T.G.I.F. with Matt Dawgs: #413

Good day to you all and welcome to We Want Insanity. I am your host for today, Matt Dawgs and this is my column. Today is the end of the work week and the time to look back at all the goings-on over the past seven days as I wrap it up with a bow and spout it out bit by bit. Buckle up. Enjoy the ride.

IMPORTANT MATT NOTE:: I am hoping that you readers have taken the time to lend a hand and donated to the JAIDAN STRONG cause for me. I’d really appreciate it if you did; as little as $5 can go a long way. If not, it isn’t a big deal but please at least SHARE THE LINK. I get that finances can be tough for some but taking the time to share a link via your social media doesn’t cost a dime. I’d appreciate it greatly as one of your friends or family members may be able to help out. Thanks.

BONUS MATT NOTE: Sad that this time has come but we all knew it would come someday. R.I.P. to the GREATEST MANAGER in professional wrestling history, Bobby “The Brain” Heenan. Heenan passed away on Sunday at age 72 following what was a lengthy 10+ year battle with cancer which saw him have to get a portion of his jaw completely removed. Despite his appearance and inability to speak, Heenan still made appearances up until a few years ago and was said to be in good spirits due to having two grandkids which he adored. He was by far the best manager in the business and probably the funniest man to ever perform in pro-wrestling. If you are too young to remember Heenan, I strongly suggest going to the WWE Network and watching some episodes of Prime Time Wrestling to see him and Gorilla Monsoon trade barbs and entertain fans in skits. Also go back and watch some AWA and early WWF stuff of his. Amazing.

WWE NEWS AND NOTES:

- Holy sh*t did WWE push boundaries with that Jinder Mahal promo or what? Racist much? Telling Nakamura that people think they all “rook the same” and calling him “Mr. Miyagi”. Ouch. You know you took it a step too far when the audience breaks out into a “That’s too far” chant in unison. WTF? The Washington Post picked up on the incident and reported on it. To show you how much heat WWE got over it, they did NOT upload the clip to their YouTube channel following the show.

- WWE responded to the criticism for the angle by releasing the following statement: “Just like many other TV shows or movies, WWE creates programming with fictional personalities that incorporates real world issues and sensitive subjects. As a producer of such TV shows, WWE Corporate is committed to embracing and celebrating individuals from all backgrounds as demonstrated by the diversity of our employees, performers and fans worldwide.”

- RAW was a ho-hum show that felt kind of weak for a “go home” show to a PPV. You would think they would have had more star power but with Brock not being there (his segment was taped last week), Braun not being there (because Brock wasn’t) and Cena being in China (although he could have been there since it wouldn’t have been impossible, only difficult), the show lacked something.

- Smackdown, significantly worse this week. Terrible show. No redeeming quality or segment.

- It pains me to see Jason Jordan pretend to be Kurt Angle’s son each week. It really does because he is talented and I am sure he could have gotten over had he been given the shot. Now, he is killed DEAD by the crowd. They legit do not give a f*ck about him. It is sad to watch honestly.

- Miz is awesome.

- Also dead, Bayley. They were in San Jose. Her home town. The crowd reacted to her like she just said she was Angle’s illegitimate daughter. You would think her return from injury to run off Nia Jax of all people would garner a superstar reaction. It didn’t.

- They are starting to shove the name “The Bar” down our throats for Sheamus & Cesaro. That sucks. I was ok with them using the catch phrase when cutting promos but was hoping they wouldn’t go down the route of actually naming them that. Ugh.

- Are The Club transitioning into “The Good Brothers”? I don’t know how I feel about that. I do know that they keep referencing “Revenge of the Nerds” which is a movie that is ALMOST 35 YEARS OLD!!!!! Get with the times folks. Half your audience wasn’t even born when that came out and have no clue what it is.

- I’d 100% be ok with this Goldust/Bray Wyatt feud if it was being used as a springboard for Goldust. Instead, it is being used as a backdrop for Wyatt vs. Balor which sucks. Imagine Goldust becoming Dustin Rhodes and getting one last real run?

