T.G.I.F. with Matt Dawgs: #378

Good day to you all and welcome to We Want Insanity. I am your host for today, Matt Dawgs and this is my column. Today is the end of the work week and the time to look back at all the goings-on over the past seven days as I wrap it up with a bow and spout it out bit by bit. Buckle up. Enjoy the ride.

MATT NOTE: Friendly reminder that this week will be my last column of 2016. I will be back on January 6th, 2017. Not sure if we are having a fill-in next week (James Bullock) or do a “Best Of” column or what. I trust that Guttman will figure it out.

WWE NEWS AND NOTES:

- 4 down and 12 more to go for Charlotte as she captured her 4th WWE RAW Women’s title on Sunday at Roadblock End of the Line defeating Sasha Banks in a poorly booked Ironman match. Don’t get me wrong, the work in the ring was damn good and both Charlotte and Sasha are cementing their place as the top 2 WWE in ring performers of all time but come on, going the first 20 minutes of a 30 minute Ironman match without a fall only to have the rest of the falls come in rapid succession was terrible. Plus, having HEEL Charlotte overcome a 2 – 1 deficit with just 2 SECONDS LEFT from the end to tie it and force overtime. I get the need to add drama to the match but it doesn’t work properly if the babyface taps with 2 seconds left. It would have worked better if Sasha tapped with like two minutes left so it was tied and then have Charlotte lock it in again leading fans to believe she would tap and lose but hold on so that we get the overtime. Then in overtime have a HEEL Charlotte make BABYFACE Sasha Banks submit cleanly after having her submit cleanly several minutes earlier to tie? Mind blown. They completely booked Charlotte as a babyface. WTF?

- I am glad that they are moving Charlotte to Bayley and Sasha to Nia Jax. I don’t want the feud to be completely gone though. They need to go back to it one day in the future. Very far future, but in the future nonetheless.

- Dana Brooke is gone...temporarily. She has been granted permission to compete in the annual 2017 Arnold Classic Fitness contest in March. Being that she used to be a fitness model prior to joining WWE, she is going to be training extensively for this contest meaning she is going to have to drop considerable weight thus get back to looking like the Dana Brooke of NXT. This will likely create opportunity once she returns since part of the reason she was buried so quickly was because of her look. She competed in last year’s Arnold Classic placing 13th overall.

- P.S. The Sasha/Charlotte shift is partly due to Vince McMahon souring on Sasha. He is NOT her biggest fan. There are plans however for her to go heel once again as she is much better in that role. Her style has also slightly changed as she is no longer taking “rag doll” bumps which were once of the reasons she was getting injured so frequently.

- The New Day’s title reign is over with. Cesaro and Sheamus captured the tag team titles at Roadblock End of the Line and they were gifted NEW titles on Monday’s RAW. Shout out to Big E for the awesome joke upon his RAW entrance. For those who missed it, Kofi Kingston noted that Ric Flair was 16 time World Champion meaning he had to lose it 15 times. Big E. then noted that would be Charlotte by the end of next month. LOL.

- Neville has gone HEEL!!! YAY!!! We have a heel Neville in the Cruiserweight division. Glad to see someone in the WWE hierarchy has smartened up and are making him the centerpiece of the division. .

- Mick Foley was scheduled for a mini-vacation and skip Roadblock and RAW this week as he has requested some personal time off due to his body being in rough shape physically despite him losing over 100 lbs. in a year. Instead he in fact showed up to both after being asked at the last minute. Foley needs hip replacement surgery soon and thus will be off his feet for some time meaning he will have to be written off television for several months.

- Speaking of being out for several months, Zack Ryder had successful knee surgery on his ruptured patella last week and will be out of action for 6 – 9 months. It sucks because he is going to miss Wrestlemania.

- Jericho put Santa on the list. That was awesome.

- Proving how good both of them are on their feet was fantastic as both Jericho and Owens covered for Foley saying “Pittsburgh PA” when they were in Columbus Ohio. They legit both thought on their feet and almost said the same exact line to cover the blunder.

- Strowman & Reigns? Really? Something thinks this is a good idea?

- Smackdown was pretty non-eventful this week with A.J. Styles obliterating James Ellsworth in under a minute and hopefully finally getting Ellsworth out of the main event picture.

