T.G.I.F. with Matt Dawgs: #416

Good day to you all and welcome to We Want Insanity. I am your host for today, Matt Dawgs and this is my column. Today is the end of the work week and the time to look back at all the goings-on over the past seven days as I wrap it up with a bow and spout it out bit by bit. Buckle up. Enjoy the ride.

IMPORTANT MATT NOTE:: I am hoping that you readers have taken the time to lend a hand and donated to the JAIDAN STRONG cause for me. I’d really appreciate it if you did; as little as $5 can go a long way. If not, it isn’t a big deal but please at least SHARE THE LINK. I get that finances can be tough for some but taking the time to share a link via your social media doesn’t cost a dime. I’d appreciate it greatly as one of your friends or family members may be able to help out. Thanks.

BONUS MATT NOTE: R.I.P to Harvey Weinstein's career. Jesus H. Christ I don't know if I have ever seen a powerful executive fall so far so quickly. World just completely turned upside down and inside out. But...you reap what you sew. Couldn't have happened to a bigger assh*le.

- The big story of this week is that apparently before RAW began on Monday, Neville quit the WWE and left the arena. He was originally booked to face Enzo Amore in the main event of the show and lose to him in a lumberjack match. There is likely more to the story but he was not pleased with creative and gave his notice before leaving. I do not know if WWE has had contact with him since Monday or if either side has tried to smooth things over but what I do know is that he will likely be unable to compete anywhere else until his contract expires or he is released. Knowing WWE, they may freeze his contract meaning that time will be added to it until he comes back or negotiates his release.

- In another interesting departure from the promotion, longtime creative team member and former ROH Star Jimmy Jacobs was let go from his position following him posting a photo of himself with the Bullet Club to his social media account the day that they “invaded” Raw. WWE management was not pleased with this even though he did not violate any rules they felt it was unprofessional and let him go.

- Of course they wouldn’t be who they are without commenting. The Young Bucks posted on twitter following the news of Jimmy Jacobs being released for taking a photo with them: ”Hey Bryan Danielson, you should take a photo with us too.

- Hell in a Cell was on Sunday and was an ok show headlined by a solid main event that saw Shane McMahon dive off the top of the cell again only to miss due to SAMI ZAYN helping KEVIN OWENS!!!! YAY!!! Owens and Zayn are going to be awesome as a heel duo running Smackdown.

- Shinsuke Nakamura BURIED DEAD. Clean loss to Jinder Mahal and that should tell you all you need to know about Vince McMahon’s opinion on him. I get keeping the title on Jinder since the India tour is coming up but ugh, all momentum for Shinsuke is over with and he is just a guy.

- Mahal by the way is working through what appears to be a fairly serious shoulder injury. He was held off of Smackdown this week but if you notice, while still lean and ripped, he has lost significant muscle mass and looks smaller.

- The Usos recaptured the WWE Smackdown tag team titles from the New Day in an awesome match. These two teams work great together and really pulled out all the stops. This was one of those times however where the no blood policy really hinders WWE as this match could have used it. I do like the fact that on Smackdown, the Usos either turned babyface or at least tweeners as they showed props to the New Day by shaking hands with them like men do. The Usos have been under career resurgence with their new gimmick and have been making the most of their opportunity. Major props to them.

- RAW was a one note show built around the reuniting of The Shield. They were booked strong and got over HUGE with them beating up Miz, Sheamus and Cesaro and then later coming for revenge on Braun Strowman by laying him out with the triple powerbomb through the announce table. Despite Roman Reigns being public enemy number one for YEARS in the fans eyes, they ate up everything the Shield did on Monday which is telling because there was definitely still mileage in them when they broke up years ago and turned Rollins. To be perfectly honest however, while I am ok with the short term booking of them because they can draw as a unit, I am 100% on board with Roman turning on them down the road and becoming a full-fledged heel following this run.

- I am NOT a fan of Braun Strowman being added to the match thus making it 4 on 3. I really wish they would “injure” Miz and then have Braun take his place or never have put Braun in it to begin with. I am sure they could have found someone for Braun to squash if they needed him on the PPV that badly.

- I’d be ok with Samoa Joe returning and teaming with the Shield. He could claim Braun was the reason he was injured and want revenge although that does take away from the Shield reuniting. It should have just been left as 3 on 3.