- By the way, whatever happened to Goldust’s heel turn on R-Truth with his own camera guy and promising in a promo that he was going to introduce his new protégée? Think I forgot about that didn’t you WWE? I didn’t.

- Poor Curt Hawkins. Losing streak gimmicks NEVER work. The only one I recall getting over is Barry Horowitz vs. Chris Candido.

- The Lesnar/Strowman backstage interview was fine for what it was but the closing angle definitely should have been what took place last week with Lesnar finally suplexing him only to get laid out. That would have been the better “go home” segment.

- Reigns name dropping Alex Riley when talking about John Cena. Oooohhhhhhhh…..more shoot comments. That will do big business. That was sarcasm by the way. No one had any f*cking idea what Reigns was talking about. There was literally one guy

- I didn’t think they would pull it off but bravo to them for doing it. WWE has effectively buried Enzo Amore to the point where the audience now believes he is a dirt bag and cheered when Braun Strowman destroyed him and then on 205 Live BOOED ENZO OUT THE ARENA during his promo with Neville while cheering the HEEL Neville. My hat is off to you WWE Creative, you killed off Enzo Amore as a babyface draw.

- Mike Kanellis revealed earlier this week that he is 60 days sober. Mike Kanellis made his WWE debut at the “Money in the Bank” PPV. The “Money in the Bank” PPV was on June 18th. Today is September 22nd. Do the math.

- Anyway, in a sign that CANNOT possibly be good for him, Kanellis lost in a dark match before Smackdown to Bobby Roode. Maria did not accompany him to ringside.

- Here is the problem with McMahon angles, Shane in his promo said that he still loves his dad. This coming off of Shane’s return where both men vehemently noted that they hated each other and that Shane left the company because he wanted no part of Vince or Steph anymore. That being said, I fully expect both Shane and KO to try and kill themselves in this match and with Vince bleeding last week and the match being inside a cell, one of if not both will be bleeding in the match.

- So Aiden English is getting a push? Because he sings? The Beethoven of Baritone? Really?

- Rusev deserves so much better. I am dumfounded as to why they cannot or do not push him seriously. Is it because he is married to Lana and Lana is uber hot so writers don’t want to push him?

- I told you guys’ months ago that the turn was coming. Either Ryder is turning on Mojo or Mojo is turning on Ryder.

- Charlotte got a solid pop. Glad she is back and her dad is good. If anyone bought it, let me know how her book is and if it is worth reading.

- Enough is enough already. Let’s get to Bobby Roode’s return to confront Dolph Ziggler because these Ziggler entrances are brutal.

- WWE was filming comments from the roster backstage on both RAW and Smackdown on Bobby Heenan for what is likely a new documentary for either DVD release or the WWE Network.

- Daniel Bryan once again teased his return to wrestling this week as on Twitter he posted that it would be fun to tap out all of the Bullet Club one day and tagged Cody, The Young Bucks, Kenny Omega and Marty Scurll in the tweet. He was then asked by a fan on a scale of 1 – 10 what the chances of him wrestling again are and he replied “11”. What people do not know is that Bryan has once again begun taking bumps and has been training Brie Bella for her return. Due to his medical status with WWE, he is not allowed to post any footage of it but he has been training both Brie and himself. His WWE contract expires in one year.

- Paige has been training for her return at the WWE Performance Center and WWE.com posted an article on her comeback noting that she is a free agent and can return on either Raw or Smackdown. She is medically cleared and her return is imminent. The plan as of now is for her to debut on Smackdown. I cannot wait for that backstage segment with her and The New Day. That will be appointment television.

- Nikki Bella finished 4th overall in her first performance on “Dancing with the Stars” this week.

- Shayna Baszler has officially signed a deal with WWE. Not sure whether she will be working immediately on the main roster or in NXT first. The assumption is however with the talk of Ronda Rousey working a date in the near future, she will likely go straight to Smackdown and debut there so that they can get the ball rolling on the Horsewomen vs. Horsewomen angle. She could also however go to NXT and then jump back and forth depending on the need of it.

