T.G.I.F. with Matt Dawgs: #425

Good day to you all and welcome to We Want Insanity. I am your host for today, Matt Dawgs and this is my column. Today is the end of the work week and the time to look back at all the goings-on over the past seven days as I wrap it up with a bow and spout it out bit by bit. Buckle up. Enjoy the ride.

IMPORTANT MATT NOTE:: I am hoping that you readers have taken the time to lend a hand and donated to the JAIDAN STRONG cause for me. I’d really appreciate it if you did; as little as $5 can go a long way. If not, it isn’t a big deal but please at least SHARE THE LINK. I get that finances can be tough for some but taking the time to share a link via your social media doesn’t cost a dime. I’d appreciate it greatly as one of your friends or family members may be able to help out. Thanks.

BONUS MATT NOTE: R.I.P. to former WWE/WCW Star and longtime friend of the site Tom Zenk as he passed away on December 9th while in hospice care. Zenk was an uber talented wrestler that sometimes didn’t get the opportunities that he should have. Later in his post wrestling career he was sometimes marred by not having a censor filter in his comments about wrestling and those who work in the business. Part of it was an act to stay relevant but other times he was legit saying what a lot in the business were thinking and couldn’t say. Zenk was 59 years old at his passing.

ROCK THE VOTE

WWE NEWS AND NOTES:

- “THIS IS THE UFL!!!!!!” Yes. The rumors are in fact true as it has been revealed that Vince McMahon back in September had filed trademarks for UFL and United Football League as well as the saying ”For the love of Football”. He is once again considering going back into the football business with NFL ratings hitting a deep dive due to the national anthem protests as well as the Donald Trump agenda pushing people away from the league. He sees it as a chance to capitalize on the sport. Rumors are rampant that he has financial backers in the idea and thus will not be losing a large percentage of his vast fortune like he did with the XFL but he is still going to have to contribute a sizable amount to it. WWE, while not officially commentating on McMahon specifically working on a football project, they did confirm that not too long ago Vince had launched “Alpha Entertainment” which is separate from WWE and will fund investment opportunities and entertainment properties which could include professional football. Just yesterday, VKM sold 4% of his stock to the tune of 100 million dollars. He also filed five XFL trademarks

- Big announcement on Raw on Monday as WWE confirmed that Brock Lesnar will defend the WWE title against Kane and Braun Strowman in a TRIPLE THREAT MATCH!!! HAHA.I’m just kidding. That was announced but it got over with the crowd like a fart in church. I am flabbergasted that WWE management thought that this match would be more over with fans than Brock vs. Finn Balor. LOLOLZ. Anyway, the major announcement was that for the first time ever, WWE will hold a Women’s Royal Rumble match. They did not give the exact number of women participating but it was noticeable that WWE Raw Women’s Champion Alexa Bliss was in the ring with the rest of the women when it was announced. Does that mean it is a title match? No one knows. It will feature women from both Raw and Smackdown however and assuming some NXT folk so we could in fact get 30 women. I hope it is over the top rope and not through the ropes like Women’s battle royals of the past.

- The tentative plan which is still being confirmed/discussed is for Ronda Rousey to debut in the Women’s Rumble match itself and likely win the Rumble. They will then begin building to her vs. Asuka for the WWE Raw Women’s Title at Mania. That is 100% the purpose behind Asuka no longer winning with the Asuka Lock and instead winning every match via arm bar. There will eventually be a Four Horsewomen vs. Four Horsewomen match but as of now, Rousey will be going solo at Mania and logic dictates that based on her popularity and how much they are likely paying her, she will be the one to end Asuka’s streak.

- Naomi has been officially announced as the first participant of the Women’s Rumble match.

- In what I think is cool, none of the women in the ring knew Stephanie’s announcement beforehand. They all found out about the Women’s Rumble Match when Stephanie announced it on television. So their reactions were genuine.

- While it could be possible as a surprise, both Trish Stratus and Beth Phoenix teased at competing in the Royal Rumble via social media. I’d like to see it.

- Dean Ambrose is in fact injured and it is fairly serious. He went into Raw with a severely injured elbow and the angle shot on Monday was to cover for it. He has a tendon tear in his triceps that was operated on by Dr. Jeffery Dugas who is the guy right beneath Dr. James Andrews in Birmingham Alabama on Wednesday. The tear was only 50% of the tendon which means he should be back in 6 – 8 months. A full tear would have kept him out for a year. He will absolutely miss the Royal Rumble and unless he has some of that John Cena healing powers, he will miss Wrestlemania too. The only bright side in this is that he could use the break. He has been non-stop for WWE for about 5 years now as he hasn’t missed any time due to injury and clocks in annually as the guy on the roster with the most matches overall per year.

