T.G.I.F. with Matt Dawgs: #400

Good day to you all and welcome to We Want Insanity. I am your host for today, Matt Dawgs and this is my column. Today is the end of the work week and the time to look back at all the goings-on over the past seven days as I wrap it up with a bow and spout it out bit by bit. Buckle up. Enjoy the ride.

MATT NOTE: #400!! Another milestone reached for me here at We Want Insanity. Thank you all for reading this weekly and enjoying whatever entertainment, news or information that I have provided you over the years. Enjoy.

BONUS MATT NOTE: Apologies for my absence last week as my wife’s grandmother passed away and we were busy running around. I may have some issues in the near future regarding the column and getting it out in time as I begin a new job on Monday with new responsibilities. But I will keep you all posted on that as the time comes.

PS – R.I.P. to actor Adam West a.k.a. Batman as he passed away earlier this week at age 88.

- RAW was another ho-hum show that was slammed in the ratings by the NBA finals. The only bright spot was the Samoa Joe/Brock Lesnar confrontation that was fan-f*cking-tastic. I really hope WWE keeps Joe in the main event mix and wish this wasn’t going to be a throwaway one off. WWE changed plans when Goldberg got the reaction he did upon his return to face Brock. So doing something similar with Joe would be GOLD. I am not saying having Joe win the title from Brock but don’t squash him and don’t let it be a one off match. Turn it into a feud. Sure WWE has plans for Braun Strowman to face Brock at Summerslam but I am ok if they hold off on that and pivot to Joe.

- Everything else was paint by numbers for them as nothing really moves forward and the rest of the feuds were just in a holding pattern.

- Smackdown wasn’t much better than Raw and that is amazing because it was the go-home show for the MITB PPV.

- While still obviously not where he should be in the ring, Jinder Mahal is really stepping nicely into his role as the top heel. He is carrying himself like a legit heel champion should and his promos are solid. He just needs to keep improving his ring work.

- The are ruining Shinsuke Nakamura and I am not liking it.

- Kurt Angle is likely going to return to the ring at Summerslam against HHH. While I know they have had excellent chemistry in the past and Angle is absolutely going to turn it up for his WWE in-ring return, why in the world do all of the main event level stars returning have to go through HHH?!?!?!? Brock wrestled him at Mania. Sting wrestled him at Mania. I am ok with Angle facing someone else.

- Matt and Jeff Hardy did an interview on the WWE Network and they addressed the “Broken” gimmick. Matt noted that he can’t talk much about it due to legal reasons but he fully expects it to debut on WWE TV sometime in the future. He also noted that he is fully aware that Jeff is going to embark on a solo career while back in the WWE.

- PS – it was the most watched WWE show of the week.

- As witnessed on Raw, Emma has returned from her injury. Her former boyfriend Zack Ryder has also been medically cleared to return and will be in action soon. He is being paired back with Mojo Rawley in the tag team division. Being that they won a title shot when he was injured in December, I expect them to be thrown back into that mix.

- Speaking of returning from injury, despite WWE informing us that Braun Strowman would be out for 6 – 8 months, he will be returning at “Great Balls of Fire”. With the intent of having Brock Lesnar vs. Braun Strowman at Summerslam, I fully expect Braun to be involved in the finish thus giving Samoa Joe a “way out” of losing clean or beating Brock. That way by having a schmozz, you could always come back to Brock vs. Joe down the road.

- Rusev has also been cleared by the WWE medical staff following his shoulder surgery in March and should be back soon. Considering he was supposed to get a WWE Title shot at Money in the Bank this Sunday and if he didn’t, was supposed to face off with Shane McMahon on Smackdown and he didn’t do that either, I am not sure what the plans are for him. They could still insert him in the main event picture since he does have a history with WWE Champion Jinder Mahal.

- There was a terrible rumor circulating on Wednesday that WWE Hall of Famer and father to Randy Orton, “Cowboy” Bob Orton had passed away. Not only is this rumor false but Bob is actually expected to appear at Money in the Bank on Sunday and be involved in the main event match somehow.

- The reason that Austin Aries did NOT capture the WWE Cruiserweight Title from Neville is because he is now out with an injury. The original plan was for him to dethrone Neville however he has been suffering from both neck and knee problems so WWE decided to keep the title on Neville and Aries is out getting rest trying to rehab it.

