T.G.I.F. with Matt Dawgs: #403

Good day to you all and welcome to We Want Insanity. I am your host for today, Matt Dawgs and this is my column. Today is the end of the work week and the time to look back at all the goings-on over the past seven days as I wrap it up with a bow and spout it out bit by bit. Buckle up. Enjoy the ride.

MATT NOTE: Just an FYI to you all that there will be NO COLUMN by me next week. I am on vacation but hopefully James Bullock is good to fill in during my absence. If not, I am sure J.G. will have a treat for you. Either way, I will make sure I watch Brock Lesnar vs. Samoa Joe and give you my thoughts on it as soon as possible.

- Big Cass vs. Enzo Amore is set for Sunday and I sincerely hope they have a good agent helping them piece their match together because honestly, it will be the blind leading the blind there. It really sucks for Enzo since he cut a damn good promo on RAW on Monday and has more than enough charisma to spare but can’t work a lick in the ring. Cass on the other hand, while the better worker of the two, isn’t exactly a ring general and thus isn’t going to “carry” Enzo on Sunday. Cass can be carried though which is good for his future. Too bad Enzo isn’t the one that is going to be able to do it.

- Big Cass asked during his promo if Charley Caruso ever heard someone talk so much without saying anything. Um…has Big Cass not listened to a Bray Wyatt promo? Wyatt is the epitome of doing this.

- Continuity. It is always a HUGE problem that WWE has regarding their storylines. My biggest pet peeve though is when WWE has continuity issues throughout the show. A perfect example of this would be the backstage segment with Braun Strowman and Kurt Angle. Strowman demanded some competition tonight to which Angle replied that everyone is slated for competition which is why he couldn’t give Strowman an opponent. That would be a fine way to get out of booking Strowman in a match….if it was true. However just a few segments later when Angle is confirming with Sheamus and Cesaro that they would get to choose the Hardy’s in a 30 minute Iron Man match. Cesaro then noted that he wanted a match and Angle suggested Strowman to which Cesaro declined and said he wanted Balor which is what Angle confirmed. Um…dude, you just said earlier that everyone was slated for competition. How was that true is Cesaro was looking for an opponent and you gave him one with Balor. That means Finn Balor and Cesaro were NOT scheduled for competition. LIAR!!! It also seemed odd that everyone is slated for competition tonight and then Angle interrupts Miz TV and books Miz vs. Heath Slater. So obviously none of those guys were booked. Oh yeah, how about Titus O’Neil and Apollo Crews who ended up in the main event being killed by Braun. They weren’t in competition either. So what the f*ck was Angle talking about when he said that to Braun?

- P.S. – Samoa Joe and Brock Lesnar didn’t have a match on Monday but were in the building. So obviously they didn’t have competition.

- Health Slater said he had never been given a one on one title shot in all his time in WWE. That cannot be correct can it?

- Are Goldust and R-Truth ever going to have a match? Yes the promos have been entertaining but end this goddamn feud already and move Goldust into something meaningful.

- So after weeks of being the heel in the feud, the go-home show featured Samoa Joe as a babyface? Asking because he was acting like one.

- Boy did Apollo Crews get buried or what? Remember when WWE had high hopes for him? Ouch.

- It is good to have John Cena back as you can see the fans excitement and energy when he is on TV. Say what you want about him and his reactions but he is a STAR.

- Also great to have Rusev back. He was awesome in his promo with Cena. I just hope they don’t sacrifice him for Cena.

- Where is Jason Jordan? Are American Alpha splitting?

- Naomi having her title belt glow and change color is pretty cool.

- Lana being squashed ISN’T pretty cool. They are however going to put her with Tamina as Tamina will be her “muscle”.

- This Daniel Bryan/James Ellsworth angle better be leading to Bryan destroying him.

- I was incredibly more pleased with the Usos/New Day rap battle than I should have been. Both teams did extremely well and I enjoyed it.

