T.G.I.F. with Matt Dawgs: #414

Good day to you all and welcome to We Want Insanity. I am your host for today, Matt Dawgs and this is my column. Today is the end of the work week and the time to look back at all the goings-on over the past seven days as I wrap it up with a bow and spout it out bit by bit. Buckle up. Enjoy the ride.

IMPORTANT MATT NOTE:: I am hoping that you readers have taken the time to lend a hand and donated to the JAIDAN STRONG cause for me. I’d really appreciate it if you did; as little as $5 can go a long way. If not, it isn’t a big deal but please at least SHARE THE LINK. I get that finances can be tough for some but taking the time to share a link via your social media doesn’t cost a dime. I’d appreciate it greatly as one of your friends or family members may be able to help out. Thanks.

BONUS MATT NOTE: Kneel. Don’t Kneel. Who the f*ck cares? It really does nothing in the grand scheme of things. Yes Colin Kapernick was kneeling to protest police brutality. How does his kneeling help anything though? It really doesn’t change anything. Now #45 is claiming it is disrespectful to our soldiers and veterans and country as a whole. Actually, it isn’t. Soldiers will tell you that they fight and risk their lives for THAT VERY RIGHT. So that people can choose to stand or kneel because American is about FREEDOM!!!! Now some athletes are doing it. Some aren’t. Some teams are staying in the locker room during the anthem. Others are coming out with their owners and kneeling. WHO THE F*CK CARES?!?!? Other than making a spectacle out of themselves and the game, it isn’t doing anything at all. It isn’t stopping police brutality. It isn’t ending the horror in Puerto Rico. It isn’t stopping the impending war with North Korea. #45 saying that Pat Tillman left his lucrative multi-million position in the NFL to fight in the Army and he would be disgraced by the kneeling. Tillman’s widow goes on the record noting that he would 100% support the player’s right to kneel. I cannot even believe that I am typing all of this on the subject. Such a stupid and trivial thing to be arguing about.

BONUS MATT NOTE PART 2: The Hef. Not much more I can say. The man lived the ultimate life and passed away on Wednesday at age 91. I don’t think I need to go into details about the life he lived, the successes he had and the lifestyle he created. R.I.P. Hef.

- “No Mercy” was an ok show built around a very good John Cena vs. Roman Reigns match and a just ok Brock Lesnar vs. Braun Strowman match. Honestly, I was disappointed in Brock vs. Braun. They had potential to do significantly better than they did but they just didn’t click. Reigns and Cena did click although it was extreme overkill for Reigns to kick out of that many “Attitude Adjustment” finishers; only to be pinned by ONE spear. Same thing happened in the Brock vs. Braun match. Brock kicks out of 2 powerslams only to win after ONE F-5. I guess the whole point was to build Brock and Roman for Mania but I am still upset that they won’t alter their plans when they could have hitched their wagon to Braun.

- While not retiring despite what appeared to be a “good bye” at “No Mercy”, John Cena did note that his career is winding down and he is no longer physically capable of maintaining a full schedule. His body is breaking down and he said that when he realizes that he has become a step slower in the ring, he will retire as him not being able to give 100% would be a disservice to the fans. His body is breaking down after doing this for 15 years now with little to no time off until recently and his recent time off isn’t really time off since he isn’t home resting but instead, still working on his outside projects.

- Cena missed RAW this week as he was in Los Angeles at the Dancing with the Stars taping along with Charlotte to support Nikki Bella.

- Enzo Amore is a full-fledged heel now. He is going to be the lead heel in the Cruiserweight Division while Neville has turned babyface all the while maintaining the edge he had from becoming heel.

- Enzo is looking to drop a rap album. This is tricky because with WWE’s support and a producer credit, he could essentially drop one. But if he becomes successful and is either released or leaves WWE on his own, he can’t be Enzo Amore anymore. That means he would have to drop the album under a different name or change his name if he plans on continuing in the rap game after he leaves.

