T.G.I.F. with Matt Dawgs: #452

Good day to you all and welcome to We Want Insanity. I am your host for today, Matt Dawgs and this is my column. Today is the end of the work week and the time to look back at all the goings-on over the past seven days as I wrap it up with a bow and spout it out bit by bit. Buckle up. Enjoy the ride.

BONUS MATT NOTE: A hell of a busy/newsworthy weekend/week for wrestling and MMA over the past 8 days or so. WOWSERS. Sit back, strap in and enjoy the ride.

MDJG NOTE: James Guttman is the Dad of Hi Blog! I'm Dad.

WWE NEWS AND NOTES:

- Raw was just “there” this week. It wasn’t terrible by any means but it wasn’t fantastic either. What is telling however is that the show drew the LOWEST RATING EVER with a 1.72 rating and that is including holiday episode of RAW, Raw’s that went against Monday Night Football, Raw’s airing against the MLB World Series, Raw’s that aired against WCW Monday Nitro, Raw’s against Presidential Debates, etc. The last time WWE drew a 1.7 rating was for an episode of Prime Time Wrestling back in October of 1992. OUCH.

- Extremely interesting that WWE.com posted an article about Brock Lesnar showing up at UFC on Saturday yet makes NO MENTION of him on Monday’s RAW and made it a point of having Roman Reigns say he was moving onto “bigger and better things” after he beats Lashley yet he doesn’t mention what those things are. They did NOT mention him appearing at UFC on television which in my mind was kind of dumb since having it mentioned would only add to the aura that Brock is a legit bad ass and would also have helped further WWE’s cause of painting Lesnar as a dick that doesn’t care about WWE or the Universal title. It would have also planted further seeds that Brock doesn’t plan on coming to “do business” before he leaves to go fight. UFC basically laid it all out for them on a silver platter to get Roman Reigns potentially cheered and WWE passed. SMH.

- The entire build to Reigns and Lashley was fantastic. I feel like this is an important match up. It has been a while since WWE made me feel like this. Imagine my surprise when I found out that Paul Heyman was backstage at RAW on Monday and was asked to consult on the angle. It was even more surprising that he was traveling with RAW since Brock wasn’t there and Heyman was NOT in Las Vegas on Saturday with Brock for UFC.

- Heyman was asked to consult on the segment however because it directly involves Lesnar since the winner of this feud is penciled in to be Lesnar’s Summerslam challenger. Heyman has been involved in the scripting of every Lesnar feud to date on this run including Samoa Joe, Braun Strowman, A.J. Styles and Goldberg.

- It would be interesting if Heyman ended up with Lashley if/when Brock leaves since Heyman was big on working with Lashley when Lashley was in OVW while Heyman was in charge. Lashley is also very high on Heyman and loved working with him back then.

- Noticeable that when WWE does pull apart brawls, they usually send out a bunch of jobbers and two semi-main event talents. In the past it used to be Sheamus & Cesaro when they were on RAW. This week is was Balor and Corbin which made sense since they are in a fairly important angle. I mention this because it was telling that Bobby Roode and The Authors of Pain were part of the job squad used to separate Lashley and Reigns. Wow.

- The Reigns dive over the top onto the crowd was impressive. It is a simple move but someone his size doing it makes it more special. It was a big deal when Taker used to do it and Reigns should also continue to do it sporadically and not over use it like he does the Superman punch.

- Nothing to see here. Nia Jax is a full-fledged babyface. What heel turn? I don’t know what you are talking about.

- Last week I noted that Kevin Owens can sell any of the crap comedy they give him and turn it into chicken salad. That being said, I didn’t mean that they need to turn Kevin Owens into a complete comedy figure. He and Braun has been 100% built as that which is ridiculous since both men are legit pushed as main event talent and bad asses. Yes, Owens plays chickensh*t heel from time to time but shouldn’t be pushed as comedy chickensh*t heel.

- So Mojo Rawley finally decided to fight No Way Jose? I mean whatever. I like that they are trying to make Mojo serious. He could be a solid heel if pushed correctly.

- Where the hell was Dr. Shelby? He was the only person that made these Bayley/Sasha Banks therapy sessions tolerable.

- This Sasha Banks and Bayley HAS TO culminate at Summer Slam. While I am all for the one on one match at the scene of their previous match of the year candidate, I completely feel like this angle is a complete waste of time and was dragged out way too long. They pulled the trigger too early on the break up and all the start/stop of it also hurt it greatly.

- The Rollins vs. Ziggler build has also been top notch. It bothers me so much that Rollins has been on fire yet WWE doesn’t give him the top slot since they are so hell bent on getting Roman Reigns over.

- By the way, despite being outnumbered, a babyface shouldn’t take a powder when confronted by heels. He should have stood his ground and in the end gotten beaten down. Having Rollins leave the ring when McIntyre and Ziggler came to it was bad in my opinion.

- Why all of this “B” Team build up if they are just going to lose at the PPV? Matt Hardy is like 0 – 3 against them in singles matches. No way are they losing the titles on Sunday.

- Matt’s catch phrase of Bray and him “Eating and Deleting” them was GOLD.

- For those who missed it, Coach made a subtle joke about “broken ribs in wrestling going around lately” and it was in fact a direct shot at Jim Ross. My mind is completely blown as to why Vince McMahon at his age is still stuck on Ross especially when Ross is under a deal to WWE still. SMH.

- I get that they are trying to build Lashley and Reigns as rivals and I think it has been great stuff. Some of the best they have done in a long while. But having Lashley cut a promo backstage saying he respects EVERYONE including Sami Zayn but doesn’t respect Roman Reigns is confusing. Why doesn’t he respect Reigns? He said because Reigns walks around like he is the man? Uh….he’s earned it.

- LASHLEY: “Believe That!!!” followed by thunderous boos. That would have been amazing had the crowd actually been booing. Yes, I am peeling back the curtain folks. Those boos heard when Lashley said that were piped in.

- Liv Morgan and Sarah Logan really need Ruby Riott. She is the glue that holds them together.

