By Matt Dawgs Dec 1, 2017 - 3:16 PM print

T.G.I.F. with Matt Dawgs: #422

Good day to you all and welcome to We Want Insanity. I am your host for today, Matt Dawgs and this is my column. Today is the end of the work week and the time to look back at all the goings-on over the past seven days as I wrap it up with a bow and spout it out bit by bit. Buckle up. Enjoy the ride.

IMPORTANT MATT NOTE:: I am hoping that you readers have taken the time to lend a hand and donated to the JAIDAN STRONG cause for me. I’d really appreciate it if you did; as little as $5 can go a long way. If not, it isn’t a big deal but please at least SHARE THE LINK. I get that finances can be tough for some but taking the time to share a link via your social media doesn’t cost a dime. I’d appreciate it greatly as one of your friends or family members may be able to help out. Thanks.

BONUS MATT NOTE: Shout out to Mr. Bullock for the pinch hit last week as usual. He always does a great job at filling in. So kudos to him for being able to change his format because I know I couldn’t do the ROHbot report if he asked me to.

WWE NEWS AND NOTES:

- Raw was SUPER uneventful this week with the only highlights being that Samoa Joe will be the next challenger for Roman Reigns, the fact that they acknowledged Dean Ambrose is married to Renee Young, Matt Hardy is FINALLY “Broken/Awoken” and Paige’s group is called Absolution. In all honesty, none of the above was earth shattering or memorable.

- I do like Sonya Deville but the MMA female role should 100% be Shayna Baszler. Not sure why they are pushing Sonya when they have Baszler.

- Braun Strowman is miraculously healed from his crushed larynx from last week as he returned and crushed the larynx of Kane as a receipt. I don’t see where they are going with this feud other than they have to get there fast because Kane is going to have to leave soon to fully engulf himself in his mayoral campaign. By the angle they did on RAW, it felt like a blowoff to the feud with Strowman “injuring” him but I cannot imagine that being it as they never really had their match.

- Before Kane got laid out though he destroyed Finn Balor again. That was likely because - despite Vince McMahon apparently giving up on Balor, WWE.com put up a poll on who should be Brock Lesnar’s next title defense and Balor won the poll. LOL. So that was Vince’s way of showing us that Balor isn’t over.

- Matt Hardy is going to be using the “Woken” character starting soon in WWE. Impact has granted him the rights to all of the images, likenesses and intellectual properties of the character for use as well as anyone else who works for them meaning that if Abyss were to come to WWE, he can come as Abyss and/or Joe Park Esq. WWE plans on using the “Woken” name as opposed to “Broken” since WWE wants/needs to own all of their characters. The good thing for Matt however is that if he ever decides to leave WWE again, he can go back to being “Broken” on the indies. Matt can also introduce anything of that character that WWE is interested in using meaning that Brother Nero, King Maxel, Queen Reby, Vanguard 1, Senor Benjamin, etc.

- The decision by Impact was likely made in part to Hardy providing the courts with a ton of financial information and breaches in his contract on Impact’s part which would have cost them in the long run had they went to trial. In essence, Impact would have lost and would have had to pay the Hardy’s a substantial amount in addition to allowing them to have the characters.

- To show you how far engulfed Matt is into this gimmick, he has opened a Vanguard 1 Twitter account.

- IT HAS BEGUN.

- The Asuka booking has been fantastic ever since the debacle of her debut and the Raw following. Not to blame Emma but in hindsight, how stupid was that booking? WWE booking 50/50 matches with Emma on consecutive nights only to release Emma and have Asuka run through everyone since. Mind blowing.

- Jason Jordan is quietly playing subtle heel and it is going to be fantastic if booked correctly.

- Smackdown wasn’t much better than RAW with the noteworthy news items being that Ruby Riot’s group is named “The Riott Squad”. Get it? Sigh. It also has 2 T’s as WWE has changed the spelling of the name.

- The Singh brothers are no longer going to be associated with Jinder Mahal moving forward. Smackdown’s angle with Mahal destroying them was their swan song. Honestly, unless they move them back to NXT immediately so they can develop, I cannot seem them lasting long. There really isn’t any place for them on the main roster except as Mahal’s lackeys. They still need to learn to work better as performers and that isn’t going to happen with them being squashed in tag matches on the main roster.