- The beat down segment of Roman Reigns on RAW ended with the Miz-Tourage doing the Shield “fist bump”. This is exactly leading to what you think it is, a Shield reunion. Only problem is, it is against the Miz-Tourage. It is the same thing as when WWE wasted The Rock and John Cena teaming up at Survivor Series a few years back against Miz and R-Truth. I mean, seriously?

- Now with Dean Ambrose losing the Braun Strowman on RAW and Seth Rollins looking to face him next week, I would be a little bit ok with Miz and Strowman and some combination of Axel or Dallas against the Shield. Strowman gives them some credibility. Either way, the Shield is going to get a massive pop when the reunite or they are going to get booed out of the building because of how much hatred the crowd has for Reigns.

- I am telling you, just turn them heel and let them run roughshod over the roster. Push Brock, Braun and Samoa Joe when he returns as babyfaces. Or better yet, put Joe on Smackdown. Joe vs. A.J. and Joe vs. Nakamura and Joe vs. Orton. Hell, even Joe vs. Corbin as Joe was the person to get the best match out of Corbin to date. He could be used better there and the brand could use him

- Finn Balor is ready to move onto Brock. This should be fun. Not fun in the ways like Okada vs. Omega is fun. More like fun in watching a train wreck. I cannot see Lesnar selling for Balor. I love Balor, don’t get me wrong. But it looks like such a physical mis-match and Balor’s offense isn’t exactly like watching UFC.

- Wyatt needs a makeover or a babyface run or a stable or something. He just doesn’t do it for me anymore. Ball dropped and cannot be recovered.

- Goldust is a heel again. Thank you for answering my question as I was unsure. Now is he going to get his protégé that he mentioned last month or is that going to be forgotten?

- Mickie James the filler in between Alexa Bliss and Asuka. I am ok with it. I like Mickie and would be ok with her getting a real push. We do know that Bliss isn’t losing the title until Asuka though.

- Do you guys remember when Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn fought for the “FINAL TIME EVER” on RAW over a year and a half ago? Good times.

- Props to Zayn though as his promo was GOLD and passionate. I just wish WWE would give him something. He could be a solid mid-card star right now. Hell, he could be a main event level star if they just believed in him.

- Remember when Shelton Benjamin was brought back and he and Chad Gable were a thing? Well now Benjamin is just subbed in Jason Jordan’s old spot and nothing is once again being done with Gable. Honestly, who did Gable piss off? He had to get on the wrong side of someone for them to be this spiteful and not use him like he should be used. He is so much better than Jordan in every single way. SMH.

- Can anyone explain to me why Jinder Mahal vs. Shinsuke Nakamura is NOT inside Hell in a Cell when the Singh Brothers constantly interfere in matches?

- PS – I HATE when General Managers and Commissioners get to the building right before the show is about to end. Honestly, Shane McMahon shows up at the building 10 minutes before the show is about to go off the air??

- Gotta admit I am intrigued. Who is turning? Ryder or Rawley?

- Please. Push. Rusev.

- Rusev has all of the tools necessary for being a main event level heel. See Strowman, Braun as an example. Rusev could be a solid monster heel like he was when he debuted. For f*cks sake, #GiveRusevAChance.

- Exactly as I noted although it didn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out, all of the Ziggler nonsense lead up to the return of Bobby Roode. Not for nothing, the money would have been in Roode not debuting until this angle. While his debut was a surprise the Smackdown after Summerslam, imagine the pop he would have got had they waited till this feud to do instead of hot shotting his debut and then having nothing for him in the follow up. They tried to recreate it by keeping him off television for 3 weeks but it wasn’t as massive as it could have been.

- While I have hated the Ziggler skits for weeks, I did pop for his one line to the crowd when he mimicked Taker’s entrance when he said, “What? You guys actually believed you were going to see Undertaker twice in one year? HAHAHA.”

- Samoa Joe revealed that he actually had knee surgery during his time off. He has been working with a torn meniscus since he was in NXT and never had time to correct it. When his knee began acting up on the main roster and locked up on him to the point where he couldn’t bend it that is when WWE iced him. He has needed to surgery for almost a year already but never got it. While recovering, he also had nasal surgery since he had broken his nose several times when wrestling and never had it fixed. He said he was only breathing at about 60% capacity but now feels and sleeps much better. He gave no timetable on his return but when he went down with the injury, it was expected he would return in mid-October. So he should be back soon.

