TGIF: More of Ranallo, RIP Chandler Biggins, and More

By Matt Dawgs Jun 23, 2017 - 1:40 PM print

T.G.I.F. with Matt Dawgs: #401

Good day to you all and welcome to We Want Insanity. I am your host for today, Matt Dawgs and this is my column. Today is the end of the work week and the time to look back at all the goings-on over the past seven days as I wrap it up with a bow and spout it out bit by bit. Buckle up. Enjoy the ride.

MATT NOTE: R.I.P. to Prodigy of the famous hip hop group Mobb Deep as he passed away at age 42 earlier this week. Some of you younger folks reading have no idea who he was but Mobb Deep’s single “Quiet Storm” is one of the most famous hip hop songs of all time.

WWE NEWS AND NOTES:

- So in a really weird continuation of the story, the Mauro Ranallo situation continued yesterday with him revealing that despite being let go from Smackdown and his WWE contract scheduled to end in August, he will be the new play by play person for NXT beginning tonight in Orlando at the TV tapings. Ranallo noted: “WWE and I mutually agreed to end my responsibilities on SmackDown having nothing to do with rumors about disputes. As I remained under contract with WWE, we discussed a variety of options. Despite originally agreeing to part ways, there was always a desire to continue working together. We have come to terms on a new agreement that benefits both WWE and me, and I am thrilled to announce I will now be part of the NXT broadcasting team.” This is a fairly big coup for WWE as Ranallo has been picking up a lot of big jobs including being announced as Bellator’s play-by-play man for tomorrow’s PPV event from Madison Square Garden as well as being named lead commentator by Showtime for the Floyd Mayweather vs. Conor McGregor fight in August.

- We have some new Money in the Bank briefcase holders with Baron Corbin holding the Smackdown WWE Title briefcase and Carmella holding the Smackdown Women’s briefcase. A lot of people complained about the women’s booking but I am 100% on board with it. It was an angle used to build heat and made sense. As for Corbin, he obviously wasn’t my first choice but I get it. WWE is big on him and he is decent in the ring and learning on the job. I absolutely see the potential in him. He isn’t where they want him yet but he can get there with patience.

- The Men’s MITB match was fantastic; from the booking to the action to the spots to the finish. I am ok with Corbin winning cause in all honesty; it always works better with a heel winning. Unless your are Rob Van Dam and you pick your cash in date in advance. I wasn’t ok with Nakamura being taken out so early but when he came back later in the match and showed a lot of Nakamura New Japan flashes, I was fine with it. This was the best he has looked since coming to the main roster. Also, the Nakamura/A.J. stuff was amazing and they NEED to book them at either Summerslam or better yet Mania.

- Kevin Owens was injured during the MITB match hurting his knee on a ladder spot. He was helped to the back following the match and was severely limping backstage and at the Live Event on Monday. He did manage to wrestle on Smackdown Live but was still limping backstage although not as severely as Sunday.

- The Mike Bennett Kanellis debut with his returning wife Maria was SOLID GOLD. I am all in on him living off of his wife’s fame and fortune. Great booking idea.

- The women’s MITB match was solid and everyone involved worked hard. They should absolutely be proud of themselves. I am also ok with them doing it again next week on Smackdown. My only issue is that Carmella NEEDS to win. You can’t have her lose it. You need her to have some sort of legitimacy.

- Daniel Bryan also revealed that James Ellsworth will be banned from ringside for the rematch.

- While on the subject of Bryan, he did an interview with Sports Illustrated earlier this week and was specifically asked about a possible return to wrestling in which he replied: “I am working on it.”

- RAW wasn’t bad this week. Yes we did have some more of the same with the continuation of the Hardy’s chasing Sheamus and Cesaro but we also had some good things as well.

- The return of Braun Strowman was awesome and did you listen to the pop he got when he came out the ambulance? He is SUPER OVER. I am telling you, WWE has lightning in a bottle with him.

- Cass’s turn was also well done but I felt like they should have done a bit more with the beatdown. Enzo should have been stretchered out. Cass did cut a good promo though and Enzo showed great emotion in his disappointment and sadness. I enjoyed it.