- WWE Superstar Paige has begun working out and should be cleared to return to contact action soon. There is still no word however if WWE has any intent on bringing her back or if she even wants to come back to WWE.

- Dash Wilder has also been cleared from his jaw injury and The Revival are expected back on WWE Live Events this weekend.

- John Cena upon his return from his hiatus will be a “free agent”. In WWE speak, that means he will be able to float across both Raw and Smackdown as he pleases. I am also 100% sure that this has ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with Raw’s ratings hitting record lows. WWE’s logic behind the free agency is that John declared himself one during the WWE “Superstar Shakeup” in April during his absence. Cena’s return will be on the July 4th episode of Smackdown Live.

- WWE Hall of Famer Jim Ross is both publically and privately pushing to get the opportunity to call the Brock Lesnar vs. Samoa Joe match at “Great Balls of Fire”.

- Scary moment for Mark Andrews as he suffered a neck injury at an NXT live event last week in the U.K. He was stretchered out of the ring and taken to a local hospital but he is now ok. He was diagnosed with a bruised neck.

- On the same show above, Ruby Riot got busted open the hard way during her match with Asuka and the match had to be stopped. Riot needed stitches but is now fine.

- The latest names for the NXT “Mae Young Classic” are:

  • Bianca Blair
  • Zhao Xia
  • Mary Kate formerly known as Rosie Lottalove/Andrea of Impact
  • Danielle Kamela
  • Julia Ho
  • Kimberly Frankele a.k.a. Kimber Lee
  • Lacey Evans
  • Victoria Gonzalez daughter of famous Texas Trainer Rudy Boy Gonzalez
  • Sarah Logan a.k.a. Crazy Mary Dobson
  • Taynaro Melo
  • - WWE is still looking to bring in Toni Storm and Tessa Blanchard for the

    - WWE is still interested in Ricochet joining the promotion however he is unable to do so until 6 months after his final appearance on Lucha Underground television as Prince Puma. Problem is, since Lucha Underground’s current season had a mid-season delay, he still has appearances upcoming meaning he wouldn’t be able to come to WWE until 2018 the earliest.

    - In what I believe is completely connected to her surprise marriage to WWE Superstar Dean Ambrose earlier this year, Renee Young and Ambrose will NOT be on the upcoming season of Total Divas. That is disappointing as they were a highlight of the show last season. Replacing Young and Ambrose in the cast will be Nia Jax and Alexa Bliss.

    - For obvious reasons, Eva Marie will also NOT be returning to Total Divas next season. This will mark the first season she isn’t on the show.

    - If you have not listened to Chris Jericho’s Podcast this week with the Big Show, DO SO. He goes IN on WWE creative and noted that he absolutely HATES working television due to the ridiculous stuff that is done. This is NOT going to go well for him.

    - In a story that is getting some mainstream publicity and NOT in a good way, Bray Wyatt is in the midst of a divorce from his wife/mother of his 2 children due to having an affair with WWE ring announcer Jojo Offerman.

    - Best wishes to WWE Hall of Famer Harley Race. He suffered a severe fall in his home two weeks ago and broke his hip and both of his legs. He is recovering following multiple surgeries. At his age, an injury like this is severe.

    - Happy 40th birthday to the “Phenomenal” A.J. Styles. He turned 40 last week.

    - Happy 46th birthday to WWE Superstar Mark Henry.

    - Welcome to the world Wolfgang Xander Hardy, 2nd son of WWE Superstar Matt Hardy and his wife Reby Hardy as he was born last week. He joins his sibling Maxel a.k.a. King Maxel in the Hardy home.

    - Congrats to Curt Hawkins and his wife as she gave birth to their daughter earlier this week.

    - Chris Jericho’s band Fozzy announced tour dates for October and November meaning that he will not be around for Survivor Series. I assume he will not come back until AFTER that tour meaning he won’t be returning this summer.

