T.G.I.F. with Matt Dawgs: #406

Good day to you all and welcome to We Want Insanity. I am your host for today, Matt Dawgs and this is my column. Today is the end of the work week and the time to look back at all the goings-on over the past seven days as I wrap it up with a bow and spout it out bit by bit. Buckle up. Enjoy the ride.

IMPORTANT MATT NOTE:: I don’t normally request much but as some of you who follow me on social media may know, I have a 7 year old cousin who is currently battling an aggressive form of cancer called neuroblastoma which effects 700 kids annually in the United States. He is a warrior who is fighting this with more strength than adults show. If possible, can you please take the time to donate to help him and his parents financially through this battle. If not, I understand. At least take a minute to copy the link from here and post it on your social media. Perhaps one of your friends or family members would be willing to donate. No set amount being asked for. Whatever you can afford. As little as $1 if that is all you can contribute. Everything helps. As of now, they are responsible for only 20% of his medical bills to date. That may not seem like a lot but when his year to date bills have already surpassed $1,000,000 and they owe 20% of that, well you get the picture. So please, if you can. Thanks.

BONUS MATT NOTE: Underwood 2016

- All Brunette Everything. Eva Marie has been wished well in her future endeavors and has mutually agreed to part ways with WWE as of this morning.

- For those who did not catch it, Heyman was being subtle but absolutely confirmed that Brock Lesnar is in talks with UFC. No way does he “threaten” that Brock is leaving and he is going with him if it wasn’t in the conversation. He practically spelled it out without using the letters UFC.

- Bayley suffered a legit shoulder injury during her match with Nia Jax on Monday. Her shoulder swelled significantly following the match and had to be iced. It was not properly evaluated due to the swelling but thankfully it does not look like she will need surgery.

- I really wish they would have went with Bayley vs. Sasha Banks for the title at Summerslam.

- Elias Samson’s name is shown as just “Elias” on the WWE RAW Roster page. He was referred to as only Elias on RAW unless you count Booker T who kept calling him Elias Sampson over and over while Cole just kept calling him Elias. LOL. After commercial though, Booker apparently got the memo.

- Ok, admittedly they got me. I am getting into this Dean Ambrose/Seth Rollins storyline mainly because of how Dean is selling it. He has me convinced that he doesn’t want any part of it and his explanation of why he saved Rollins from a 2 on 1 beatdown at the hands of Sheamus and Cesaro was PURE GOLD. For those who missed it, he told Rollins that he got what he was trying to do by getting beat up by them because he knew it would paint him as a “bad guy” if he didn’t come out and save him and he isn’t a bad guy. Makes sense. I like it.

- I legit thought that when the three-way began at 10:00 pm ET that it was going to go an hour. No way did I think for a second that Big Cass vs. The Big Show would close out RAW. I thought to myself, “Wow, they are really giving this three way a lot of time.”

- Cass’ new music is GOD AWFUL. Ugh.

- Speaking of new music, Rollins “BURN IT DOWN” came out of nowhere no?

- I don’t get this Tozawa/O’Neil angle or where it is going or why I should care.

- For the 6th consecutive week in a row, Enzo Amore has been laid out by Big Cass. So for those of you who keep saying “Why poor Enzo”? THAT is why. Name me another babyface who has been buried at every turn and still managed to get over. Go ahead, I will wait. And please do me a favor and DON’T say Daniel Bryan because he was talked up on commentary as someone important before he was jobbing out before the “yes” movement. Enzo gets BURIED by commentary as well.

- I should also add “Poor Jason Jordan” because this angle is KILLING HIM DEAD and that sucks since he is talented. They just shouldn’t have done it. No one is buying it. The crowd went ballistic for Angle to start the show since they were in Pittsburgh and then they immediately groaned in unison when he mentioned his “son”.

- Over on Smackdown, A.J. Styles defeated Kevin Owens with some controversy as Owens had his shoulder up which will set up their Summerslam rematch with Shane McMahon as referee.

- The other big happening was Shinsuke Nakamura defeating John Cena CLEANLY with an exploder suplex followed by the Kinsasha. The exploder ended up dropping Cena right on his head and neck which absolutely shook Cena up. Nakamura even verbally apologized after the match which was caught on camera and Cena told him not to worry about it. Cena seemed to be fine when the camera stopped rolling as Baron Corbin ran in to attack Nakamura but Cena ran him off including nailing him with an AA through the announce table.

