T.G.I.F. with Matt Dawgs: #411

Good day to you all and welcome to We Want Insanity. I am your host for today, Matt Dawgs and this is my column. Today is the end of the work week and the time to look back at all the goings-on over the past seven days as I wrap it up with a bow and spout it out bit by bit. Buckle up. Enjoy the ride.

IMPORTANT MATT NOTE:: I am hoping that you readers have taken the time to lend a hand and donated to the JAIDAN STRONG cause for me. I’d really appreciate it if you did; as little as $5 can go a long way. If not, it isn’t a big deal but please at least SHARE THE LINK. I get that finances can be tough for some but taking the time to share a link via your social media doesn’t cost a dime. I’d appreciate it greatly as one of your friends or family members may be able to help out. Thanks.

BONUS MATT NOTE: #MDBC8 TOMORROW NIGHT!!! Follow the hashtag on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, Snapchat and Periscope for all the madness!!! Maybe you too can attend a future event if you make your reservations. Scotland’s own Aaron Wood made an attendance one year and enjoyed himself immensely.

WWE NEWS AND NOTES:

- RAW was another solid showing with a damn good main event and the usual solid matches, decent promos and then running in place angles by other guys.

- The opening of RAW was a pleasant surprise with Jason Jordan and John Cena having a good little match. I did NOT enjoy the fact that Jordan was painted to be some rookie though since he has been on the main roster for more than a year and wrestling for a few. They tried to make the comparison to John Cena debuting against Jordan’s “dad” Kurt Angle back in 2002. Totally NOT the same. Also, Jordan jobs again. LOL.

- Roman Reigns had a better showing on the mic this week compared to last week with him not looking like a total goof and even shutting Cena down when he told Cena to do something about it and Cena did nothing but smirk. Mindgames by Cena? Yes, that is probably where they are going to end up going with it. But for now, looks like Reigns pulled punk card on Cena and he didn’t reply.

- Fantastic comeback by Reigns when Cena noticed that the zipper on his pants was broken and thus open. REIGNS: “They do call me the Big Dog.” Quick thinking on his feet and great comeback.

- Sheamus & Cesaro vs. Dean Ambrose & Seth Rollins is already boring me. They need more “meat” to their feud. I also do not like they fact that they aren’t leaning towards a reunion with Roman Reigns yet. I still believe they need to reunite them as heels.

- Solid match between Miz and Jeff Hardy although I am SHOCKED that Miz won cleanly. I was completely blindsided by that. I absolutely thought that he would win by nefarious means or that Jeff would win the title.

- Cool that Jeff got the title shot exactly 10 years after he last won the I.C. title. WOW.

- I don’t know if Matt sees light at the end of the tunnel or if it is because of the rumors of GFW being sold (see GFW section) but he is going more and more into his “Broken” style of promos each and every week.

- Poor Enzo. I completely miss him on TV now because I completely do not watch any of the 205 Live stuff that airs on RAW. A shame. I do hear that Enzo is getting a title shot at No Mercy and he is probably going to win the title so that is a plus for him.

- So a few weeks ago, Finn Balor lost to Bray Wyatt clean on RAW with his finisher then gets that “red acidic liquid” dumped on him. So he becomes “the Demon” and beats Bray Wyatt clean. Now Bray challenges him to fight without the Demon? And Finn accepts? Huh? Who writes this?

- Are they going to go with Nia Jax or not? I am tired of the start/stop pushes. She gets pushed as a monster but when push comes to shove, doesn’t get the opportunity. Now she is once again put in a title match and I have a feeling she is not going to win cause Alexa is going to beat either Sasha or Emma to keep the title.

- Did WWE ever follow up on Mickie James having to tweet whatever hashtag that Emma wanted her to? Did Mickie ever do it?

- Like a broken record I sound but the tag team division is spread so thin amongst two shows. I really wish they kept titles floating between brands like “touring champions” of the old territory days. More fresh matches.