- Adam Cole “Bay Bay” made his in ring debut at NXT. NXT will be interesting with him, Fish and O’Reilly running things. PS, I’d be ok with an eventual six man match with the Shield on the main roster in a year. Just saying.

- WWE confirmed during the “No Mercy” PPV that Asuka will debut at the RAW “TLC” PPV on October 22nd from Minneapolis Minnesota.

- The Bullet Club of Cody, Hangman Page and The Young Bucks invaded RAW on Monday and did similar skits that DX did when they invaded Nitro 15+ years ago. Their antics were recorded for the latest episode of their “Being the Elite” YouTube series.

- Speaking of the Club, Anderson and Gallows will be wrestling gaainst the Rock & Roll Express at the WWE “Starcade” Live Event on November 25th in Greensboro.

- Congrats to Maria and Mike Kanellis as they announced that Maria is expecting the couple’s first child together. Great news.

- Jeff Hardy has suffered a torn rotator cuff that will require surgery. He will miss several months of action while he recovers. Props to Hardy however as contrary to what WWE wants you to believe, he did NOT suffer the injury last week on RAW. He has actually been working through the tear since JULY. He will be a photo finish for returning for Wrestlemania. Now is the time to pull the trigger on “Broken/Woken” Matt Hardy. It is the only alternative as having Matt Hardy as/is will NOT be a good thing for his career.

- Primo Colon is back in action and worked live events this weekend teaming with cousin Epico.

- Johnny Moss, wrestler from the U.K. and one of Finn Balor’s original trainers before he went to the New Japan Dojo was hired as a trainer at the WWE Performance Center. He was one of the head trainers of the “School of Hardknocks and Hammerlocks”.

- WWE.com had an article about Goldberg’s 20th Anniversary from his debut. In the article, they had an exclusive interview with Goldberg and he teased another comeback one day. He noted that it won’t take him nearly the same amount of time to get ready for a match then it did last time.

- The WWE Network has a WWE 24 Special on November 13th chronicling the one-year anniversary of his return.

- WWE has added a “Remembering Bobby Heenan” playlist on the WWE Network.

- WWE has sent a “cease and desist” letter to the Young Bucks for the phrase and hand gesture for “Too Sweet”. It is an interesting scenario because it is a cease and desist letter and NOT a straight up lawsuit citing damages. However, WWE did not trademark the phrase/gesture until 2015 when Finn Balor, Luke Gallows and Karl Anderson signed with the promotion. The Young Bucks have been mimicking the old Clique signal/phrase since 2013. So essentially it would be difficult for WWE to successfully sue and win against the Bucks, in no way do the Bucks have the financial means of fighting WWE on it. WWE would tie it up in litigation and cost the Bucks hundreds of thousands of dollars, possibly millions. The Bucks pulled all merchandise from Pro Wrestling Tees and their own website that referenced the saying.

- WWE is interested in Erica Wiebe, 2016 Olympic Gold Medalist. She was invited and attended the Mae Young Classic and worked out for a week at the Performance Center. She has expressed interest in joining the WWE but as of now, she is focused on the 2020 Olympics so she wouldn’t join until after that event.

- Former WWE Diva Kaitlyn posted photos on her Instagram page of her training in the ring with her noting that it was her first time training wrestling again since she left WWE several years ago. She is in great physical shape as she was a fitness model both before and after her WWE stints and is only 30 years old (turns 31 next week) so if she wants a WWE return, she is more than capable of having one. She left WWE to get married to a professional body builder but was recently divorced a few months ago. Hence the comeback.

- Nikki Bella came in 5th place on Dancing with the Stars this week. She scored 21 out of 30 which isn’t bad for someone with no dancing background.