- Kevin Owens pinned Randy Orton due to interference from Sami Zayn. We all know what that means right? That means that Orton will pin Owens cleanly next week.

- The Hype Bros are no more. Mojo Rawley turned on Zack Ryder. So he is a heel. I do not care about this.

- The Fashion Files is NEVER going to end. Ugh.

- So is Gable and Benjamin’s push over? They lost CLEAN to the New Day. So random. I feel so bad for Gable because he is way more talented than Jason Jordan and he is getting the short end of the stick.

- The Marine 6 has begun filming in London this week which is the reason Miz lost the I.C. title to Roman Reigns and was not at RAW this week. Becky Lynch is expected to miss a few weeks as well for the Smackdown brand.

- Without naming names, Nia Jax made news this week by sending out the following tweet: “I am subjected to body shaming & it’s something I have accepted. It sucks when you get it in your own backyard around people you’re changing in front of and trust with your body.” In 2017 this happening in WWE is ridiculous. 80’s and 90’s? Sure. But 2017 with the P*ssification of America as we know it and the way that everything is criticized everywhere; I am shocked that this is going on. WWE has to be image conscious now more than ever so if this gets out, they will get slammed hard by the media.

- WWE Hall of Famer Kurt Angle revealed that he went into Survivor Series with an injured quadriceps muscle hence why it was taped up. He noted he tore the muscle doing wind sprints two days before the PPV in preparation for the match. It wasn’t a severe year and should heal itself in another week or so.

- Arn Anderson was a special guest enforcer for the Bobby Roode vs. Dolph Ziggler match at the “Starrcade” live event in North Carolina last weekend. He ended up psychically getting involved and nailed Ziggler with his patented spine buster.

- Luke Harper and Erick Rowan no longer have first names.

- Drew McIntrye had successful surgery on his torn biceps and is targeting Wrestlemania for his return to action.

- NXT held a few tapings this week at Full Sail University leading to 2018 and then in January will tape their next set of tapings at the old WCW Center Stage set in Atlanta. While I am not going to spoil results for those of you who watch weekly, there was a title change of some sort on the show. You know what I also enjoy? Despite the fact that some people are protected due to the angles they are involved in, there isn’t 50/50 booking like on Raw and Smackdown. A major star on NXT lost to another major star CLEANLY in the middle of the ring after taking his finisher. That almost NEVER happens in WWE except for Brock Lesnar and if it does, the loser gets his win back on the following Raw or Smackdown. Here in NXT, that loser will NOT be getting a win back anytime soon. Amazing how that works and amazing how the people in NXT are much bigger stars there than they are when they are called up to the main roster. Funny how booking wins and losses to mean something makes a difference.

- All NXT shows from inception to this week’s television show have been uploaded to the WWE Network.

- WWE announced their PPV schedule for 2018 and it was revealed that the “Money in the Bank” PPV will be joining the “Big 4” as a dual brand PPV. No word on whether this means both brand will have a MITB match next year or if the main event MITB match will feature wrestlers from both brands and the winner gets the briefcase for their specific brand. Either way, the show will take place on June 17th from Chicago Illinois. WWE also confirmed that they are back to 14 PPV’s next year down from 2017’s 16 PPV events.

- Vince McMahon announced earlier this week that WWE Studios is going to venture into both television and digital programming. Yes, this means scripted dramas and comedies for network/cable television.

- John Cena is being sued by Ford Motor Company as he was allowed to purchase a limited edition Ford GT that runs for $500,000 so long as he didn’t sell it for 2 years. Ford is upset that Cena sold it for a significant price and made a huge profit off of it thus breaking their agreement. Cena allegedly sold it to pay some bills. Now I am all for Cena making a profit on a car that he likely drove once or twice. My question is, and this isn’t a good thing, is how does he need that money for bills? It looks like he has not been spending his money wisely because there should be no reason why he owes $500,000 or more in bills and doesn’t have that money to spare.

