T.G.I.F. with Matt Dawgs: #412

Good day to you all and welcome to We Want Insanity. I am your host for today, Matt Dawgs and this is my column. Today is the end of the work week and the time to look back at all the goings-on over the past seven days as I wrap it up with a bow and spout it out bit by bit. Buckle up. Enjoy the ride.

IMPORTANT MATT NOTE:: I am hoping that you readers have taken the time to lend a hand and donated to the JAIDAN STRONG cause for me. I’d really appreciate it if you did; as little as $5 can go a long way. If not, it isn’t a big deal but please at least SHARE THE LINK. I get that finances can be tough for some but taking the time to share a link via your social media doesn’t cost a dime. I’d appreciate it greatly as one of your friends or family members may be able to help out. Thanks.

BONUS MATT NOTE: R.I.P. to actor Frank Vincent. “ Now go and get your f*cking shine box.” If you haven’t seen “Goodfellas”, go do so today. I know some of my younger viewers have never seen it. But it is required viewing.

- The BIG news this week actually took place on Smackdown instead of on RAW as Vince McMahon made his television return to confront Kevin Owens and then was attacked. The angle itself was tremendous with both men being on point as expected. The beating was convincing in that it made Vince look inferior to Owens which is something he has NOT done in years since the McMahon’s have been painted as top stars who can hang with anyone. The problem however was the initial assault with Owens head-butting 72 year old Vince McMahon in the head. Similar to how Shibata in New Japan did before his final head butt against Okada that ended his own career due to severe head trauma. The head butt caused Vince to bleed although many believe he had bladed before coming out and it was covered with some type of gimmick to re-open on impact. Either way, it was a dangerous spot/move to take from anyone on the roster following Shibata in Japan let alone a 72 year old who runs a company that is being sued by a hell of a lot of people for concussion issues. SMH.

- For the record, this comment was on purpose by Vince: “If you sue, it’ll take years before it ever goes to court and by that time you’ll be bankrupt.” That was unequivocally a direct comment to one Phil “CM Punk” Brooks.

- RAW was a solid show which featured John Cena vs. Braun Strowman for the 1st time ever. While I am 100% against the fact that they gave this away on RAW with no build up when it could have been saved for a big money match on a PPV, I get why they did it. WWE needs to get as many “dream matches” for Cena before he goes full time to Hollywood and it was also the FIRST RAW against the current NFL Monday Night Football season. So essentially they were hot-shotting

- For those of you who were wondering, YES the announcement the Miz made on RAW is in fact REAL. Maryse is in fact pregnant with their first child. Not sure if she will continue on with her television role. Miz personally thanked WWE on his Instagram for allowing him to announce it on TV. He noted that it was fitting that he do so because WWE is where he and Mayrse met. They were met by a lot of talent at the gorilla position following the match with Enzo because other than some key people in management, they kept the news to themselves that they were expecting. So essentially when they announced it on TV is when most of the roster found out.

- And while on the subject of Miz, what the hell was that? Sure the promo was good because Miz is ALWAYS good on the mic but Jesus H. Christ did they get way too “shooty” on the promo with he and Enzo. WTF? I guarantee that inside that arena, 90% of the people sitting there had no f*cking clue what Miz was talking about when he mentioned Enzo being disliked in the locker room and kicked off the tour bus. Not everyone is “in the know” on things. My 10 year old son saw the segment and asked what Miz was talking about. A complete and utter waste of time that draws no dimes. Yes, I used an Enzo catch phrase. WWE is getting very “WCW/Russo-like” with the worked shoots lately. Not everyone gets it.

- PS. – Way to bury 205 Live by having Miz say that Enzo was sent there because he wasn’t wanted on RAW. Ouch.

- Good to know that the locker room isn’t the only place that Enzo has heat. His ex-girlfriend Liv Morgan tweeted “I’m happy to be single because it means no one is cheating on me.” LOLOLOLOLZ.

- So Jason Jordan’s nickname is now “Gold Blooded”. You know, it is a play on Cold Blooded but using Gold because his “dad” is an Olympic gold medalist. Ugh. I mean props to WWE for not being quitters I guess since this angle DIED weeks ago but they are sticking to it and ramming Jordan down our throats as Kurt’s son.

- I do give Jordan props for trying and he certainly had had his working shoes on two weeks in a row as he had a fantastic match with Cena last week and an even better one with Reigns this week.