- Speaking of, poor Enzo. Enzo is now going to = Santino 2017. A shame because he is super gifted verbally but he just cannot hold down his end in the ring.

- Can anyone tell me why Corey Graves made the Cass reveal and not Kurt Angle?

- And why was Big Show angry that Angle insinuated that he was the one who attacked Cass? Wasn’t there a time last year where Big Show literally turned face-heel-face-heel-face-heel-face on consecutive weeks on television? Am I the only one who remembers this?

- Finn Balor is turning heel. You can tell by his work and his aggressive streak. It is coming. I personally cannot wait for it. Reunite him with Gallows and Anderson!!!

- Is it wrong that I don’t give two sh*ts about Seth Rollins or Bray Wyatt? By the way, Bray Wyatt still talking about being a God and being the world eater yet still has not won any of his feuds. SMH. You gotta let him win in order to get over. He has to follow through on his threats instead of losing all of the time.

- Samoa Joe is gaining traction. The crowd is popping for him big time. I hope they keep him elevated and don’t have him get squashed by Brock.

- Extremely disappointed in the “break up” of Miz and Maryse as a package. They are extremely awesome together however WWE wants Miz in a group with Bo Dallas and Curtis Axel. The idea is that they do not want 2 “men and women” duos acting as the “first couple” of WWE with the debut of Maria and Mike Kanellis despite them being on different brands. Maryse is supposed to be removed from TV for the immediate future.

- Mike and Maria did appear in front of the Smackdown crowd this week in a dark segment.

- That is a big up for both Dallas and Axel but a downgrade for Miz. Hopefully he can elevate them though. I still would have put Dallas with Wyatt as I think that would be a better fit.

- How does this Goldust vs. R-Truth feud work? Goldust attacked Truth and broke up the team then neither man has made an in-person appearance since the split. SMH. Yes, I know they are supposed to be on television next week to continue this storyline but it has been over a month since the split took place.

- Was that am American Alpha sighting I saw on Smackdown this week? Wowsers. Good for them. It is such a shame that WWE continually misuses them; especially due to their lack of tag teams.

- I really liked the fact that Smackdown had a Randy Orton interview where as a babyface he said he can respect the “numbers game” that Jinder Mahal was playing with the Singh Brothers because he once had Evolution and Legacy. That was a nice touch because most babyfaces would be scripted to complain about the disadvantage when in fact Orton is praising it because he used to do it himself.

- CHARLOTTE TO NATALYA: “I am going to make you look like Ellsworth.” literally the very next line spoken in that promo came from TAMINA TO CHARLOTTE: “I am going to make you look like Ellsworth.” HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!! Great comeback.

- Despite being a “free agent”, John Cena is booked for all Smackdown television shows from July 4th onward. He is right back into the mix of WWE as following his return on July 4th, he will fly to Australia for a speaking/promotional tour before returning for the July 11th Smackdown. I believe the only reason they said he was a free agent was in the event that they need a ratings boost for RAW, they can just throw him on the show with no notice to get viewership without having to explain why he is there.

- Seth Rollins was named as the cover guy for the new WWE 2K18 videogame. I am amazed that they went with Rollins over Roman Reigns considering Reigns hasn’t been on a cover. But I guess they wanted to go with a babyface that the crowd supports instead of one the crowd doesn’t. Why they didn’t choose A.J. Styles then in beyond me. I would have went with Angle on the cover and have him as the legend of the game. Makes the most sense and odds are that Angle is going to be featured in the game anyway.

- WWE is working on a book/biography called “Second Nature” written by Ric and Charlotte Flair. It is set to be released in September.

- I am ok with Bobby Roode vs. Roderick Strong in NXT but Roddy needs to win if they go that route. It is too early to beat him. Roode vs. Strong is set to be taped tonight at the NXT Tapings in Orlando and will air on the July 5th episode. Also taking place is Asuka defending her NXT Women’s Title against Nikki Cross in a Last Man Standing match. July 5th will be the 400 episode of NXT. With that being said, I fully expect a title change to take place. Whether it will be Roode dropping his or Asuka dropping hers remains to be seen.

- Kimber Lee has been renamed and will now be working the Mae Young Classic under the name Abbey Laith.