- Braun Strowman and The Big Show put on one hell of a match on Monday. Show had his working shoes on and Strowman continues to improve week in and week out. As much as I love Brock and what he represents, WWE should absolutely put the strap on Strowman. As I have noted several times before, Brock is good as a believable champ who is a monster. The only issue is, here is here so sporadically. With Braun, you have a monster who can appear WEEKLY and on live events. He is the perfect guy for the job.

- Amazingly enough, Strowman turned on 34 years old this week meaning he has a lot of years ahead barring major injury. WOW.

- Big Show apparently has a hip issue that is going to require surgery. Monday may have been his swan song for some time and him being power slammed THROUGH the steel cage may be his “out”.

- Kevin Owens is far and away the best HEEL that WWE has on the roster. It isn’t even close. Despite being so awesome at his job, he still manages to get himself heel heat; truly genuine heel heat and not go away heel heat. It is amazing. Never did I think I would WANT a Kevin Owens vs. Shane McMahon feud until Kevin Owens convinced me that it is something I want to see. LOL.

- Can anyone explain why Kevin Owens is on Smackdown? Didn’t he switch over when they gave everyone an opportunity to go where ever they wanted? I am asking because Owens in his promo on Smackdown told Shane that Shane never wanted him on Smackdown and that he never wanted to leave Raw. So what the hell happened? Why did he leave RAW if he never wanted to? Why is he on Smackdown if Shane never wanted him to be there? I am confused.

- I hope and pray that we are seeing the LAST of the Carmella and James Ellsworth pairing. I hope it isn’t a ruse and they are actually building it to get a finish. If they want him on the roster because he makes Vince laugh, fine. I get it. But the act as a pair sucks. They need to just keep her single until Big Cass is ready to return to action next year and then when he returns, move him to Smackdown so that he can come back fresh. You can just say he was a free agent during his injury and that way you can keep him and Enzo apart.

- And this angle of her abusing him is terrible by the way.

- Dolph Ziggler’s “re-debut” sucked. No other way to explain it and no gentler way to say it. It was terrible. He is terrible. This gimmick is terrible. I wish they would just let his wrestling speak for itself instead of saddling him with more and more stupid angles.

- Sami Zayn. WOW. Wonder who he pissed off so badly. WOW.

- Is Tye Dillinger going to get a serious push? I assume him and A.J. are actually going to be given time next week instead of the 2 minutes they got a few weeks ago. That’s awesome if so because he can work if they let him.

- You know when ratings are becoming an issue on Smackdown as Vince McMahon is making his television return next week on a STACKED show. Vince would usually save his return for RAW so the fact that he is coming to Tuesday shows that they are not happy with the ratings slide of late.

- Smackdown had a good show as usual. Super surprised that Nakamura beat Orton clean in the main with his finisher. WOW. So thought someone would cost Orton the match. Glad they are pushing Nakamura still. He HAS TO win the title at Hell in a Cell though or else they are cutting his legs out from underneath him.

- The Baron Corbin burial/punishment had nothing to do with his behavior on social media or his performances. Instead, he was being punished for getting into an argument with Dr. Joseph Maroon during a talent meeting in which Corbin defended talent and that Maroon had long covered up the relation between concussions and CTE as witnessed in Will Smith’s film “Concussion”. Many in the locker room defended Corbin and are glad he stood up for them however it was the “wrong place, wrong time” for that debate. It was also revealed that Corbin is a part of the class action concussion lawsuit that former players have against the NFL which WWE was NOT aware he was a part of until last month.

- The creative team is apparently none too pleased with Paul Heyman as Heyman usually changes EVERYTHING they write both promo wise or angle wise involving Brock Lesnar. Heyman however does have Vince’s ear and thus gets the creative freedom to do whatever he wants making changes. Since almost everything that Lesnar has been involved in spikes an upturn in business, Vince is 100% on board with Heyman writing everything involving Lesnar. Heyman is heavily involved in all aspects of the Lesnar presentation including the match structure/layouts of the matches as he is technically the producer/agent in charge of it and gets feedback from Lesnar’s opponents when building it as opposed to normal non-Lesnar matches that are laid out by producers/agents completely and then tweaked by talents.