- More of the same old stuff from Cena and Reigns with the worked/shoot comments. Look, 90% if what Reigns is saying is bullsh*t. Cena is still a proven draw as his appearance ALWAYS boosts ticket sales for TV and live events and he boosts ratings on shows that he appears on. Smackdown took a significant dip in the ratings when Cena moved to RAW last months. Although that was helped a lot this week with Vince’s appearance as Smackdown got their 4th highest rating of 2017 and their highest since April. So for Reigns to keep harping on that is dumb but the average fan doesn’t know if it is true or not.

- Props to Reigns telling Cena that if he needs help making it in Hollywood, he knows a guy. LOLOL.

- The Heyman/Brock vs. Strowman segment was MAGNIFICENT. Heyman, as usual, makes Brock’s opponent out to look like a million bucks. Meanwhile, the booking of Strowman is SOLID GOLD. Him finally (unless you count the rumble a few years back where he took several) getting German Suplexed only to stand right up while Brock stood there in shock was an amazing moment and the crowd ate it up. Then having him lay out Brock again, amazing.

- This Balor/Wyatt thing sucks.

- Asuka is coming to RAW. Not for nothing but I am ok with this. Smackdown has the better roster of Women’s in ring performers with Charlotte, Natalya, Becky, Naomi, Carmella. RAW could use someone fresh and solid in ring. Plus with Paige on the way back, you could always move her to Smackdown instead. She will likely debut in November on the brand and debut in the ring at Survivor Series.

- By the way, they have been building to Jax getting a shot at the title, why book her against Bliss next week on RAW in a non-title? Shouldn’t they build to the 1 on 1 match?

- Look, I get that they are hot on Elias and he can talk, has a good look and the gimmick is getting over. So sh*t or get off the pot. Having him win meaningless matches against Kalisto (who really should be put on 205 Live already) is dumb. Give him a feud/angle.

- Boy has the wind in the sails of Ambrose and Rollins as well as the Hardy’s gone away or what? They are just regular guys now.

- The Dillinger vs. A.J. match on Smackdown was what the match they had the week before should have been. Look, I get not giving Dillinger a push but he never should have gotten squashed by A.J. the week before. Keep him as a solid mid-card hand who has good matches and is involved in decent feuds.

- Ok, I like Jinder. I have made this known for a few weeks now. He isn’t the best in the ring but he is ok and he carries himself like a champion. He is also a decent promo and he is getting legit heel heat, not “X-Pac heat”. With that being said, what the f*ck was that promo on Smackdown? Holy sh*t it was terrible. That whole segment from beginning to end was awful.

- As I said in this very column a few weeks ago, the goal is for The New Day to be the winningest tag team champions ever. Winning the belts back on Smackdown this week will NOT be the last time these guys hold the titles.

- As noted many times, they really should have kept the tag titles on one brand and the women’s on another so there are more challengers for those titles. Don’t get me wrong, the Usos vs. The New Day is a hot feud and they have great matches but I’d so like to see them feud with other people. They can’t feud forever and if they keep switching the titles back and forth, it will kind of be counterproductive for New Day breaking the record because the Usos have as many reigns as them. So they’d both be chasing the record. It would be much easier to accomplish if they had more tag teams that they can lose to.

- This James Ellsworth thing is murder on my brain. Ugh. HATE IT.

- I don’t think I hate it as much as this Dolph Ziggler gimmick of claiming people who are “all entrance” can’t lace his boots. I am 99.999% positive it is leading towards Bobby Roode’s return though since he was purposely kept off television again for the 2nd week in a row.

- By the way, it was completely disrespectful of WWE to have Dolph do Warrior’s gimmick with Dana Warrior sitting in the front row (since she was there for the Mae Young Classic). Allegedly she didn’t get a heads up/warning it was going to be happening either. SMH.

- Content control. Oh my god there is really ZERO excuse for this. Tom Phillips following Gable and Benjamin’s win over the Hype Bros and said, AND I QUOTE, “The Usos looked good in defending their titles earlier in the show.”