- With the Royal Rumble the next PPV taking place, WWE has officially announced Elias as the first participant to be entered into the contest.

- Hideo Itami made his debut on RAW Monday saving Finn Balor from a 2 on 1 beat down at the hands of Curtis Axel and Bo Dallas. They noted that Itami and Balor were longtime friends from Japan. I feel sincerely bad for Itami as all of the setbacks he has had since being signed over 3 years ago, he has lost all steam and sense of confidence in the ring. He is nowhere near the KENTA they signed and has not lived up to the potential due to various factors. The has had two MAJOR injuries, some time adjusting to the WWE style, losing confidence in his ability. I mean, I am glad he got the opportunity to debut on RAW and what not, but I cannot fathom him becoming the star they thought he would be when they signed him.

- Itami also wrestled on 205 Live where he will wrestle full time and he squashed Colin Delaney in his debut. Yes, THAT Colin Delaney.

- Rockstar Spud was backstage at RAW, Smackdown and 205 Live this week. He is expected to debut soon.

- The talks with Dave Batista and WWE are still ongoing but Batista, despite being 49 years old and working a full schedule with his Marvel commitments, wants to have a serious final run with WWE that lasts up to a full year. If they do finalize him however and he comes back, the 2018 WWE Hall of Fame is OUT as he was the potential headliner next year and they would want to hold off inducting him.

- Other names being discussed for the Hall of Fame are Bill Goldberg (The other headliner after Batista), The Dudleys, Bam Bam Bigelow, Ivory and Kid Rock as the celebrity.

- While this certainly could change, Randy Orton is not advertised for any TV or live events from February 6th through April 9th. WOW.

- Jinder Mahal confirmed that he is wrestling with a torn labrum in his shoulder hence the difference in his physique between now and when he first won the WWE title. He is rehabbing it and working through it.

- WWE announced yesterday that the first hour of both Monday’s Christmas edition of RAW and Tuesday’s Smackdown will both air commercial free.

- WWE is trying to bolster ticket sales for their January 205 Live events that they are testing. Tickets are not moving rapidly so they have announced that these shows will be headlined by Bray Wyatt vs. “Woken” Matt Hardy, neither of which are 205 lbs.

- No news regarding Rich Swann and his legal issues yet other than the fact that no official charges have been filed as of this writing. If no charges are filed, he would in fact be cleared but as of now, he is awaiting word. His wife is NOT pressing charges and is back living with Swann once he was released.

- Ring of Honor’s War Machine of Hanson and Rowe are likely WWE bound pending their physicals. Rowe is the real life boyfriend of Sarah Logan from Smackdown.

- Congrats to Michael Bennett as he revealed he is now 5 months sober.

- Speaking of sober, despite announcing a few weeks back that following a WWE sponsored rebab program making him clean and sober for the first time in several years, former WWE/ECW star Justin Credible had an incident at an independent show last week where he showed up intoxicated and tried to hijack the show. He was escorted out of the building after being in no condition to perform.

- There is talks about a television production company looking to turn former WWE Diva A.J. Lee (now A.J. Brooks) book “Crazy is my Superpower” into a television series. Brooks is involved in the project and will be an executive producer on the show.

- If something were to come about this, it could cause a real headache for WWE if it was someone from the roster who perpetrated the act but former WWE Diva Melina Perez revealed that she has in fact been raped before. She did not go into further details as she was just commenting on all of the events going on in Hollywood with the posting and did not give any more details. If this however happened at the hands of someone in the WWE and under WWE’s watch then this is going to be HUGE.

- Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame last week.

- Speaking of the Rock, production has wrapped on “Fighting with my Family” which is the film he is producing based on the life of Paige and her family.

- I am hoping the blame isn’t placed on John Cena but his animated film Ferdinand BOMBED at the box office opening with a measly $13 million. How in the world did the studio that produced this film think it was smart to open against Star Wars? They absolutely should have moved the date.