- I am intrigued to see where they are going with the Miz making the reveal that Dean Ambrose and Renee Young are a couple in real life. Yes, I know that it is on Total Divas but believe me when I say that there are two very distinct audiences between Total Divas and WWE Raw & Smackdown.

- They are pushing next week’s Smackdown real hard as they have 3 title matches on the show with A.J. defending the title in a 3-way against Dolph Ziggler and Baron Corbin, the Wyatt’s defending the tag titles in a 4-way with American Alpha, The Usos and Rhyno & Heath Slater as well as Alexa Bliss defending the Women’s title against Becky Lynch.

- Both nights of the WWE U.K. title tournament have SOLD OUT. The building in Blackpool England that they are running seats about 2,000 people. They are expected to air LIVE on the WWE network January 14th and 15th. All of the talents signed to the tournament have WWE contracts now and cannot work for the MAJOR WWE competitors like TNA or ROH. They can continue working for independent groups in the U.K. and Europe so long as the dates they book do not conflict with WWE dates they are requested for. The eventual goal, much like the Cruiserweight Classic is to make this U.K. show a weekly show airing on a station in the U.K. instead of the WWE Network.

- WWE has signed independent female star Andrea formerly known as Rosie Lottalove/Betsy Ruth to a developmental deal. She will be reporting to the WWE Performance Center soon. For those who do not remember her, she is best remembered for being the overweight female who almost KILLED Daffney in TNA. She was trained by The Dudley Boyz out of their wrestling school and has improved by leaps and bounds since that incident. She has also changed her physique so she is no longer “big” and instead has improved her physique. She went from THIS and changed to now look like THIS. Amazing.

- The NXT Takeover: Orlando show the night before Wrestlemania is already sold out. All 14,000 tickets are gone.

- Exclusive FIRST LOOK at the ESPN 30 for 30 documentary on “Nature Boy” Ric Flair.

NXT TAKEOVER SAN ANTONIO is on Saturday, January 28th, 2017 from San Antonio Texas and the line-up is as follows:

  • NXT WORLD TITLE: Shinsuke Nakamura © vs. Bobby Roode
  • NXT TAG TEAM TITLES: D.I.Y. (Tommaso Ciampa & Johnny Gargano) vs. The Authors of Pain
  • WWE ROYAL RUMBLE PPV is on Sunday, January 29th, 2017 from San Antonio Texas and the line-up is as follows:

  • ROYAL RUMBLE MATCH: Brock Lesnar / Bill Goldberg /
  • WWE UNIVERSAL TITLE: Kevin Owens © vs. Roman Reigns w/Chris Jericho in a shark cage above the ring
  • TNA IMPACT WRESTLING NEWS and NOTES:

    - I did manage to see “Total Nonstop Deletion” and it was as expected, fantastic. Matt Hardy is sheer genius. Yes, some of it is campy but is so far away from what every other promotion in the world is doing that it works. It is FUN and that is what counts. I think that if TNA chose to continue down this route and run events that are similar to this, it would benefit them.

    - Reby’s revelation to end the show is in fact true. Her and Matt Hardy are expecting their 2nd child.

    - I did not see last night’s Impact but it was NOT new footage. It was a year in review type show. Or a “Best of”.

    - Impact’s 1st show under Anthem Sports will be on January 5th. The show will be on one hour tape delay.

    - TNA is running a “One Night Only” PPV on Friday, January 6th. No details as to the concept of the show as of yet. They are doing their first set of TV tapings since Billy Corgan leaving on January 5th through January 12th.

    - Drew Galloway’s TNA contract expires in February. They have been trying to sign him to an extension but he does not want to be locked into having TNA control his independent bookings so it looks like he will be leaving the promotion soon. Probably as soon as next week’s television tapings that are set to run into February.

    - The 7 DAYS OF DELETION!!!!

Ring of Honor / Lucha Underground / Independent / International News and Notes:

    - Apparently Ricochet and Will Ospreay had a match in Dublin last Saturday that was said to be BETTER than their infamous New Japan match earlier this year. I don’t even know what to say to that.

    - Both Billy Corgan and Dave Lagana have met with Ring of Honor recently.

    - ROH is trying to extend the contracts of all talents who have expiring deals soon. They know WWE is being aggressive in locking up talents and are trying to be preemptive.