- While they do have a “Horsewomen vs. Horsewomen” match in the works, the eventual goal is a singles match with Ronda Rousey vs. Charlotte. Yes, Charlotte and NOT Stephanie McMahon as expected. When they did the Wrestlemania angle with Rock and Rousey laying out HHH and Stephanie, they were hoping it would lead to singles matches with both or a mixed tag. Seems like that ship has sailed however with Rock being so busy outside WWE.

- WWE is reviving the old WCW “Starrcade” name for a special thanksgiving weekend live event in the Greensboro Coliseum on Saturday, November 25th. The show will feature a double cage match main event with Jinder Mahal defending the WWE Title against Shinsuke Nakamura and Natalya defending the WWE Smackdown Women’s title against Charlotte. Both matches will be cage matches. There will also be special appearances by WWE Hall of Famer’s Ricky “The Dragon” Steamboat and The Rock & Roll Express. There is talk of making this a Network special however it comes the week after “Survivor Series” and 2 weeks before “The Clash of the Champions”.

- In an interesting note on the above, Cody Rhodes tweeted to Michael Hayes that since they are using the Starrcade name that his dad created, they should book Goldust on the show. Hayes replied that it was already part of the plan and they’d actually want Cody to work the show and team with him.

- Chris Jericho revealed that he plans on hosting “Chris Jericho’s Rock & Wrestling Rager at Sea” which will be a cruise from Miami Florida to Nassau Bahamas and back on Norwegian Cruise Lines. The cruise will feature all sorts of Rock & Roll bands including his own band “Fozzy” as well as the inaugural “Sea of Honor” Tournament featuring 12 Ring of Honor stars and hosted by WWE Hall of Famer Jim Ross. Guests of Jericho’s on the cruise include WWE Hall of Famer Diamond Dallas Page, WWE Hall of Famer Mick Foley, WWE Hall of Famer Ricky “The Dragon” Steamboat, Rey Mysterio, Konnan, Disco Inferno, Shane “Hurricaine” Helms, Lance Storm, Don Callis and more. The Cruise will run next year from October 27th 2018 through October 31st 2018.

- Ric Flair revealed that he is confined to using a walker to get around for the immediate future and possibly permanently and that he is no longer allowed to drink alcohol again. In an interview with “People” Magazine, Flair admitted to being an alcoholic and noted that all of his latest physical problems were caused by alcohol abuse. He went into the doctor in August for stomach pain and ended up undergoing kidney failure, congestive heart failure and had to have some of his bowels removed. He was informed after he made it out that he was given a 20% chance to live when he was placed in a medically induced coma and doctors actually told his daughter, WWE Superstar Charlotte, before he went into surgery that they didn’t expect him to survive the operation.

- Flair was finally released from the hospital yesterday and is now home.

- E! has announced that the upcoming season of “Total Divas” will debut on November 1st at 9:00 pm ET. That is the same timeslot that “Total Bellas” is airing in right now. The season finale will air on January 31st which coincides with the show’s 100th episode thus making them ripe for syndication if they want.

- As an FYI…Natalya winning the Smackdown Women’s Title is in direct correlation to “Total Divas” as the season finale will likely conclude with her winning the belt.

- I totally had no idea that Alexa Bliss was engaged to NXT wrestler Buddy Murphy. Their relationship will be featured on Total Divas this season and her struggles with wanting to succeed while he struggled in developmental.

- Yes, they will acknowledge Carmella and Big Cass’ relationship as well.

- Former WWE Star Dave Batista will be co-starring with Sylvester Stallone in “Escape Plan 3”. This coming despite the fact that “Escape Plan 2” has NOT been released yet and is set to be released in April 2018.

- WWE released a fan survey trying to gauge interest in what kind of WWE Network shows people would be interested in if they separated their Network by “pay tiers”. Examples WWE offered were the following:

  • Ring of Honor (historic and new programing)
  • House shows/Live events (select shows airing live on the Network)

  • WWE SMACKDOWN WOMEN’S TITLE: Natalya © vs. Charlotte
  • WWE TAG TEAM TITLES: The New Day © vs. The Usos
  • GLOBAL FORCE WRESTLING NEWS and NOTES:

    - Just when you think this company, in ANY INCARNATION cannot get any worse or stoop any lower, I saw a clip floating on social media of the GFW Tournament that aired for the international “One Night Only” PPV commitments. The actual tournament was taped over 2 years ago as Jeff Jarrett was shopping the taping around to try and get a television deal. Anyway, since the show was being aired 2 years later, GFW had their announce team record new audio for it. As Jarrett is cutting a promo mid-ring noting that “The Bullet Club” of “Machine Gun” Karl Anderson & Doc Gallows will be here. Suddenly music interrupts Jarrett and out walks Bobby Roode. The announcers note, and I quote:

“That is Bobby Roode, he’s been wrestling all over the world. He’s the current NXT Champion and has made the jump to GFW!!!”