- Nothing is close to being finalized however WWE has had internal discussions about introducing a WOMEN’S ROYAL RUMBLE match for January. I am ok with this if they want to go ahead with it.

- Push Baron Corbin. Push Baron Corbin. I am fine with that but why in the world would they book a live event match of Baron Corbin vs. BROCK LESNAR in Detroit on July 29th?

- Pretty disappointed that NXT gave away Bobby Roode vs. Roderick Strong on TV this week as it was absolutely an NXT Takeover quality main event. NXT needs to shy away from giving away their 1st time matches on weekly TV like WWE does. I get that it was the 400th episode but still, more people will watch Takeover than NXT’s weekly show. A damn good match nonetheless though. Go out of your way to see it if you can.

- Props to Kevin Owens as his DVD got released earlier this week. Owens posted a picture of his father purchasing the DVD from the local video store in his hometown which is the same video store that his father rented Wrestlemania XI in 1995. It was that video rental that Owens credits for him wanting to be a wrestler.

- While this could be an absolute smokescreen, Kurt Angle revealed in an interview that he has NOT had a physical with WWE as of yet and does not plan on getting one until he is told that he is going to wrestle. He did note that an in-ring return is more than likely though. Just a matter of when. As I have noted in this column, he is tentatively penciled in to wrestle Triple H at Summerslam.

- IWGP Champion Kazuchika Okada was backstage at both Raw and Smackdown this week. He was visiting with friends Finn Balor and Shinsuke Nakamura among others.

- Tough news for Tommaso Ciampa as his injury is expected to keep him out of action until early 2018. Biggest push/angle of his wrestling career and he is shelved for several more months.

- Primo and Epico Colon a.k.a. The Colons have requested their release from WWE. No word on whether or not it will be granted however they are selling new merchandise on Wrestling Tees.com.

- Congrats to former Impact star Gunner as he made his NXT debut last week. He is now wrestling under the name Chad Lail.

- Best wishes to longtime WWE fan and correspondent Maria Menounos who revealed that she recently had BRAIN SURGERY to remove a tumor the size of a golf ball.

R.I.P. to Smith Hart aged 68, brother to WWE Hall of Famer Bret “Hitman” Hart as he passed away over the weekend following a long battle with colon cancer.

- Forbes Magazine revealed that WWE had a security breach earlier this week via online where the names and information of over 3 million people were taken. Thankfully no credit card or other payment information was taken in the process.

    - All of that making fun of Global Force Wrestling especially when Anthem Sports purchased the rights to it last week were for naught as Impact has in fact REBRANDED and will now be known as Global Force Wrestling moving forward. The weekly show will still be “Impact” but now it will be GFW Impact.

    - Slammiversary took place on Sunday with Alberto El Patron successfully defeating Bobby Lashley to unite the Impact and GFW titles. He is now the undisputed GFW World Champion. His fiancée Paige was sitting ringside during the show wearing a lucha mask. She was not shown on camera nor identified. This was revealed by a fan on twitter who took a photo and it revealed her visitor’s pass that she was holding which had her real name on it.

    - El Patron also reference Paige although not by name in a promo on Impact yesterday saying he will always have his crazy, beautiful chick by his side. He also apparently joined LAX….or did he???

    - Despite feuding for months and then having a match at Slammiversary where the loser will no longer be allowed to be a part of the commentary team, Josh Matthews, is STILL part of the commentary team. So yes they advertised a stipulation and the very next day did NOT adhere to the stipulation thus making the stipulation null and void. So even though they are under new ownership and a new name as part of a rebranding effort, GWF still equals TNA. SMH.

    - NFL star D’Angelo Williams also made his wrestling debut and looked incredibly impressive in it. I saw highlights and he did far more than anyone else in his position with as little experience as him. If he chose to pursue it full time, he’d be AMAZING. However he told ESPN that it was a one-time thing and plans on continuing with football.

    - In smart news by GFW, their television tapings that they recorded back in 2015 which was to be a television pilot will air as 4 separate “One Night Only” PPV events thus fulfilling those PPV commitments.