- Dave Batista has been in quiet talks directly with Vince McMahon about a return to the ring. No word on whether he is looking for a one-shot or a short term deal but talks are ongoing. He wants to build to a retirement match.

- Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson posted to his Instagram that he finally completed his new Brahma Bull tattoo after over 30 hours of work.

- Happy 68th birthday to WWE Hall of Famer Jerry “The King” Lawler.

- WWE has come to terms on the release of Jim Johnson. If you do now know who he is then you aren’t a true wrestling fan.

- I am also hearing rumblings that Lio Rush has been wished well on his future endeavors. That sucks if true.

- Congrats and best wishes to David Otunga as he and his soon to be ex fiancé Jennifer Hudson have reached a temporary custody agreement in which Otunga will have majority custody of his son David Jr. for the immediate future until a permanent agreement is reached. This is in part due to Hudson having to be in the U.K. for their version of “The Voice” in which she is a judge. Hudson also confirmed that Otunga has been the primary care giver for the child since birth and has dropped her order of protection prohibiting Otunga from contact with David Jr. or Hudson herself. Otunga however will NOT be moving back into the family home and will have to find a new residence in Chicago of his own for him and his son.

GLOBAL FORCE IMPACT WRESTLING NEWS and NOTES:

- Impact extended a HUGE olive branch in order to paint themselves as babyfaces to the wrestling world. Ed Nordholm, president of Impact revealed that they have implemented a new policy where their roster can keep whatever gimmicks, names, etc. that they have developed while working for TNA/Global Force Wrestling/Impact once they leave the promotion. That is HUGE. As witnessed on WWE’s Monday Night Raw, Matt Hardy is going to be transitioning into his “Broken” character and anyone else who leaves, such as Ethan Carter III whose contract is up soon can go to WWE with that name and gimmick. Same goes for Abyss and anyone else.

- Impact’s next set of television tapings are scheduled for January 10th through 15th in Orlando Florida meaning that they haven’t fully converted to the idea of taping in Canada moving forward. They will likely move back to Canada for the March tapings as it is significantly cheaper to tape shows there for Sinclair.

- Both Bobby Lashley and EC III become free agents in early 2018. Due to the recent budget cuts, I can see Impact NOT extending offers to them. While Lashley likely isn’t going to return to WWE, I could see them interested in a one off with him vs. Lesnar in 2018. As for Carter, he is young and was in WWE’s developmental system years ago and has improved vastly since leaving. He could be a player for WWE if booked properly. He has a great look and is a very good promo.

- Current Impact Knockouts Champion Laurel Van Ness (Zack Ryder’s girlfriend Chelsea Green) has requested her release from Impact and will likely be given it. It is simply amazing because apparently she requested her release BEFORE the latest set of tapings and not only did they not oblige, they GAVE HER THE TITLE AFTER SHE REQUESTED IT!!!! So as champion, she still wants to be released. This f*cking company.

- Remember earlier this year when Alberto El Patron opened a restaurant in San Antonio just about the time he was “stabbed” by a “mystery assailant”? Well said restaurant is out of business.

- Props for Impact for thinking out of the box as they are taping matches at Scott D’Amore’s “Border City Wrestling” on December 3rd as well as on December 9th for Pat Buck’s “Wrestle Pro” show in Rahway NJ. A smart way to save on costs is to tape matches on independent shows around the world. They have taped matches in Japan, Canada and Mexico.

- I get that you own the footage and it is yours to use but why air a Samoa Joe vs. Kurt Angle match from 2006 in its entirety on Impact? All that showcases is that these guys, who are great, were once part of the roster and can now be seen on WWE Raw each week. SMH.

Ring of Honor / Lucha Underground / Independent / International News and Notes:

- Major congrats to the Young Bucks as they surpassed “Rick and Morty” to become the hottest selling shirt in Hot Topic stores across the country.