- Former WWE Diva Serena Deeb (Serena in CM Punk’s Straight Edge Society) is in talks with WWE about a return for the Mae Young Classic tournament. She has been “retired” following some concussion issues several years ago.

- Stardom’s Kairi Hojo is on her way to Florida to begin her time at the Performance Center. She is expected to be participating in the Mae Young Classic. Also, confirmed by WWE to be appearing as a competitor in the tournament is Tessa Blanchard, daughter of WWE Hall of Famer Tully Blanchard and step daughter of wrestling legend Magnum T.A.

- Former Impact wrestler Crazy Steve had a WWE Tryout this week at the Performance Center in Orlando.

- Now that he is 100%, former WWE Star Shelton Benjamin is once again in talks about returning to WWE. Shelton had agreed to return last year during the brand split however his medicals revealed that he had a torn rotator cuff and he required surgery that has kept him out of action for 6 months. He is fully healed and back to wrestling independently.

- WWE is internally discussing hosting Wrestlemania in London in the near future. They sent out a survey asking as much and included Toronto and New York for possible future cities.

- The city of Memphis has offered to sell the Mid-South Coliseum to WWE Hall of Famer Jerry “The King” Lawler for $1. No one has been using the venue recently since new arenas in the area have opened up. They are likely going to have to tear it down soon due to costs. Lawler had considered the offer however the upkeep of the building costs about $63,000 per month. That means he would have to run events out of the building full time to continue.

- This weekend marks the 10 Year Anniversary of the most tragic story in wrestling history as “He Who Shall Not Be Named” committed the brutal crime of murdering his family before murdering himself.

WWE GREAT BALLS OF FIRE PPV is on Sunday, July 9th, 2017 from Dallas Texas and the line-up is as follows:

  • WWE UNIVERSAL TITLE: Brock Lesnar © w/Paul Heyman vs. Samoa Joe
  • AMBULANCE MATCH: Roman Reigns vs. Braun Strowman
  • IMPACT WRESTLING NEWS and NOTES:

    - Impact is doing some housecleaning as both Al Snow, Pat Kenney (Simon Diamond) and Shane Helms, producers/agents for the promotion have been wished well on their future endeavors. I assume it is a cost cutting measure because I can honestly not see any other valid reason for letting them go due to their knowledge of the business and how big of a help they could be to the roster.

    - Sonjay Dutt and Abyss have stepped into the role of agents/producers.

    - Mike Tenay was offered an opportunity to call the Slammiversary show but turned it down which is why former ESPN columnist Robert Flores is calling the show alongside Don West.

    - Dos Caras, father of Alberto El Patron will be in El Patron’s corner at Slammiversary.

IMPACT’S SLAMMIVERSARY PPV is on Sunday, July 2nd, 2017 from Orlando Florida and the line-up is as follows:

  • UNIFICATION OF IMPACT TITLE WITH GFW TITLE: Bobby Lashley © vs. Alberto El Patron ©
  • Jeremy Borash & Joseph Park vs. Josh Matthews & “Big Poppa Pump” Scott Steiner
  • UNIFICATION MATCH OF IMPACT KNOCKOUTS TITLE WITH GFW WOMEN’S TITLE: Rosemary © vs. Sienna ©
  • FULL METAL MAYHEM MATCH: Eddie Edwards & Alisha Edwards vs. Davey Richards & Angelina Love
  • STRAP MATCH: Ethan Carter III vs. “Cowboy” James Storm
  • 2 OUT OF 3 FALLS X-DIVISION TITLE: Sonjay Dutt © vs. Low-Ki
  • Ring of Honor / Lucha Underground / Independent / International News and Notes:

    - In the “you can’t make this stuff up” category, Vince Russo filed a restraining order against Jim Cornette based on comments that Cornette made on his podcast. SMH.

    - R.I.P. to Buddy Wayne of the Pacific Northwest as he passed away unexpectedly last weekend at age 50 due to a major heart attack. Wayne is best known for being the wrestling trainer of Bryan Alvarez of the Figure Four Weekly/Wrestling Observer website. Wayne had done plenty of enhancement work for the WWE in the 90’s including an early match against a newly heel Shawn Michaels which Michaels gave him a lot before beating him. Wayne is survived by his wife and son.

