T.G.I.F. with Matt Dawgs: #405

Good day to you all and welcome to We Want Insanity. I am your host for today, Matt Dawgs and this is my column. Today is the end of the work week and the time to look back at all the goings-on over the past seven days as I wrap it up with a bow and spout it out bit by bit. Buckle up. Enjoy the ride.

IMPORTANT MATT NOTE:: I don’t normally request much but as some of you who follow me on social media may know, I have a 7 year old cousin who is currently battling an aggressive form of cancer called neuroblastoma which effects 700 kids annually in the United States. He is a warrior who is fighting this with more strength than adults show. If possible, can you please take the time to donate to help him and his parents financially through this battle. If not, I understand. At least take a minute to copy the link from here and post it on your social media. Perhaps one of your friends or family members would be willing to donate. No set amount being asked for. Whatever you can afford. As little as $1 if that is all you can contribute. Everything helps. As of now, they are responsible for only 20% of his medical bills to date. That may not seem like a lot but when his year to date bills have already surpassed $1,000,000 and they owe 20% of that, well you get the picture. So please, if you can. Thanks.

BONUS MATT NOTE: In a story that will almost certainly effect WWE and MMA and absolutely put an end to ANY AND ALL talk of Daniel Bryan making an in ring WWE return, a study performed by the famed CTE team at Boston University conducted tests on 202 former NFL players who donated their brains for CTE research post-mortem have found that 99% of the 202 players were POSITIVE in having CTE. That is an ungodly number that is going to be a HUGE negative against the NFL and any concussion lawsuits against them.

- WWE reporting their quarterly earnings yesterday and my cousin, former WWI contributor Chucky Val is going to love this one…..they set the company revenue record for a quarter with $214 million in revenue and $5.1 million in profits. A significant portion of that is not only due to Mania but due to less original programming on the WWE Network meaning that they aren’t churning out as many new shows like “Swerved” and other shows and using more of their library to create content. They also made a profit on PPV and the Network of $1.3 million which is incredible because the Network and PPV LOST $8.3 million from the same time one year ago.

- WWE presented their Smackdown “Battleground” PPV on Sunday and it was by far the worst WWE PPV of the year. Not even close to being remotely good as there was nothing remotely good on the show. Even A.J. Styles defending the U.S. title against Kevin Owens was a major disappointment in that the finish was switched literally during the show and they did a weird looking pin that made Styles look ridiculously dumb for not attempting to kick out as the referee gave the slowest count in wrestling history. I am not sure why the finish was changed but speculation was that Vince saw all the betting that took place 90 minutes before the show when heavy bets were set for Styles and decided to change the plans.

- Shinsuke Nakamura had what had to be one of his worst matches EVER against Baron Corbin that ended in a lame DQ finish. Look, I get it. They don’t want to have Nakamura lose yet but Baron is their guy who they want to push. That is all well and good. The problem is, why book them in a feud then? It makes no sense if you don’t want either guy to do a job yet. SMH.

- Then to top off matters, they rematch it on Smackdown Live with a CLEAN FINISH?!?!?!?! Why just not do the clean finish the night before and not give a rematch on Smackdown?

- The Punjabi Prison match was exactly what you expected it to be. You have to give props to WWE though for trotting out The Great Khali and no, I am not joking. I am not saying I am looking forward to Great Khali matches but if you want to get Jinder over in India then aligning him with Khali is the way to go as Khali is HUGE in India. Plus it gives Orton an “out” and protected him from losing clean. Look, I am in on Jinder being champion. I said I get it. He is improving in the ring and his is settling into the gimmick nicely. It won’t kill the WWE to let him get a run with the ball.

- The Khali appearance was a one-time deal. He is not expected back full time and will likely work for WWE once they eventually tour India.

- I am assuming Nattie winning the title shot is a way for WWE to hype “Total Divas”? Not that I am against it. She deserves the opportunity. But the way the booking was going, you had to assume they were going with either Becky or Charlotte at Summerslam.

- RAW on Monday was a solid show albeit long with the main event of Summerslam being made. Brock Lesnar will defend the WWE Universal title in a Fatal Four Way match against Samoa Joe, Roman Reigns and Braun Strowman. My gut tells me that this is WWE’s way of getting the title off of Brock without having Brock lose. I really hope they put the title on Samoa Joe as he has been unmatched in his current run by any of the above mentioned names; so much so that the crowd is 100% behind him despite him being a heel. His mic work has been second to only Paul Heyman in this angle and light years better than Brock, Roman and Strowman. He has also been booked legit like a bad ass and it has worked.