- Fingers crossed but they need to have Bobby Roode turn on Finn Balor. He NEEDS to go heel ASAP.

- SO WE ARE CLEAR: Despite the fact that Drew McIntyre continuously interferes in Dolph Ziggler’s matches and cost Seth Rollins the title, he still gets an opportunity to be Ziggler’s corner man at Extreme Rules meanwhile over on Smackdown, despite Asuka kicking his ass at every turn, he has to be held in a shark cage above the ring unable to interfere in the Carmella vs. Asuka match. Makes sense.

- ALSO SO WE ARE CLEAR: Kevin Owens has spent the past several weeks RUNNING away from Braun Strowman at every single turn. So what happens? They are booked inside a steel cage match at Extreme Rules where the winner is crowned by RUNNING AWAY FROM HIS OPPONENT?

- Honestly Kurt Angle, why the hell does Stephanie McMahon keep you in a general manager role when you continue to make stupid decisions like this?

- The Ronda Rousey commercial announcing her as a playable pre-order character for WWE 2K19 was AWESOME . Whoever thought of it needs a raise.

- Drew McIntyre has “IT”. He needs a solo main event level run. He and Rollins tore the house down on Monday.

- The Team Hell No stuff is still funny and with the Knoxville Mayoral election coming up in a month, it is only short term. The obvious build is to Miz vs. Bryan at Summerslam.

- It isn’t me is it? Shinsuke Nakamura just cannot compete at the level he used to compete at in New Japan? His excellent matches on the WWE roster are limited to a handful no with his best still being the Sami Zayn match in NXT no?

- What the f*ck? Rusev isn’t Russian anymore? He did commentary with zero accents; at all. Why? Why would WWE do this? Don’t get me wrong, he is still good and one of the best workers on the roster but I feel like he is in cruise control most of the time and doesn’t put the pedal to the floor ever. Like you know there are guys who cruise or phone it in from time to time but in a big match position, it is balls to the wall? Nakamura doesn’t seem to use that gear.

- I feel like I am already tired of James Ellsworth. Yes the comedy is funny but they are limited in what they can do with him.

- Not to be outdone by RAW but Andrade Cien Almas FINALLY had his match with Sin Cara which was over a month in the making. You know, like Mojo Rawley vs. No Way Jose which was about 3 weeks in the making?

- Oh, for the record, Almas vs. Sin Cara was WAY too competitive for my taste. They should have had Almas squash him. That is just my opinion.

- So SAnitY does another job? What the f*ck? I do not get it. They are 0 – 2 since debuting. The only way I will be ok with this is if it is setting up for the debut of Nikki Cross and she whips them into shape. They were a legit act in NXT and are being buried already on the main roster. Give them a chance to sink or swim before burying them WWE. Please.

- Jim Ross did reveal that he has NOT been contacted about commentating for the Mae Young Classic this year despite doing it last year. He doesn’t think he is going to be contacted either and noted that NXT has several young announcers that could use the experience more than he does. He also said he doesn’t believe he did his best work last year covering the tournament. Ross wasn’t contacted for the NXT U.K. launch either despite doing the U.K. title tournament and is probably done as an announcer even though he is under a deal. Once his deal is done, I think he will once again be done with the company.

- Colin Delaney on 205 Live. Nice.

- Even though she was “suspended”, Ronda Rousey made her Madison Square Garden debut defeating Nia Jax via arm bar last Saturday. She then made a run-in save for the babyface women and ended up “hugging” Nia Jax on Sunday in Philadelphia. SMH.

- Despite being advertised for Extreme Rules on Sunday, Ronda Rousey has been PULLED from local advertising for RAW from Buffalo on Monday. No word as to why but she is no longer expected to appear on the show.

- Also making his return and wrestling in MSG for the first time in 8 years was The Undertaker. A specific report from a fan noted that it was Taker’s best match in 2018. LOLOLOL. His BEST MATCH IN 2018!!!! WTF?

- Taker did get the loudest pop of the night and won the match for his team of himself, Roman Reigns and Braun Strowman by pinning Kevin Owens with a tombstone. Owens teamed with Baron Corbin and Elias.

- Despite being injured in a car accident two weeks ago, Bray Wyatt worked the live events this weekend teaming with Matt Hardy and was completely fine in the ring showing no ill effects from the crash.

- Jason Jordan is ready to go but creative has nothing for him at this time. He has been cleared for weeks now and has been backstage at television with nothing to do.

- Charlotte is still recovering from her breast reconstruction surgery after her implant exploded. She is due back in about three weeks and expected to be in action at Summer Slam.

- The big question has been Dean Ambrose and while Summerslam is still TBD, he is expected back before mid-September. Summerslam is the target date however. He isn’t expected to work a match if he hits that date because it would require him to be back on television before that to promote it. Instead the plan is for him to make his return in a surprise capacity as either a run in or a “save” for someone. I personally am looking forward to Rollins and Ambrose vs. Ziggler and McIntyre.

- Rey Mysterio has NOT put pen to paper yet but the latest on his return is that WWE is trying to sort out with him which remaining independent commitments he has and which commitments he won’t be allowed to do. One of the points of contention is the “All In” show by Cody and the Young Bucks on September 1st. Obviously WWE doesn’t want him on that show and he wants to do it. So that is the hold up.

- WWE U.S. Champion Jeff Hardy revealed that he has been having back issues as of late and that is not a good thing considering his entire style is about bumping, high flying and his finishing move is the Swanton. Hardy noted in an interview that he has been toning it down at Live Events and not doing the Swanton on those shows. Instead Hardy has been winning matches with the “Twist of Fate” but into a stunner instead.

- Best wishes go out to Fandango as he revealed that he has suffered a torn labrum in his shoulder and is expected to miss around six months of action. That is also a tough break for Tyler Breeze as that will completely kill off “The Fashion Files” and limit what they do with Breeze.

- Oney Lorcan underwent successfully surgery to repair his broken orbital bone last week. He is expected to be out of action until late September or early October.

- WWE revealed that former WWE Diva Kaitlyn a.k.a. Celeste Bonin is the first participant of this year’s tournament. That is awesome. Good for her.