    - Also R.I.P. to Chandler Biggins, co-owner of A.I.W. Wrestling. He has been hospitalized for several weeks with a major bacterial infection in his body which the cause is unkown. To show you how bad his stay was, Biggins walked around at 400+ pounds but had lost 200+ puunds during his hospital stay. He is well known on the independents with WWE U.S. Champion Kevin Owens sharing his feelings on Biggins passing via social media. Owens wrote: “I feel the need to write about him because I want to make sure that as many people as possible know that last night, we lost one of the good ones. I first met Chris, who is known to a lot of people within the industry as Chandler Biggins, in 2013. He and his buddy, John Thorne, run a great independent promotion in Cleveland, OH by the name of AIW. Chris and John often gave me credit for helping AIW grow by reaching a new audience with my matches, but they deserve credit for rekindling in me a love for independent wrestling that was getting thinner and thinner as the end of my tenure on the independent scene drew closer. My dream from the start was always to be in WWE and after 15 years on the indies, I was more than ready to move on. Thankfully, WWE came calling and I realized my dream but getting to perform in AIW and meeting Chris and John lifted my spirits and made me feel like I could still have fun on the indies at the time. I truly can’t thank them enough for that.” Many of the Who’s Who of the independent world passed through A.I.W. including Michael Elgin, Matt Riddle, Tom Lawlor, Grado, Pentagon Jr. Zack Sabre Jr., Colt Cabana, Eddie Kingston, Gregory Iron, Joey Janela, Laredo Kid, M-Dogg, and notable A.I.W. Alumni including Daniel Bryan, Seth Rollins, Dean Ambrose, Antonio Cesaro, Sami Callihan, Low-Ki, Steve Corino, The Briscoes, Davey Richards, A.J. Styles, Kevin Owens, Kyle O’Reilly, Sonjay Dutt, Sami Zayn and more.

    - Kota Ibushi will be in this year’s G-1 Climax tournament for New Japan despite working for the past year for the promotion under the Tiger Mask W gimmick. The rest of the participants are:

  • Hiroshi Tanahashi
  • Togi Makabe
  • Michael Elgin
  • Kazuchika Okada
  • Hirooki Goto
  • Tomohiro Ishii
  • Toru Yano
  • Yoshi-Hashi
  • Kenny Omega
  • Bad Luck Fale
  • Tama Tonga
  • Tetsuya Naito
  • Seiya Sanada
  • Evil
  • Satoshi Kojima
  • Yuji Nagata
  • Juice Robinson
  • Minoru Suzuki
  • Zack Sabre Jr
  • - Cody is not expected to be in the tournament as many believe he is going to win the ROH title at tonight’s PPV thus having him in the G-1 without winning the whole thing would be counterproductive for ROH. I doubt they would book him to win so losing multiple times would be a disservice.

    - The Okada/Omega 2 match will air on AXS on June 30th UN-EDITED. So the full hour will air.

    - The Bullet Club shirts that were being sold in limited “Hot Topic” stores across the U.S. were so successful that ALL “Hot Topic” stores will be carrying them going forward.

    - Japanese legend Mr. Pogo passed away yesterday at age 66 while undergoing back surgery. It is reported that he suffered a cerebral infraction during the operation which caused his death.

    - Haku is coming out of retirement to work the CMLL World Cup Tournament. He is 58. He last wrestled for CMLL in their 1ST World Cup back in 1994.

    - AAA in Mexico has made the decision to move the Triplemania PPV from August 26th to August 27th. August 26th is the day of Floyd Mayweather vs. Conor McGregor.

    - Matt Riddle and Marty Scurll are going to be coming into the Crash promotion in Mexico.