- Darren Young returned from his elbow injury which has kept him sidelined for most of the year. He worked live events over the weekend.

- Nikki Bella confirmed that the tentative plan is for her to return in 2018 with Brie by her side. She also noted that her surgeon also confirmed that she can no longer wrestle full time anymore and it will only be a handful of matches per year.

- John Bradshaw Layfield a.k.a. JBL has stepped down from his weekly announcing duties on Smackdown effective immediately. He has decided that he needed to step away so that he can focus full time on his charitable work with children. Corey Graves will now take the helm for both RAW and Smackdown full time. With the dual position, Graves will no longer do 205 Live and Nigel McGuinness will now take his place.

- WWE for the first time in a LONG time WWE will NOT be giving their talents off on Christmas and New Year’s Day. Both Raw and Smackdown will be airing LIVE on those dates. That has to be tough on those who have families. This was apparently a USA Network decision and NOT a WWE one.

- Samoa Joe is due to be held off television until his return which is currently scheduled for the end of October sometime.

- John Cena is currently the front runner for the lead role of WB’s “Shazam” film where he will play the title character in Shazam form. For those who do not know, Shazam is a kid who is granted god-like powers when he says “SHAZAM” and protects the world. His abilities are similar to Superman. What is interesting is that even though he will NOT be in the first film, Shazam’s main villain is Black Adam (who has the same ability only he isn’t a kid, he is an adult) and that role has been casted for the WB Movie-verse by Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson.

The 4 Horsewomen confront the 4 Horsewomen. The angle has been getting a lot of attention and as I noted when they first appeared on camera at the tapings, this is 100% leading to a match. No way does WWE push it if it isn’t ending up somewhere. Rumor has it as soon as Survivor Series with Ronda then returning at Mania in New Orleans for a 1x1 match with either Charlotte or Stephanie McMahon. Expect to know more next week during the finals of the Mae Young Classic in Las Vegas with Kani Sane taking on Shayna Baszler in the finals. The finals will determine the new NXT Women’s Champion as William Regal announced on NXT this week when Asuka vacated the title that he will give it some thought over the next several weeks.

- WWE’s experience with the Mae Young Classic may have in fact worked by allowing it to air in 4 episode releases so people can binge watch. The top 8 programs on the WWE Network this past week were the 8 episodes of the show. WOW.

- Chris Jericho notes in his new book that he is the one who caused the ban against A.J. Styles “Styles Clash” finisher to be unbanned. When Styles was signed, due to several wrestlers being severely injured from taking the move incorrectly, Styles was told that he couldn’t use the move and Jericho felt that was ridiculous and that the move is harmless if you know how to take it. When Styles was working his program with Jericho, he convinced Styles to use the move during the match without letting anyone know. He took the move and KICKED OUT of it much to the chagrin of a lot of people in the back (as well as me at home as I remember that match and I was pissed that it was the first time he used it and Jericho kicked out). Following the match however, he went to Vince and asked his opinion about the move and the big reaction the kickout got despite never using the term “Styles Clash”. Vince liked it and Jericho put over the move noting it should be A.J.’s finisher. Vince agreed that it looked good as a finisher and BOOM, Styles Clash was unbanned.

- Congrats to Carmella and Big Cass as they purchased a house together in Florida.

- WWE announced that they have officially signed Donovan Dijak and he has begun “training” at the Performance Center.

- WWE Hall of Famer Ric Flair is on the road to recovery. He released a promo he cut from the hospital on all of his social media accounts in which he was wearing a shirt from his website that reads “I ain’t dead yet mother*ckers”. In the promo he thanked the fans for their support and noted that he plans on seeing everyone real soon. WHOOOO!!!!!

- Flair also announced that he is parting ways with Melinda Morris Zanoni & Legacy Talent Agency and will have new representation soon.

- Attorney Konstantine Kryos, the lawyer behind all of the concussion lawsuits by former talents against WWE attempted to reach a settlement with WWE but was denied.