- Speaking of the Bucks, they and Cody Rhodes are currently in negotiations to run a show in 2018 titles “All In” where the goal is to sell out a 10,000 seat venue. Currently they are in talks with venues in Chicago, Ontario California, San Francisco and London. This is all stemming from a tweet earlier this year where Dave Meltzer said that Ring of Honor wouldn’t be able to sell out a 10,000 arena to which Cody replied that he would take that bet. The idea is that the Bucks and Cody will 100% finance the event themselves and they are hoping that ROH will help promote the show with them without having to bear any financial responsibility for it. ROH of course would also need to provide permission for them to wrestle on the show since they have exclusive rights on their U.S. bookings. While I absolutely appreciate the effort and drive of the Bucks and Cody, this isn’t the best idea for them to flip the bill on an event this size. There are a few exceptions of non-WWE events gaining an audience of 10,000 people. Maybe if they wait until Daniel Bryan becomes a free agent in September 2018 and can main event with Bryan vs. Kenny Omega or Kazuchika Okada but other than that, I cannot think of anything that may come close to that. And honestly, no way does New Japan let Okada vs. Bryan happen anywhere than New Japan.

- As an FYI…Cody does want to draw 10,000 legit on their own merits. He noted that he doesn’t plan on piggybacking off of Wrestlemania weekend and wants to do this show independent of that since Mania is the draw and he wants the show to sell out not because of thousands of fans being in town for something bigger.

- Rhodes did note that he believes him defending the ROH Title against Daniel Bryan would draw 10,000 people. As I noted above, if it is Bryan’s first match back and it is a stacked show, it may do so regardless of who Bryan is against. Bryan vs. Omega is absolutely the bigger draw though.

- To show you the difficulty in getting 10,000 paid in the United States is, according to Dave Meltzer, the last U.S. NON-WWE show to draw 10,000 paid was WCW Spring Stampede 1999 which drew 20,516 or which 13,789 was paid and the rest was papered. No easy feat, especially in 2018.

- Cody will be defending the ROH Title on a Revolution Pro show on December 8th against Jay Lethal. One would assume that should Lethal win, he will go onto defend the title at “Final Battle” against Dalton Castle.

- Tickets for Wrestle Kingdom are selling at the fastest pace in 20 years and it may become the first sell out of the Tokyo Dome for New Japan in that time frame. Last year at this time, the Wrestle Kingdom show has 12,000 tickets sold to date. This year that number is 22,000. So they are WAY ahead of last year’s pace and while it may not sell out, they are going to have a legit 36,000 people there which would be the largest crowd at the Tokyo Dome for New Japan since 1988 when they headlined with Riki Choshu vs. Antonio Inoki in Inoki’s “retirement” match.

- Angelico announced that he is no longer a part of Triple A in Mexico and will be leaving Mexico altogether as of January 1st.

- Rey Mysterio will be the featured face of the new Arolucha promotion run by Aroluxe and promoted by Konnan. He will team with Pentagon (using that name instead of Penta OM which is interesting because AAA and Lucha Underground own that name and thus cannot be pleased that he is using it) in the main event for the first tapings scheduled for December 10th in Nashville against Rush and Johnny Mundo (Morrison).

- It is believed that Aroluxe is also talking to Vince Russo about coming in to assist with creative alongside Konnan. Think about that for a second. In 2017, a promotion is interested in using Vince Russo as part of their creative team. Wow.

- Lucha Underground announced this week that they are willing to release ANY talent who is under contract and no longer wants to work there so long as if they are a champion, they come to the first tapings to drop their titles or if they are involved in a major storyline at the conclusion of the last season, to come back and conclude said storyline. Once they fulfill those obligations, they will be released and free and clear to go anywhere they want with no restrictions.

- The female formerly known as Emma and now wrestling under her real name of Tenille Dashwood has booked several independent dates starting in February with her first show being for Pat Buck’s “Wrestle Pro” where she will be taking on Angelina Love on February 2nd in Rahway New Jersey.

- Flo Slam, the streaming service many thought would change the face of independent wrestling officially shut down this week. They are no more. They opened their site less than one year ago.

- Jim Cornette announced at WrestleCade last Saturday that he was officially retired from managing following that event. He noted that he’d still do conventions and autograph shows in addition to his podcast but No more managing gigs. He hasn’t managed full time in years but perdiocally would manage on independent shows due to no longer being able to take bumps at his age and being unable to be the performer he’d like to be.