- Booking 101 says that Nakamura wins the title at Summerslam since it will be a super hardcore crowd that backs him completely and then immediately loses to Baron Corbin who cashes in his Money In The Bank briefcase. I hope I am wrong but the writing is kind of on the wall.

- There are rumors circulating that John Cena had the finish changed of his match with Nakamura. The originally booked finish had Baron Corbin interfering to try and lay out Nakamura but accidently causing Cena the match setting up their feud which is next. Cena apparently had that vetoed so that he lost to Nakamura clean which then followed with the post-match angle that aired on the WWE Network at the beginning of 205 Live with Corbin coming out to attack Nakamura only for Cena to brawl with him and put him through a table. If true, major props to Cena for understanding that Nakamura “slipping on a banana peel” to get his title shot was not a great idea and that him losing clean would mean more in the long term.

- I like the Fashion Police stuff but it needs to come to an end already. I want them to reveal who has been against them since the beginning. I am assuming it will be Luke Harper and Erick Rowan.

- Where the hell has Mickie James been? They need women to work and yet keep her off TV and out of the women’s angles.

- Apparently Chris Jericho’s Smackdown appearance was a one-shot as he is not booked for any upcoming television or live events going forward.

- “AWOKEN” Matt Hardy? If so, huge F-U to GFW with this one. LOL. Now if GFW wants to go to court, they’d be battling WWE instead of the Hardy’s. HAHA.

- As of this writing, John Cena is expected to work the RAW brand “No Mercy” PPV on September 24th. No opponent yet but he is going to “switch brands” after Summerslam to build for that match. Remember, he is a free agent and can appear on both brands.

- WWE is advertising John Cena vs. Samoa Joe for the August 27th live event in Tupelo Mississippi. That may be a preview of his No Mercy match.

- Speaking of Cena, congrats to him as he has landed the LEAD role in the “Transformers” spinoff film being built around Bumblebee. That is awesome news for him as it will be his first big budget blockbuster. For those of you thinking Cena will be WWE for Life, think again. He is heading down the path of “Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. Now I surely do not see him being the megastar that The Rock is but honestly, he is a star and has the charisma to be a success in Hollywood. I don’t see him wrestling full time ever again and think his appearances are going to become more and more sporadic until he only shows up for Mania season.

- There is plenty of talk on what to do with Enzo Amore now that he is broken up with Big Cass. The dislike of him backstage is spreading like wildfire as there are a ton of people who are tired of his backstage antics but there is still a ton of money to be made with him since fans love him and he moves a ton of merchandise. It was even discussed on the latest episode of “Bring it to the Table” on the Network with Corey Graves and JBL referencing the bus incident from a few weeks ago and they confirmed it was true. The ideas are either moving him back to NXT where he will help sell tickets to live events and bring the crowd up or moving him to 205 Live since the crowd sleeps through that show since fans don’t care about the cruiserweights other than Neville.

- WWE has re-registered the trademark for “Taboo Tuesday”.

- This year’s “Hell in the Cell” is a Smackdown brand PPV in October. Hopefully we get A.J. Styles vs. Kevin Owens in the Cell.

- Well at least he knows where his bread is buttered. Big Cass did an interview over the weekend where he revealed that his goal as a singles wrestler is to eventually main event WrestleMania against Roman Reigns. Smart man.

- Becky Lynch and Cris “Cyborg” Justino continue to go back and forth at each other via Twitter. I can say with 100% certainty that no way would WWE or UFC allow them to continue to tease something if there wasn’t something in the works; especially Vince. So where there is smoke there is fire.

- And again, WWE doesn’t do anything on television or hype anything without a purpose. The WWE Four Horsewomen vs. Ronda Rousey’s Four Horsewomen is likely leading to something down the line as Jessamyn Duke has begun training with Rocky Romero in Southern California.

- WWE U.K. Champion Pete Dunne will defend his title at a Progress Wrestling show in New York against Jack Gallagher. I just really wish WWE would give their U.K. guys more opportunities and feature them more. I enjoy their work more than the 205 Live roster (minus Neville).