- Doug Nemeth, brother of Dolph (Nick Nemeth) Ziggler was sentenced to 15 years in prison following pleading guilty in the murder of Joshua Mascol. Nemeth pleaded to a lesser charge of Manslaughter as well as Kidnapping and Robbery.

WWE “NO MERCY” PPV is on Sunday, September 24th, 2017 from Los Angeles California and the line-up is as follows:

  • John Cena vs. Roman Reigns

  • Finn Balor vs. Bray Wyatt
  • WWE CRUISERWEIGHT TITLE: Neville © vs. Enzo Amore
  • WWE “HELL IN A CELL” PPV is on Sunday, October 8th, 2017 from Detroit Michigan and the line-up is as follows:

  • WWE TITLE: Jinder Mahal © w/The Singh Brothers vs. Shinsuke Nakamura
  • GLOBAL FORCE WRESTLING NEWS and NOTES:

    - There are rumors circulating that Anthem Sports is already looking to SELL GFW due to Anthem losing more money on the product than anticipated. The Live Events that they ran last month were a testing the waters type deal as they were looking to see if they can gain some financial flexibility with them. Unfortunately one was cancelled due to poor ticket sales and the other two shows in NY were terrible money losers. They have no sort of financial windfall on the horizon and the chance of gaining a new TV partner that would pay them more is now out the window after coming to a deal to stay on Pop TV. No other suitors were showing interest in airing them so now they are in a jam as they have no major revenue source to help keep them from losing money.

    - Obviously the main buyers of the company would once again be Billy Corgan and WWE. WWE has stated multiple times to them that they are only interested in the tape library. Corgan is more willing to take over the promotion and continue to try and run it. Either way it would free up Matt and Jeff Hardy to get back their “Broken” gimmick as Corgan was a supporter of them being allowed to take it to WWE and if WWE ends up buying, I am sure they would get the name in the sale.

    - GFW President Jeff Jarrett will be taking an indefinite “leave of absence” from GFW as he deals with “personal issues” due to being “tired and emotional”. It was rumored that he worked the AAA TripleMania show under a less than ideal state of mind and probably shouldn’t have been allowed to perform at all. Also, all of those Reby Hardy tweets from the last year all make a lot more sense now that this has come out. Just saying.

    - With Jarrett now on leave, the creative team will be run by John Gaburick, Sonjay Dutt and Scott D’Amore.

    - If Jarrett is NOT brought back by November, the belief is that his feud with MMA Coach Dan Lambert will shift to Jim Cornette.

    - GFW had planned to build a match with Jarrett and Alberto El Patron that was set to take place at Bound for Glory on November 5th which was to end up being a swerve. Jarrett would have teased that it would be him only for it to turn out to be Rey Mysterio. However, even if Jarrett does come back, it will no longer be Mysterio as all talks with him are now officially DEAD. Mysterio is working for Konnan’s “The Crash” promotion and The Crash and GFW have been having several issues including GFW’s insistence working with AAA in Mexico.

    - Global Force Wrestling is FINALLY getting in on the action as WrestleCon has announced them as having a show over Wrestlemania Weekend in New Orleans next year.

Ring of Honor / Lucha Underground / Independent / International News and Notes:

    - PWG presented their annual “Battle for Los Angeles” weekend last weekend and as usual, it was a weekend filled with FANTASTIC matches. Ricochet won the tournament and in a surprise, noted that he’d like to win the PWG title before he “moves on” to bigger things. That suggested to all that he plans on being WWE bound as soon as he is legally able to which would be in January 2018.

    - The match of the weekend went to new WWE trainee Donovan Dijak against Keith Lee in a match that Dave Meltzer rated 5 Stars and said it was the best U.S. match this year.

    - Jeff Cobb and Matt Riddle are going to be going to New Japan for an upcoming tour soon. They have teamed regularly on the independents as “The Chosen Bros.” It is expected that they will be in the Tag League Tournament.