- Also announced for the tournament is Rhea Ripley. She debuted last year in the Mae Young Classic defeating Miranda Salinas in the first round but was eliminated by Dakota Kai in round two. She has been around working NXT Live Events since last year’s tournament but her only TV appearance in NXT was a women’s battle royal in October.

- Former WWE Star Santino Marella revealed that his daughter is currently training under him to become a professional wrestler and their goal is for her to be training at the WWE Performance Center by the end of 2019.

- Also best wishes go out to WWE Hall of Famer Ric Flair as he underwent successful surgery to have his colostomy bag removed. He has had it since last year due to his major issues that he had undergone. He is scheduled to be released by the time you read this and is expected to be home for the next several weeks before going back to taking bookings.

- Good luck to Dustin “Goldust” Rhodes as he underwent successful knee surgery earlier this week. No word on what the surgery was for or how long he will be out of action for but he did undergo the surgery in Birmingham Alabama so the assumption is that it was fairly big as apparently both knees were operated on.

- Maria Kanellis revealed that she is set to begin training at the WWE Performance Center for her return which can only be good news for Mike Kanellis as he has been used as nothing more than enhancement talent at Live Events and rarely used on television other than in the background.

- Congrats go out to her husband Mike by the way as earlier this week he celebrated one year of sobriety.

- Speaking of the Performance Center, earlier this week marked the 5th anniversary of the opening of the venue. Time certainly flies. WOW.

- Garza Jr. was supposed to have begun at the Performance Center but has some visa issues that are being worked on and will move to Orlando as soon as they are sorted.

- I am fully confident that NXT Takeover Brooklyn, which I will be attending, will have the blow off match for Johnny Gargano vs. Tommaso Ciampa. YES!!!

- After being forced to sit out of the Women’s Royal Rumble match in January and then being sent home at Wrestlemania, Alicia Fox FINALLY made her in ring return last weekend in Philadelphia as a heel. She teamed with Liv Morgan and Sarah Logan to battle Ember Moon, Bayley and Natalya in a six women match up. She has not been used on television yet but will be eventually.

- While it is still in the planning stages, WWE is toying with the idea of doing an all-women’s event sometime in October. It will be a main roster event. No venue or location has been finalized but the event has been discussed as a “thank you” to the women since they were not allowed to attend or participate in the “Greatest Royal Rumble” in Saudi Arabia earlier this year.

- Just a friendly reminder to independent wrestlers out there. If you do something on an independent show and it doesn’t air on national television then it didn’t happen. Last weekend a viral video was floating around the internet of someone dressed as Michael Jackson doing a moonwalk DDT. Mind you, while the video was floating, never once was the promotion mentioned nor the guy dressed as Michael Jackson. So essentially I have no idea who the indy guy was. And….it didn’t happen on television. So you know what happens now? Everyone and their mother tagged WWE superstar Carmella in the video. Carmella doesn’t a moonwalk. So when she decides to do a moonwalk DDT on television, the move is hers. She invented it. Get it now? Don’t do something for the sake of it going viral if you aren’t going to help it go viral and get behind it. Joey Ryan flipped people with his d*ck. He helped it go viral. He did interviews and posted articles. Joey Ryan turned a wrestling career into a comedy wrestling career and now makes more money as “The D*ck Wrestler” than he would have had he never done that spot and worked a normal wrestling style as he did before doing that spot. He knew how to market himself and made himself famous. The Michael Jackson impersonator blew an opportunity.

- WWE has shuffled around some of their PPV’s for the remainder of 2018. They have moved the “Tables, Ladders & Chairs” PPV from October 21st in Boston Massachusetts to December 16th in San Jose California. To make up for the removal of a PPV in Boston, WWE will run a special “Live Event” on that day and it will be a “supershow” to make good for the fans that will feature both Raw and Smackdown talents including Ronda Rousey. WWE has officially made the “Super Show Down” in Melbourne Australia an official PPV event on October 6th which will be the new October PPV. Since TLC moved to December, WWE is no longer having “Clash of the Champions” which was originally the December 16th PPV from San Jose. So San Jose isn’t losing a PPV, just getting a name change for their event.

- Court Bauer’s MLW has also announced that they are going be doing a “WAR GAMES” match on September 6th in Fort Lauderdale Florida. Bauer noted that he actually holds the intellectual property for the match and MLW had actually done a War Games match back in 2003. Bauer noted that he does not plan on blocking anyone from using the term and only trademarked it so that he could use it for MLW without interference. That in essence means that he is playing nice with WWE since he could have caused issues when WWE used the term for NXT a few months back. WWE was NOT aware that the trademark on the name had lapsed and they were under the impression that they owned it.

- Phoenix Arizona police revealed the contents of their investigation in the Enzo Amore case that was dismissed and they did in fact reveal that Amore was NOT contacted prior to the date the allegations against him were made public on January 23rd. This means that his version of the story holds up and despite the claims against him being serious, he didn’t know about them beforehand and therefore WWE’s release of him due to not notifying them in advance are baseless. That sucks for him.

- For those of you who keep up with Total Divas, while I thought it was a work, apparently it wasn’t. There was an episode last season where someone tried to break into Miz and Maryse’s home in Los Angeles. While that specific incident was in fact a work for TV, there had been several attempts to break into their home so they have officially moved out of Los Angeles and now bought a home in Austin Texas. For television purposes and Miz’s gimmick, they are going to continue to be billed form Hollywood California but the truth is they are Austin

- WME-IMG may have some issues with WWE now as apparently Ari Emanuel had requested to remain on the WWE television rights deal but WWE was asked specifically by Fox due to Emanuel having a conflict of interest with owning UFC and also negotiating their deal. WWE had hired WME-IMG rival CAA (Creative Artists Agencey) to negotiate for them.

- Last Saturday, July 7th marked the 22nd anniversary of the formation of the nWo. WOW.