    - EVOLVE World Champion Timothy Thatcher has been medically cleared to resume training and will be returning to the ring at the end of January. He has been out of action since October with a severe concussion.

    - Matt Sydal made his return to wrestling for the first time since his arrest in Tokyo over last weekend at PWG’s “Mystery Vortex” show wrestling against Pete Dunne. The show’s title comes from the fact that NO MATCHES are announced beforehand. You only see who is wrestling when the matches takes place. The only announced match in advance is the main event. The show was a sellout without a lineup.

    - New Japan Pro Wrestling president Takaaki Kidani was asked about the upcoming WWE UK tournament and he noted in his reply that this is WWE’s way of trying to create a global network of territories so that they can tie up talent to contracts to prevent them from working for other rival companies. He expects them to try and break into the Japan market soon and notes that they have already gotten their hands on Hideo Itami, Shinsuke Nakamura, Kota Ibushi, Akira Tozawa and Asuka.

    - Michael Elgin is back following his orbital bone surgery and wrestled last weekend in Texas.

    - Alberto El Patron confirmed earlier this week that he is in talks to make his return to AAA in Mexico. AAA also confirmed the story.

    - Joe Doering will be wrestling his first match for All Japan in March. He has been out of action for over a year after undergoing brain surgery to remove cancer.

    - Best wishes to Pro Wrestling NOAH’s Quiet Storm. I trained with Quiet Storm many years ago when he trained in Brooklyn. He is a quiet guy in general hence the name and patterned his work after Chris Benoit. Anyway, he suffered a ruptured bicep in Japan and will be out of action for 6 to 9 months. Much respect to him as he is a small (height wise) guy who during his early career wouldn’t get much of a look based on his size. He was actually part of the original ROH crew when the promotion started. Anyway, he left to Japan on his own and has been there ever since. Apparently I believe he has lived there for 10 years now.

    - Season 4 of Lucha Underground will NOT begin taping until October 2017. This is HUGE for those who are signed to LU deals because their contracts specifically state that they are bound to stay with the company thus are prevented from signing with any other promotion until AFTER season 4 airs meaning they are bound to their LU deals until 2018 the earliest.

NEW JAPAN PRO WRESTLING WRESTLE KINGDOM 11 is on Saturday, January 4th, 2017 from Tokyo Japan and the line-up is as follows:

  • IWGP WORLD TITLE: Kazuchika Okada © vs. Kenny Omega
  • IWGP INTERCONTINENTAL TITLE: Tetsuya Naito © vs. Hiroshi Tanahasi
  • NEVER OPENWEIGHT TITLE: Katsuyori Shibata © vs. Hirooki Goto
  • IWGP JUNIOR TITLE: Kushida © vs. Hiromu Takahashi
  • IWGP TAG TEAM TITLES: The Guerrillas of Destiny © (Tama Tonga & Tanga Roa) vs. G.B.H.(Togi Makabe & Tomoaki Honma) vs. Tomohiro Ishii & Toru Yano
  • RING OF HONOR WORLD TITLE: Kyle O’Reilly © vs. Adam Cole
  • ”The American Nightmare” Cody vs. Juice Robinson
  • NEVER OPENWEIGHT SIX MAN TITLES: David Finlay/Ricochet/Satoshi Kojima © vs. The Bullet Club (Bad Luck Fale/Hangman Page/Yujiro Takahashi) vs. Chaos (Will Ospreay/Jado/Yohsi-Hashi) vs. Los Ingobernables de Japan (Bushi/Evil/Sanada)
  • IWGP JUNIOR TAG TITLES: The Young Bucks © (Matt & Nick Jackson) vs. Roppongi Vice (Beretta & Rocky Romero)
  • Tiger Mask W (Originally Kota Ibushi) vs. Tiger the Dark (ACH)
  • New Japan Rumble Match
  • MMA News and Notes:

    - I don’t know if this is good or bad but apparently Ronda Rousey has informed UFC that she is not doing any further media for UFC 207 next Friday including the final press conference.

    - Dominick Cruz PAYS RESPECT to Urijah Faber. Faber won last Saturday in what was his retirement from MMA. A hell of a career for Faber.

    - Faber noted that he was stressed going into the fight knowing it was his last. He threw up for the first time in his career before the fight. Coincidentally another first took place for him as it was the first time in his entire career that referee John McCarthy reffed one of his fights.