- In his upcoming ESPN “30 for 30” special, Ric Flair reveals that he estimates that he has bedded over 10,000 women in his lifetime. Not for nothing but considering the wrestling business was what it was when he started in the 70’s and has been wrestling for over 40 years, I believe it. He probably has more than that to be honest.

- Dwayne “the Rock” Johnson and ex-wife/business partner Dani Garcia have opened an advertising agency. This to go with his 7 Bucks Entertainment Production Company. That on top of his acting career. Jesus H. Christ this man is making a hell of a lot of money. Major props to him.

- WWE is actually assisting in the divorce proceedings for Bray Wyatt a.k.a. Windham Rotunda. His soon to be ex-wife Samantha Rotunda has requested all pay records for Wyatt from 2010 to present. WWE has offered to produce the documents including 1099 forms, booking contracts, and merchandise/licensing records for that period noting however that the cost of compliance for those records would cost in the range of $247,500 - $483,000 which would be responsible by the requester (Samantha). Obviously that is not something she is going to shell out.

- WWE and sports as we know it may be in for a MAJOR change soon as Boston University doctors may have found a test that can detect CTE in living patients. CTE has only been able to be diagnosed while examining the brain of a deceased person. If they can perfect this test, there is zero chance WWE, the NFL, MMA promotions or boxing promotions allow athletes to compete with CTE. Thus, we will see several retirements or all of the above sports (as well as possibly hockey) have to revamp their complete rules and regulations.

WWE “HELL IN A CELL” PPV is on Sunday, October 8th, 2017 from Detroit Michigan and the line-up is as follows:

  • WWE TITLE: Jinder Mahal © w/The Singh Brothers vs. Shinsuke Nakamura
  • Kevin Owens vs. Shane McMahon IN HELL IN A CELL
  • WWE SMACKDOWN WOMEN’S TITLE: Natalya © vs. Charlotte
  • WWE TAG TEAM TITLES: The New Day © vs. The Usos IN HELL IN A CELL
  • Bobby Roode vs. Dolph Ziggler

    - Impact has been continuously taping matches at Triple A in Mexico each weekend with Jeremy Borash in attendance doing commentary with Vampiro. The goal is to have their wrestlers wrestle on the shows against other Impact as well as AAA talent and use those to fill gaps for television tapings in the future. It shows that Impact is international and not just Orlando based.

    - Impact will also be taping at Wrestlecade in November so essentially Impact and WWE will be in the same market at the same time about 30 – 45 minutes away from each other.

Ring of Honor / Lucha Underground / Independent / International News and Notes:

    - Congrats to Kenny King for capturing the ROH TV Title over Kushida at Death Before Dishonor as well as The Motor City Machine Guns of Chris Sabin and Alex Shelly for capturing the ROH Tag Team Titles over the Young Bucks as the same show.

    - Interesting dynamic with The Briscoes and Bully Ray. The way it has been played of late was that they were teasing Bully Ray turning heel on the Briscoes and instead, Jay Briscoe turned heel on Bully Ray with Mark Briscoe unsure of who’s side to be on so he is stuck in between his two partners.

    - 18 days after knee surgery and Kenny Omega returned to action over the weekend wrestling Juice Robinson in a 32 minute match. He did all of his usual spots and moves in it. WOW.

    - Ring of Honor announced that Omega will work all four dates of the upcoming October “Global Wars” tour. He was only booked originally for the October 15th show in Chicago which has set a record attendance number. Omega will defend the IWGP U.S. Title on October 15th in Chicago against Yoshi-Hashi. The Chicago show is SOLD OUT with 2,400 tickets being sold making it the 2nd largest crowd in ROH history.

    - The “Sea of Honor” tournament next year on the Chris Jericho cruise will be for a future ROH Title Shot.

    - It has been announced that Cody Rhodes has signed an exclusive contract with Ring of Honor and will only be working ROH/New Japan dates going forward except for those few minor Indy feds that he has a relationship with. It is a multi-year deal. It is being described as the most generous contract in ROH history. That is of course until Daniel Bryan returns next year.

    - It is not official but it appears that Dalton Castle will be the next ROH star as he is likely going to be the one challenging Cody for the ROH title at “Final Battle” in December. He was scheduled to face Cody this past weekend at “Death Before Dishonor” but that was changed due to Castle’s injury.