- WWE Hall of Famer Bret “Hitman” Hart and his brother’s widow Martha Hart both made the news this week as Hart commented in an interview this week that he felt Martha has done more to erase Owen Hart’s memory than preserve it by now allowing him into the WWE Hall of Fame. Hart noted: “I think Martha, Owens’s widow, she is a very obtuse, square-headed person. I think she’s done more to erase my brother Owen’s memory than she ever did to remember him. I think it really bothers me that the fans that loved Owen so much don’t get a chance to remember him.” However Martha issued a press release on Bret’s comments defending herself by saying: “Bret’s comments are rooted in the fact that I have steadfastly refused to work with the WWE to exploit Owen’s image for commercial gain,” she says in the release. “Owen was an incredible entertainer and I know that his many fans around the world enjoyed his wrestling career immensely. I encourage them to continue to do so. But I am firm in my belief that the WWE was responsible for Owen’s death. As a result, I cannot and will not support any efforts by the WWE to profit from Owen’s memory. Bret Hart's comments are disrespectful and cruel,” she continued. “It is disappointing that so many in the media have chosen to report them without seeking my perspective.” Now while I think it is absolutely wrong to make this public and Martha has every right to defend herself, Bret, as distasteful as his comments were, is 100% in the right. It is disappointing that his fans will never see him honored on WWE television even though he more than deserves it.

- In other sad Hart family news, Christopher Nowinski revealed that Jim “The Anvil” Neidhart is suffering from Alzheimer’s disease. He chatted with her about it backstage at RAW on Monday.

- Here is a FUN LITTLE VIDEO that WWE posted of a 3MB reunion.

- Smackdown has become ECW??

  • Ring of Honor / New Japan / Lucha Underground / IMPACT WRESTLING / Independent / International News and Notes:

    - Despite New Japan Pro Wrestling holding yet another successful U.S. event last weekend, that isn’t the biggest news of the week for the promotion. Late yesterday a press release from Sinclair Broadcasting announced that on Saturday, April 6th, 2019, Ring of Honor Wrestling and New Japan Pro Wrestling will be hosting the first ever “G1 Supercard” show…..at MADISON SQUARE GARDEN in NEW YORK CITY!!!! I absolutely plan on being a part of history and am going to try and get tickets immediately. The show will be a sellout as it is Wrestlemania weekend in New York. This was the event that WWE was trying to block from happening. I do not know the details other than somehow Sinclair Broadcasting managed to force MSG into allowing the show. I assume their legal team got involved and MSG really didn’t have a basis for not allowing them to rent the building since WWE is running at the Barclay’s Center in Brooklyn New York that evening with NXT Takeover. This is MAJOR!!!

    - Tickets for the G1 Supercard go on sale to Honor Club memebers on Wednesday August 8th at 10:00 am ET and the general public on Friday, August 10th.

    - New Japan Pro Wrestling held a jam packed event at the Cow Palace in San Francisco California which saw Kenny Omega make his first IWGP title defense against former friend and stablemate Cody. Omega won cleanly with the “One Winged Angel” only to see fellow Bullet Club Members Tama Tonga, Tonga Loa, King Haku lay out Omega and The Young Bucks and then destroy Hangman Page, Marty Scurll, Chase Owens and Yujiro Takahashi as well and declare themselves the “Firing Squad” and are no longer members of the Bullet Club. They were however run off by Cody who then hugged Omega and reunited with him and the rest of the crew. So we will now have the Samoan/Island contingent known as the “Firing Squad” feuding with the remainder of the BC.

    - This is a critical moment for Tama Tonga as he was booked SUPER STRONG in this angle as the leader of the group and he will be moving into the main event mix.

    - It was also revealed via the Guerrillas of Destiny YouTube channel that Bad Luck Fale is the one who made the call for Tama Tonga and family to turn on the Bullet Club. So Fale is officially part of the Firing Squad.

    - The show wasn’t all roses though as IWGP Junior Heavyweight Champion Hiromu Takahashi was severely injured in his successful title defense against Dragon Lee. Takahashi landed directly on his head taking the Phoenix Suplex and is believed to have broken his neck. He managed to finish he match so apparently is NOT paralyzed but is severely injured and New Japan has not given us a more thorough update on his health other than the fact that he is conscious, talking and sitting up. Rumor has it that he collapsed in the locker room following the match.

    - Speaking of Dragon Lee, he won this years “King of the Indies” tournament last Friday.

    - Takahashi has returned to Japan from San Francisco and is now being treated in a hospital there. So at least he is home but New Japan is being awful secretive about his well-being and that isn’t a good sign.

    - For those who didn’t see the show, Cody has in fact dyed his hair back to black. This was due to him landing a recurring role this summer on a network show. He isn’t able to reveal the name of the show as of yet but apparently it is a big deal. It is also the reason he isn’t booked for New Japan’s G-1 tournament. He is hoping to be booked for 2019 as working the G-1 has been a major goal of his. Two years ago he had just started working for New Japan and last year he wasn’t a top star yet. Now he is but the conflict prevented him from being booked.

    - Juice Robinson won the IWGP U.S. Title from Jay White on the show. Well deserved. He has to be the most improved wrestler in all the business in the past two years no?

    - Jim Ross suffered a rib injury while doing commentary for the show when White suplexed Robinson into the railing in front of the announce table causing Ross to violently fall backwards from his chair injuring himself. Color commentator Josh Barnett left the announce booth and went to confront White who ran away before Barnett was held back by the referee. This was NOT a planned spot/angle and Barnett was legit hot at the spot. Ross was injured enough that he had to cancel a few appearances this coming weekend due to the injury.

    - Both White and Robinson did in fact apologize to Ross after the show. It was obviously an accident as they did not intend to injure Ross nor even make him fall down. It was a heat of the moment spot. Barnett felt otherwise hence why he went after White. Cooler heads prevailed in the end and all sides are now ok.

    - The show drew about 7,000 people total which was impressive considering the high ticket prices. It was a success as they made a decent amount of money but they were hoping for a sellout. No word on the total amount but it may have surpassed the record holding gate of WWE No Way Out 2004 where Eddie Guerrero captured the WWE title from Brock Lesnar. That show drew about 9,000 paid with 11,000 in attendance but ticket prices for the show were considerably less meaning that New Japan may be the new record holder when the final count is done.