WWE ROYAL RUMBLE PPV is on Sunday, January 28th, 2018 from Philadelphia Pennsylvania and the line-up is as follows:

  • WWE UNIVERSAL TITLE: Brock Lesnar © w/Paul Heyman vs. Braun Strowman vs. Kane
  • WWE MEN’S ROYAL RUMBLE MATCH: Elias/TBD
  • WWE WOMEN’S ROYAL RUMBLE MATCH: Bayley/Sasha Banks/Asuka/Nia Jax/Alicia Fox/Mickie James/Dana Brooke/Paige/Mandy Rose/Sonya Deville/Becky Lynch/Carmella/Natalya/Ruby Riott/Sarah Logan/Liv Morgan/Naomi/Lana/Tamina
  • GLOBAL FORCE IMPACT WRESTLING NEWS and NOTES:

    - There is no Impact news since this week’s show is a “BEST OF” and they won’t resume till January.

    - Dave Sahadi was NOT let go for salary purposes as he revealed that he had taken 5 different pay cuts over his 13 year TNA/GFW/Impact career to help alleviate costs for the promotion. So he was a company guy through and through. He was replaced by Michael Vedder who is a friend of Scott D’Amore.

Ring of Honor / Lucha Underground / Independent / International News and Notes:

    - Congrats to Dalton Castle as he defeated Cody Rhodes last week at “Final Battle” to capture the ROH World Title. Due to this, Rhodes match against Kota Ibushi at New Japan’s Wrestle Kingdom 12 will be a singles match as the ROH title was originally on the line.

    - ROH confirmed that they will be crowning a “Women of Honor” champion in 2018 with a tournament to begin on January 20th. It will be a tournament to run throughout 2018 with no brackets or set amount of women announced yet. They did confirm that the following women will participate in the tournament with more to be announced:

  • Brandi Rhodes
  • Deonna Purrazzo
  • Jenny Rose
  • Jessie Brooks
  • Kelly Klein
  • Mandy Leon
  • Stella Grey
  • Sumie Sakai
  • Mayu Iwatani
  • - It looks like Final Battle was War Machine’s last date and Wrestle Kingdom will be their last date with New Japan. They are most likely WWE bound.

    - Final Battle may have also been the final match of Bully Ray. It did not air on the PPV and won’t air on the television following the PPV but when they cut to something else following his match, he removed his boots following his loss and left them in the ring. He is expected to continue to work in ROH in a front office role but he is likely done with wrestling anymore.

    - New Japan has added a “NO DQ” stipulation to Kenny Omega vs. Chris Jericho.

    - Jericho’s appearance at Wrestle Kingdom isn’t a one shot deal as it is believed he will work or at least appear on the New Years Dash show on January 5th, one day after Wrestle Kingdom. He has also been trading barbs with Tetsuya Naito via social media.

    - Jericho did confirm to Sports Illustrated that he is NOT working WWE’s Wrestlemania this year. Fozzy does have a date booked on the same day as Mania.

    - In a smart way to add fuel to the fire for their match at Wrestle Kingdom, I.W.G.P champion Kazuchika Okada noted via his twitter that the only times he has NOT been in the main event of Wrestle Kingdom while champion are the two times he has faced Tetsuya Naito.

    - Both Jim Ross and Josh Barnett have signed extensions with AXS TV to be the commentators for New Japan Pro Wrestling for the 2018 year.

    - Will Ospreay will be in the U.S. over Wrestlemania weekend in April as he is booked for WWN that weekend working for Evolve. He will be wrestling against Matt Riddle on the Evolve show on April 5th. He is apparently done with Ring of Honor as his contract expired with Final Battle.

    - There is still a lot of heat on Michael Elgin with more and more independent promotions deciding against using him based on his situation involving that female fan that claims she was sexually harassed/assaulted by one of his former wrestlers. There is also a significant amount more to the story that has not been discussed publically which isn’t good for Elgin.

    - WWN also announced that they are launching a streaming service for Evolve and all of their other wrestling promotions such as Shimmer, old Dragon Gate USA stuff, etc. The price is $9.99 and will launch January 1st. Live iPPV events are NOT included however. While I am all on board for streaming services for promotions trying to make money, especially off their libraries, I cannot fathom how’d they charge the same as the WWE Network and NOT include iPPV’s live. That is insanity to me.

    - Preston City Wrestling in the U.K. announced that WWE’s Apollo Crews will be wrestling in their “Road to Glory” Tournament on February 10th. Crews was the promotion’s Heavyweight Champion from November 2014 through March 2015 when he wrestled under the name Uhaa Nation.