- Commentary is a simple thing. As a babyface commentator for example, all you need to do is sell the product and be honest in doing so. As a heel, you put over heels and lie/smudge the truth a bit. Booker T as far as I know is a babyface color commentator. So him bashing both Michael Cole and Corey Graves for “never being in the ring” is A) Dumb and B) not true since both men have been. SMH.

- Man, if only Enzo could wrestle. He’d easily be the 2nd coming of The Rock/Steve Austin/John Cena. He is so full of charisma and cuts excellent promos as both a heel or face it is amazing. The Loserweight Division? GOLD.

- So a women’s match to determine who fights Asuka at TLC. A pinfall is made 2 minutes in right after Michael Cole notes that the first person to win gets the shot. Then, he immediately notes after the pinfall that it is an elimination match. Hey creative, how about you guys inform the announce team about the match before you make changes to it?

- Boy does Bray Wyatt need to be repackaged or what? This Sister Abagail thing is LAME. And it is absolutely not doing Finn Balor any favors. He needs to move on ASAP.

- While Bo Dallas was off TV this week due to “selling” the beating he took at the hands of Roman Reigns last week, Bray Wyatt was also off of television this week. Yes, he was in the Sister Abigail revealing video that aired but that was pre-taped and he was not at the show. Both Dallas and Wyatt missed live events this weekend as well. As far as I can tell, neither of them is injured so one must assume that it is “family related” for their absence although I have not been able to confirm that.

- I am all for the Usos being tweeners. Their act is great. They are also going to tear it down with Gable and Benjamin. Gable is way underrated by the powers that be in WWE. He is going to be HUGE if he is given the chance.

- Carmella is HOT. That is all.

- Look, I am ok with Nattie as Women’s Champ because honestly, she works hard, works well and deserves it. Especially since every woman on the roster gets a shot to hold it. But if she was going to tap out Charlotte last week on Smackdown, then why’d she not lose the title at the PPV on Sunday? That makes Charlotte look pretty bad since she tapped cleanly. I get wanting to keeo the feud going but for what, why have Charlotte tap? Wouldn’t better booking have been to have Charlotte almost win, one of Nattie’s partners interfere and then Nattie pin one of Charlotte’s partners?

- Kevin Owens is far and away the best promo on the active roster. It isn’t even close.

- Although Sami Zayn did give him a run for his money because his promo explaining his heel turn was magical. As I noted above, they are going to make a great duo. Best heel turn promo in YEARS.

- I really wish they’d f*cking push Rusev. Such a waste.

- The Bludgeon Brothers are coming. I don’t get why they couldn’t just call them Harper and Rowan. The giant hammers? Really weird overall. It sucks because Harper can absolutely contribute BIG TIME as a singles if they just repackaged him. I’m confused as to why they don’t.

- I am confused. Why did they have Dillinger lose the fall on Sunday in the three way? If it was to protect A.J. by having him lose the title without being pinned then why did they have him lose to Corbin clean on Smackdown?

- WWE is doing a WWE 365 documentary series on the Network which will cover a year in the life of a WWE Superstar. The first one is set to be released sometime in November with Kevin Owens as the star.

- Last weekend marked Kane’s 20th anniversary as a character in the WWE. WOW.

- Roman Reigns was on a conference call where the subject of The Young Bucks came up. Reigns in referencing them said: “WWE doesn’t need guys running around doing too sweets and acting like DX from 15 years ago. We need original characters and creating something new.” Matt Jackson of The Young Bucks replied via Twitter with the following: “You expect old-timers/shock jocks to bury you, but not current, young, top-guys that you respect. Disappointing. #usVSthem”

- Shayne Baszler is now training full time at the WWE Performance Center. Both Ronda Rousey and Jessamyn Duke are still training extensively with Brian Kendrick in Los Angeles and Marina Shafir has been training in Florida as well with her husband Roderick Strong. Not a bad bunch of trainers. It is fully believed that Ronda Rousey has signed a deal to perform for WWE however no timeline has been discussed as of yet. Wrestlemania is the obvious target date but one would think they would want her in a 1x1 match with someone, namely Charlotte or Stephanie McMahon. That means with the rest of the Four Horsewomen in training, we may get Rousey in a WWE ring before Mania. You would guess Survivor Series but I don’t think they’d be ready by then and you wouldn’t want to blow the aura of them looking like they know what they are doing before Rousey steps in the ring at Mania. So it would have to be carefully booked. But Survivor Series is right around the corner so they would need to get to the build up fairly soon. Time will tell.