    - New Japan revealed at the press conference for the Cow Palace show that they will be running a show on September 30th in Long Beach California at the Walter Pyramid titled “Fighting Spirit Unleashed”. That isn’t the only stop for NJPW in the U.S. however as they plan on running two shows in Anaheim California on November 10th and 11th called “The Lions Break” and will likely be smaller shows featuring the “Young Lions” of the promotion.

    - Following the Long Beach shows, New Japan does plan on running more in the U.S. in 2019 however they do plan on moving away from California in an effort to expand their market. One would think that Chicago and New York would be two locations for them to run. Also maybe Philadelphia.

    - The annual G-1 Climax tournament begins tomorrow from Tokyo. Some great matches scheduled for this week including Hiroshi Tanahashi vs. Minoru Suzuki taking place tomorrow; Kenny Omega vs. Tetsuya Naito taking place on Sunday and. Kota Ibushi vs. Zack Sabre Jr. also on Sunday

    - New Japan announced last night that Rey Mysterio will be returning for the final G1 Climax show on August 12th although no opponent has been named. This may be Mysterio’s final New Japan show since he is expected to sign and begin with the WWE soon.

    - The latest regarding the allegations made by former ROH Female star Taeler Hendrix had both ROH and Jay Lethal release statements on the subject. ROH COO Joe Koff noted: "We were troubled to hear the allegations that surfaced last night on Twitter. We take these matters very seriously and will be investigating this situation thoroughly, reviewing all evidence related to the matter. Ring of Honor strives to provide an environment and workplace where male and female wrestlers are free from any misconduct or abuse. We will take appropriate action upon the conclusion of our findings." and Lethal released a statement of his own noting: "Let me be clear, there is absolutely no validity to these baseless allegations. Throughout my career I have sought to conduct myself with honor and integrity. I would never engage in any conduct that disrespects this business or the men and women in this industry. Every individual has a right to be heard and must be given every opportunity to speak truth to power. Anyone engaging in misconduct or abuse of any kind simply has no place in our business or our society. I am confident that these unfortunate allegations will be proven to be completely unfounded at the conclusion of Ring of Honor's investigation.". As I have stated, I have known Jay for a long time now and this would be 100% out of character for him. He is one of the most humble and respectful people I have ever met so these allegations come as a complete surprise. I just hope that the investigation is thorough and complete and whatever the outcome, I hope that all involved get a fair shake.

    - It is noteworthy however to point out that Hendrix was never under contract to ROH and in fact was working on a per appearance basis and she in fact was booked for more events past April 2017 but resigned from the promotion.

    - Hendrix also released some text messages from Lethal but they didn’t say anything noteworthy. The text messages said: “Taeler, it’s me Jay, are you busy.” And “Hey Taeler, I really need to talk to you. Please let me know when you have a moment to talk. Please.” I really don’t understand what the point of releasing these messages was because it doesn’t prove or show anything other than the fact that Lethal one day had something to discuss with her.

    - I will emphasize that fans should NOT act like d*ckheads as Hendrix worked an independent show last Friday in San Antonio Texas and was heckled by members of the crowd who were chanting Jay Lethal at her. Don’t be assh*les please.

    - An interesting tweet came from the head of talent relations for Impact, Sonjay Dutt when he tweeted: “Slander. F*cking Insane. Batsh*t Crazy.” but didn’t note what he was specifically referencing and didn’t answer any follow up tweets from fans asking him what was up.

    - ROH announced that their annual “Glory By Honor” show will return to Baltimore Maryland where they just held their “Best in the World” PPV two weeks ago. The show will take place on October 13th and will be streamed live on Honor Club.

    - Jonathan Gresham was added to the ROH “Honor Re-United” tour in August. He will be a part of the 8 man tournament with the winner challenging Jay Lethal for the ROH title on August 19th.

    - In addition to Gresham, other participants in the tournament are:

  • Christopher Daniels
  • Jimmy Havoc
  • Joe Hendry
  • Kip Sabian
  • Hangman Page

  • - Johnny Storm and Jodi Fleisch’s matches have been announced for the shows. They will take on The Briscoes in Doncaster on August 18th and The Young Bucks in London on August 19th.

    - Viper formerly known as Piper Niven in The WWE Mae Young Classic will make her Women of Honor debut in her home country of Scotland on August 16th. No opponent has been named.

    - Congrats by the way to ROH as they are doing record numbers this year and are set to break their one year attendance number as well as profit margin. They are well on their way to achieving the biggest financial year in company history as they are averaging attendance of 1400 people per show as opposed to last year’s 1100 per show. If you go back to 2012, they were only averaging 600 per show.

    - With all the hullaballoo about Madison Square Garden reneging on ROH to host a show there, it has come out that WWE also has an agreement with the Staples Center in Los Angeles to have the right of first refusal on wrestling shows being held in the arena.

    - Cody and the Bucks continue to make things interesting for “All In” as it was announced that Flip Gordon will challenge for the NWA Title at Ring of Honor’s July 20th show next Friday in Nashville against champion Nick Aldis. Currently Cody is booked to challenge for the title at “All In” on September 1st. But if Flip wins the championship, he will likely take Aldis’ place meaning he will be booked on “All In” despite Cody’s constant efforts to keep him off the show. The show will stream live on “Honor Club”.

    - With “All In” announcing their first match last week in Kazuchika Okada vs. Marty Scurll, Chris Jericho announced his first match for the Rock & Wrestling Rager cruise in October as Scurll will be going one on one with Sami Callihan.

    - The latest episode of BEING THE ELITE with the aftermath of the G1 Special at the Cow Palace.

    - A new mystery promotion titled “Dojo Pro” has launched with a streaming show on Amazon Prime. The show, which will be partnered with Ring of Honor, will feature a new take on pro wrestling running a 13 person gauntlet. Eric Bischoff is one of the executive producers of the show. The gauntlet will crown a Dojo Pro Black Belt as well as a title shot for the ROH Television title. All 12 episodes, one match each, are available for immediate binge watching now to all Amazon Prime members. Such wrestlers included in the Gauntlet are Joey Janela, James Storm, Shane Strickland and Jeff Cobb.