- For the two of you who watch 205 Live, Gallagher showed a never before seen mean streak. I think this is to set him up as a valid challenger to Dunne rather than as a comedy figure he plays on television.

- Heard Gran Metalik returned this week to 205 Live. He lost. To Tony Neese. SMH.

- Former ROH star Kyle O’Reilly made his television NXT debut this week losing to Alistair Black.

- Kairi Sane suffered a concussion and neck injury during the taping of the Mae Young classic. She is expected to be recovered by the time the LIVE finale comes around.

- Despite her neck injury and it being used as an excuse to write her out, Io Shiari returned to Stardom in Japan on the July 30th show and is NOT coming to WWE after all. No idea whether or not it was WWE’s call due to the severity of her neck or if Shiari just got cold feet and changed her mind but she is booked for the August 13th show and their upcoming tournament.

- Donald Nemeth, brother of Dolph Ziggler (Nick Nemeth) pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter, aggravated robbery and kidnapping charges in a botch 2016 robbery that resulted in the death of former marine Joshua Mascol in a Cleveland hotel. He would have faced life in prison if he went to trial so the plea is likely going to allow him some sort of parole.

- WWE has extended their toy licensing deal with Mattel until 2021.

- A new episode of “Table for 3” debuts on August 14th featuring Ric Flair, Sting and Ricky Steamboat.

- The Network will also begin airing “The Kurt Angle Collection” on Monday which will feature his best matches including matches against Shawn Stasiak, Val Venis, Chris Jericho, Rikishi, The Rock, HHH, Shane McMahon, Steve Austin, Edge, Big Show, Brock Lesnar, Eddy Guerrero, Rey Mysterio, Ric Flair, Shelton Benjamin, Randy Orton and more.

NXT TAKEOVER BROOKLYN is on Saturday, August 19th, 2017 from Brooklyn New York and the line-up is as follows:

  • NXT TITLE: Bobby Roode © vs. Drew McIntyre
  • NXT WOMEN’S TITLE: Asuka © vs. Ember Moon
  • NXT TAG TEAM TITLES: The Authors of Pain © w/Paul Ellering vs. SanITY
  • Hideo Itami vs. Alestair Black
  • WWE SUMMERSLAM is on Sunday, August 20th, 2017 from Brooklyn New York and the line-up is as follows:

  • WWE UNIVERSAL TITLE: Brock Lesnar © w/Paul Heyman vs. Samoa Joe vs. Roman Reigns vs. Braun Strowman
  • WWE TITLE: Jinder Mahal © w/The Singh Brothers vs. Shinsuke Nakamura
  • WWE RAW WOMEN’S TITLE: Alexa Bliss © vs. Bayley
  • WWE SMACKDOWN WOMEN’S TITLE: Naomi © vs. Natalya
  • WWE U.S. TITLE: A.J. Styles © vs. Kevin Owens with special referee Shane McMahon
  • WWE SMACKDOWN TAG TEAM TITLES: The New Day © (Big E./Kofi Kingston/Xavier Woods) vs. The Usos (Jimmy & Jey)
  • WWE CRUISERWEIGHT TITLE: Neville © vs. Akira Tozawa w/Titus O’Neil
  • Randy Orton vs. Rusev

    - In what is certainly a hit for GFW, The United States Patent and Trademark office has REFUSED all GFW requests for the “Broken Universe” trademarks. The “Broken Matt” trademark was refused due to Matt Hardy filing it first (which GFW claimed was not true), as well as GFW failed to explain whether or not “Broken Matt” referred to a living person and if so, would require said person’s approval which they will never get. “Brother Nero” was refused for the same reason as “Broken Matt”. GFW failed to dictate whether or not that was meant for a living person.

    - Low-Ki has joined LAX officially on this week’s GFW Impact show. I really wished that they would put Eddie Kingston in this group already and get it over with. I also really wish they had reached out to Monsta Mack and Dan Maff earlier than they did because they’d be the GFW Tag Team Champs right now. Nothing against EYFBO a.k.a. Ortiz and Santana because they are good but I’d much rather have the Hit Squad as champs.

    - Nick “Magnus” Aldis revealed that he was in fact offered a GFW contract despite what GFW wants you to believe and noted that: “It was not a contract that anyone with any value, any sense of self-value or self-worth would sign.” That is a shame considering he was tight with Jeff Jarrett and is solid in the ring.