- As far as management is concerned, it appears that Ricochet will be joining the promotion as soon as he is legally able to do so which would ne January 16th, 2018. His losing his match at the “King of Pro-Wrestling” show last weekend in Japan points to him being halfway out the door of New Japan.

- This CANNOT make WWE happy but 2K have reached out to the Young Bucks about them doing motion capture for next year’s WWE 2K video game. Reason being is that they are the most created wrestlers in “Create a Wrestler” mode so 2K wanted to get all of their moves motion captured to make it more accurate for next year’s version. LOL.

- Actor Bradley Cooper has been offered the starring role in “Pandemonium” which is about the life of Vince McMahon. Cooper has not accepted the role as of yet as he is awaiting an updated script to read. What is kind of a turn off for me is that WWE Films is now involved in the project as well meaning that while we will get a more honest telling of the story of Vince, it will be the WWE version of events rather than the book version. The original script however was complete and utter fiction.

- The Miz has been hired by MTV to be the host of “The Challenge: Champs vs. Stars” which will feature former WWE Diva Cameron a.k.a. Ariane Andrews.

- Legit just found out that actor Jon Bernthal a.k.a. Shane from the Walking Dead a.k.a. The Punisher is legitimately the nephew in law to WWE Star Kurt Angle as he is married to Angle’s niece. WOW.

WWE “TLC” PPV is on Sunday, October 22nd, 2017 from Minneapolis Minnesota and the line-up is as follows:

  • The Shield (Roman Reigns/Seth Rollins/Dean Ambrose) vs. The Bar (Shamus & Cesaro)/Braun Strowman/WWE Intercontinental Champion The Miz © with The Miztourage (Curtis Axel & Bo Dallas) in a TLC MATCH
  • WWE RAW WOMEN’S TITLE: Alexa Bliss © vs. Mickie James
  • Asuka vs. Emma
  • WWE CRUISERWEIGHT TITLE: Kalisto © vs. Enzo Amore

    - Apparently my column last week was the fire needed to be lit underneath them as Anthem Sports announced the debut of the “GLOBAL WRESTLING NETWORK” on Tuesday with over 1,000 hours of streaming content readily available. There is a 30 day free trial off the bat and then it will be $7.99 per month following. It is readily available on the iOs and Android platforms with Roku, Apple TV, XBOX and Amazon Firestick compatibility coming soon. In addition to the TNA/Impact/GFW/Impact libraries, they will also feature footage from Scott D’Amore’s “Border City Wrestling” as well as St. Louis’ Territory “Wrestling at the Chase” and some other independent promotions from Canada.

    - And by Tuesday night, the site was not allowing members to log in nor allowing new members to sign up. Sigh. THIS. F*CKING. COMPANY.

    - Credit where it is due as usual. I do like the fact that Impact airs matches from members of their roster in other promotions. It was a breath of fresh air showing Eddie Edwards defend his Noah title in Noah. Same with the AAA matches or other promotion matches that take place on Impact.

    - So to be clear, Moose and Stephan Bonner went into a gym illegally, smashed up a bunch of stuff and stole property but American Top Team isn’t going to press criminal charges against them for vandalism and theft? Just saying.

Ring of Honor / Lucha Underground / Independent / International News and Notes:

    - The entire floor level of the Tokyo Dome has SOLD OUT for the New Japan “Wrestle Kingdom” show on January 4th. Tickets were only available to New Japan Club members with the general public tickets not going on sale until October 25th.

    - Hiroshi Tanahashi will be wrestling at “Supercard of Honor” over Wrestlemania weekend in New Orleans.

    - Kazuchika Okada defending the I.W.G.P. title against Tetsuya Naito is set for the main event of Wrestle Kingdom at the Tokyo Dome in January. Next weekend, Okada will break the longest title reign record of 489 days surpassing Shinya Hashimoto in 1996/1997 and the day of the Tokyo Dome show on January 4th, he will break the “total days” record as champion of 1, 358 held by Hiroshi Tanahashi.