- Congrats to Kari Sane for winning the first annual Mae Young Classic Tournament and going on to compete for the NXT Women’s Title at the November NXT Takeover event against Ember Moon and two other to be named challengers. It was a solid match and while we knew Sane was already signed, I’d be in shock if Baszler wasn’t. She has been incredible in the tournament for someone who is only a few years into the business. She played her role to perfection and despite her age, WWE needs her on the roster as she is ready to contribute right now. Yes she still needs some work to improve but she is far better than she has any right being at her experience level. Sane on the other hand is incredible. She has her babyface in peril act down to perfection and her ability is top notch. Her only issue is her size as she is a legit 5’3 and maybe 105 lbs.?

- Out of all the participants in the tournament, only Mercedes Martinez, Piper Niven, Candice LeRae and Toni Storm were shown in the audience. One would be lead to believe that they are signed or close to signing because I cannot imagine any other reason WWE would fly non-contracted talent out to Vegas for this; especially Piper who resides in Japan where she works full time for Stardom.

- Surprised Mia Yim wasn’t brought to the show as she should be signed.

- Before the tournament started, WWE had already signed Sarah Logan (Crazy Mary Dobson), Xia Li, Rhea Ripley, Abby Laith, Zeda, Vanessa Borne, Dakota Kai, Kavita Devi, Bianca Belair, Sage Beckett, Lacey Evans, Taynara Conti & Reina Gonzalez. So they will all be appearing sporadically on NXT over the next several months.

- Shocked that Tessa Blanchard has not been signed or was not brought to the finals. She needs to be signed ASAP as she is only 22 and between her ability and her background of being the daughter of Tully Blanchard and step-daughter of Magnum T.A., she needs a contract. What is the hold up? It also helps that she is the girlfriend of Ricochet.

- Surprisingly enough, no angle was filmed involving Ronda Rousey, Jessamyn Duke, Marina Shafir and the WWE Four Horsewomen of Charlotte, Becky Lynch, Sasha Banks and Bayley. Maybe they are saving it for another day/show?

- Speaking of Charlotte, according to her new book co-written with her father Ric, she is following his footsteps outside the ring as well as she has been through 2 divorces so far. So not only is she chasing his title record of 16 but chasing his divorce record of 4.

- Ric Flair is not only up and about while still in the hospital but did an interview with People Magazine and is rumored to have filmed an updated piece for his ESPN “30 for 30” documentary that is set to debut in November. God I hope this doesn’t delay if any further as this documentary is 3 years in the making now.

- The stable of Adam Cole, Bobby Fish and Kyle O’Reilly will be known in NXT as “The Undisputed Era” and their new shirts will be branded with the C.F.O. logo (C for Cole, F for Fish, O for O’Reilly). I am ok with the name and logo but was hoping they’d add a 4th member from ROH like Lio Rush or Donovan Dijak. Especially since Rush debuted under that name this week at the NXT tapings losing to his former partner Velveteen Dream. Oh well.

- Shane Thorne made his return from knee surgery several months back as TM61 is back in NXT. They took on Wesley Blake and Steve Cutler.

- WWE Hall of Famer Ric Flair revealed that he is now being managed by “Get Engaged” for all of his business endeavors after firing his former management team last week.

- WWE Hall of Famer Mick Foley underwent successful knee replacement surgery last week. He noted that his hip replacement surgery helped him immensely with his pain and while he is in tremendous pain with his new knee and physical therapy has been grueling, doctors tell him that he will feel like a new man once he is healed up. He had NOT been able to straighten his right knee in about 10 years or so and has been overcompensating by walking on his left knee for a while.

- Pay it back and NEVER forget where you came from. With no WWE live events last weekend, A.J. Styles showed up unannounced with the WWE U.S. Title at the NWA Wildside show in Georgia last weekend. Styles got his break in pro wrestling working for NWA Wildside BEFORE he even debuted in Ring of Honor.

- WWE has FINALLY confirmed shows taking place in India. They will be on December 7th and December 8th in New Delhi. Amazingly enough though, they are scheduled to be RAW Brand shows. Jinder Magal is on the Smackdown brand. SMH. I fully believe that they will put Jinder on these shows however to help draw as well as Great Khali and the Singh Brothers.

- Primo is expected back soon from knee surgery and he and Epico will be returning to the Smackdown brand when he is back.

- Harper and Rowan have been working live events as a tag team. What gets me is that WWE is so short on quality teams; why not use Harper and Rowan again? Make them the guys who have been attacking Breezango. Makes sense no?