- Bayley is now #1 contender to the RAW Women’s title and will face Alexa Bliss at Summerslam. This was a curve ball as originally the plan was for a Bayley vs. Sasha Banks rematch from their epic NXT Brooklyn match from 2 years ago that stole the weekend.

- Side note: Sunday marked exactly one year from Bayley’s debut on the main roster. Go back and watch her debut on the Network and then go watch her entrance on RAW on Monday and tell me if you spot the difference in crowd reaction. Go ahead, I will wait.

- Poor Enzo. Guy can’t catch a break. Not only did he get squashed by Big Cass again but he was sort of punked by Big Show. It was amazing to watch as Cass threatened Show by telling him that he better not come into the ring or else he’d break Enzo’s neck only for Show to completely ignore Cass’ demand and walk right into the ring. LOL.

- Finn Balor lost to Elias Sampson due to Bray Wyatt and will now move onto a feud with Wyatt. Yay. That yay was sarcasm by the way. At least it will lead to the “Demon” Balor returning at Summerslam. You know, because he NEEDS the Demon to fight a monster, etc.

- Would they hurry the f*ck up and break the Hardy’s already?

- I still don’t get this Ambrose/Rollins thing. It’s NOT a Shield reunion without Roman. And Roman and Dean has had that reunion moment already. You need all 3 of them to be a reunion. The Beatles aren’t the Beatles if it was just John and Ringo. If Raekwon and Ghostface Killa made an album together, it wouldn’t be a Wu-Tang Clan album; it would be Raekwon and Ghostface. So WWE needs to stop teasing a Shield reunion without the 3rd member of the Shield.

- This Jason Jordan as Kurt Angle’s son thing is DEAD in the water. The crowd has totally turned against it. I assume WWE expected that but it is difficult because you can’t make Jordan go heel if Angle is a babyface and it is too soon to turn Angle.

- Props to Kurt though as he is ALL IN on this angle and is really trying his best to play his part. It is just too bad it sucks on so many levels.

- Jordan did look good in the ring though so that is a plus.

- I will be EXTREMELY disappointed if next week’s Triple Threat does not end with Brock Lesnar coming out and DESTROYING everyone.

- Chris Jericho is BACK!!! It was a pleasant surprise when he came out to confront Kevin Owens to start off Smackdown. Hopefully he is back for a while and it wasn’t a one off.

- The three way U.S. Title match between Owens/A.J./Jericho was excellent. Glad A.J. got the title back too although that makes his loss at Battleground all the more confusing.

- Under NO CIRCUMSTANCES should John Cena wrestle Shinsuke Nakamura on FREE TV with a one week build. Look, I get it. PPV is pretty much meaningless so no need to build for that since they aren’t making money off it even though Cena vs. Nakamura is HUGE. But their 1st encounter should be built. That is all I am saying. It shouldn’t be mentioned on TV, talked about for 5 minutes and then forgotten about until it happens. It should be a several week build especially if you are going to give it away for free. Hype it to make it seem like a HUGE deal and get extra ratings for it.

- In addition to Cena/Nakamura, next week will also feature A.J. defending the U.S. title against Kevin Owens.

- So the Hardy’s legal drama has hit a snag as Reby Hardy went on a TIRADE on Twitter again with Matt noting that the sets alone for the “Final Deletion” cost them $2,500 and Matt, Jeff and Reby built the entire set by themselves. So the assumption is that Anthem is causing the delays.

- In a funny bit of news, someone tweeted that Mike Kanellis was a joke in TNA and is in WWE to which Mike replied: “The difference is that I get paid for it now.” Matt Hardy then chimed in and said: “It is truly DELIGHTFUL to get your check every week, on time, without having to chase it for weeks.” OUCH.

- WWE Hall of Famer Shawn Michaels will be on the road with NXT this weekend touring as a road agent/producer for the brand. They will be touring Green Bay, Minneapolis and Milwaukee.

- WWE COO Triple H celebrated his 48th birthday yesterday.

- Also a Happy Birthday to Roderick Strong as he turned 34 this week.

- Thea Trinidad has officially been renamed. She will now be known as Zelina Vega.

- Apparently Renee Young falls into the John Cena boat and is a free agent as she is going to be allowed to be on both RAW and Smackdown Live each week.

- #SmackingTalk debuted on TOUT (Remember Tout? LOL) following Smackdown this week with Daniel Bryan and Renee Young as hosts.