    - It appears that Ricochet will be joining the WWE/NXT as soon as he is legally able to do so which would ne January 16th, 2018. His losing his match at the “King of Pro-Wrestling” show last weekend in Japan points to him being halfway out the door of New Japan.

    - For those wondering, WWE did in fact notify Cody Rhodes BEFORE they made the announcement about using the War Games concept for NXT. They obviously did not need his permission for it but it was as a courtesy since his father, WWE Hall of Famer, Dusty Rhodes created the gimmick.

LOL.

    - The Young Bucks have also come to an agreement with Funko to have their own Funko Pops sold at Hot Topic beginning in 2018.

    - Santino Marella and Jim Cornette were involved in a verbal altercation over the weekend in Michigan. By all accounts, Santino was the instigator in the situation and was trying to get Jim Cornette to slap him again as he did all those years ago in Ohio Valley Wrestling. Cornette left the event over this situation and apologized to the fans that came to meet him that he did not get a chance to see. Organizers of the event escorted Santino out due to his involvement in the situation. Santino claims the events did not go down as reported and released his one and only statement on the situation AS FOLLOWS. Cornette however was not to be outdone and RELEASED HIS OWN STATEMENT.

    - Best of luck to Konnan who is going to undergo another hip replacement surgery sometime over the next few months with the goal of being able to recover enough to do a “retirement” tour in 2018 for the Crash promotion. The point of him returning to the ring will be to garner interest in The Crash but at age 53 with two hip replacements and a kidney transplant without having wrestled in over a decade, I cannot imagine this being an easy task or good for him health wise.

    - Congrats to Tommy Dreamer as he has signed an agreement with Twitch to live stream House of Hardcore shows on the app as they happen as well as a weekly TV series for the promotion. The first show that airs on the service will be the November 18th show from Philadelphia.

    - Despite having a backer willing to support the promotion financially (albeit at a significant discount than what they make now), Lucha Underground is currently looking for alternative television away from the El Rey Network. Apparently the lower financial deal is not something they are interested in and are hoping that another network will sign them and finance the show.

    MMA News and Notes:

    - Just to be clear, while I do see it happening someday, as of right now there have been NO TALKS between UFC and WWE regarding Conor McGregor working for them at Wrestlemania. Financially it makes no sense for it to happen right now with WWE having Ronda Rousey on board. McGregor’s asking price combined with whatever they are going to pay Rousey would put WWE financially in a huge hole for Mania which is their best weekend of the year. Next year? Maybe. 2018? No.

    - Demetrious Johnson is awesome. For those who missed it, Johnson successfully defended his UFC Flyweight Championship last weekend against Ray Borg and in the process broke the UFC record for consecutive title defenses held by Anderson Silva. In the process of doing it however he submitted Borg with one of the most fantastic arm bars EVER in MMA history. Here is the BREAKDOWN of the set up.

    - Johnson has held the flyweight title since the division’s inception by winning the title in the finals of the tournament on September 22nd, 2012.

    - Tough break for Heavyweight Derrick Lewis as he was forced to withdraw from his fight against Fabricio Werdum due to a back injury. He withdrew from the fight about 4 hours before showtime as he has some bulging discs that forced him to not be able to even get out of bed.

    - Props to UFC president Dana White as he comped about 150 people who were affected by the Las Vegas Shooting tragedy. He left tickets for first responders, victims who survived and families of victims, etc.

    - I am completely at a loss as to why Kevin Lee was medically cleared to participate in his fight with Tony Ferguson on Saturday while having an untreated staph infection. I don’t understand how he was cleared. You can die from an untreated staph infection and if was VISIBLE as in Joe Rogan called it out the minute he saw it.

    - Dana White did confirm that we will get Tony Ferguson vs. Conor McGregor next to unify the Lightweight title. White said by year end but I highly doubt McGregor wants to fight in 2017 so I would assume early next year.

    - White also revealed that he is working on a Cris “Cyborg” Justino vs. Holly Holm fight for the UFC Women’s Featherweight Title.

    - Carlos Condit is back. He has been out of action since August 2016. He will be returning to the December 30th PPV show against Neil Magny.