WWE MONEY IN THE BANK PPV is on Sunday, June 18th, 2017 from St. Louis Missouri and the line-up is as follows:

  • WWE TITLE: Jinder Mahal © w/The Singh Brothers vs. Randy Orton
  • MONEY IN THE BANK MATCH: A.J. Styles vs. Baron Corbin vs. Sami Zayn vs. Dolph Ziggler vs. Kevin Owens vs. Shinsuke Nakamura
  • SMACKDOWN WOMEN’S MONEY IN THE BANK MATCH: Charlotte vs. Becky Lynch vs. Natalya vs. Carmella vs. Tamina
  • WWE SMACKDOWN TAG TEAM TITLES: The Usos © vs. The New Day
  • WWE GREAT BALLS OF FIRE PPV is on Sunday, July 9th, 2017 from Dallas Texas and the line-up is as follows:

  • WWE UNIVERSAL TITLE: Brock Lesnar © w/Paul Heyman vs. Samoa Joe

    - Impact will be running their first live event in a long time as they are running a minor league baseball stadium show on August 5th in Staten Island New York.

    - Impact absolutely needs to leave the Impact Zone. Yes, I get that it is economical to run there and tape back to back shows. The India shows are a perfect example of this. So are the U.K. shows they used to run. They look so much more professional and “major league” than running at Universal Studios.

    - With both Josh Matthews and Jeremy Borash wrestling on the PPV, the Slammiversary PPV will be called by Don West who is returning for one night only and Robert Flores. Flores comes from ESPN and has been a huge wrestling fan. He was set to be the new host of Ric Flair’s podcast upon the return until Flair decided not to do it anymore.

IMPACT’S SLAMMIVERSARY PPV is on Sunday, July 2nd, 2017 from Orlando Florida and the line-up is as follows:

  • UNIFICATION OF IMPACT TITLE WITH GFW TITLE: Bobby Lashley © vs. Alberto El Patron ©
  • Jeremy Borash & Joseph Park vs. Josh Matthews & “Big Poppa Pump” Scott Steiner
  • FULL METAL MAYHEM MATCH: Eddie Edwards & Alisha Edwards vs. Davey Richards & Angelina Love
  • STRAP MATCH: Ethan Carter III vs. “Cowboy” James Storm
  • 2 OUT OF 3 FALLS X-DIVISION TITLE: Sonjay Dutt © vs. Low-Ki

Ring of Honor / Lucha Underground / Independent / International News and Notes:

    - How do you top a 6 Star match? Most people would say “You don’t”. But apparently Kazuchika Okada and Kenny Omega didn’t get that memo because according to sources, their PPV match at the New Japan Dominion show DID. DAVE MELZTER gave the match 6¼ stars. They went to a 60 minute draw and had a completely different style of match than they did at the Tokyo Dome in January. The drama built throughout the match and New Japan has not had a 60 minute title match draw since 2005. So the crowd was all into it for the full length of the match including the opposite of the last match with Okada NOT being able to beat Omega with the “Rainmaker” while Omega still couldn’t hit Okada with the “One Winged Angel”. Then, close to the end of the match, Omega FINALLY hit his finisher and the crowd legit bought it as the finish but Okada got his foot on the rope. I have not seen the match yet but it is going to air on AXS on Friday, June 30th and I will either catch it then or try to find it online as I’d like to hear both sets of English commentary with Don Callis and Kevin Kelly doing the original PPV feed as well as Jim Ross and Josh Barnett doing the AXS feed. I heard from those who’ve seen it that Callis is exceptional.

    - In a good political answer and thus not burning any bridges, Cody was asked via his Twitter if he missed WWE despite being held back. He replied: “No. I don’t miss it. I miss my homies a bit. But if anybody was holding me back, it was me. WWE Put me on the map and in the game. Forever grateful.”

    - Following the Dominion show in Tokyo, Nick Jackson’s bag was stolen from a restaurant. He lost $2,000 and his passport and his car keys. Thankfully he was able to get a new temporary passport in time for his flight home to the U.S.

    - Even though his contract expires at the end of June, Ring of Honor officials are confident that they are going to sign Dalton Castle to a new deal. WWE has expressed interest in signing Castle for NXT however it does not appear that he is leaving ROH at this time.

    - Congrats to former WWE Star and current Lucha Underground wrestler Johnny “Nitro” Mundo and Tara Valkyrie of Lucha Underground as they announced their engagement earlier this week.

    - Despite agreeing to buy the rights to the NWA name, Billy Corgan is still NOT officially the owner of the name as the funds have not changed hands yet. No word on what exactly is holding up the deal.

    - Matt Riddle is getting a New Japan tryout at a Revolution Pro against Tomohiro Ishii. He was given off from working any WWN shows that weekend despite having a contract with WWN because he will likely tear the house down with Ishii and get a New Japan offer. Due to WWN’s relationship with WWE, this may expedite WWE making Riddle an offer as they certainly do not want him going to New Japan.