- E!’s “Total Bellas” returns on September 6th. This season is built around Nikki Bella and Joh Cena moving to Phoenix to live with Daniel Bryan and Brie Bella so that Nikki and John can help Brie through her pregnancy. Upon the finale, “Total Divas” returns right after.

- Speaking of the Bellas, Brie Bella has informed WWE that she wants to return to in-ring action in 2018 at some point.

- There is strong talk out of WWE that ANOTHERT “Superstar Shake-up” is set for after Summerslam. Even if they don’t do a major one, some names are going to be switching brands. WWE has done it with no rhyme or reason as recently as Jason Jordan just somehow ending up on RAW with no explanation as to how other than he is Kurt Angle’s son.

- There is a rumor floating around that when WWE RAW was in Nashville a few weeks ago, both WWE and GFW talents were at a bar and Karen Jarrett approached Braun Strowman for an autograph/picture for her son who is a big fan. Strowman not knowing who she was apparently blew her off and used some foul language in doing so. Karen then went ballistic on him and informed him who her son’s father is (Kurt Angle) to which Strownman apologized profusely and allegedly got on his knees begging her not to tell Angle.

- The long awaited Ric Flair “30 for 30” documentary is set to debut on November 7th on ESPN.

NXT TAKEOVER BROOKLYN is on Saturday, August 19th, 2017 from Brooklyn New York and the line-up is as follows:

  • NXT TITLE: Bobby Roode © vs. Drew McIntyre
  • NXT WOMEN’S TITLE: Asuka © vs. Ember Moon
  • NXT TAG TEAM TITLES: The Authors of Pain © w/Paul Ellering vs. SanITY
  • Hideo Itami vs. Kassius Ohno
  • WWE SUMMERSLAM is on Sunday, August 20th, 2017 from Brooklyn New York and the line-up is as follows:

  • WWE UNIVERSAL TITLE: Brock Lesnar © w/Paul Heyman vs. Samoa Joe vs. Roman Reigns vs. Braun Strowman
  • WWE RAW WOMEN’S TITLE: Alexa Bliss © vs. Bayley
  • WWE SMACKDOWN WOMEN’S TITLE: Naomi © vs. Natalya

    - It is believed that Alberto El Patron will be reinstated effective immediately as the Orlando Police Department have cleared him of all charges regarding his domestic incident with Paige at Orlando airport a few weeks back. Paige is still being investigated and the Orlando States Attorney may be pressing charges against her. Despite being suspended by Global Force Wrestling, El Patron did not miss any television time as the episodes currently airing were filmed before his suspension and he had taped all of his episodes.

    - GFW is getting into a stick situation involving the ownership rights of the “Broken” Hardy’s. Since they broke off negotiations, Anthem’s Ed Nordholm did an interview with Sporets Illustrated in which he claimed that Matt Hardy tried to hold Anthem up for more money upon their last negotiations to stay with then Impact prior to returning to WWE before Mania. Nordholm says that Matt asked for $100,000 more per year at the last minute which Nordholm declined and told him to go to WWE. Matt Hardy however is claiming that this is a lie and both he and his wife Reby Hardy claim that Matt taped all of their conversations including that one and under no circumstances did Matt ask for more money.

    - Moose has signed a 3-year extension to stay with GFW.

    - Davey Richards has requested and been granted his release from GFW. He noted that his lifelong dream is to become a doctor and was never wrestling. He said he is closer than ever to accomplishing that and while he still plans on taking some independent bookings over the next few months; they will be less and less. He also passed his test to be an in-flight paramedic on airlines.

    - In a sleaze move but it is what it is, when GFW uses their old Jeff Jarrett GFW shows as “One Night Only” PPV’s, they are advertising them by noting that Bobby Roode will be attending and they are wondering what he is doing there. If they decide to re-do commentary for the shows, they can claim that the NXT champion is there and when he loses in the tournament, they can mention that as well. LOL.

    - James Storm was not used at the last set of tapings hence why he isn’t on TV because he suffered a concussion. He is expected back next tapings.

Ring of Honor / Lucha Underground / Independent / International News and Notes:

    - So despite backstabbing his fiancé, Johnny Mundo a.k.a. John Morrison is apparently turning it into an angle with AAA. Mundo showed up at their show this weekend at an independent show in Mexico and threw his 3 AAA title belts at Vampiro and teased appearing at the next AAA show. He is going to “do business” and work Triplemania” to drop his titles.