Go ahead, I will let you read that last sentence again and let it soak in for a second. Ok, done? How in the f*cking hell? What in the f*cking hell? Why in the f*cking hell? I cannot comprehend how GFW can be so goddamn carny as to claim that Roode “jumped ship” to GFW all because they were too f*cking lazy or too cheap to tape new footage for PPV’s with their current roster that they air over 2 year old footage and try to pass it off as new. WOW.

    - Anthem Sports announced that the “Bound for Glory” PPV on November 5th will be taking place from Ottawa Canada. It is extremely interesting to note that in the press release by Anthem Sports, there was not a single reference to Global Force Wrestling or GFW. Instead, the promotion was listed as “Impact Wrestling” which signals that it is entirely possible that they have severed ways with Jeff Jarrett or Jarrett severed ways with them. Jarrett still owns the name Global Force Wrestling and while negotiations were ongoing about Anthem getting the rights to use it from double J, nothing was finalized. So with the switch back to Impact for the press release, it means nothing is going to be finalized.

    - Good thing that they did not create all new title belts that say GFW on them since they didn’t own the name…..oh wait…..

    - Jim Cornette is 100% done with Impact. He will NOT be at the Bound for Glory PPV as noted last week. He was set to finish up at that event but they have been forced to part ways before the event due to Cornette not being allowed into Canada due to his criminal record. Essentially the American Top Team/Dan Lambert angle is done since there is no Jeff Jarrett or Jim Cornette to feud with Lambert as an authority figure representing Impact.

    - Following BFG, the plan is to tape the entire week of Impact Tapings so that they can run through January.

Ring of Honor / Lucha Underground / Independent / International News and Notes:

    - In a story that will effect independent wrestling moving forward, FloSports, owner of FloSlam is suing WWN (Evolve’s parent company) for $1,000,000 claiming that they were intentionally misled about their streaming numbers.

    - Davey Richards, who upon leaving Impact has taken a ton of independent bookings including for Evolve has once again jacked up his knee severely requiring surgery again. He will be out of action for several months. Ouch.

    - WWE, showing their strong relationship with Evolve is loaning Cedric Alexander to them to replace Richards on this weekend’s shows. Alexander will be wrestling against Zack Sabre Jr. tonight and Fred Yehi tomorrow.

    - Sexy Starr has been removed from all AAA bookings in October. So as noted, she is likely gone from the promotion. At least for the next several months.

    - There is no word on a season 4 for Lucha Underground but most in the company believe that the promotion will be DEAD at the end of the current season that is airing. No one has stepped up to fund the show. El Rey only funded season 1 and then couldn’t sustain the costs following that. Two backers stepped in for season 2 and season 3 but are unwilling to fund season 4 since they have not made a profit yet. In all honesty, short of being willing to blow through money, I cannot see anyone willing to step up since there is no financial incentive to do so. This company does not have a business model to make money. So without someone who has deep pockets and being willing to blow money aimlessly, LU is dead.

RING OF HONOR “DEATH BEFORE DISHONOR” PPV is TONIGHT from Las Vegas Nevada and the line-up is as follows:

  • ROH WORLD TITLE: Cody © vs. Minoru Suzuki
  • ROH TAG TEAM TITLES: The Young Bucks (Matt & Nick Jackson) © vs. The Motor City Machine Guns (Chris Sabin & Alex Shelly)
  • ROH TRIOS TITLES: The Young Bucks (Matt & Nick Jackson)& Hangman Page © vs. the winner of The Briscoes (Mark & Jay Briscoe) & Bully Ray vs. The Kingdom (Matt Taven/T.K.O’Ryan/Vinny Marseglia)
  • ROH TV TITLE: Kushida © vs. Kenny King
  • Silas Young vs. Jay Lethal in a LAST MAN STANDING MATCH
  • Punishment Martinez vs. Jay White in a STREET FIGHT
  • Chuck Taylor vs. Marty Scurll
  • MMA News and Notes:

    - As of now, it appears that UFC 215 has drawn the LOWEST PPV buyrate in company history as the show is trending to do UNDER 100,000 buys.