    - DJZ a.k.a. Zema Ion has been medically cleared to return to action following his serious injury earlier this summer in Mexico where he injured himself during a match causing serious internal bleeding that required surgery.

    - Apparently it looks like GFW is going to land Rey Mysterio once the current season of Lucha Underground finishes. He has been telling those close to him that he is strongly considering it. He will be available to debut 90 days after the current LU season airs the finale. I am completely at a loss as to why WWE wouldn’t consider giving him a part time contract as he is a name who can draw and sell merchandise, especially to the coveted Hispanic market.

    - Brandi Rhodes has been granted her release from GFW.

    - GFW is running their first live events in a long time with a show tonight in St. James NY and one tomorrow night in Staten Island. Alberto El Patron is not booked on the shows however as his suspension has not officially been lifted despite the Orlando Police announcing he is free of charges. That is significantly weird because GFW is officially noting that they are still investigating. Maybe they are better at investigating than the police?

    - Gail Kim has begun working as an agent/producer backstage at GFW at the last television tapings. She plans on retiring at the end of the year.

Ring of Honor / Lucha Underground / Independent / International News and Notes:

    - Ring of Honor had announced that Kenny Omega will defend his IWGP U.S. title for the first time on October 15th in Chicago Illinois under the Ring of Honor banner against an opponent to be named later. The show will be a “Global Wars” show in conjunction with New Japan Pro Wrestling. They have since publicly retracted that statement however noting that they are unsure if he will be defending the title or not. This is likely due to them jumping the gun on the announcement and Omega will likely defend the U.S. title in Japan first sometime in September. Hence by taking back their announcement, they are not telegraphing the finish of his September bout.

    - In amazing news for them, the Young Bucks Bullet Club shirt was the #2 seller at Hot Topic nationwide. Cody Rhodes Bullet Club shirt was #3. That is a sum of ALL SHIRTS sold at Hot Topic. Not just talking wrestling shirts nationwide, ALL. That includes pop culture, music acts, wrestling, comic book, television, etc.

    - Brandi Rhodes has begun working for Ring of Honor. She has not signed but will be working alongside Cody. She debuted with him but has not appeared on camera since she signed with GFW.

    - At the Television Critics Association Conference earlier this week, the Chief Creative Officer of El Rey Network, Skip Chaisson noted that he believes we will be getting a 4th season of Lucha Underground.

    - Over in the U.K., WXW is booking a 2 HOUR Iron Man match between David Starr and Dave Crist for their October show. I cannot imagine people in 2017 wanting to sit through a 2 hour match especially when they know the finish won’t come until the last few minutes.

    MMA News and Notes:

    - UFC presented their UFC 214 show last weekend from Los Angeles and as many expected, Jon Jones reclaimed his rightful place atop the Light Heavyweight division knocking out champion Daniel Cormier in the 3rd round. Cormier actually won the first round and the second round was close before Jones caught him with a leg kick to knock him loopy before ground and pounding him into unconsciousness. For those of you, who think it wasn’t a legit stoppage, please stop. There is footage of Cormier being assisted to his feet and out of it.

    - Jones showed props to Cormier following the fight and said he was his best rival and a worthy champion. So I guess Jones turned babyface again?

    - Props to Joe Rogan for apologizing to Daniel Cormier and the fans of UFC. Following his loss, Rogan immediately pressed Cormier for comments. Rogan is usually smarter than that and NEVER interviews someone who was just knocked out in the octagon. He chose to do so with DC for some reason and it was obvious that DC was not in his right mind especially since he was crying like his dog died. It was classless and Rogan immediately knew it and apologized.

    - Also apologizing was Cormier to referee John McCarthy as Cormier shoved him in the heat of the loss as he thought it was a bad stoppage. It wasn’t. Cormier was legit knocked unconscious and didn’t know it as he doesn’t remember it. He said after reviewing the footage that he doesn’t remember some of the shots Jones landed because he was out.

    - Jones also officially called out Brock Lesnar following the fight telling Brock to come find out how it feels to lose to someone 40 lbs. lighter than you. Those in the know believe that the fight will absolutely happen but the earliest it will happen is NEXT SUMMER and will likely headline UFC Fight Week in July 2018 meaning that Jones will likely fight again before that. That PPV will certainly be UFC’s BIGGEST EVER, no question.