    - If you get the chance, check out the Rich Swann vs. Fenix match from last week’s episode of Impact. Great stuff.

    - In news that personally disappoints me since I selfishly want her in WWE, Tessa Blanchard has signed a “long term” contract with Impact Wrestling. Blanchard, one of the best in ring women wrestlers NOT in WWE is only 22 years old. She is also the longtime girlfriend of NXT star Ricochet. The belief is that the deal is for 2 years. So she will still be relatively young when he contract is up. I honestly had no idea that she was only 22. That is insane because she wrestles way older than her age.

    - Very hot angle on Impact with Konnan and Eddie Kingston to start the LAX vs. LAX feud. Konnan is very underrated when it comes to creative and is one of the few old school guys who is always looking to elevate younger talent while still understanding the need for older talent on shows hence the success he has had booking AAA and then the Crash in Mexico. It is such a shame that he doesn’t get the same opportunity here in the U.S. to helm the creative of a big promotion. Anyway, Santana and Ortiz are super talented and can only learn and get better from working a feud with Homicide and Hernandez.

    - Speaking of “Da Notorious 187” Homicide, he has been booked against PCO on the July 19th MLW show in Queens New York which I will in fact be attending. That is going to be some hard hitting, strong style fun. Also confirmed for that show is Brody King wrestling under the name King Brody against Jimmy Havoc.

    - MLW has also announced that they are going be doing a “WAR GAMES” match on September 6th in Fort Lauderdale Florida. MLW President Court Bauer noted that he actually holds the intellectual property for the match and MLW has actually done War Games a match back in 2003.

    - In what was an absolute troubling story, wrestling GOD Danny Hodge was reported missing in Perry Oklahoma last Saturday. Hodge, who suffers from dementia, left his home around 5:30 pm local time on Saturday and drove away in his car. He was found several hours later in Tulsa Oklahoma which is around 90 miles away. His family feared that he was in “imminent danger of serious bodily injury or death” due to his dementia and being behind the wheel of a car. They worried that he wouldn’t be able to find his way home and may accidently injure himself. Thankfully he was found and returned home safely.

    - Longtime Pro Wrestling NOAH GHC Champion and former Ring of Honor Heavyweight Champion Takeshi Morishima announced that he will be returning to wrestling following a 3 year absence which was caused by doctors noting he had abnormally high glycated hemoglobin which could have led to type 1 diabetes. He never had a retirement bout although one was once scheduled by NOAH only to be cancelled. Morishima disappeared from the business following his “retirement” and his return, for Riki Choshu’s event called Genesis on October 15th will be his first association with wrestling since April 2015. Morishima when he retired was weighing in around 320 lbs. but is now around 270 lbs. although there are claims that at one point during his retirement he was hovering around 240 lbs.

    - Despite losing L.A. Park for the next several weeks as he has been the main draw since his return, CMLL did their biggest crowd of the year with over 12,000 fans to Arena Mexico to see the debut of Penta OM. This shows you that fans are 100% into all the new influx of talent coming to the company and this truce between CMLL and AAA is working for the benefit of everyone.

    - CMLL is also working with The Crash promotion which is a big deal because they originally weren’t allowing their talent to work there.

IMPACT WRESTLING “SLAMMIVERSARY PPV” is on Sunday, July 22nd, 2018 from Toronto Canada and the line-up is as follows:

  • IMPACT TITLE: Austin Aries © vs. Moose
  • HAIR VS. MASK MATCH: Sami Callihan vs. Pentagon
  • Johnny Impact vs. Rich Swann vs. Taiji Ishimori vs. Fenix
  • MMA News and Notes:

    - History was once again made in UFC as UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Daniel Cormier became only the 2nd person in company history to successfully hold two titles in two different weight classes as he knocked out UFC Heavyweight Champion Stipe Miocic in spectacular and decisive fashion to win the title. He then proceeded to cut one hell of a promo calling out current WWE Universal Champion and former UFC Heavyweight Champion Brock Lesnar to the octagon which Brock happily obliged and then shoved Cormier causing a pull apart. Brock then cut a promo which was light years better than anything he has cut in WWE solidifying a future matchup between the two that will set all sorts of records for UFC as Brock is a proven draw.

    - According to Dana White and later confirmed by USADA, Lesnar submitted his name to USADA for drug testing last week and thus they are targeting a January date for him vs. Cormier. USADA revealed in their statement: "After receiving notice of his intent to compete in the UFC, Brock Lesnar re-entered the testing pool on July 3. With six months and four days remaining on his period of ineligibility, Lesnar will be able to compete on or after January 8, 2019, should he remain in compliance with the UFC Anti-Doping Policy."

    - Cormier made $500,000 base for the fight and Miocic made $750,000. Both however get PPV points so both will clear $1,000,000 when the dust settles.

    - With Cormier not fighting Lesnar until 2019, he revealed that he may in fact defend the Light Heavyweight title before then. I personally don’t think that is a good idea. He came into the Miocic fight at 245 lbs. and probably went into the cage at close to 255 or more. Cutting down to 205 shouldn’t be done at his age.

    - Alexander Gustafsson said Cormier needs to fight him for the Light Heavyweight title or he should vacate it. Big words by Gustafsson but he has a fight coming up.

    - That all may be a moot point anyway as Cormier revealed he in fact broke his knuckle stopping Miocic so he may be disabled for a few months. Cormier will NOT require surgery but he can’t train for a few months either.

    - Cormier did in fact reveal that he felt faster at Heavyweight than he does at Light Heavyweight and not having to go through a weight cut was better for him.

    - Early estimates on buy rate for UFC 226 are disappointing so far with the show tracking to just under 400,000 PPV buys. Damn.

    - Despite missing weight by almost 2 lbs. and looking incredibly HUGE against Anthony Pettis last Saturday night, Pettis still managed to tap out a much larger Michael Chiesa in what was Pettis’ best performance in YEARS. Not only did Cheisa lose the fight but he was also forced to forfeit 30% of his purse to Pettis.