    - I have zero clue as to why Sexy Starr just doesn’t SHUT UP about the TripleMania incident with Rosemary instead of digging herself deeper. SMH.

    - I do commend AAA for FINALLY doing something as Sexy Starr was stripped of her title. I totally did not think they would discipline her over this.

    - The Crash promotion from Mexico has announced that they are running at WrestleCon in New Orleans during Wrestlemania weekend.

    - The Crash has been making attempted to book the Bullet Club as well as Kazuchika Okada for shows but New Japan is not allowing it since they have a working agreement with CMLL in Mexico. Since CMLL is now working with The Crash, there is hope that it will open up New Japan to allowing their talent to work there as well. The hope was to book Okada vs. Rey Mysterio which would be HUGE.

    - New Japan Pro Wrestling announced that Kenny Omega suffered a slight meniscus tear which will force him to miss some of the upcoming “Destruction” tour but not all dates. He is still scheduled to make his first IWGP U.S. Title defense against Juice Robinson on September 24th despite undergoing surgery yesterday to repair the tear. He will be back in action only 18 days following surgery. Not the smartest idea in my opinion.

    - Leo Tonga, the younger “BIG” brother of Tama Tonga and also son of Haku will be working the tour while Omega is out of action. Leo is 6’8 and 275 lbs. He was trained at the Team 3D Academy and the New Japan Dojo.

    - Omega has added some November dates for ROH’s tour of Florida.

    - Kazuchika Okada is now officially the 2nd longest reigning IWGP Champion in New Japan history as he has had the title for a combined 1,232 days over his 4 title reigns. He only trails Hiroshi Tanahashi’s record of 1,358 days over 7 title reigns. Okada’s current reign has been 443 consecutive days.

    - New Japan has Sami Callihan coming in for a tour soon before year end. Question for those who follow his career, does anyone know other than the gimmick what went wrong with his WWE run?

    - Congrats to Lucha Underground ring announcer Melissa Santos as she is expecting her first child with longtime boyfriend/LU competitor Brian Cage.

    - Props to OVW in Louisville as they are holding a fundraising event for Matt Cappotelli on September 23rd. A lot of former OVW talent not contracted currently to WWE will be in attendance as well as Jim Cornette.

    - Despite El Rey wanting another season of Lucha Underground, they are not going to fund it. No one else is on deck to fund it meaning that we may have seen the end of it as a promotion. None of the talent have been contacted about future tapings and no one knows what the status is.

    MMA News and Notes:

    - Showtime confirmed that they fully expect that Mayweather vs. McGregor has PASSED 4,000,000 PPV buys and that if they do not break the PPV buys record, they will be close to it.

    - Despite claiming record numbers otherwise, the total gate for Mayweather vs. McGregor FAILED to surpass that of Mayweather vs. Pacquiao as the Nevada State Athletic Commission revealed that the gate was $55,414,865 which was well short of the $72 million that Mayweather/Pacquiao did. The fight was NOT a sell out as only 13,094 tickets were sold compared to 16,219 for Mayweather vs. Pacquiao.

    - McGregor’s head coach John Kavanagh revealed that it is highly unlikely that Conor will fight in UFC in 2017 due to resting following the Mayweather fight and then the amount of time it will take to plan and execute a UFC training camp before year end.

    - DOWN GOES BORG!!! Tomorrow night’s main event of Demetrious Johnson defending his UFC Flyweight Title against Ray Borg is OFF as Borg is ill and unable to compete. The co-main event of Amanda Nunes defending her Women’s Bantamweight Title against Valentina Shevchenko is now the main event. This will also now likely be the least purchased UFC PPV of all time. I predict UNDER 100,000 buys.

    - There was some confusion last week when it was revealed that Jon Jones PASSED his post-fight drug test despite failing his drug test from the weigh in the day before. USADA cleared up any rumors by noting that the drug Jones failed for was Turinabol and that is only tested in urine, NOT blood. They did not test it in his blood post-fight hence why it came back negative.