    - Michael Bisping noted last week that he feels confident that his fight with George St. Pierre will be GSP’s final MMA fight. GSP has made it public that his next loss in MMA will in fact be his last so essentially he will be “one and done” if he loses to Bisping. Bisping has also insinuated that he may retire if he beats GSP. That would vacate the Middleweight Title and Luke Rockhold vs. Robert Whitaker would be the next undisputed title fight. If he doesn’t retire following a win, we will get Bisping vs. Whitaker. If GSP wins, we get him vs. Whitaker.

    - Jon Jones hearing for his failed drug test will be held on October 17th in front of the California State Athletic Commission. It is there where his defense for why he had Turanibol in his system will be revealed. If he has a defense.

    - Ronda Rousey’s longtime coach Edmond Taverdyan noted that they speak a few times per week but he is still unsure if she will be returning to MMA. He did note that he wants her to fight Cris “Cyborg” Justino should she return which in my eyes is the biggest f*cking mistake they could make because she would get murdered by her. If they did fight, it would be at 145 lbs.

    - Matt Brown announced that his November 11th fight against Diego Sanchez in Norfork will be his final MMA fight and he is retiring from the sport.

    - Props to Thiago Alves. He pulled out of last week’s fight he had in Pittsburgh due to wanting to stay in Florida with his family following Hurricane Irma.

    - Last week Floyd Mayweather purchased a $25.5 million mansion in Los Angeles California that is 15,000 square feet and has a guest house.

    - ESPN is currently in production on a “30 for 30” documentary on the birth of UFC and their first ever event on November 12, 1993.

    - Bellator Welterweight Champion Douglas Lima will defend the title on January 20th against Rory MacDonald in Los Angeles.

    - Tomorrow night on Spike TV is a pretty damn solid Bellator show which features fights with Benson Henderson, Roy Nelson, Aaron Pico, Lorenz Larkin & Paul Daley.

UFC 216 is on Saturday, October 7th, 2017 from Las Vegas Nevada and the line-up is as follows:

  • INTERIM UFC LIGHTWEIGHT TITLE: Tony Ferguson vs. Kevin Lee
  • UFC FLYWEIGHT TITLE: Demetrious Johnson © vs. Ray Borg
  • Nik Lentz vs. Will Brooks
  • Paige VanZant vs. Jessica Eye
  • Stephen Thompson vs. Jorge Masvidal
  • Fabricio Werdum vs. Derrick Lewis
  • UFC 217 is on Saturday, November 4th, 2017 from New York, New York and the line-up is as follows:

  • UFC MIDDLEWEIGHT TITLE: Michael Bisping © vs. George St. Pierre
  • UFC BANTAMWEIGHT TITLE: Cody Garbrandt © vs. T.J. Dillashaw
  • UFC WOMEN’S STRAWWEIGHT TITLE: Joanna Jerdzejczyk © vs. Rose Namajunas
  • Johnny Hendricks vs. Paulo Borrachinha
  • Mickey Gall vs. Randy Brown
  • UFC 218 is on Saturday, December 2nd, 2017 from Detroit Michigan and the line-up is as follows:

  • TBD vs. TBD
  • UFC 219 is on Saturday, December 30th, 2017 from Las Vegas Nevada and the line-up is as follows:

  • TBD vs. TBD

    - THIS LINK is for LIFE. Thank you soldiers. WELCOME HOME BLOG

    - BONUS Random ARTICLE of the week: I legit cannot think of any U.S. President in history that would just threaten to level an entire country and race like this. Yes we are being provoked by North Korea. Yes Kim Jong-Un is a maniac. Yes we need to put them in their place but come on, you have to mince your words and speak diplomatically. Use a filter dude. Don’t just toss out words like destroy.