    - Lucha Underground’s P.J. Black (formerly known as Justin Gabriel in WWE) had both his ankles broken back in October following a base jumping accident in South Africa. After a several month recovery, he returned to wrestling action a few weeks back. Well he will now be out of action again after suffering a broken leg, a broken hand and had one of his fingers amputated following....drum roll please....a base jumping accident in South Africa. SMH.

RING OF HONOR “Best of the Best” PPV is on Friday, June 23rd, 2017 from Lowell Massachusetts and the line-up is as follows:

  • ROH TITLE: Christopher Daniels © vs. Cody
  • ROH TAG TEAM TITLES: The Young Bucks (Matt & Nick Jackson) © vs. War Machine (Hanson & Rowe)
  • ROH TV TITLE: Kushida © vs. Marty Scurll
  • ROH TRIO TITLES: The Briscoes (Mark & Jay) & Bully Ray © vs. Dalton Castle & The Boys
  • LOSERS MUST BREAK UP MATCH: The Rebellion (Caprice Coleman/Kenny King/Rhett Titus/ Shane Taylor) vs. Search & Destroy (Chris Sabin/Alex Shelly/Jay White/Jonathan Gresham)
  • Jay Lethal vs. Silas Young
  • Ultimo Guerrego & El Terrible vs. Matt Taven & Vinny Marseglia
  • STRAP MATCH: Frankie Kazarian vs. Hangman Page
  • MMA News and Notes:

    - Well it looks like the impossible has become possible. Mayweather Promotions has put in a request for the MGM Grand in Las Vegas for August 26th. Floyd and Conor then both confirmed that the fight is on. It will be fought at 154 lbs with 10 oz gloves and will be a 12 round fight. The entire undercard will be strictly boxing only and will be decided on by Mayweather promotions. Neither man has applied for their boxing license yet but the commission has publicly noted that they will likely be approved. So it is ON!!!

    - Just 4 short years ago, Conor McGregor was cashing a welfare check for $235. Now, according to Dana White, he expects McGregor to make upwards of $100 million for the fight when it is all said and done.

    - McGregor did tell Dana White that he wants to get a UFC fight on the books before the end of the year. My assumption is that he will be on the December year-end PPV barring injury.

    - Mauro Ranallo will be calling play by play for Mayweather vs. McGregor.

    - UFC Hall of Famer Matt Hughes was severely injured earlier this morning in an accident when his truck was hit by a moving train. He was airlifted to a local medical facility and has some injuries to his brain. No update on how bad a shape he is in but I can imagine it is NOT good.

    - Mark Hunt seems like an ageless warrior. He has knocked out several people over the past few years while losing to those fighters who either were popped for PEDs following his fight or shortly after. Despite his 43 years of age, he continues to fight. This time, he was met by a man with as much, if not more, knockout power than him in Derrick Lewis. Lewis was on a 6 fight winning streak and has shown to possibly have more KO power than Hunt. Noticed I used the phrase “was on a 6 fight winning streak”. That is because last weekend Lewis was legit knocked into retirement by Hunt who defeated him by KO. Following the fight, Lewis announced his retirement from MMA citing his impending nuptials and not wanting to put his family though all the training camps and being away from home again. A win would have likely made Lewis #1 contender to the Heavyweight title due to the winning streak.

    - UFC Middleweight Champion Michael Bisping noted earlier this week that he plans on fighting twice more and then retiring from MMA. He wants George St. Pierre in November and then hopes to have a retirement fight in England in 2018.

    - Jose Aldo’s trainer is saying that Aldo went into UFC 212 where he was knocked out by Max Holloway, with a major leg injury. This is a very distinct possibility as Aldo did not throw ANY leg kicks at all in the fight and that is one of his “go to” offensive maneuvers.

    - Holly Holm vs. Bethe Correia headline a UFC Fight Pass show tomorrow from Singapore. Should Holm lose, UFC would almost certainly have to cut her from the promotion as it would be her 4th consecutive loss after defeating Ronda Rousey in November 2015.

    - Condolences to Jon Jones and his family as Jon’s mother Camille passed away last week due to complications from diabetes.

