T.G.I.F. with Matt Dawgs: #186

Good day to you all and welcome to We Want Insanity. I am your host for today, Matt Dawgs and this is my column. Today is the end of the work week and the time to look back at all the goings-on over the past seven days as I wrap it up with a bow and spout it out bit by bit. Buckle up. Let's go...

CLUB WWI NEWS: GO LISTEN. CLUB WWI !!! DO IT!!!! DO IT NOW!!!!!

MATT NOTE: If you don’t follow me on Facebook, you missed the fact that my son got one of the GREATEST SURPRISES EVER thanks to my brother.

WWE NEWS AND NOTES:

- I know I might sound like a broken record, like I am beating a dead horse or whatever other clichés you can think of but seriously, 3 hours is WAY TOO LONG for Monday Night RAW. Literally 2 minutes into the very opening segment with Dolph Ziggler and I felt like the show was dragging. Sure, the longer matches are better for the product because you can actually see how talented a lot of workers really are but the pacing of show drags so slowly that a legit 6 minute match on RAW that would have been 2 minutes feels like 25. Everything they do feels like a marathon. This is made worse by the fact that when you repeat segments from week to week (Vince/Vickie) then it feels like time stands still. UGH.

- Best of luck to the writing/creative team. Next week they have to write a 3 hour PPV, a 3 hour RAW and a special LIVE Smackdown that will be COMMERCIAL FREE. So in essence they have to write 8 hours of television. I do not envy them right now.

- Glad to see CM Punk has moved on from Ryback and is now setting his sights on The Rock. Looking forward to January when “Dwayne” returns. Rock is booked for the first RAW of the New Year on January 7th.

- PS – I wonder who got yelled at for letting Punk appear on camera in a Gracie Jiu-Jitsu hoodie? I am sure Punk didn’t get disciplined but someone had to have for not catching it before he went to the ring.

- The Slammy Awards. GROAN.

- Antonio Cesaro is F*CKING AWESOME. Quickly becoming one of the best workers in the company and definitely unique with his wrestling style. That is all.

- So let me get this straight, RAW is 3 hours and is slow as molasses. Every match gets 5 – 10 minutes of time. Yet for some unknown f*cking reason, Wade Barrett, a guy who has a rocket strapped to his back, does a job for R-Truth in a minute and a half? Whose idea was that?

- Cody Rhodes is back. 3 weeks too early but back nonetheless. I am glad he is back though because his mustache is AMAZING. Well done Mr. Rhodes. Rhodes tweeted the following: "2 muscle tears, 1 blown AC joint...25 days later HEALED. Rather miraculous...just getting started. #RhodesToTheFuture"

- Side note: Cody Rhodes mustache now has a Twitter account. I am serious. It is GOLD.

- While on the subject of injuries, there is a panic in the WWE management ranks and John Cena is FAR from 100% healed from not only his elbow injury but other ailments as well. Management is concerned because Cena has been firing on all cylinders for several years without a break and it looks like it is finally catching up to him physically. WWE does not have a contingency plan in effect to make a new top star at Cena’s level right now so they are trying to figure out how to capitalize on Cena while they still can. It is being discussed to obviously have him lower his workload on both the in ring AND company appearance end. Too much on the body for him. He is breaking down quickly.

- Normally I watch RAW and forward through commercials. This week, I was very very close to fast forwarding through the Miz. Never have I ever hated a character in wrestling so much that I have been tempted to just completely skip their segment even if it meant something to the storylines of the show. If you had CM Punk, Paul Heyman, Brock Lesnar, Vince McMahon, The Rock and John Cena all on Miz TV together in the same segment, I may just skip that segment. That is telling you how much I hate the Miz as a babyface.

- How the f*ck did Miz get away with saying "The Pink and the Stink" on television in a PG era? How did he not get fined? How did no one make an issue about it?

- WELL DONE SHIELD PROMO .

- What happened to 3MB? Can’t have two 3-man groups on RAW at the same time? (PS – I don’t watch The Main Event or Saturday Morning Slam so if they are there, it is like they are no where.)

- In an interesting development, WWE.com posted an article that featured a copy of the Money in the Bank contract. The contract officially stated that the winner can cash it in on ANY TITLE. Interesting.

