is now signed to a deal, White noted that Hardy is going to be allowed to fight for some smaller promotions while he gains some experience.

    - Dana White meeting Conor McGregor take 2 is scheduled for Monday. They were supposed to meet last month when UFC was in Liverpool but McGregor cancelled. The meeting on Monday will take place in New York as McGregor is in town since he had a court date in Brooklyn yesterday. At the court date, the judge noted that McGregor was to remain free until the next court date scheduled for July 26th. It is believed that a plea arrangement is being worked on and will be concluded then. This is all due to the incident in April at the Barclay’s Center in Brooklyn New York.

    - In the latest he said/she said drama, Dana White claims that George St. Pierre is retired. St. Pierre’s management team within minutes of White making that comment noted that he was not retired. LOL.

    - THIS LINK is for LIFE. Thank you soldiers. WELCOME HOME BLOG.

    - BONUS Random ARTICLE of the week: Yes he is an idiot. Yes he is an assh*le. Yes he is probably racist. Say what you want about him as a person and as a leader because let’s be honest, he’s horrible at it but this summit is a pretty big f*cking deal and if it causes North Korea to renounce their nukes than I am all for it.

    - BONUS Random ARTICLE of the week PART 1: I can’t imagine the pain they are going through right now. This is such a terrible tragedy. I’d need to be committed to a psych facility.

    - BONUS Random ARTICLE of the week PART 2: This article pisses me off for a myriad of reasons. I am 100% pissed at the guy for murdering four children, especially since two of them were his. I hate it when people get children involved in domestic disputes just to “hurt” the other person involved. It is sickening and those kids were innocent. But I honestly think, as much as I hate people hurting kids, I think I hate their mother more. How in the f*cking hell does your spouse/domestic partner come to your home to assault you and then you flee the home LEAVING THE KIDS BEHIND WITH THE PSYCHOPATH?!?!?!?! WTF? Either fight and kill the son of a bitch, die trying to fight/kill him or take your kids with you when you flee. Under no circumstances will option one be “leave my kids behind”.

    - BONUS Random ARTICLE of the week PART 3: All for equality and what not but how could the school and athletic commission not see anything wrong with this? It’s not like these girls were transitioning. Their testosterone levels are still more than the competition which puts everyone else at an unfair advantage. Plus one of them was just on the boys team a few months ago. WTF?

    - BONUS Random ARTICLE of the week PART 4: It’s sad to see so many people who claim to be family and friends taking advantage of poor Stan Lee. He is being used in a tug of war over the stuff he created and it is sad to see.

    - BONUS Random ARTICLE of the week PART 5: So this is a stupid idea. SMH. I hope to god it doesn’t pass.

    - BONUS Random ARTICLE of the week PART 6: Not for nothing but this seems like the kind of situation that would be ok for murder no? I mean I know I would have absolutely murdered her. Would you?

    - BONUS Random ARTICLE of the week PART 7: The dominos are starting to fall. People aren’t going to realize how big of a deal this is for a few more months.

    - BONUS Random ARTICLE of the week PART 8: This story is going to end very poorly as you can see the writing on the wall.

    - BONUS Random ARTICLE of the week PART 9: As I reported last week, this was expected. Tragic that it happened considering she doesn’t live in the area and didn’t realize it could have happened to her or her dogs. Sad.

    - BONUS Random ARTICLE of the week PART 10: I never thought that Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie would become so messy if they ever split. Now that they are split, it is getting BAD.

    - It did it. Avengers: Infinity War has passed $2 billion at the box office worldwide making it the 4th highest grossing film EVER.

    - There are more and more rumors floating around that are pointing to a time jump between the events that ended Infinity War to the events that are set to take place next year in Avengers 4. No word on how long but definitely more than a year.

    - DC Entertainment President and Chief Creative Officer Geoff Johns is stepping down from both roles in the company to launch his own production company titled “Mad Ghost Productions” where he will not only run but be a writer of screenplays for the company. He has also officially signed on to pen the script for DC’s big screen adaptation of “Green Lantern Corps”. In the announcement that he was hired for the screenplay, he revealed that the film will feature both Hal Jordan and John Stewart who are arguably the most famous Green Lantern’s in the DCEU. Johns was one of the most successful comic book writers within DC before he took over the role of DC Entertainment President including writing one of the most successful Green Lantern comic series and helping expand the Lantern universe for over 9 years. He was also instrumental in building the “Arrow-Verse” on the CW as he helped big time in adapting the Flash to television and assisting in the launch of both Supergirl and Black Lightning.

    - Deadline is reporting that Matt Reeves “The Batman” will in fact be a reboot of the franchise and not be linear with BvS, Justice League, Suicide Squad, etc. Instead it will be a new take on the character and will NOT star Ben Affleck in the titular role.

    - So the cast of former WB show “One Tree Hill” are all currently gathered in Louisiana for some sort of project to be revealed in December. Several of the cast members all posted pics on their social media with the hashtag #Christmas2018 but they have all since been deleted. I was super hyped for this until yesterday when I found out that they are filming a LIFETIME Network film for Christmas that has nothing to do with OTH.

    - Finished season one of “Brooklyn Nine Nine”. HILARIOUS. I cannot wait to get caught up. Also I read up on the cast. Totally just found out that the actress who plays Gina the secretary is married to Jordan Peele and the actress that plays Amy Santiago is married to actor David Fumero who played the crooked Federal Attorney the last few seasons on Starz “Power”. Good stuff.

    - I read yesterday that “The Jerry Springer Show” has ceased production and no new episodes were being filmed for syndication. I was shocked by this because I had no idea that Jerry Springer was producing new content. I thought they were cancelled YEARS ago.