    - In one of the other title fights of the night, UFC Welterweight Champion Tyron Woodley BLEW his chance at what would have certainly been the biggest payday of his career by having a dreadful performance in his win over Demien Maia. Woodley and Maia set the UFC record for LEAST amount of punches thrown in a title fight with Woodley winning by decision. Prior to the fight, UFC President Dana White had revealed that the winner would defend the Welterweight title against the returning George St. Pierre. Following the fight, Dana said that no one will pay to see Woodley fight after that performance and that GSP will face off with Michael Bisping for the UFC Middleweight Title instead because White knows that Bisping comes to fight and will not be boring against GSP. Sucks for Woodley but Dana is 100% spot on about this. Woodley could have finished Maia if he made an attempt to and he stuffed 28 takedown attempts over 5 rounds. So it isn’t even as if he was scared of Maia’s abilities.

    - Woodley revealed that he has a torn labrum and will likely require surgery which will put him on the shelf for 8 – 12 months. He is weighing his options but may try to rehab it if it is a minor tear. He tore into Dana White in an interview but apparently he and Dana have spoken and squared things away.

    - UFC Middleweight Champion Michael Bisping has since revealed on his podcast that the tentative plan is for him to fight GSP on November 4th in Madison Square Garden in New York.

    - Cris “Cyborg” Justino won the UFC Featherweight title by stopping Tonya Evinger in the 3rd round of their title fight. Surprisingly Evinger put up a solid fight and it took Justino some time to finish her. It is just too bad there is no one in the division for her to fight. The next fight should likely be Holly Holm.

    - Volkan Oezdemir MURDERED Jimi Manuwa in 42 seconds of their fight. That was his 2nd consecutive knockout in less than one minute and should actually put him in line for a shot at Jon Jones.

    - Robbie Lawler vs. Donald Cerrone = WAR. These guys just need to be put on every UFC show so you are guaranteed a fantastic fight between two warriors.

    - Despite retiring from MMA and being inducted into the UFC Hall of Fame, Urijah Faber has NOT removed himself from the USADA drug testing pool and has noted that he has NOT ruled out fighting again.

    - Floyd Mayweather vs. Conor McGregor is NOT sold out yet however the cheapest ticket available is $3,500. So that says to you what type of gate is being drawn. They are expected, even without selling out, to break the Mayweather/Pacquiao record of $72 million gate. WOW.

    - Floyd is doing some posturing on his social media as he insinuated that he is ok fighting with 8oz. gloves for their fight if that is what Conor wants. Problem is, it isn’t up to Conor or up to Floyd. It is the athletic commission that decides what gloves to use. He also hinted that when it is all said and done, he will likely walk away with $300,000,000 for this fight. Jesus.

    - Chael Sonnen revealed on his podcast that his likely next opponent in Bellator will be Chuck Liddell. He did NOT confirm that but said it was most likely. Honestly, even if it is against Chael who is primarily a wrestler, Liddell should NOT be fighting again. SMH.

    - WME-IMG received a $1.1 BILLION investment from a Canadian Pension Fund and a Wealth Fund from Singapore. This investment is to keep UFC from going public. It will also allow WME senior management and investors to take cash out of the company and buy out some minority partners.

    - The Wynn Hotel in Las Vegas has set apart a suite for Conor McGregor and his family to live in for the next two years starting with the Mayweather fight.

    - MMA coach Duke Roofus noted this week that he expects CM Punk to fight before the end of the year. I will believe it when I see it.

UFC 215 is on Saturday, September 9th, 2017 from Edmonton Alberta Canada and the line-up is as follows:

  • UFC FLYWEIGHT TITLE: Demetrious Johnson © vs. Ray Borg
  • UFC WOMEN’S BANTAMWEIGHT TITLE: Amanda Nunes © vs. Valentina Shevchenko
  • Junior Dos Santos vs. Francis Ngannou
  • Gilbert Melendez vs. Jeremy Stephens
  • Henry Cejudo vs. Wilson Reis
  • Random Thoughts, Links, Pics, ETC.

    - BONUS Random ARTICLE of the week: So this is a pretty awful way to go. Ouch.

    - BONUS Random ARTICLE of the week PART 1: F*ck this guy. I hope he gets tortured daily.