    - The latest episode of ”BEING THE ELITE” featuring the Bullet Club “invading” RAW on Monday.

    - Apparently over the last 3 months alone, Hot Topic has sold over 100,000 Young Bucks t-shirts. WOW.

    - Toni Storm unexpectedly captured the World of Stardom championship. In a match against champion Mayu Iwatani, Iwatani dislocated her elbow 2 and a half minutes into the match. She was unable to continue and the referee had to stop the match. Due to this, Storm was awarded the title. Iwatani will miss 3 – 6 months of time as it heals.

    - New Japan Pro Wrestling is bringing back their “Young Lions Cup”. It is a round robin tournament reserved for up and coming talent that New Japan sees as future stars. The tournament was a NJPW staple from 1986 – 2005 before it was stopped. Past winners include Masahiro Chono, Keiichi Yamada (Jushin Liger before he was Jushin Liger), Hiroyoshi Yamamoto (now known as Hiroyoshi Tenzan), Satoshi Kojima and the last winner, Hirooki Goto. This tournament will feature:

  • Ren Narita
  • Tetsuhiro Yagi
  • Katsuya Kitamura
  • Tomoyuki Oka
  • Hirai Kawato
  • Shota Umino
  • - Any hope for a FloSports/WWN resolution to their relationship is completely over as FloSports cancelled the Evolve PPV at the last minute last Friday and FloSports announced that they are no longer going to hold any WWN events on their system anymore.

    - THIS isn’t good for Evolve.

    - Props to the Crash promotion as they are running a FREE show on October 5th. The only entry fee will be donations of food, clothes, etc for those suffering from the earthquakes in Mexico.

    - Billy Corgan will officially begin his ownership role of the NWA brand on October 1st. Once he takes control, no independent promotion will be able to use the NWA name or anything affiliated with the NWA name without his permission.

    - World Wresting Council in Puerto Rico cancelled their anniversary show for obvious reasons. With P.R. being a disaster area, there is no telling when the show will be rescheduled for. Rebuilding is the first step for the country as they are really damaged and most of the island is still without power more than a week after Hurricane Irma made landfall as the worst hurricane to hit the island in 85 years.

73 year old WWE Hall of Famer TERRY FUNK returned to action last weekend teaming with fellow WWE Hall of Famers The Rock & Roll Express as they took on WWE Hall of Famer Jerry “The King” Lawler, his son Brian Christopher and Doug Gilbert.

    - Props to Ohio Valley Wrestling as they had a benefit show for Matt Cappotelli’s medical expenses last week and raised $6,000 for him.

    MMA News and Notes:

    - They DIDN’T do it. The latest is that Floyd Mayweather vs. Conor McGregor drew 4.4 million PPV buys thus falling 200,000 short of Mayweather vs. Pacquiao. Of course however the show was the most pirated sporting event/PPV of all time thus meaning that if half of those people would have paid for the show they would have beaten the record handedly.

    - For those interested, the Canelo Alvarez vs. Gennady Golovkin fight did 1.3 million PPV buys and is the 3rd largest gate in boxing history as they did over $27 million.

    - Remember that new home that Floyd purchased for $25 million in Los Angeles that I mentioned? Well he put up a wall sized portrait of Conor McGregor in it.

    - The “Von Flue” choke. One of the HARDEST chokes to put on someone since it requires you to be in someone else’s guillotine while you jockey for side mount and end up using your shoulder against your opponent’s neck to choke them. Going into last weekend, it had only been done 4 times in the history of UFC with two of those times being done by Ovince Saint Preux. Well after last weekend, we can make that 5 times with OSP doing it for a 3rd as he made Yushin Okami pass out unconscious with it. WOW. Amazing finish to a fight.

    - Paige VanZant is OFF the October 7th UFC 216 fight vs. Jessica Eye due to a herniated disc in her back.