    - The August 17th edition of Impact will reveal the companies new title belts. They will also announce the latest inductee into their Hall of Fame. Has to be Jeff Jarrett no? Anyway, the 17th will be a LIVE show and the start of their next set of television tapings. As of now, they are taped up until then.

    - Gail Kim revealed at the latest Impact tapings that this will be her FINAL year in wrestling and will retire next year. She did note that she will be wrestling for Impact soon and will capture the Knockouts title and go out on top.

    - Also announced at the tapings is the “Super X Cup” which has not been done in 12 years. It is an 8 person single elimination tournament featuring wrestlers from other promotions as well as GFW. The participants are:

  • Sammy Guevara (WWN, Texas independent scene)
  • Drago (AAA/Lucha Underground)
  • ACH (EVOLVE/indies, formerly of ROH)
  • Andrew Everett (GFW)
  • Taiji Ishimori (NOAH)
  • Davey Richards (GFW)
  • Dezmond Xavier (GFW)
  • Idris Abraham (GFW)
  • .

-The last Super X Cup was held in 2005 with the finals having Samoa Joe defeating A.J. Styles to win the tournament. Boy what a difference 12 years make for both GFW and Joe & Styles huh?

    - Former Knockout Velvet Sky has announced that she has retired from professional wrestling and has went back to college. Her goal is to become a personal trainer.

    - Rockstar Spud has been off of television as of late due to VISA issues. He is expected back soon. Grado was back this week as he has had his VISA issues cleared up.

    - ACH is now with GFW and debuted at the latest tapings.

Ring of Honor / Lucha Underground / Independent / International News and Notes:

    - New Japan Pro Wrestling crowned their 1st ever United States Champion following a tournament they held in Long Branch California. That man is “The Cleaner” Kenny Omega. Omega showed why he is the best wrestler in the World today as his matches on both days were the best matches of the weekend. He will now be defending the title in not only New Japan but will likely be a mainstay in Ring of Honor as well as New Japan wants him defending the belt frequently in ROH. By putting the title on Omega, that almost certifies that he will remain in New Japan when his contract expires in January.

    - Kazuchika Okada cemented himself as the performer of 2017 with a damn good match against Cody. Perhaps the best match of Cody’s entire career. Okada continues to impress and is the best in ring champion holding a title today.

    - Speaking of Cody, he has been working with a grade A shoulder separation but will not miss any time or require any surgery.

    - The shows were good on both days as they had an incredible crowd and some solid matches. There were no “blow away” matches as if it was the Tokyo Dome but the matches they did have were all good. They did continue the tease of Omega and Cody.

    - WWE Hall of Famer “Stone Cold” Steve Austin was at the Long Beach New Japan show on Saturday.

    - New Japan owner Takaaki Kidani did announce that they will be back in the United States in 2018 at some point with no exact date confirmed. The eventual plan is to run several west coast shows per year hopefully starting no later than March or April 2018. They also plan on opening a Los Angeles office by the end of the year as well as a dojo to train.

    - Roppongi Vice is NO MORE as Trent Barreta will be moving onto singles competition and will be competing in the heavyweight division.

    - Virgil hits a CANADIAN DESTROYER.

    - Jeff Cobb, Trevor Lee and Flash Morgan Webster have been announced as participants for PWG’s “Battle of Los Angeles”.

    MMA News and Notes:

    - Floyd Mayweather vs. Conor McGregor is being priced at $89.99 for standard definition and $99.99 for high definition. This means that if they get 5 million U.S. PPV buys as Las Vegas is predicting than the show will be making $500,000,000/00 in revenue on U.S. PPV alone. That is NOT counting the U.K. revenue, bars/restaurant orders, sponsorship and live gate. This show could top $1 BILLION in revenue which will be more than both WWE and UFC has made in a ONE YEAR time frame…COMBINED.