    - Cheisa revealed that he felt like he was going to die during his weight cut for this show.

    - Max Holloway released a statement following his removal from UFC 226 last weekend noting: “It was what it was. Respect to Ortega and his team. Thank you @danawhite and the @UFC staff for making my health priority. Also thank you to @lilheathenmma and @frankieedgar for being about that champ life and stepping up. I see you. To all the fans I know this rollercoaster can be frustrating because my team is also on it with you. All I can say is I’m truly sorry and I hope you guys stay buckled in because it is far from being over. Don’t let the bad surprises distract you from the good surprises in this great sport. The best is still blessed #blessyourself”

    - Holloway also sent a separate tweet out to Michael Bisping as Bisping is the one who noticed Holloway’s strange behavior in an interview which is what caused the fight against Brian Ortega to be scrapped. Holloway said: “Thank you for being a true friend and calling me out on TV. This fight game breaks when champs can’t be checked”

    - Dana White noted that there is no timetable for Holloway’s return. He said that some people are debating whether they are concussion related or due to his weight cut but either way, he was shelving Holloway until the issue is resolved. He also believes that it was in fact due to weight cutting and that Holloway should move up to 155 and vacate the featherweight title for his own health.

    - Francis Ngannou vs. Derrick Lewis was one of the worst fights in UFC history. Ngannou apologized after the fight for it being so terrible.

    - Paul Felder broke his arm in his split decision loss against Mike Perry last weekend.

    - Jon Jones manager revealed this week that he expects a decision to be made regarding Jones situation with USADA by the end of July. It is incredible that it took a full year for any sort of resolution to come out of his drug test failure and considering he provided NO DEFENSE of his failure and when he appeared before the California State Athletic Commission, his defense was that he “didn’t know he took steroids” and the commission revoked his fighting license but did NOT suspend him. USADA, which usually grants the suspensions did NOT make a ruling on it and while Jones has been out a full year already, has never been officially suspended by anyone. I’d be completely shocked if he was allowed to fight anytime soon since he should have received a minimum of a FOUR YEAR suspension since it wasn’t his first offense. But funnier things have happened in combat sports. His being allowed to return would be a slap in the face to the USADA program, UFC and athletic commissions everywhere. It would also affect both the Light Heavyweight and Heavyweight title pictures because even though Brock Lesnar vs. Daniel Cormier for the Heavyweight title is a big one, Lesnar vs. Jones will make Lesnar more money and be the bigger fight of the two. Plus, a one year suspension for a 2nd offense based on the defense of “I didn’t know I took anything” would open the floodgates for people who fail tests and anything more than a one year suspension since PED’s is an automatic 2 year ban would open up USADA to lawsuits since it was Jones 2nd offense.

    - Amazingly enough, despite not going before the athletic commission even though it has been over a year since his failure, it has been revealed that Jon Jones has NOT been drug tested once in the last 6 months by USADA.

    - Another champion vs. champion fight has been signed as Cris “Cyborg” Justino vs. Amanda Nunes has been agreed on. Cyborg has signed the deal and Nunes has verbally agreed. With a Nunes win, she would become the 3rd person to hold two titles in two separate weight classes in UFC history with Conor McGregor and Daniel Cormier being the others. I do believe that Nunes has the tools other than her size to beat Cyborg. Especially since Holly Holm was able to take Cyborg to the 5th round.

    - Even though UFC has put up the TUF house for sale in Las Vegas, there are plans for one FINAL season of The Ultimate Fighter planned as UFC Middleweight Champion Robert Whitaker and Kelvin Gastelum are set to coach what is believed to be the FINAL season of the show and then face off against each other either at UFC 231 on December 8th in Toronto Canada or at at UFC 232 on December 29th in Las Vegas Nevada. The theme is that both Whitaker and Gastelum are former winners of the show in the past which is why Gastelum was selected for the title shot over Chris Weidman. The season will consist of eight male heavyweights and eight female featherweights.

    - Khabib Nurmagomedov has noted that he wants to fight either Conor McGregor or George St. Pierre next but if neither of those fights materializes, he is willing to fight the winner of Eddie Alvarez vs. Dustin Poirier instead.

    - Nick Diaz is claiming that he is being framed for his domestic violence charge against him by a spurned ex-girlfriend. That doesn’t seem to coincide with the police’s theory because following a hearing on Tuesday in Las Vegas, two more felony charges have been filed against Diaz in addition to the one felony and one misdemeanor he was already facing. He has been charged with “felony battery constituting domestic violence by strangulation” and “felony battery violence resulting in substantial bodily harm”. Not for nothing but I highly doubt police would add additional charges against him if the initial charges were false or suspect. This isn’t good for Diaz.

    - Felony battery charges against Volkan Oezdemir stemming from a barroom brawl months ago have been dropped due to lack of cooperation from the alleged victim.

    - Yoel Romero is considering moving up from Middleweight to Light Heavyweight. He wants a shot at Daniel Cormier and the Light Heavyweight title but in all honesty, Cormier has legit two fights left on his fight card before he officially retires. Those fights are Brock Lesnar and Jon Jones. If one of those doesn’t pan out, I could see him fighting Stipe Miocic in a rematch or a potential fight with stablemate and best friend Cain Velasquez. Other than that, I don’t think he is going to go back to Light Heavyweight and I don’t see any “name” on the horizon at heavyweight that he should fight.

    - Greg Hardy is looking to up his UFC record to 2 – 0 as he will be back on the “Dana White Contender Series” show on August 7th against Tebaris Gordon. With a win, he will likely be bumped from “The Contenders” to a normal UFC show.

    - Former UFC star Brendan Schaub and UFC President Dana White have been in a war of words via social media in the past two days. Schaub however revealed this little notable tidbit in that he ended one of his rants saying: “This is also no way for Eskimo Brothers to be talking to one another.” For those of you who don’t know what Eskimo Brothers are two guys who knowingly slept with the same girl (thus referring to her vagina as an igloo, get it?). For those who do not know, Schaub was previously linked for Ronda Rousey before Rousey hooked up with her current husband Travis Browne. So Schuab is insinuating that he knows that Dana did so as well. WOWSERS.