    - BONUS Random ARTICLE of the week PART 1: I did NOT see this coming. A huge part of my life both as an adult and a child could be coming to an end. WOW. Shocked.

    - BONUS Random ARTICLE of the week PART 2: As sad as this is, I am honestly surprised that this has not happened more often. You would think that situations like these could happen more frequently with twins.

    - BONUS Random ARTICLE of the week PART 3: P*ssification of America. Honestly, they were signing the lyrics of a song. They weren’t saying anything about hanging, lynching, killing, etc. They weren’t repeating it over and over. They were signing the lyrics of a goddamn song. SMH.

    - BONUS Random ARTICLE of the week PART 4: I think they found her. Hopefully their family can finally find peace after all these years.

    - BONUS Random ARTICLE of the week PART 5: To the surprise of no one. But this is definitely a HUGE BLOW to the NFL and Professional Wrestling.

    - Next week is it. The new fall season begins with some of my shows coming back such as “Chicago P.D.”, “This Is Us”, “Law & Order: SVU”, “Designated Survivor” and “The Inhumans”. That is in addition to me jumping back on the “General Hospital” daytime bandwagon as Steve Burton is back on the show likely reprising his role of Jason Morgan and other shows. It is a busy TV season for me. If there are any shows you think I should check out, let me know so I can read up on it and see if it deserves a try. My usual mantra is to let a show run for one full season so that I do not get burned by a cancellation on something I like however that has also caused me to miss out on shows such as “Breaking Bad”, “The Walking Dead”, and “Blue Bloods” etc. So I think I will throw out that rule and go back to watching shows that have buzz or are good.

    - R.I.P. to boxing legend Jake LaMotta forever immortalized in the film “Raging Bull” with Robert DeNiro. He passed away earlier this week at age 95.

    - The official trailer for “Avengers: Infinity War” will be released during ABC’s debut of “The Inhumans” on September 29th.

    - The first OFFICIAL Trailer for “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” debuts during Monday Night Football on October 9th.

    - Actress Brie Larson has reported to the set of Avengers 4 currently filming in Atlanta.

    - I have not seen “IT” yet but apparently everyone else in the world did as it is closing in on $400 million worldwide already. WOW.

    - Universal Pictures announced that they are bringing back the “Halloween” franchise as a SEQUEL and that Jamie Lee Curtis will be reprising her role as Laurie Strode. 58 YEAR OLD JAMIE LEE CURTIS.

    - And Hollywood continues to ruin my childhood/teenage years. “True Lies”, a classic Arnold Schwarzenegger movie is being rebooted as a television series. F*CK!!!!

    - Production of season 2 of Marvel/Netflix’s “Jessica Jones” has wrapped. No release date has been announced yet.

    - I’ve been asked how come I haven’t been following the news on D.C.’s/WB’s live action “Titans” web series. To be honest, it is hard to put faith in D.C./WB and I am flabbergasted by the fact that they are wasting this for the web. They have cast actor Brenton Thwaites as Dick Grayson/Nightwing for the show but they plan on having a different actor playing Nightwing in the DCU.

    - It has felt like an eternity but apparently Avatar 2 has officially begun production this week as principal photography has begun.

    - Actress Linda Hamilton has revealed that she will be returning for the relaunch of the Terminator franchise reprising her role as Sarah Connor. The film will take place 3 decades after T-2. WOW.

    - NBC announced that for the first time EVER in the show’s history, Saturday Night Live will air LIVE coast to coast for the entire season. It will air at 11:30 pm ET, 10:30 CT, 9:30 MT and 8:30 PT. usually the west coast feed would air on tape delay.

    - Season 2 of G.L.O.W. on Netflix begins filming on October 16th. If you haven’t checked out season 1 yet, you should. It is a fun show.

    - In somewhat disappointing news, “The Defenders” has been Marvel’s least watched Netflix show to date. Some drop off was expected after that debacle of “Iron Fist” but still, this is troubling. Hopefully “The Punisher” brings back the viewers when it is released sometime over the next few months.