- Carlos Colon’s WWC in Puerto Rico has still not run a show since the Hurricane hit Puerto Rico in September. It is still a bad scene over there as some of my family is still without power 3 months later and only 50% of the island has electricity.

ROH “FINAL BATTLE” PPV is on Saturday, December 15th, 2017 from New York City and the line-up is as follows:

  • IWGP JUNIOR TAG TEAM TITLES: Roppongi 3K (Sho & Yoh) © vs. The Young Bucks (Matt & Nick Jackson)
  • MMA News and Notes:

    - Michael Bisping showed the world why it is never a good idea to take a fight on 3 weeks’ notice as he was knocked unconscious last weekend in China by Kelvin Gastelum. It marked the first time in his career that he has suffered consecutive losses. Bisping noted following the fight that it is still his goal to fight one more time in March in London and then retire at that show.

    - With the win, Gastelum feels he should get a title shot at interim middleweight champion Robert Whitaker with the winner facing George St. Pierre to unify the titles.

    - In some potentially frightening news, Conor McGregor was involved in a skirmish in an Ireland pub last weekend and he physically assaulted someone. As it turns out, the man he assaulted was “connected” to a member of the Kinalhan Cartel in Ireland. No police report was filed for obvious reasons but the rumor circulating around is that Conor was offered to make a payoff of $900,000 for “protection” meaning no repercussions would be taken against him for the incident. However if he doesn’t pay, all bets are off and according to reporters in Ireland, the Kinalhan do not care who Conor McGregor is and will do whatever it takes to exact revenge. This incident was NOT the first McGregor incident involving him and a fracas at Irish pubs. He has been getting in several skirmishes over the past few months.

    - Conor of course is being Conor and was in Ireland yesterday for a court appearance for speeding. Upon exiting the courthouse, he was asked by reporters about the threat to which he responded: “Come and get me.”

    - Despite putting little effort into promoting her fights, UFC Women’s Bantamweight Champion Amanda Nunes claims UFC has not promoted her as the star that she is. Unbelievable.

    - Jon Jones hearing in front of the California State Athletic Commission regarding his latest drug test failure has been postponed at Jones request and will now take place in February 2018.

    - Khabib Nurmagomedov is claiming that he accepted a fight against Tony Ferguson on the December 30th show however Ferguson turned it down.

    - Mark Hunt went to Vegas last week to further undergo testing by UFC doctors on his alleged brain injuries that caused UFC to remove him from the recent Australia card.

    - CM Punk will be at tomorrow’s UFC show in Detroit and it is expected that his next fight will be announced then.

    - Dana White noted earlier this week that Nate Diaz has been offered several different fight opportunities this year and he has turned down each and every one. He has NOT offered him Tyrone Woodley yet but doesn’t think he’d accept that either. The reason UFC keeps offering him fights is due to his contract. So long as he is offered fights and turns them down, the length of his contract freezes. But if they do not offer him fights every x-amount of time, then his contract begins clocking meaning he could become a free agent.

    - White also said that despite his actions at the Bellator show and any impending disciplinary action to be taken, he still isn’t sure Conor McGregor plans on fighting again.

    - White noted in his weekly scrum that he doesn’t think Ronda Rousey plans on ever fighting again and he honestly hopes she doesn’t. He knows she is really happy right now and has made more than enough money to never have to fight again. Despite that, he has spoken to Rousey and for whatever reason she refuses to “officially” retire and she is still a part of the USADA testing program.

    - Daniel Cormier vs. Volkhan Oezdemir is official for UFC 220 in January as the main event for the UFC Light Heavyweight Title.

    - Speaking of Light Heavyweight’s, the #2 contender to the title, Alexander Gustafson underwent shoulder surgery and will be out for a few months.

    - Cain Velasquez is likely getting the next Heavyweight title shot against Stipe Miocic.