    - In an interesting note on the UFC television deal that was recently reached, WME-IMG president Ari Emanuel did in fact have a meeting with Viacom about television rights and a possible deal. That is interesting since Viacom OWNS Bellator MMA.

    - Bellator announced that Matt Mitrione vs. Ryan Bader in the semi-finals of the Heavyweight Grand Prix will take place on October 12th at Mohegan Sun in Connecticut. My bet is that the winner of this fight will win the tournament.

UFC ON FOX is on Saturday, July 28th, 2018 from Calgary Alberta Canada and the line-up is as follows:

  • Eddie Alvarez vs. Dustin Porier
  • Jose Aldo vs. Jeremy Stephens
  • Joanna Jedrzejczyk vs. Tecia Torres
  • UFC 227 is on Saturday, August 4th, 2018 from Los Angeles California and the line-up is as follows:

  • UFC BANTAMWEIGHT TITLE: T.J. Dillashaw © vs. Cody Garbrandt
  • UFC FLYWEIGHT TITLE: Demetrious Johnson © vs. Henry Cejudo
  • Alexander Gustafsson vs. Volkan Oexdemir
  • Cub Swanson vs. Renato Moicano
  • Polyanna Vianna vs. JJ Aldrich
  • UFC 228 is on Saturday, September 8th, 2018 from TBD and the line-up is as follows:

  • Yair Rodriquez cs. Zabit Magomedsharipov
  • Jimmie Rivera vs. John Dodson

    - BONUS Random ARTICLE of the week PART 1: This will be the new barometer to see if the NFL is serious about domestic violence issues with their players. If he is in fact guilty of setting her up to be robbed and beaten then he needs to be kicked out of the league. Holy sh*t was she beaten terribly.

    - BONUS Random ARTICLE of the week PART 6: Scumbag took the easy way out. Piece of sh*t.

    - BONUS Random ARTICLE of the week PART 8: Look at this f*cking “tough guy”. He helps kill an innocent 15 year old and now threatening correction officer. I will never understand people like this. It isn’t cool to throw your life away. You’re not a “bad ass” behind bars for life. No one is going to respect or fear you in prison buddy AND…to top that off, someone is going to get to you eventually. You’re in protective custody now while you await trial. Eventually that is going to come to an end dude.

    - BONUS Random ARTICLE of the week PART 9: Literally this was a few blocks away from where I live. Hooray for the Bronx!!! SMH. Although it does tell you that I live in a nice neighborhood if mobsters plant roots here. So go me!!

    - BONUS Random ARTICLE of the week PART 10: Not everyone knows this story although they should, especially minorities. This is a f*cking HUGE deal that this case was reopened and while those who were responsible for Till’s death are dead, it is good to know that he was innocent and that it will in fact be ruled a murder.

    - “Ant-Man & The Wasp”, solid Marvel film and extremely funny but it was a mid-tier movie. No better or no worse than part 1. The after credits scene however….WOW; that was great stuff. The film doesn’t make my top 5 Marvel films, probably not my top 8. I would need a 2nd viewing to get a better placement of it on the chart.

    - The future Marvel Cinematic Universe “Black Widow” film has landed a director in Cate Shortland. It has been confirmed by the Hollywood Reporter that the film is in fact a prequel and will take place BEOFRE the events of the 1st Avengers film and tell the story of how the former Russian spy becomes a super hero.

    - It has been confirmed that actor Billy Dee Williams will reprise his role as Lando Calrissian for Star Wars: Episode IX. That’s awesome. I just wish he could have had a scene with Han Solo and Princess Leia.

    - Tommy is really digging a deep hole for himself, Ghost and Kanan on “Power” huh? Jesus H. Christ dude, just stop thinking. There is a reason why Ghost ran things on the business end while you ran the street side of it. WTF bro?

    - In “GODDAMNIT MOTHER F*CKING F*CK” news: According to the Hollywood Reporter, a Fox shareholder has filed a lawsuit that could potentially derail the Fox/Disney merger in an attempt to stop the acquisition. “The lawsuit alleges that a proxy statement filed on June 28 omits or misrepresents the company's financial projections and the data underlying financial valuation analyses from Goldman Sachs and Centerview Partners. The complaint further contends that Goldman's potential conflicts of interest have not been adequately disclosed.”

    - Disney made it official that the 5th Indiana Jones film starring Harrison Ford has been pushed from 2020 to 2021. While I am actually believing that this film is going to have potential since Steven Spielberg is returning to helm the film, I cannot imagine waiting till Harrison Ford is 79 YEARS OLD for the movie to come out. WTF?

    - Apparently the upcoming season of CW’s “Arrow” will be based on a concept that was originally created for a potential Green Arrow movie titled “Supermax” which was in development before the DCEU was created with the intent of creating their own universe in films. In the concept, Oliver Queen was to be imprisoned in a supermax facility and come across the likes of MAJOR villains in the DC universe including the Joker and Lex Luthor. Obviously he won’t come across those villains next season but will spend some considerable time there and the show will likely introduce new villains to the show.

    - Actor Joaquin Phoenix has sealed his deal to play an iteration of the Joker for a stand-alone origin film for Warner Bros.

    - Congrats to G.L.O.W. as season 2 viewership was HIGHER than season 1 viewership and in the key demographic of 18 – 49 year olds, has the highest viewership of any streaming content on Netflix. WOW. They also received 10 Emmy award nominations yesterday including the MAJOR nomination for Outstanding Comedy Series.

    - In other MAJOR Emmy news, actress Julia Louis-Dreyfus was NOT nominated for an Emmy for best lead actress in a comedy series. It is significant because she has won six straight awards since 2012.

    - I’m a big fan of the Mission Impossible series and early reviews are leaking online due to previews and not only is it being claimed that it is the best MI film ever but some reviews have noted that it may be the best ACTION MOVIE ever in terms of action scenes. That is incredibly impressive if true. .