    - The UFC “Golden Boy” lost a little bit more luster last weekend as Sage Northcutt was defeated by Mickey Gall in impressive fashion. Gall submitted him via rear naked choke. Following the win, Gall called out Dan Hardy however Hardy has since turned down the fight offer.

    - Also losing some shine is Paige VanZant as she was defeated in her fight to Michelle Waterson via submission.

    - Yesterday afternoon, Cristiane “Cyborg” Justino was informed that she has been flagged for a possible anti-doping violation by USADA. SMH. This is not good for her.

    - Joe Silva’s final show with UFC will be next Friday at UFC 207 in Las Vegas. He is done with the company following that show.

    - Cain Velasquez is still fighting against Fabricio Werdum next Friday at UFC 207 but noted that he will be undergoing yet ANOTHER back surgery following the fight which will keep him out of action for a while. Velasquez has a major history of back problems and this will be his 3rd surgery for it. Father time is catching up to him with the quickness.

    - MMA will now have some new rules implemented in 2017 according to the Association of Boxing Commissions. The rule changes may not immediately go into effect but will at some point across the board.

  • Heel strikes to the kidney are now LEGAL. This is a tactic that Royce Gracie used to use religiously when in the guard in the early days of UFC.
  • The definition of a grounded opponent is now a person with TWO hands on the ground. In the past, a fighter with only one hand on the ground was listed as downed thus could not be attacked further.
  • It is deemed illegal to extend the hands towards an opponent with your fingers open. This is the “Jon Jones” rule as it will eliminate accidental eye pokes.
  • You are now allowed to grab the clavicle.
  • - Gegard Mousasi is claiming that he was offered a fight vs. Chris Weidman and has been pushing on social media for Weidman to accept it. Weidman has since noted that Mousasi is one of the names that he has been offered among a few others however he is still currently rehabbing at the moment.

    - UFC has announced that Mark Hunt will face off with Alistair Overeem on UFC 209 on March 4th however Hunt is claiming that he will NOT accept the fight unless he gets a clause placed in the contract noting that he gets 100% of Overeem’s purse if Overeem fails a drug test for this fight. 0% chance that UFC or Overeem goes for this but honestly, I think it is a solid way to deter people from taking PEDs.

    - UFC is looking at running a show in Moscow sometime in 2017 and UFC owners Ari Emmanuel and UFC President Dana White recently flew there to meet with the Deputy Prime Minister of Russia, Vitaly Mutko.

UFC 207 is on Friday, December 30th, 2016 from Las Vegas Nevada and the line-up is as follows:

  • UFC WOMEN’S BANTAMWEIGHT TITLE: Amanda Nunes © vs. Ronda Rousey
  • UFC BANTAMWEIGHT TITLE: Dominick Cruz © vs. Cody Garbrandt
  • Cain Velasquez vs. Fabricio Werdum
  • Doo Ho Choi vs. Cub Swanson
  • Johnny Hendricks vs. Neil Magny
  • Dong Hyun Kim vs. Tarec Saffiedine
  • Alex Oliveira vs. Tim Means
  • UFC on FOX 23 is on Saturday, January 28th, 2017 from Denver Colorado and the line-up is as follows:

  • Donald Cerrone vs. Jorge Masvidal
  • UFC 208 is on Saturday, February 11th, 2017 from Brooklyn New York and the line-up is as follows:

  • VACANT UFC WOMEN’S FEATHERWEIGHT TITLE: Holly Holm vs. Germaine de Randamie
  • Travis Browne vs. Derrick Lewis
  • Dustin Poirier vs. Jim Miller

    - I did manage to end up sneaking in ”Star Wars: Rogue One” last Sunday and it was EPIC. I already have it places in my top 5 Star Wars films and once I view it a second time, possibly top 3 (Empire and Force Awakens are top 2 for me with Revenge of the Sith, Return of the Jedi and Rogue One rounding out the top 5). I highly recommend.

    - With the success of Rogue One as well as the remaining hits they have made this year, by Christmas Day it is expected that Disney will become the first movie studio in history to make $7 BILLION in one calendar year. WOW.

    - Thor: Ragnarok director Taika Waititi confirmed that the planet Sakaar will be featured in the film. That all but confirms that the story will be Planet Hulk!!!