    - For those who asked, no, I do NOT keep track of the G-1 Tournament. I have way too much to watch as it is but I will watch specific matches one off if I am told that I need to go out of my way to see them.

    - Former New Japan legend Hiroshi Hase returned to wrestling this week at age 56 for the first time in 11 years to work for Kenji Mutoh’s “Pro Wrestling Matters” promotion in Japan. It is not a full time comeback. It was just a one off match. Hase and Muta were one of my favorite tag teams growing up. Go watch some of their old work. Fantastic.

    - Not sure if this means anything or not but Mesias has been working independent shows using his Lucha Underground name of Mil Muertes.

    MMA News and Notes:

    - In an interesting note since tomorrow is his return to UFC, Dana White noted in an interview earlier this week that he has not personally spoken to Jon Jones since he was removed from UFC 200 last July. Jones confirmed this by noting that when everything was going down with him last year, Dana didn’t help him in any way and when someone who is a star of his stature and a draw has something major like that happen, the president of the company should back him. Since he didn’t, he knows where he stands with Dana and now considers Ari Emmanuel his boss and Dana as a figurehead.

    - While on the subject of Jones, former UFC star and current WWE Universal Champion Brock Lesnar revealed to the Associated Press that he would be interested in returning for a fight against Jones in the future.

    - Cutting it close but as of yesterday, Daniel Cormier had 10 lbs. to cut before today’s weigh ins.

    - UFC President Dana White confirmed this week that the winner of the UFC Welterweight Title fight between Tyrone Woodley and Demian Maia tomorrow night will defend the title against George St. Pierre next. GSP is still clamoring for a fight against Michael Bisping. While that fight would be bigger for UFC and draw more, Dana White is adamant that it will be at Welterweight.

    - Universal Pictures is releasing a documentary on Conor McGregor.

    - The much hyped Aaron Pico will be making his return to Bellator following his disappointing 24 second loss in his debut on September 23rd in San Jose. A 2nd loss would be terrible for his career.

    - 50 year old Renzo Gracie is returning to MMA. He is still technically under contract to UFC despite not having fought since 2010 however wants to fight for Bellator and it is likely UFC will let him do so.

UFC 214 is on Saturday, July 29th, 2017 from Anaheim California and the line-up is as follows:

  • UFC LIGHT HEAVYWEIGHT TITLE: Daniel Cormier © vs. Jon Jones
  • UFC WELTERWEIGHT TITLE: Tyrone Woodley © vs. Demian Maia
  • UFC WOMEN’S FEATHERWEIGHT TITLE: Cristiane “Cyborg” Justino vs. Tonya Evinger
  • Robbie Lawler vs. Donald Cerrone
  • Jim Manuwa vs. Volkan Oezdemir
  • Chan Sung Jung a.k.a The Korean Zombie vs. Ricardo Lamas
  • Renan Barao vs. Aljamain Sterling
  • UFC 215 is on Saturday, September 9th, 2017 from Edmonton Alberta Canada and the line-up is as follows:

  • UFC FLYWEIGHT TITLE: Demetrious Johnson © vs. Ray Borg
  • UFC WOMEN’S BANTAMWEIGHT TITLE: Amanda Nunes © vs. Valentina Shevchenko
  • Junior Dos Santos vs. Francis Ngannou
  • Gilbert Melendez vs. Jeremy Stephens
  • Henry Cejudo vs. Wilson Reis

    - BONUS Random ARTICLE of the week: Uh huh. He had NO IDEA what he was transporting. Wink Wink, Nod Nod. No clue at all.

    - BONUS Random ARTICLE of the week PART 1: I would not be surprised if this is the first of a ton of stories like this coming out over the next several years. Either this girl is brain damaged in some way or more than likely we are coming into an age where people are so obsessed with social media that more and more people are going to die while obsessed social media members are more worried about streaming live or getting likes/followers. This is mind blowing to me that she didn’t stop filming.

    - BONUS Random ARTICLE of the week PART 2: If this isn’t the definition of suspect then I don’t know what is. They reported him missing but then don’t immediately cooperate with police when they come to search? Um….that’s a little weird don’t you think?

    - BONUS Random ARTICLE of the week PART 3: There are really some vengeful/hateful/spiteful people out there. This story sickens me.

    - BONUS Random ARTICLE of the week PART 4: He definitely wanted revenge on that warden. Wow.

    - BONUS Random ARTICLE of the week PART 5: War with them is going to be inevitable soon. I just hope the world is prepared for WW3.