    - BONUS Random ARTICLE of the week PART 2: New York’s Port Authority is going to have to nip this in the bud ASAP or else it is going to become a trend. Worse yet, someone other than the attempted victim is going to get hurt. Imagine if he landed on someone?

    - BONUS Random ARTICLE of the week PART 3: Scumbag. Hope he dies.

    - BONUS Random ARTICLE of the week PART 4: Wow, Such an awesome gift to give. Bravo to her kids for thinking of it.

    - BONUS Random ARTICLE of the week PART 5: Terrible. Just terrible. I hope my kids have common sense to not be this way and do things like this.

    - BONUS Random ARTICLE of the week PART 6: Not sure how I feel about this verdict. On one hand, she was absolutely in the wrong in what she did but on the other hand, did she really FORCE him to commit suicide? Honestly, if he was going to do it, he was going to do it. Sure she didn’t have to tell him to do it but he was probably going to do it anyway. So I am not sure where I stand.

    - Another very good episode of “Power” this week with a sad exit to the show. I am disappointed that they didn’t extend this season. 10 episodes feel too little and I feel like the show is almost done for the year.

    - “Power” actor J.R. Ramirez will be joining the cast of Marvel/Netflix Jessica Jones as her new landlord and possible love interest.

    - President Underwood!!! I just wrapped season 2 and 3 of “House of Cards” and damn is this good TV or what? Wish I would have watched from the beginning.

    - Marvel’s “Ant-Man and The Wasp” has officially kicked off production.

    - In an interview earlier this week, an AWESOME story was revealed by Thor actor Chris Hemsworth that in the Thor: Ragnarok teaser where Hulk is revealed and he exclaims, “Yes!!! I know him; he’s a friend from work.” was actually written by a “Make-A-Wish” kid who was on the set the day it was filmed as his wish. He and Chris were chatting between takes of that scene and he told Hemsworth he should say that line. Director Taika Waititi encouraged ad-libbing for the film and even noted that literally 80% of the film was ad-libs by the cast heard it and laughed out loud. He wasn’t sure about entering it in the film but he was encouraged by a lot of the cast and crew to leave it in. So he did.

    - There are strong rumblings that when AMC’s “The Walking Dead” returns there will be a significant “time jump” and we will not be picking up where we left off with the beginning of “the war” but instead well into the war and any casualties/injuries/etc will be flashbacks to them.

    - The CW announced that this season’s “Crossover Event” will take place across two nights in November during sweeps. The crossover will kick off on Monday, November 27th on Supergirl and continue on a special MONDAY episode of Arrow immediately following. It will then continue on Tuesday on the Flash and conclude on Legends of Tomorrow immediately following. They also confirmed that unlike last season where the crossover began during the tail end of Supergirl, this season it will be a full 4 episode crossover.

    - Season 3 of Netflix’s “Narcos” debuts on September 1st. Yay!!! Although I will miss Don Pablo.

    - The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed that Ralph Macchio will be reprising his role as Daniel LaRusso in a Karate Kid TV series for…………YouTube. Yes. YouTube. William Zabka will also be reprising his role as Johnny Lawrence as the new head of the Cobra Kai dojo. It is going to be a 30 minute comedy sitcom. The premise is that Johnny is down on his luck and decides to re-open the Cobra Kai Dojo meanwhile Daniel is lost in life following the passing of Mr. Miyagi. They cross paths in All Valley and become rivals again that decide to settle their rivalry with…karate. Apparently You Tube won a bid to get the show as they were competing with Netflix, Amazon, Hulu and AMC.

    - We are also getting a Miami Vice TV reboot at NBC with Vin Diesel as Executive producer.

    – The first official review of ABC’s “The Inhumans” has come in and noted that the show is “ATROCIOUS” and that he noted he usually loves everything Marvel. He also noted that he was one of the few reviewers who gave “Iron Fist” a positive review.

    - Nintendo revealed that they are going to relaunch a “Classic” Super Nintendo based off the success of the limited time NES that was released last year. As a favor to you all, the minute they announce an N64, I want ALL of you to keep me in the loop the second you hear about it and possibly even purchase one for me (I will reimburse you of course) as I want to introduce my son to the greatest wrestling game EVER made, “No Mercy”. PLEASE. I beg of you.