    - Aaron Pico had his 2nd MMA fight in Bellator last Saturday and it went exactly how his 1st fight SHOULD have gone. He knocked out his opponent in scary fashion as it looked like he legit killed him. It took Justin Linn several minutes to get up and regain his composure as they were ready to have him stretchered out of the cage

    - I really was shocked and disappointed when Benson Henderson left UFC for Bellator last year as I saw Henderson as a name and a star. He has since proven me wrong since making the jump to Bellator as his skills are apparently declining. He lost last weekend to Patricky Freire in a boring as paint dry fight. He just isn’t as motivated as he was in UFC and seems to have slowed down a bit.

    - Not that this means anything since all live locally but at Saturday’s Bellator MMA show in the audience were Gina Carano, Herschel Walker and Frank Shamrock.

    - Despite the rumors, Conor McGregor is NOT fighting Nate Diaz on December 30th. McGregor’s trainer John Kavanagh noted that he is hoping to have Conor return on St. Patrick’s Day on March 17th in New York.

    - Despite the fact that he should call it a career, Rashad Evans is looking to move back up to light heavyweight and fight again.

    - Rizin in Japan has announced a grappling match between Frank Shamrock and Kazushi Sakuraba. I don’t even know what to say to this.

UFC 216 is on Saturday, October 7th, 2017 from Las Vegas Nevada and the line-up is as follows:

  • INTERIM UFC LIGHTWEIGHT TITLE: Tony Ferguson vs. Kevin Lee
  • UFC FLYWEIGHT TITLE: Demetrious Johnson © vs. Ray Borg
  • Nik Lentz vs. Will Brooks
  • Stephen Thompson vs. Jorge Masvidal
  • Fabricio Werdum vs. Derrick Lewis
  • UFC 217 is on Saturday, November 4th, 2017 from New York, New York and the line-up is as follows:

  • UFC MIDDLEWEIGHT TITLE: Michael Bisping © vs. George St. Pierre
  • UFC BANTAMWEIGHT TITLE: Cody Garbrandt © vs. T.J. Dillashaw
  • UFC WOMEN’S STRAWWEIGHT TITLE: Joanna Jerdzejczyk © vs. Rose Namajunas
  • Johnny Hendricks vs. Paulo Borrachinha
  • Mickey Gall vs. Randy Brown
  • UFC 218 is on Saturday, December 2nd, 2017 from Detroit Michigan and the line-up is as follows:

  • Henry Cejudo vs. Sergio Pettis
  • Alistair Overeem vs. Francis Ngannou
  • UFC 219 is on Saturday, December 30th, 2017 from Las Vegas Nevada and the line-up is as follows:

  • Dominick Cruz vs. Jimmie Rivera
  • Cynthia Cavillo vs. Carla Esparza

    - DC has thrown in the towel and given up. DCU Head honcho Geoff Johns revealed in an interview that WB/DC is deemphasizing on the idea of having a shared cinematic universe and having their films cross over in the same vein that Marvel does. Following the release of “Justice League”, the films they release will no longer share continuity or a timeline thus meaning they do not have to be in chronological order or connect in any way. There may be references to other members of the League but that is the extent.

    - Production on “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” has officially wrapped.

    - According to VARIETY, ABC was FORCED by Disney to renew “Marvel’s: Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” as they were going to cancel it last season. So that is a good thing to know that Disney wanted it around so it stayed around. That means the only way it gets cancelled is if it BOMBS miserably or if Disney wants it to bomb.

    - It has been confirmed that “Terminator 6” will be a direct sequel to “Terminator 2”. So “Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines”, “Terminator: Salvation” and “Terminator: Genysis” never existed in this universe.

    - Over in the Netflix universe, the producers of “Fuller House” which just premiered the 3rd season last week, confirmed that they are 100% done calling the Olsen twins to make an appearance on the show.

    - Damon Lindelof has officially begun production on the HBO “Watchmen” series. It will be based on the comic book with a completely new cast from the Zack Snyder film. Essentially it will be the same story as the film only spread out into seasons.

    - I didn’t realize how much I missed “This Is Us” until watching the return this past week. Such a well-acted and well written show.