    - BONUS Random ARTICLE of the week PART 6:

    - As noted, San Diego Comic Con was last weekend and we have a TON of news coming out of it for both D.C. and Marvel. So enjoy!!

    - Marvel had revealed that Michelle Pfieffer has joined the cast of “Ant Man and the Wasp” as she will be playing Janet Van Dyne a.k.a. the Original Wasp, mother of Hope Van Dyne and wife of Hank Pym.

    - Also, in addition to Walton Goggins as I revealed last week (Who will be playing Sonny Burck the chairman of Cross Industries) it has been revealed that Lawrence Fishburne has made the jump from DC to Marvel as he will be joining the cast as Dr. Bill Foster a.k.a. Goliath from the comics.

    - Captain Marvel will take place in the 1990’s and will co-star Samuel L. Jackson reprising his role of Nick Fury. Fury will have BOTH eyes in the film thus making it take place before he lost an eye and had to wear an eye patch. It is also noteworthy that Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige revealed that the villains in the film will be THE SKRULLS which is interesting because those are supposed to be “Fantastic Four” characters hence why they were not used in the first Avengers film. The movie will be based on the Kree/Skrull Galactic War.

    - The latest “Thor: Ragnarok” trailer was revealed and is posted above in videos. Also the new trailers for both “Black Panther” and “Avengers: Infinity War” both aired although have not been officially released by Marvel yet.

    - Over at Warner Brothers, The latest “Justice League” trailer was released and it looks infinitely better than the first one. I am hoping that Joss Whedon can right the ship but with all the dysfunction over at WB, I am not too hopeful.

    - The did reveal that they finally have a working concept for the “Flash” movie and it will be “Flashpoint” and that they are currently in talks for Jeffrey Dean Morgan to reprise his role as Thomas Wayne from “Batman v. Superman”. That would be awesome with him playing Batman.

    - Speaking of Batman, Ben Affleck denied rumors that he is OUT as Batman and will not be in the role in the film “The Batman”. I personally do not believe him and feel like this is just his and WB’s way of salvaging the backlash that was received when this story broke prior to Comic Con. Obviously you do not want one of your stars with one foot out the door while promoting a blockbuster film project.

    - It is also looking more and more like actor Joe Manganiello will NOT be playing Slade Wilson/Deathstroke in the film and if he is, his role will be significantly reduced.

    - “Power” = AWESOME. Great season so far. Best of the 4 seasons to date.

    - Apparently Discover Channel kicked off “Shark Week” on Sunday by having Michael Phelps race a Great White Shark in a 100 meter swim. People then took to twitter to complain that it was a computer generated simulation. Um….so what I am hearing is that there are people in the United States who actually believed that Discover Channel would take quite possibly the best Olympian in history or at least in our time and let him race a great white shark for real? SMH.

    - The CW aired their San Diego Comic Con panels with their previews of the upcoming season of their shows. In some news:

  • Tom Felton (Julian) will no longer be a regular cast member of the Flash next season. He is not scheduled to be in any episodes as of now but may appear as the season goes on schedule permitting.
  • Flash begins 6 months after the season finale with Barry STILL trapped in the Speed Force
  • Danny Trejo will also be a recurring cast member as Gypsy’s father “Breacher”
  • Manu Bennett will join the cast of Arrow as a recurring cast member and will be featured in episode 1 & 2 of Arrow next year as well as other episodes throughout the season. A flashback episode will also be written for Slade Wilson/Deathstroke at some point.
  • Kate Cassidy (Black Siren) is back on the cast full time for Arrow meaning she will be a main villain all season or she will turn babyface and join team Arrow.
  • Actor Michael Emerson best known for his role as Benjamin Linus on LOST will be a recurring character on Arrow this season. Hopefully as the main villain
  • Kathleen Gati will return as a recurring character on Arrow. This one is a bit weird as she was in the PILOT episode of Arrow as Oliver Queen’s maid and a mother figure to Oliver as she took a lot of care of him when he was younger. Then she randomly disappeared never to be seen again. Now she is back in the same role which is really odd.
  • Both Neal McDonough and Wentworth Miller will both be returning as recurring characters on Legends of Tomorrow as Damein Darhk and Leonard Snart respectively. McDonough will be a series regular meaning he will be one of the main villains for the season.
  • Calista Flockhart will be reprising her role of Cat Grant in the season premiere of Supergirl next season
  • Carl Lumbly joins Supergirl as Martian M’yrnn J’onnz a.k.a. J’onn J’onnz father!!