- Randy Orton suffered some sort of wrist injury at the Tribute to the Troops taping last weekend. He was written out of television on Smackdown tonight as he gets evaluated. No detail yet on the severity of the injury but it has to be significant if they are pulling him off of television with an injury angle and are claiming he has a concussion and separated shoulder due to the angle.

- Former TNA star and Iraqi War veteran Jesse Neal was in attendance at Tribute to the Troops as a guest of WWE. Not sure if WWE is interested in him wrestling for them but they did invite him.

- With Orton turning heel soon, there is now internal talk about turning Alberto Del Rio into a babyface. WWE is in sort of a panic mode with the lack of top Hispanic talents and think Del Rio can fit the role. Mysterio is injured and taking too much time off for their liking and Sin Cara, well that isn’t going to happen as they have lost all faith in him in becoming a main event level talent. Sadly, a babyface Del Rio will probably have to dump Ricardo Rodriquez.

- Things are leading to a face Sheamus vs. a heel Orton at Mania for the title. That is the tentative idea.

- Also, where is the follow up on Del Rio/Rosa Mendes?

- Paul Heyman will be wrestling his FIRST EVER match in Madison Square Garden in a few weeks as he is working a WWE Live Event on 12/28 vs. Ryback.

- It is said that WWE has decided against Randy Savage going into the WWE Hall of Fame this year. The hold up is Savage’s brother “Leaping” Lanny Poffo who is adamant that Savage only wanted to be inducted with his father and brother as a package similar to the Von Erichs. WWE’s argument is that Savage was such a bigger star than Angelo and Lanny Poffo and that their history was rarely acknowledged when Savage became a star so they wouldn’t qualify like the Von Erichs. Rather than debate the issue, Vince McMahon is said to have taken Savage out of the discussion. One name still being worked on is Bruno Sammartino. Triple H is said to be working very hard on convincing him to accept the invitation and Bruno is said to like HHH.

- Speaking of HHH, to show you how much control he has over the developmental system, his hired right hand man Canyon Ceman (the guy who basically runs developmental on behalf of HHH and relays all happens to HHH) has been with the company for 5 months now and has not met or spoken to Vince McMahon yet. To have an executive in the company so high on the totem pole who has not met the “boss” shows you that HHH is in complete control of the division. HHH has also put both Gerald Brisco and Jim Ross back in the developmental process and both have been on the road scouting new developmental talents. Brisco and Ross are credited with finding/creating several WWE stars including The Rock, HHH, Kurt Angle, Brock Lesnar, Shelton Benjamin, Batista, John Cena and others. While these are all certainly great steps in the right direction as far as it goes to developing talent, the problem is that none of the talent they find are going to be major players for WWE for a few years. Angle and Lesnar are the fastest rising WWE talents in the history of the developmental program with Angle being in developmental for 6 – 8 months and Lesnar for a year. Everyone else was a project before becoming major stars which make Angle and Lesnar exceptions to the rule.

- Last week WWE.com had a video up featuring Scotty Goldman’s greatest WWE hits. For those who do not know, Scotty Goldman so happens to be CM Punk’s best friend in real life, Colt Cabana. Backstage at RAW on Monday…. COLT CABANA . Now before everyone gets all internet geeky on me, Colt was in the NJ area for a PWS show on Saturday night. My assumption is that he knew RAW would be in NJ on Monday so just stuck around to hang with Punk and visit old friends. But…it could be more. We will see.

- WWE is now looking into bringing back a lot of former mid-card talent to the company in order to work television and live events developing the FCW guys in ring work. So far both Shelton Benjamin and MVP are in the running as being reached out to and both in the past have said that they are open to returning and haven’t burned any bridges since they did what they were told and never returned to TNA. It’s sad that they are confirmed as mid-card talents (especially MVP who can be a main event level talent) but I am sure they will be paid more in WWE than they make in ROH and Japan respectively. There is definitely an assortment of mid-card independent former WWE talent out there who can be an asset to the company including Carlito, Charlie Haas, Trevor Murdoch, John Morrison, Chris Masters, Eugene Dinsmore, Matt Hardy and more.

- As confirmed by Jim Ross, former WWE Star “Bad Ass” Billy Gunn has been hired by WWE as a trainer in NXT alongside Bill Demott, Ricky “The Dragon” Steamboat, Billy Kidman, Joey Mercury and Norman Smiley.