    - Speaking of McGregor, UFC President Dana White revealed that Conor has told him that he WANTS to fight Khabib Nurmagomedov THIS YEAR after the Floyd fight and is even willing to fight him in Russia.

    - Congrats to the latest UFC Hall of Fame inductees as they held the ceremony last night in Las Vegas with Urijah Faber, Joe Silva, Maurice Smith and Kazushi Sakuraba were inducted.

    - Despite having a staph infection and thus being unable to fight tomorrow night at UFC 213, Robbie Lawler vs. Donald Cerrone has been moved to July 29th at UFC 214 from Anaheim. That show is f*cking STACKED.

    - UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Daniel Cormier revealed that he was actually offered Jim Manuwa for his next title defense but he noted that he HAD TO fight Jon Jones before anyone else.

    - Speaking of Jones, his suspension officially ended yesterday.

    - Despite telling Dana White that he wants to challenge for the UFC Welterweight Title, George St. Pierre revealed that he sent a group text message to Michael Bisping and Dana White challenging Bisping for a fight on November 4th at Madison Square Garden in New York City. He is awaiting a response from both men.

    - Nate Diaz has been suspended by USADA for ONE YEAR due to missing his 3rd drug test in the last 12 months. Per USADA rules, you have to notify them of your location at all times. He has not been where he said he would be on 3 separate occasions. So that is considered a failure and thus he will be unable to fight for one year. According to UFC President Dana White, he doesn’t expect Nick to fight again period.

    - Cody Garbrandt revealed that he will not be back from his injury until November the earliest.

    - While still not going into full details of his condition, Matt Hughes family revealed that he is off a ventilator and is now breathing on his own.

    - UFC Has signed a rematch between Mauricio “Shogun” Rua and Ovince St. Preux for September 23rd from Japan.

    - Former UFC Star Ronda Rousey was on Live with Kelly and Ryan earlier this week and allegedly if someone wants to interview Ronda Rousey as part of the deal to get her on the show, you CANNOT ask her about fighting/MMA. Suffice to say, Kelly and her co-host did NOT ask her about fighting.

UFC 213 is TOMORROW NIGHT from Las Vegas Nevada and the line-up is as follows:

  • UFC WOMEN’S BANTAMWEIGHT TITLE: Amanda Nunes © vs. Valentina Shevchenko
  • INTERIM UFC MIDDLEWEIGHT TITLE: Yoel Romero vs. Robert Whitaker
  • Fabricio Werdum vs. Alistair Overeem
  • Anthony Pettis vs. Jim Miller
  • UFC 214 is on Saturday, July 29th, 2017 from Anaheim California and the line-up is as follows:

  • UFC LIGHT HEAVYWEIGHT TITLE: Daniel Cormier © vs. Jon Jones
  • UFC WELTERWEIGHT TITLE: Tyrone Woodley © vs. Demian Maia
  • UFC WOMEN’S FEATHERWEIGHT TITLE: Cristiane “Cyborg” Justino vs. Tonya Evinger
  • Robbie Lawler vs. Donald Cerrone
  • Jim Manuwa vs. Volkan Oezdemir
  • Chan Sung Jung a.k.a The Korean Zombie vs. Ricardo Lamas
  • Renan Barao vs. Aljamain Sterling
  • Sage Northcutt vs. John Makdessi
  • UFC 215 is on Saturday, September 9th, 2017 from Edmonton Alberta Canada and the line-up is as follows:

  • Junior Dos Santos vs. Francis Ngannou

    - It has been revealed that the villain in season 2 of Netflix’s Luke Cage will be John McIver a.k.a. The Bushmaster. They will also be introducing Tilda Johnson a.k.a. Nightshade as she will be playing the vigilante from the comics.

    - I have started Netflix’s “House of Cards” and it is a damn good show.

    - R.I.P. to Joan Lee, wife of Marvel legend Stan Lee as she passed away at age 93 earlier this week. Joan and Stan had been married for 69 years. So sad.