    - Mark Hunt was scheduled to headline an UFC Fight Night from Sydney Australia on November 19th. However, following comments in an interview where Hunt discussed his recent medical problems which included him noting that he will probably end his life in competition. He also noted that he stutters and slurs his words and his memory is shot with him sometimes not remembering what he did the day before. UFC, due to those specific comments, pulled him from his main event and decided it would be best if he underwent a whole plethora of tests. He has been replaced by Fabricio Werdum. Suffice to say, this did NOT go well with Hunt who is claiming he was pulled due to his lawsuit against UFC and that this is revenge. He also noted that his comments were taken out of context.

    - UFC’s official statement on Mark Hunt: “The health-related statements made by Hunt in the article were the first time UFC was made aware of these claims. Athlete’s health and safety is of the utmost importance to the organization and it would never knowingly schedule an athlete complaining of health issues before a fight. The organization will require that Hunt undergo further testing and evaluations prior to competing.”

    - With Hunt being 43 years old and having had WARS in the octagon, it is entirely possible that he fought his last fight with the promotion. Since Hunt went public with his medical claims, should UFC continue to use him and he is severely injured, UFC would be held liable in court and could be successfully sued for millions. So UFC would be smart to no longer book him.

    - UFC has ended their long-term partnership with Bud Light. Modelo Especial will be the new official beer of UFC beginning in 2018.

    - Regarding the return of Anthony “Rumble” Johnson at heavyweight, Johnson took himself out of the drug testing pool when he retired meaning he will need to un-retire and then supply 6 months of clean drug tests before he is able to fight. So he will not be able to fight until next summer at the earliest. That will be a significant layoff for someone of his age.

    - Robbie Lawler vs. Rafael dos Anjos has been signed as the main event for the next UFC on Fox show on December 16th from Winnipeg.

    - How in the world was THIS ALLOWED is beyond my knowledge. Mind blowing stupidity on all levels by all involved.

UFC 217 is on Saturday, November 4th, 2017 from New York, New York and the line-up is as follows:

  • UFC MIDDLEWEIGHT TITLE: Michael Bisping © vs. George St. Pierre
  • UFC BANTAMWEIGHT TITLE: Cody Garbrandt © vs. T.J. Dillashaw
  • UFC WOMEN’S STRAWWEIGHT TITLE: Joanna Jerdzejczyk © vs. Rose Namajunas
  • Johnny Hendricks vs. Paulo Borrachinha
  • Mickey Gall vs. Randy Brown
  • UFC 218 is on Saturday, December 2nd, 2017 from Detroit Michigan and the line-up is as follows:

  • UFC FEATHERWEIGH TITLE: Max Holloway © vs. Frankie Edgar
  • Henry Cejudo vs. Sergio Pettis
  • Alistair Overeem vs. Francis Ngannou
  • UFC ON FOX is on Saturday, December 16th, 2017 from Winnipeg Canada and the line-up is as follows:

  • Robbie Lawler vs. Rafael dos Anjos
  • Glover Teixeira vs. Misha Cirkunov
  • Antonio Rogerio Nogueira vs. Jared Cannnonier
  • Tim Elliott vs. Justin Scoggins
  • Chad Laprise vs. Galore Bofando
  • John Makdessi vs. Abel Trujillo
  • UFC 219 is on Saturday, December 30th, 2017 from Las Vegas Nevada and the line-up is as follows:

  • Dominick Cruz vs. Jimmie Rivera
  • Cynthia Cavillo vs. Carla Esparza
  • Carlos Condit vs. Neil Magny

    - BONUS Random VIDEO of the week Part 10: Official Trailer for “The New Mutants”. So this is a horror movie? WTF? I am confused.

    - THIS LINK is for LIFE. Thank you soldiers. WELCOME HOME BLOG

    - BONUS Random ARTICLE of the week: There were literally like 10 different links to this story with different comments from actors in Hollywood. This is the first one I chose but in all honesty, they are all just as terrifying. While it probably has always been expected that there has been some sort of sexual misconduct in Hollywood with “casting couches” being a real thing but this Harvey Weinstein story is insanity. Wow.