- WWE Diva/Announcer Lillian Garcia is back with the company after being out due to being hit by a car two months ago. She recently tweeted a PICTURE of herself from the hospital ont he day of the accident to her WWE return.

- There also have been serious internal talks within WWE on the Divas division and the possibility of abolishing it altogether and using Divas in other roles in the company. Possible scenarios have Divas “romantically” involved with Superstars, many becoming managers, hosts for other WWE programming on the eventual WWE Network, reality programs involving them and even dancer’s ala Nitro Girls. With the revolving door of females in the company lately, there seems to be a lost interest in using them full time as wrestlers; especially with the emergence of A.J. Lee and Vickie Guerrero in non-wrestling roles.

- In a tough break for A.J., due to the pictures (posted here last week) of John Cena and Nikki Bella being an item, WWE is now pushing to end the Cena/A.J. storyline in favor of making fans want to NOT see them together which is the opposite of the original angles intent.

- Ted DiBiase has been privately discussing leaving the company either at year end or early next year. I honestly do not blame him. What a complete waste of someone who has loads of talent. WWE really dropped the ball with him when he was in Legacy and was on the verge of becoming a huge babyface when they were going to turn him on Orton only to decide at the last minute to turn Orton and keep him and Rhodes as heels. HUGE MISTAKE. I wonder who he pissed off backstage to get so buried?

- The Superdome in New Orleans is the frontrunner for Wrestlemania XXX next year. It is sad to see tradition being broken with Mania not hitting New York for 10 year intervals. I still don’t get why they did 29 in New Jersey knowing Mania XXX could have been held here instead.

- A very touching STORY about the Rock that very few people know.

- Former WWE Star Sean “X-Pac” Waltman tweeted directly to the Prime Time Players (Darren Young & Titus O’Neil) the following: “I did an interview last night and was asked who the guys to keep an eye out for are. You were on the short list.” That is a big compliment from someone who knows talent. Good for the PTP.

- WHAT. THE. F*CK ?

- Friendly reminder to you music fans out there. WWE is producing the Rolling Stones PPV that is taking place tomorrow night. The PPV performances will also feature Bruce Springsteen, Lady Gaga and the Black Keys. Check your local cable provider for how to order.

- WWE recently noted that they have no plans on ever singing independent talent Scorpio Sky. Sky was most recently featured in the Daniel Bryan/Kane skits at the psychiatrists office however last week he made a homophobic slur on his twitter account. Someone forwarded that to WWE and they not only denounced the slur but noted that they have no plans on dealing with him again. For an independent wrestler, that absolutely sucks especially after he had some bookings with them in a fairly important role.

- GANGREL STYLE ?

- MARYSE !!!

- Episode 95 of " Z! True Long Island Story ".

- WWE FAN NATION .

WWE TLC PPV is on Sunday, December 16th from Brooklyn New York and the line-up is as follows:

  • The Shield (Dean Ambrose/Seth Rolins/Roman Reigns) vs. WWE TAG TEAM CHAMPIONS Team Hell No (Kane & Daniel Bryan) and Ryback in a TABLES, LADDERS & CHAIRS MATCH.
  • WORLD TITLE: The Big Show © vs. Sheamus in a CHAIRS MATCH.
  • MONEY IN THE BANK LADDER MATCH: John Cena vs. Dolph Ziggler
  • INTERCONTINENTAL TITLE: Kofi Kingston © vs. Wade Barrett
  • US TITLE: Antonio Cesaro © vs. R-Truth
  • #1 CONTENDERS: Rey Mysterio & Sin Cara vs. Rhodes Scholars (Cody Rhodes & Damien Sandow) in a TABLES MATCH.

IMPACT WRESTLING News and Notes

- Jeff Hardy will NOT be content until he is in a wheel chair at age 50. For those who did not see “Final Resolution” last Sunday, Hardy almost KILLED HIMSELF when he took one of the sickest bumps in wrestling history as he dove to the outside of the ring and landed BACK FIRST on the guardrail before falling over and landing on the concrete. Mind you, as I have made clear time and time again, if this was Wrestlemania in front of 70,000 people plus a few million on PPV, so be it. But it wasn’t. It was in front of 2,000 people and 8,000 more at home; the risk not worth the reward.