    - Joey Ryan continues his mainstream media crossover as at a “Bar Wrestling” show held last week in Southern California, his six person match had a run in by actor Macaulay Culkin which involved Culkin recreating some scenes from his hit film “Home Alone”. Folks, Joey Ryan, Candice LeRae, The Young Bucks, Cody Rhodes and Kenny Omega are examples of how you can succeed in independent wrestling without having to be in WWE. In all honesty, while The Bucks and Omega are bigger names throughout wrestling worldwide, Ryan may be bigger in the U.S. based on his “dick” gimmick. It is amazing to see.

    - WrestlePro will have UFC’s Colby Covington debut on the February 3rd show in Rahway New Jersey. This was likely the doing of Kevin Matthews a.k.a. KM in TNA as he is a HUGE UFC fan and worked with Covington in TNA as part of the Bobby Lashley angle.

    - Thoughts and prayers go out to Grado as his mother passed away following a bout with cancer.

NEW JAPAN PRO WRESTLING’S WRESTLE KINGDOM 12 is on Sunday, January 4th, 2018 from Tokyo Japan and the line-up is as follows:

  • IWGP WORLD TITLE: Kazuchika Okada © vs. Tetsuya Naito
  • IWGP INTERCONTINENAL TITLE: Hiroshi Tanahashi © vs. Switchblade Jay White)
  • IWGP UNITED STATES TITLE: “The Cleaner” Kenny Omega © vs. “Lionheart” Chris Jericho
  • ROH WORLD TITLE: Cody © (Should he still be champion) vs. Kota Ibushi
  • IWGP JUNIOR TITLE: Marty Scurll © vs. Will Ospreay vs. KUSHIDA vs. Hiromu Takahashi
  • IWGP TAG TEAM TITLES: Lance Archer & Davey Boy Smith Jr. © vs. Evil & Sanada
  • NEVER TITLE: Minoru Suzuki © vs. Hiroki Goto IF GOTO LOSES, HE LOSES HIS HAIR
  • IWGP JUNIOR TAG TEAM TITLES: Roppongi 3K (Sho & Yoh) © vs. The Young Bucks (Matt & Nick Jackson)
  • MMA News and Notes:

    - Dana White revealed to ESPN on Wednesday that UFC has begun talks with Floyd Mayweather about him stepping into the octagon for a potential UFC fight. While obviously the financial considerations would be HUGE for both Floyd and UFC since they’d make MILLIONS, Floyd will get murdered. There is no wiggle room for interpretation. There is a 0% chance Floyd can beat anyone in an MMA rules fight. NONE. Not happening. Floyd is 40 years old and has no training outside of boxing. He’d have to learn, at age 40, how to defend against wrestling, jiu-jitsu, striking such as kicks and elbows, etc. Even then if he were to train for a year, he’d still be a novice at it and would be killed by much lesser talent than Conor McGregor. McGregor would finish Floyd quickly.

    - If a deal could be reached with Mayweather, the potential plan as of now is to try and match him up in his debut against C.M. Punk. Not for nothing, that fight could draw money and makes a lot more sense than Floyd vs. Conor as Conor would murder Floyd in an octagon. Punk….that is a tough call.

    - Mayweather has however walked any potential MMA career back by noting that he doesn’t plan on fighting in MMA. This of course caused an Instagram post by Conor McGregor with his two UFC titles flexing while calling someone a “P*SSY”. That posting went up shortly after Floyd’s comments made the news.

    - Conor McGregor noted last week that despite hype to the contrary including a potential boxing match with Manny Pacquiao, he fully wants his next fight to be in MMA.

    - The $600 million earned by the Floyd Mayweather vs. Conor McGregor fight equals about 9 months of revenue for WWE or 11 months of revenue for UFC. That should tell you all you need to know about boxing revenue based on name value and how despite having no stars, how boxing has managed to stay alive without growing many larger than life names.

    - UFC Welterweight Champion Tyrone Woodley underwent successful shoulder surgery earlier this week. He will be out of action until the spring at the earliest. Upon his return, he will likely fight Rafael Dos Anjos as Dos Anjos defeated Robbie Lawler last weekend in a 5 round main event of the UFC on Fox show.