    - MMA Star Ben Askren retired last week in relative obscurity. It is a shame for all of MMA that he never got to compete in UFC due to Dana White finding his fighting style “too boring” because he was undefeated and would have dominated most UFC competition based on his wrestling ability alone. Askren could have been the best Welterweight of all time but unfortunately it will never be known or confirmed because he never was able to test his abilities in UFC against the best of the best.

    - Askren did note that he would come out of retirement for a shot at Tyrone Woodley and the UFC Welterweight title or to fight George St. Pierre.

    - Bellator announced their brackets for their Heavyweight Grand Prix. The tournament kicks off on their January 20th show with Chael Sonnen vs. Quinton “Rampage” Jackson (and the show competes head to head with UFC 220). In February, we will get Roy Nelson vs. Matt Mitrione. April has Fedor Emelianenko vs. Frank Mir and in May we get Ryan Bader for Mohammed “King Mo” Lawal. The Sonnen/Jackson winner faces off with the Fedor/Mir winner and the Nelson/Mitrione winner faces off with the Bader/Lawal winners. Those winners will then meet in the finals in December and be crowned the new Bellator MMA Heavyweight Champion.

    - Rory MacDonald has asked Scott Coker to be an alternate in the Heavyweight Grand Prix. Yes 170 lbs. welterweight Rory MacDonald wants to fight in a tournament of 205 lbs. up to 265 lbs. SMH.

    - Despite having career ending back surgery, Shane Carwin had noted that he wanted to attempt to make a comeback to MMA. He was not offered any deals by either UFC or Bellator and has abandoned his comeback attempt. It is for the better as he had a pretty severe back injury and the several year layoff at his age was not ideal for the MMA world.

UFC 218 is TOMORORW NIGHT from Detroit Michigan and the line-up is as follows:

    - BONUS Random ARTICLE of the week PART 1: Definitely a name I did NOT see making the list and there is no chance in hell NBC fires him without having some sort of concrete proof. I would have thought a “suspension pending completion of an investigation”. So flat out firing him is HUGE.

    - That Avengers: Infinity War Trailer….EPIC.

    - Tonight, Marvel’s “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” returns. Yay!!!

    - Justice League….not horrible. It is worth seeing in theaters based solely on the action and special effects. With that being said, you can absolutely tell how Joss Whedon tried to make it a lighter film than BvS and Man of Steel and you can see based on the original trailers that there were on a different path with Snyder, not for the better by the way. Superman was absolutely the character he should have been since the beginning. Had Whedon been at the helm of this universe from day one of the entire DCU concept, we’d much different universe. I don’t want to really slam Zack Snyder because I don’t know him personally but he really took this universe off the rails from where it should have been. I will never understand why he went the route he did. Was he trying to make the universe the way Christopher Nolan was? Why it was so hard to go down the route that the comics do with their characters is beyond me. Superman didn’t need to be dark and brooding. He didn’t need to be a murderer. Batman didn’t need to hate Superman with no backstory other than “if there is a 1% chance he’s bad, we have to kill him.” Plus, Batman didn’t need to kill anyone. Mind blowing.

    - Crisis on Earth X, the 4 part CW crossover event was by far the best 4 hours of television that CW has ever done. It is amazing to me that the WB’s television superhero-verse could be so much better than the movie superhero-verse. The show felt like a special event as opposed to past crossovers where each individual episode felt like it was a regular episode of those shows only with “special guest appearances”. Crisis on Earth X was just one made for TV movie almost and felt like it was its own show rather than individual shows. The premise was great. The action was great. The acting was great. My only blemish for the show was some of the CGI but I will take that at face value since basically it is a TV series and I can imagine how much all of those effects costs. If it had a movie budget, it honestly would have been better than Justice League. That isn’t a joke either.

    - Oh, and the death in the show. Ugh. It was heartbreaking and unexpected. I knew he was leaving the show but I thought he’d leave with a happy ending and a door to come back down the road. While he still can, it would have to be a past version of him and thus alter time which the Legend’s won’t do.

    - “General, Would you care to step outside?” – If you did not get that reference from Crisis on Earth X then you are either a millennial thus too young to get it or you aren’t a hardcore fan of THE SUPERHERO GENRE.