- Christopher Daniels defeated A.J. Styles in a match that was their “final bout”. There two will never wrestle against each other in TNA again in any fashion. It also continued the A.J. Styles “bad year” angle as he was beaten by Daniels hitting A.J. with his own finisher, the Styles Clash. I never understood how a losing streak gimmick is supposed to get someone over but here we are again with a wrestling company giving it a try. SMH.

- And A.J. BETTER NOT BE turning heel. He is better suited as a babyface.

- Kazarian and Chris Daniels coming out in Zubaz pants with Fanny Packs = MONEY.

- James Storm is working through an injury. Not sure what the injury is but he is not 100%. So why was he booked on the PPV at the last minute with no build up? Who knows?

- Has there ever been anyone in TNA who looks more disinter

- Kurt Angle has a torn groin…..again…..for what feels like the 20th time in his TNA career. Bet you he wrestles on it though.

- In a recent interview, Angle stated that the most underrated wrestlers he has ever wrestled. Angle claimed that it was Austin who carried him through their entire feud.

- Still with the whole “swerves for the sake of swerves”. Aces & Eights jump Kurt Angle and Wes Brisco and Garrett Bischoff defend him. Um…they are secretly part of Aces & Eights. So when the reveal comes, I hope they explain why they didn’t just join in. For that matter, why were they fighting with Aces & Eights to begin with? I always hate when someone is aligned and “fights” their friend just to turn on someone later. DUMB BOOKING.

- I am also extremely tired of this angle. They have killed what was an entertaining angle and buried it into the ground. I don’t think anyone is going to care about the reveal anymore.

- TNA Impact is going to be taped for the next few weeks. They are still going to stay LIVE for the immediate future. Dixie Carter just decided to tape the final few shows of 2012 in order to give the talent time off for the holidays rather than have them travel during Christmas and New Years weeks.

- The next LIVE Impact is on January 13th and will be built around the return of Sting who was last seen a few months back being KILLED by Aces & Eights.

- Gawker Media has filed a motion to dismiss Hulk Hogan’s lawsuit against them. My guess is, they will be successful.

Independent / International News and Notes:

- After the controversy surrounding Pro Wrestling NOAH in Japan from last week where it was announced that Kenta Kobashi was fired, Kobashi announced that he was not fired but was in fact retiring from professional wrestling. Kobashi, for those who have never seen him, do yourself a favor and look up his work as he was one of the best in ring workers of ALL TIME. That is a fact. Anyway, Kobashi noted that he was retiring due to all of the injuries and surgeries he has accumulated over his career and he was not being forced to retire by NOAH management. It was his decision and his alone. This was likely to save face for NOAH as there was significant backlash both internally from talent and externally from fans. The company would have been negatively affected by his firing and likely would have suffered almost to the point of having to fold.

- Jerry Lynn’s retirement match is scheduled for March 23rd in Minneapolis which is the anniversary of his first match in 1988.

- It is sink or swim weekend for ROH on Sunday as they present their annual Final Battle iPPV show and it is major because just this past Wednesday ROH announced that they have a new iPPV provider and are boasting that the show will have faster download times, better quality, etc. If this show has just one minor technical glitch at all and they will likely lose a large portion of their audience from it. FYI…the iPPV is at 2:00 pm ET start as to not compete locally with WWE’s TLC PPV in nearby Brooklyn NY.

- As of now, Sunday’s “Final Battle” is the only ROH show that El Generico is scheduled to appear on. So that should pretty much tell you the outcome of that match.

RING OF HONOR WRESTLING presents “Final Battle iPPV” THIS SUNDAY from New York City and the line-up is as follows:

  • ROH TITLE: Kevin Steen © vs. El Generico – LADDER WAR.
  • ROH TAG TEAM TITLES: Steve Corino & Jimmy Jacobs © vs. The Briscoes vs. Caprice Coleman & Cedric Alexander.
  • ROH TV CHAMP: Adam Cole © vs. Matt Hardy
  • The American Wolves (Davey Richards & Eddie Edwards) vs. Kyle O’Reilly & Bobby Fish
  • Roderick Strong vs. Michael Elgin.
  • Jay Lethal vs. Rhino.
  • Prince Nana vs. RD Evans.
  • Jerry Lynn (in his final ROH appearance) vs. Mike Bennett w/Maria Kanellis.
  • Wrestling’s Greatest Tag Team (Charlie Haas & Shelton Benjamin) vs. B.J. Whitmer & Rhett Titus