WWE “NO MERCY” PPV is on Sunday, September 24th, 2017 from Los Angeles California and the line-up is as follows:

  • WWE UNIVERSAL TITLE: Brock Lesnar © w/Paul Heyman vs. Braun Strowman
  • John Cena vs. Roman Reigns
  • WWE RAW WOMEN’S TITLE: Alexa Bliss © vs. Sasha Banks vs. Nia Jax vs. Emma
  • WWE RAW TAG TEAM TITLES: Seth Rollins & Dean Ambrose © vs. Sheamus & Cesaro
  • Finn Balor vs. Bray Wyatt
  • WWE CRUISERWEIGHT TITLE: Neville © vs. Enzo Amore
  • WWE “HELL IN A CELL” PPV is on Sunday, October 8th, 2017 from Detroit Michigan and the line-up is as follows:

  • WWE TITLE: Jinder Mahal © w/The Singh Brothers vs. Shinsuke Nakamura
  • Kevin Owens vs. Shane McMahon IN A HELL IN A CELL

    - Despite their denials and the fact that they are actively engaging in discussions to sell the promotion, Anthem Sports announced that they are still full speed ahead with their launch of the Global Force Wrestling Network which will be a streaming service at $7.99 a month and will launch soon with about 850 hours or TNA content. The eventual plan is to not only air TNA/GFW stuff but add AAA, The Crash, etc. to their network.

    - But if you were ONE of the lucky few to catch it, the Network actually went LIVE on Tuesday for several HOURS and had every single PPV that TNA has ever aired available to stream…..FOR FREE. No signup required. No payment or credit card info required. Just go in, choose the PPV and watch. Oh…and there was a video of Josh Matthews that noted the network cost of $5.99. You know, despite Ed Nordholm announcing the cost would be $7.99 at launch. This f*cking company. SMH. How are they still in business and yet WCW and ECW both ended up closing with a much more talented roster and much smarter business people running the show???

    - And in a story of GFW being TNA-like meaning the more things change, the more they stay the same, despite the rebranding from TNA to GFW, Anthem still does NOT own the Global Force Wrestling name. That belongs to Jeff Jarrett. SMH. So they are launching a network with a title that they do not own.

    - Ed Nordholm did confirm that he has ZERO INTEREST in selling the tape library to WWE. If he were to sell the company, he would keep the library because he knows how much the library it worth and what WWE is willing to pay for it and noted that it doesn’t make financial sense because he could monetize the library himself on the Fight Network and make more than he would if he sold it to Vince.

    - Barring injury or some outside setback, Alberto El Patron will be back at Bound for Glory however he has no opponent. Negotiations with Rey Mysterio are officially done. He isn’t coming. The other and original option before Rey came along was Jeff Jarrett but he isn’t expected to be back by BFG.

    - With Jarrett gone, John Gaburick, Scott D’Amore and Sonjay Dutt are in charge of booking. When they come back to film new episodes, the shows are set to be more in-ring based and less talking/angle heavy. Dutch Mantell is also involved in creative as well.

    - As of now, unless things change, Jim Cornette is expected to finish up at the BFG PPV. He is not scheduled to appear at the TV tapings following the show.

    - Rosemary has been medically cleared to return to action following her injury at the hands of Sexy Starr at AAA’s Triplemania event.

    - Congrats for former Knockout/WWE Diva Christy Hemme as she announced that she is expecting…… QUADRUPLETS!!!!!

Ring of Honor / Lucha Underground / Independent / International News and Notes:

    - Ring of Honor confirmed that their annual “Final Battle” show will take place at the Hammerstein Ballroom in New York City n December 15th. Tickets go on sale today.

    - Will Ospreay will be returning to ROH in October. He will be working all October and November shows. No word on whether he will work Final Battle in December.

    - New Japan has allowed some leniency for The Crash promotion in Mexico to use some of their talents. The Young Bucks, Ricochet and War Machine are being allowed to work shows in the future. Kazuchika Okada (who The Crash wanted to book against Rey Mysterio), Kenny Omega and Will Ospreay are not allowed.

    - There is belief that Sexy Star is DONE with AAA. Not only was she stripped of the title but she was fired. No confirmation on that though.