    - BONUS Random ARTICLE of the week PART 1: Dude, always be aware of your surroundings, high or not. How he got caught out there on camera is mind blowing, no pun intended.

    - BONUS Random ARTICLE of the week PART 2: The latest from Vegas.

    - BONUS Random ARTICLE of the week PART 3: I never watched the show but always wondered why he wasn’t a bigger star in Hollywood since I remember him being the talk of the town back then. Now I know why. Sad story to hear.

    - BONUS Random ARTICLE of the week PART 4: So he thought he killed her and burned her alive. Super assh*le move. But he says he didn’t do it. Zero percent chance that happened.

    - BONUS Random ARTICLE of the week PART 5: Always easier to take the easy way out than to live with the pain and struggle. I detest the easy way out. There are people who have it a lot worse than this guy and manage to keep it together. Coward.

    - BONUS Random ARTICLE of the week PART 6: Honestly, this f*cking guy. UGH.

    - BONUS Random ARTICLE of the week PART 7: Admittedly got choked up reading this. So terrible for this family. Brutal.

    - I lead the Random Article section with the main Harvey Weinstein story. I could have probably linked 10 separate articles on it had I wanted to. I didn’t. Just google. This story is going to tear down Hollywood because a ton of women are going to come out and start tossing accusations both real and fraudulent on Hollywood big wigs now. Sh*t is really going to hit the fan over this scandal.

    - Comic Con this past weekend in New York was awesome as usual. I ended up seeing the “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” panel and they aired the first 20 minutes of the premiere which is set to return on Friday, December 1st. Looks great, cannot wait.

    - Also at comic con, Robert Kirkman revealed that at some point we will have a “The Walking Dead” and a “Fear the Walking Dead” crossover. Not a full-fledged event due to the timeline but at some point a character will either join TWD from Fear meaning they survive on one show and in the future makes it to TWD or someone currently on TWD will have a backstory that started on Fear.

    - And in an AMAZING situation at Comic Con, actor Mark Hamill was walking the main floor where all the visitors were randomly asking people if they were interested in taking a photo with him. After a crowd formed around him, he ducked into a small room and asked that everyone form a straight line and he would take pictures with as many people as he possibly could. Amazing how one of the most recognizable actors in the “comic” universe due to his roles as both Luke Skywalker and arguably the most famous “Joker” in the Batman universe and he is just walking around meeting fans and taking pictures.

    - I refuse to buy my tickets now so apparently I may not be seeing Star Wars: The Last Jedi on opening weekend as many shows are already SOLD OUT. Yes, two months in advance and a ton of showings have pre-sold out. Craziness.

    - As of this writing, “Thor: Ragnarok” is tracking to surpassing a $100 million U.S. opening weekend. WOW.

    - Marvel Studios head honcho Kevin Feige revealed that Marvel is releasing an official timeline of events for their cinematic universe. That means they will tell you what year Iron Man was held in all the way up to the end of Phase 3 which ends with Avengers 4. Bear in mind that Captain Marvel is set to take place BEFORE Iron Man in the 1990’s even though the movie is coming out next year. Also, Captain America: The First Avenger will be the official beginning of the timeline.

    - Matt Ryan will be bringing his famous John Constantine character this season to “Legends of Tomorrow” on the CW. Ryan played the role of Constantine in the NBC show before it was cancelled but reprised the role for CW’s “Arrow” two seasons ago. It will however not be a “one-off” and instead be a multiple episode appearance.

    - Also very interested to see how this will affect the show moving forward but apparently Victor Garber (Dr. Martin Stein) is set to depart the “Legends of Tomorrow” cast before the season is over. No, not like Rip last season who was gone for half the season and then returned, Dr. Stein will be leaving the show for good. Being that he is one-half of Firestorm, how will this work?

    - Warner Brothers have officially hired a writer to pen the script to “Beetlejuice 2” which is set to star Michael Keaton reprising his famous role. The hope is to hire director Tim Burton to return to direct the sequel and it is a strong possibility as he is currently working with Keaton on Disney’s live action adaptation of “Dumbo”.

    - Shocked to see that Fox’s “New Mutants” is a horror film. Like, WTF? Did NOT see that coming. Weird.

    - Fox has also set a release date of February 14th, 2019 for “Gambit”