    - Alexander Volkov crushed Stefan Struve last weekend in Rotterdam finishing him via KO in Rd. 3. Struve seems to be done. He was always on the cusp of making a run at becoming a big star.

    - Paige VanZant is moving up to the Flyweight Division. She noted that the cut down was too much and she is never fighting at 115 lbs. again. She had issues cutting down that low and had passed out several times when doing it.

    - Duke Roofus of Roofus Sports a.k.a. CM Punk’s trainer revealed that he expects a fight announcement for Punk’s 2nd MMA fight to be coming soon from UFC.

    - Not sure if this is going to mean anything or not but Cris “Cyborg” Justino has been granted a boxing license in the state of California.

    - Speaking of Cyborg, Holly Holm revealed earlier this week that she is interested in fighting for the Featherweight title.

    - According to Forbes, Lorenzo and Frank Fertitta have sold their remaining stake in the UFC meaning they are 100% OUT of the company. When UFC was sold to WME, they retained a small stake in the promotion of about 5.8%. They sold that percentage to WME last month.

    - Former UFC Heavyweight Champion Cain Velasquez is expecting his 2nd child with his wife coupled with several outside venues he is working on so he is NOT expected to be challenging Stipe Miocic for the UFC Heavyweight Title anytime soon and likely will not be fighting until 2018. The original talk was to have him scheduled for one of the December PPV shows.

    - MMA and Wrestling star Yoshihiro Takayama FINALLY gave an update on his status regarding his injury. He has mobility from his shoulders upwards but cannot move any part of his body below his shoulders. He also noted that it does NOT look promising that he ever will move again. Ugh. Brutal.

    - Ben Askren announced that he will be retiring from MMA following his One Championship title defense on November 24th. It is a shame that UFC never gave him an opportunity. Yes his fights are sometime boring if you are not a fan of straight wrestling but he is undefeated and no one has come close to beating him. Yes smothering your opponent can be considered un-fun to watch but it was effective and it would have been interesting to see if someone in UFC would be able to find a solution. Askren will be joining the front office of the One Promotion.

    - Aaron Pico, the much touted former wrestler that joined Bellator and lost in his debut returns to MMA for Bellator’s show on September 23rd against Justin Linn. No pressure or anything but another loss would be devastating for his career.

    - Former MMA star Joe Son currently serving prison time for a rape conviction just had 27 more years added to his time due to murdering another inmate. Son is best known for his role in the Austin Powers franchise as “Random Task” a.k.a. Dr. Evil’s henchmen who killed people by throwing his hat at them.

UFC 215 is TOMORROW NIGHT from Edmonton Alberta Canada and the line-up is as follows:

  • UFC WOMEN’S BANTAMWEIGHT TITLE: Amanda Nunes © vs. Valentina Shevchenko
  • Gilbert Melendez vs. Jeremy Stephens
  • Henry Cejudo vs. Wilson Reis
  • UFC 216 is on Saturday, October 7th, 2017 from Las Vegas Nevada and the line-up is as follows:

  • INTERIM UFC LIGHTWEIGHT TITLE: Tony Ferguson vs. Kevin Lee
  • Nik Lentz vs. Will Brooks
  • Paige VanZant vs. Jessica Eye
  • Stephen Thompson vs. Jorge Masvidal
  • Fabricio Werdum vs. Derrick Lewis
  • UFC 217 is on Saturday, November 4th, 2017 from New York, New York and the line-up is as follows:

  • UFC MIDDLEWEIGHT TITLE: Michael Bisping © vs. George St. Pierre
  • UFC BANTAMWEIGHT TITLE: Cody Garbrandt © vs. T.J. Dillashaw
  • Johnny Hendricks vs. Paulo Borrachinha
  • UFC 218 is on Saturday, December 2nd, 2017 from Detroit Michigan and the line-up is as follows:

  • TBD vs. TBD
  • UFC 219 is on Saturday, December 30th, 2017 from Las Vegas Nevada and the line-up is as follows:

  • TBD vs. TBD