RING OF HONOR “Best of the Best” PPV is TONIGHT from Lowell Massachusetts and the line-up is as follows:

  • ROH TITLE: Christopher Daniels © vs. Cody
  • ROH TAG TEAM TITLES: The Young Bucks (Matt & Nick Jackson) © vs. War Machine (Hanson & Rowe)
  • ROH TV TITLE: Kushida © vs. Marty Scurll
  • ROH TRIO TITLES: The Briscoes (Mark & Jay) & Bully Ray © vs. Dalton Castle & The Boys
  • LOSERS MUST BREAK UP MATCH: The Rebellion (Caprice Coleman/Kenny King/Rhett Titus/ Shane Taylor) vs. Search & Destroy (Chris Sabin/Alex Shelly/Jay White/Jonathan Gresham)
  • Jay Lethal vs. Silas Young
  • Ultimo Guerrego & El Terrible vs. Matt Taven & Vinny Marseglia
  • STRAP MATCH: Frankie Kazarian vs. Hangman Page

  • MMA News and Notes:

    - Looks like Holly Holm lives to fight another day as she won her fight last weekend vs. Bethe Correia via knockout. She was on a 3 fight losing streak since defeating Ronda Rousey via the same head kick that KO’d Correia. A 4th straight loss would have certainly gotten her cut from UFC.

    - Amazing how things work. UFC Women’s Featherweight Champion Germaine de Randamie was stripped of her title due to refusing to defend against Cristiane “Cyborg” Justino on July 29th due to feeling that Cyborg is a drug cheat. Funny thing is, Michael Bisping wasn’t stripped of his UFC Middleweight title when he refused to defend against Yoel Romero for the exact same reason. Cyborg vs. Megan Anderson will now take place on July 29th to crown a new champion. It is made even worse by Randamie not being told of their decision by UFC and instead finding out via social media. WOW.

    - Meghan Anderson is claiming that she will show the world that Cyborg is human after all. LOLOLOLOLZ.

    - Mo Money for McGregor. He revealed earlier this week that he is NOT tied to UFC for his boxing match with Floyd Mayweather. That means he is free to seek out sponsorships outside of his UFC/Reebok deal.

    - Nate Diaz is being sued by his former agents, The Ballengee Group for $1,000,000.00 citing breach of contract as they were fired shortly before his UFC 202 rematch against Conor McGregor where he made a few million on his payday. By firing them, the Ballengee Group claims that they were fired without purpose only for Diaz to not have to pay them their portion of his pay.

    - UFC Middleweight Champion Michael Bisping is claiming that Dana White called him recently to inform him that George St. Pierre doesn’t want to fight him. White informed him that he is still working on it and will continue to attempt to make that fight happen but GSP doesn’t want it so it is difficult.

    - There is no new updates on the condition for UFC Hall of Famer Matt Hughes other than that he is still in critical condition and has not woken up as of yet. His family is keeping the his exact condition closely guarded. That cannot possibly be a good sign. Also not a good sign is that “Triumph Over Tragedy”, the foundation where Hughes sits on the board of directors has offered to pay to have Hughes transported to Shepherd Medical Facility in Atlanta Georgia. Shepherd’s is a hospital that specializes in traumatic brain injuries.

    - UFC has a FS1 show on Sunday from Oklahoma City headlined by Kevin Lee vs. Michael Chiesa. Also on the show is B.J. Penn vs. Dennis Silver and Tim Boetsch vs. Johnny Hendricks. Penn needs to hang it up or UFC needs to just let him go so he can fight elsewhere. It is a shame that his legacy is being tarnished. He has not won a fight in 7 years. WTF?

    - Tough news out of MMA as former UFC Heavyweight Tim Hauge passed away earlier this week following a professional boxing event where he was knocked completely unconscious for several minutes before being helped backstage. He then went to the hospital, slipped into a coma and never regained consciousness. He was declared brain dead and passed away from his injuries. The fight was apparently brutal as he was knocked down 4 times in the 1st round and then again to start the 2nd round before being knocked out. So 6 knockdowns in 2 rounds total. Someone needs to examine the referee of that bout.

    - Tomorrow’s Bellator PPV from Madison Square Garden in NYC will be announced by Mauro Ranallo and Jimmy Smith. Mike Goldberg will be making his debut as well but will be doing the cutaways from the desk with Brendan Schaub and Josh Thompson. Ranallo also confirmed that he will be calling play-by-play for the Floyd Mayweather vs. Conor McGregor fight. UFC cannot be possibly happy about this since Ranallo works for Bellator and UFC had no say on anything regarding the fight.

    - According to ESPN Reporter Darrell Rovell, Mayweather/McGregor will generate about $370 million in revenue with Floyd getting $220 mil, McGregor getting $110 mil and UFC getting about $25 - $40 mil. WOW.