UFC 219 is on Saturday, December 30th, 2017 from Las Vegas Nevada and the line-up is as follows:

  • UFC WOMEN’S FEATHERWEIGHT TITLE: Cris “Cyborg” Justino © vs. Holly Holm
  • Jimmie Rivera vs. TBD
  • Cynthia Cavillo vs. Carla Esparza
  • Carlos Condit vs. Neil Magny
  • Edson Barboza vs. Khabib Nurmagomedov
  • UFC 220 is on Saturday, January 20th, 2018 from Boston Massachusetts and the line-up is as follows:

  • UFC HEAVYWEIGHT TITLE: Stipe Miocic © vs. Francis Ngannou
  • UFC LIGHTHEAVYWEIGHT TITLE: Daniel Cormier © vs. Volkhan Oezdemir
  • UFC ON FOX is on Saturday, January 27th, 2018 from Charlotte North Carolina and the line-up is as follows:

  • Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza vs. Derek Brunson
  • Ovince St. Pruex vs. Ilir Latifi
  • UFC 221 is on Saturday, February 11th, 2018 from Perth Australia and the line-up is as follows:

  • UFC MIDDLEWEIGHT TITLE: Robert Whitaker © vs. Luke Rockhold
  • Mark Hunt vs. Curtis Blaydes

    - THIS LINK is for LIFE. Thank you soldiers. WELCOME HOME BLOG.

    - BONUS Random ARTICLE of the week: Damn, these stories always suck. Traveling too fast or something getting in the way, all these people were trying to do was get on with their day as usual.

    - BONUS Random ARTICLE of the week PART 1: This is absolutely one of the strangest, sad and most f*cked up stories I have ever come across. Wow, definition of insanity.

    - BONUS Random ARTICLE of the week PART 2: Glad to see this is over and the right decision was rendered as I fully believe from day one that this was strictly a cash grab by Robeson.

    - BONUS Random ARTICLE of the week PART 3: Damn, this guy wasn’t playing any games with his wife huh? Savage. Sick thing to do, but savage nonetheless.

    - BONUS Random ARTICLE of the week PART 4: Absolutely could be the end of U.S.A. gymnastics as we know it. I don’t blame her at all nor would I blame the other gymnasts if they decide to do the same.

    - BONUS Random ARTICLE of the week PART 5: Many people aren’t going to realize how big of a deal this is right away. It is going to take some time but believe me, it is HUGE.

    - BONUS Random ARTICLE of the week PART 6: Another story I have been following closely since the beginning especially since it is in my home city. Crazy.

    - Star Wars: The Last Jedi….excellent film. Yes, I have seen the complaints on it and while some are valid (including one MAJOR one involving a major character), most aren’t. I get how people are upset that some of their favorites did not get or are not getting the proper amount of screen or storyline time in these films which can be heartbreaking to those who grew up on the Star Wars Universe but as this film pretty much cemented, the story is NOT about them. It is about new characters and their new journey. That is why I am on board. If you look at it through those eyes, you embrace the film more. If you look at it through rose colored glassed thinking it is supposed to be the Star Wars you remember, then you are going to not like it. But for the most part, the major happenings in the movie all made sense from the big picture view. Especially the Luke involved stuff.

    - The film passed $500 million as of this writing. WOW. By comparison, Justice League is likely going to close out its run with $675 million worldwide.

    - In a surprise move, it appears that Fox’s “Gambit” film has NOT been scrapped due to the Disney/Fox deal and the movie is still set to begin filming in March 2018. Not to say that Disney doesn’t change their minds on this but as of now, actor Channing Tatum is set to take the mantle of Gambit with a release date still on track for February 2019.

    - Some ending to Agents of Shield last week. I am all in on this season of the show and the storyline direction they took. I’ve seen that some people aren’t on board and that is a real shame since I feel like they are on par with last season so far. Good stuff.

    - There are rumors about that that 2nd Arc of Shield this season is set to introduce Blade into the universe. That would be cool.

    - Filming has begun on Netflix’s season 2 of “Iron Fist”. No release date has been set but with Jessica Jones and Luke Cage confirmed to debut in 2018 and both Daredevil season 3 and Iron Fist currently in production, it is entirely possible that we may get 4 Marvel/Netflix shows airing in 2018.

    - In news that is both exciting and terrifying all at the same time, Kevin Feige revealed in an interview that Thanos will prove himself as Marvel’s biggest villain by FAR within the first 5 minutes of Avengers: “Infinity War”. Wow.

    - With Slade Wilson and Deathstroke being involved in the DC Film Universe, WB has been informed that they once again can NOT use him in the Arrow-verse for their shows. So Manu Bennett is once again OFF out television screens. That sucks because before the season started, he was supposed to be cast across a few episodes.

    - Paramount Pictures revealed that they tentatively have a new G.I. Joe film in the works set for March 2020. There is no talk of a script or plot therefore we do not know if it is a continuation of the franchise or a reboot. We also do not know if Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson will reprise his role in the franchise.