    - And showing that despite not liking Jon Jones personally, Daniel Cormier expressed his condolences to Jones and his brothers with the following tweet: "In our community the mother is the backbone. @JonnyBones, Arthur, Chandler and Mr. Jones I am sorry for ur loss. RIP Mrs. Camille. Prayers"

    - Canadian Olympian Arjan Bhullar makes his UFC debut on September 9th in Edmonton. He weighs 265 lbs. and trains with AKA in San Jose with both Cain Velasquez and Daniel Cormier. He is 6 – 0 in MMA.

    - Urijah Faber noted that he is under the impression that Sage Northcutt is going to be joining Team Alpha Male soon.

    - Bellator continues to try to make a run against UFC as they have hired both Mauro Ranallo and Mike Goldberg as announcers starting with the Madison Square Garden PPV of Chael Sonnen vs. Wanderlei Silva. Being that both are play by play guys, they will NOT be calling fights together but instead will be working with Jimmy Smith.

    - Sean Grande, the former play by play man for Bellator is no longer with the promotion. Don’t feel bad for Grande though since he still has his job as the play by play man for the Boston Celtics NBA basketball team. The decision to leave was his own as he noted the travel was too much as he already had to travel with the Celtics so adding 16 – 24 Bellator shows per year, two thirds of which were during the NBA season was too much for him. Plus he has a 5 year old son at home that he missed.

    - UFC Color Commentator Joe Rogan issued his congrats to Goldberg via his twitter: “Congratulations to my great friend and longtime partner @goldieontv! I miss working with you, brother! I'm sure you're going to love working at @bellatormma”

    - Bellator is still working on signing Chuck Liddell. If/when they do sign him; the goal is to coax Tito Ortiz out of retirement to fight him. Ortiz however has publically stated that he has no interest in fighting and that his neck is still severely injured and requires surgery.

UFC 213 is on Saturday, July 8th, 2017 from Las Vegas Nevada and the line-up is as follows:

  • UFC WOMEN’S BANTAMWEIGHT TITLE: Amanda Nunes © vs. Valentina Shevchenko
  • INTERIM UFC MIDDLEWEIGHT TITLE: Yoel Romero vs. Robert Whitaker
  • Robbie Lawler vs. Donald Cerrone
  • Fabricio Werdum vs. Alistair Overeem
  • Anthony Pettis vs. Jim Miller
  • UFC 214 is on Saturday, July 29th, 2017 from Anaheim California and the line-up is as follows:

  • UFC LIGHT HEAVYWEIGHT TITLE: Daniel Cormier © vs. Jon Jones
  • Jim Manuwa vs. Volkan Oezdemir
  • Chan Sung Jung a.k.a The Korean Zombie vs. Ricardo Lamas
  • Renan Barao vs. Aljamain Sterling
  • Sage Northcutt vs. Claudio Puelles
  • Cris “Cyborg” Justino vs. TBD

    - Former WWE Star Shad Gaspard of Cryme Tyme has been cast in Marvel’s ”Black Panther”.

    - The latest set photos for Justice League has shown that The Hall of Justice will be introduced.

    - Despite only have one film left on his Marvel contract which was set to expire with Avengers: Infinity War, Chris Evans a.k.a. Captain America has signed an extension and till be in Avengers 4.

    - Benedict Cumberbach is in Atlanta and set to begin filming Dr. Strange’s scenes in Avengers: Infinity War. An interesting note is that Walking Dead actress Danai Gurira (Michonne from TWD) was spotted on set this week meaning her character Okoya from Black Panther will be in the film as well.

    - Cameos everywhere. Actress Lucy Liu was spotted on the set of season 2 of Luke Cage.

    - In a shake-up by Fox, Brian Singer will NOT be directing the next X-Men movie. Instead, Executive producer Simon Kinberg will be stepping into the director’s chair for the first time. They have also confirmed that the film will in fact be “The Dark Phoenix” saga.

    - Actress Michelle Monaghan is confirmed to be reprising her role as Ethan Hunt’s wife for Mission Impossible 6. She was last seen in a cameo at the end of Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol and was the co-star of Mission Impossible 3.

    - Universal Pictures is apparently discussing their future of the “Dark Universe” film franchise that they were planning after Tom Cruise’s “The Mummy” was a major flop at the box office. Apparently Cruise’s film was set to introduce the world to “monsters” as Johnny Depp was set to star in the Invisible Man, Javier Bardam as Frankenstein’s Monster, Russell Crowe was introduced in the Mummy with Cruise as Dr. Jekell, etc.