MMA News and Notes

- UFC returned to FOX last Saturday and delivered what was probably their best Fox show to date. Excellent fights all around as well as a definite “changing of the guard” in two divisions. First off, UFC Legend and future hall of famer B.J. Penn was completely destroyed by Rory MacDonald. MacDonald dominated him for 3 straight rounds and honestly made Penn look silly. Penn, if he decides to stay at Welterweight, should just retire. He cannot compete at such a high weight anymore vs. bigger and stronger fighters. If he plans on going for another fight, it has to be at Lightweight which is what he is better suited for. In one of the other main bouts, Mauricio “Shogun” Rua was defeated by Alexander Gustafson. Gustafson is going to be tough to beat in the Light Heavyweight division and seems to be on a collision course with Light Heavyweight Champion Jon “Bones” Jones. He is probably the only man who is going to be able to compete with Jones in the division since he is an inch taller than Jones (although Jones still has the bigger reach).

- The main event certainly delivered and cemented Benson Henderson on top of the pound for pound mythical MMA rankings as Henderson defeated number one contender Nate Diaz by unanimous decision as he systematically dismantled Nate from bell to bell. Nate was unable to do anything to Henderson who just had his way with him for 5 straight rounds including taking him down at will and neutralizing any boxing ability Diaz had.

- There was some controversy following the fight as Henderson apparently fought the entire fight with a toothpick in his mouth. He even admitted to it but later backtracked claiming he was only joking. However if you look closely at the fight footage, you can see it in his mouth during the fight and in between rounds. The Seattle Athletic Commission said they have no rules in place preventing it so he will go unpunished.

- MacDonald has challenged (and the fight accepted) Carlos Condit. Condit is the only loss on MacDonald’s record and he wants to avenge it. It is up to Dana White to confirm and get signed but it will likely happen.

- The proposed George St. Pierre vs. Nick Diaz fight is being planned for March 16th in Montreal. Diaz in GSP country? WOW.

- It is unlikely that Johnny Hendricks will be booked in a fight to take place before GSP/Diaz in the event that Diaz has a meltdown and the fight is forced to be cancelled, Hendricks will be called to take his place.

- In an interesting development, Matt Mitrione turned down independent VADA testing for his fight with Roy Nelson as Nelson had a sponsorship agreement that would have paid for the testing for both fighters. Why turn down free, stricter drug testing? Hmmmm. Interesting.

- Diego Sanchez is officially moving back to Lightweight.

- The injury pulling Forrest Griffin from the 12/29 show is a torn MCL and strained ACL. He will miss several months due to surgery and rehab.

- Anderson Silva’s management team said that with George St. Pierre choosing to fight Nick Diaz instead of Silva, Silva is now open to the option of defending his Middle Weight Title sooner rather than later vs. Michael Bisping if Bisping beats Vitor Belfort in January.

- Speaking of Silva, he was offered an 8 fight extension by UFC and he immediately TURNED IT DOWN because he is seeking a 10 FIGHT DEAL!! At age 37, 10 fights is a lot. While UFC did not finalize a 10 fight deal, they did buy Silva a $175,000 Bentley as a gift/signing bonus.

- UFC Women’s Champion RONDA ROUSEY was listed as number 43 on the “Askmen.com” most desirable women poll. Rousey was ranked ahead of Kim Kardashian who dropped form number 8 last year to number 98 overall. OUCH Kim K.

- While there is no shot at it ever happening considering she’d be stupid to do so, Gina Carano is said to be walking around at 135 lbs right now while filming her next movie in England. Carano vs. Rousey would do HUGE PPV numbers if it were ever booked. It is the lightest that Carano has walked around at in YEARS.

- NICK NEWELL is no joke.

- Spike TV and Bellator officially announced that Bellator will debut on Spike immediately following TNA Wrestling at 10:00 pm ET on Thursday, January 17th with Michael Chandler vs. Rick Hawn for the Lightweight Title and Pat Curran vs. Patricio Freire for the Flyweight Title.