BELLATOR MMA is TOMORROW NIGHT from New York City and the line-up is as follows:

  • Chael Sonnen vs. Wanderlei Silva
  • Fedor Emelianenko vs. Matt Mirtione
  • BELLATOR LIGHTWEIGHT TITLE: Michael Chandler © vs. Brent Primus
  • Douglas Lima vs. Lorenz Larkin
  • Aaron Pico vs. Zach Freeman
  • Ryan Bader vs. Phil Davis
  • UFC 213 is on Saturday, July 8th, 2017 from Las Vegas Nevada and the line-up is as follows:

  • UFC WOMEN’S BANTAMWEIGHT TITLE: Amanda Nunes © vs. Valentina Shevchenko
  • INTERIM UFC MIDDLEWEIGHT TITLE: Yoel Romero vs. Robert Whitaker
  • Robbie Lawler vs. Donald Cerrone
  • Fabricio Werdum vs. Alistair Overeem
  • Anthony Pettis vs. Jim Miller
  • UFC 214 is on Saturday, July 29th, 2017 from Anaheim California and the line-up is as follows:

  • UFC LIGHT HEAVYWEIGHT TITLE: Daniel Cormier © vs. Jon Jones
  • UFC WOMEN’S FEATHERWEIGHT TITLE: Cris “Cyborg” Justino vs. Megan Anderson
  • Jim Manuwa vs. Volkan Oezdemir
  • Chan Sung Jung a.k.a The Korean Zombie vs. Ricardo Lamas
  • Renan Barao vs. Aljamain Sterling
  • Sage Northcutt vs. John Makdessi

    - BONUS Random ARTICLE of the week: So this is such a tragic story and I am still in disbelief that the U.S. hasn’t done anything about it. There is a zero percent chance that he randomly got sick. He was beaten until he was brain dead and we need to strike back.

    - BONUS Random ARTICLE of the week PART 1: I sincerely hope this story is true. Amazing if it is.

    - BONUS Random ARTICLE of the week PART 2: I totally did not see this coming. Good for the Brown/Houston family if he did something.

    - Friendly Reminder that “Power” returns on Sunday on Starz. Yay!!

    - In what is with 100% certainty NOT a good sign, Directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller have been FIRED the Han Solo film in the middle of production citing creative differences. This is absolutely terrible with only 3 weeks of production to go. OUCH. Famed director Ron Howard is confirmed to be stepping in to complete the film.

    - Better Call Saul came to an end this week with the season finale. While not lackluster, I would have like to have seen some Mike Ermantraut as well as Jimmy/Chuck McGill and Senor Salamanca stuff. The ending however was good stuff and I am disappointed that we now have to wait till next year for some resolution.

    - I saw Wonder Woman last weekend and it was fantastic. I really hope that the powers that be at Warner Brothers can now see and understand that all comic book heroes don’t have to be dark and brooding and that comic book movies can be fun and entertaining. Just imagine what could have been had WB decided to portray Superman/Clark Kent like they were supposed to and not some miserable goth like brooding loner.

    - In what can only be seen as a positive, Mark Wahlberg noted that “Transformers: The Last Knight” which is due out soon will be his FINAL film of the franchise. Thank goodness because the last film was god awful and this one does not look better. In what is also not a good sign, the film opened on Wednesday in the United States and is tracking to a SERIES LOW opening weekend. So either fans caught on to how terrible this franchise has become or they are just flat out tired of it. Either way, it is not a good sign.

    - Netflix’s “G.L.O.W.” debuts tonight. The full season will be available for streaming.

    - Disappointed to read that Virginia Madsen (Senator Kimberlee Hookstraten) on Designated Survivor will not be returning for Season 2 in September. She revealed earlier this week that she was informed that they do not have any intention of bringing her character back in season 2. She was a good part of season 1 and it was nice to see her become an friend to POTUS.

    - HBO is working on a “Watchmen” Series to be helmed by Damon Lindelof. Lindelof is best known as one of the creators/showrunners behind “Lost”.

    - Carnage has been confirmed as the villain for the Venom film that Sony is working on.