    MMA News and Notes:

    - DOWN GOES JONES…..likely for a long time. Jon Jones “B-Sample” came back from his failed drug test in July and the results are the same. He had a banned substance in his system he has been stripped of the UFC Light Heavyweight Title, several millions of dollars in earnings and most likely the next 3 years of his career. Since it will be his 2nd suspension, he will likely get a 3-year ban thus meaning he cannot return to UFC until 2020. OUCH.

    - How suspension works is that USADA and the California Athletic Commission decide on a suspension. In the past, USADA has worked with commissions before announcing suspensions. HOWEVER….if the two do not agree on the length of the suspension, whichever punishment is harsher/longer wins. So if the CAC says 2 years but USADA says 4 years, Jones gets a 4 year ban.

    - Daniel Cormier’s loss to Jones was stricken from the record and switched to a “no contest”. He was given back the UFC Light Heavyweight Championship and will likely defend the title next against Alexander Gustafsson or Volkhan Oezdemir sometime in early 2018.

    - Ray Borg was deeply apologetic to his fans, Demetrious Johnson and UFC for having to pull out of last weekend’s UFC 215 show due to illness and noted that he has fired the “Perfecting Athletes” organization and their nutritionist as he believes that is how he caught his bug that prevented him from fighting.

    - UFC announced that the fight has officially been rescheduled to the UFC 216 show on October 7th. Johnson will once again be challenging for his 11th consecutive title defense which will be the new UFC record.

    - Speaking of 215, which was likely the least watched UFC PPV EVER, Amanda Nunes successfully defended her Women’s Bantamweight Title. It was controversial as it was close and I absolutely could have seen Valentina Shevchenko winning.

    - Luke Rockhold is angling for a title fight against Michael Bisping and noted that he doesn’t believe George St. Pierre is actually going to fight the MSG show in New York feeling that he will withdraw before then. He said he would absolutely want to replace him if he pulls out.

    - Showtime has made it public that they are 100% interested in UFC once the current UFC deal with Fox expires in 2018. That is fairly big news because it gives UFC options when going to the negotiating table. It may also create a bidding war as others may show their hand and note that they’d want to talk.

    - And here is where the McGregor fighting Floyd story gets interesting. Stipe Miocic is looking to box soon and the boxing world is offering up Anthony Joshua. It becomes interesting because on paper, that fight won’t draw a dime. But Miocic wants it and Joshua probably wants it even more. The problem is, UFC doesn’t want nor should they. Only thing is, how do they legally stop it? They cannot claim that they don’t allow their fighters to fight outside of UFC since they just did it with Conor. They can’t really bar Miocic from boxing. He absolutely would have a case if he took them to court.

    - Mickey Gall is returning and fighting on the November show from Madison Square Garden. It is unlikely he will be on the main card and likely instead on the undercard. I kind of feel bad for him. I feel like he has been lost in the shuffle since his huge wins over CM Punk and Sage Northcutt. He should have had a following and bigger name once beating them. He will now be fighting Randy Brown.

    - Bobby Lashley has notified Bellator MMA that he wants a title shot in December or at least someone that will get him close to a title shot. He also noted he is willing to fight Fedor Emelianenko if they booked it.

UFC 216 is on Saturday, October 7th, 2017 from Las Vegas Nevada and the line-up is as follows:

  • INTERIM UFC LIGHTWEIGHT TITLE: Tony Ferguson vs. Kevin Lee
  • UFC FLYWEIGHT TITLE: Demetrious Johnson © vs. Ray Borg
  • Nik Lentz vs. Will Brooks
  • Paige VanZant vs. Jessica Eye
  • Stephen Thompson vs. Jorge Masvidal
  • Fabricio Werdum vs. Derrick Lewis
  • UFC 217 is on Saturday, November 4th, 2017 from New York, New York and the line-up is as follows:

  • UFC MIDDLEWEIGHT TITLE: Michael Bisping © vs. George St. Pierre
  • UFC BANTAMWEIGHT TITLE: Cody Garbrandt © vs. T.J. Dillashaw
  • UFC WOMEN’S STRAWWEIGHT TITLE: Joanna Jerdzejczyk © vs. Rose Namajunas
  • Johnny Hendricks vs. Paulo Borrachinha
  • Mickey Gall vs. Randy Brown
  • UFC 218 is on Saturday, December 2nd, 2017 from Detroit Michigan and the line-up is as follows:

  • TBD vs. TBD
