T.G.I.F. with Matt Dawgs: #426

Good day to you all and welcome to We Want Insanity. I am your host for today, Matt Dawgs and this is my column. Today is the end of the work week and the time to look back at all the goings-on over the past seven days as I wrap it up with a bow and spout it out bit by bit. Buckle up. Enjoy the ride.

IMPORTANT MATT NOTE:: I am hoping that you readers have taken the time to lend a hand and donated to the JAIDAN STRONG cause for me. I’d really appreciate it if you did; as little as $5 can go a long way. If not, it isn’t a big deal but please at least SHARE THE LINK. I get that finances can be tough for some but taking the time to share a link via your social media doesn’t cost a dime. I’d appreciate it greatly as one of your friends or family members may be able to help out. Thanks.

- For the first time that I can remember, RAW ran LIVE on Christmas on Monday with the first hour being 100% commercial free. The show was pretty lackluster overall with the exception of a tag team title change that saw WWE put an apparent halt on Jason Jordan’s heel turn as he and Seth Rollins captured the WWE tag team titles from The Bar of Sheamus and Cesaro.

- By the way, I am just saying that it would have been significantly better if Finn Balor took Ambrose’s place alongside Rollins. That would have given him something to do and put him in a main event level angle while you continue down the road for Jason Jordan’s heel turn. Instead, Balor did nothing of note on Monday other than squashing Curt Hawkins. That should show you where Balor is on the pecking order.

- John Cena returned to television and defeated Elias in a lackluster match. It was NOT a burial of Elias as he held his own but the match itself was nothing to write home about. It was very basic and kind of lengthy.

- WWE stands for Walk With Elias”. That was f*cking GOLD.

- Tough news for Dean Ambrose as WWE confirmed that his recovery period will be 9 months. His target return date will be right around Summerslam in August.

- Samoa Joe is awesome. WWE did some nice subtle things in his backstage interview with Renee Young. Young had to be a professional despite her being upset that Joe “injured” her husband Dean Ambrose. Joe, without making her marriage to Dean a “thing” cut a promo noting that Dean’s family should be thanking him since he now gets to spend time at home for the holidays. The look on Renee’s face when he said that was awesome. LOL.

- So Asuka has been officially named a participant in the Women’s Rumble match. I assumed they would give Asuka the title prior to Rumble to build to her vs. Rousey. With Asuka in the match, I cannot see Rousey being involved since it would kill the build up to their face to face. And you cannot have someone else eliminate Asuka from the Rumble because it would kill her aura. So with that being said, I am assuming that they are not going to debut Rousey in the Rumble match. I am also assuming that Asuka wins the rumble.

- Rousey also has a moving filming soon called “Mile 22” which would make it difficult to work the Rumble as shooting starts in January.

- I am hoping and praying that something is done because I am NOT on board with “Woken” Matt Hardy. WWE is doing exactly what many said they would and that is dropping the ball on an angle delivered with a bow to their lap. This is so NOT what the “Woken” character was in TNA and it is on life support already. It also shows me that WWE did NOT give full creative control to Hardy because this is NOT his work.

- Hardy did wrestle on the Madison Square Garden holiday show on Tuesday and came out to Beethoven’s “Moonlight Sonata” which was the theme that he used as “Broken” Matt on Impact Wrestling.

- Hideo Itami is DEAD in the water. I feel real bad for him. His time in WWE isn’t going to be long. He is going to get buried sooner rather than later. They need to turn him heel ASAP but I don’t even know if that would make a difference. Honestly, the f*cking guy did a GTS in Chicago to ZERO REACTION. That had easy pop written all over it.

- For those wondering, WWE.Com did confirm that Brian Kendrick did get legit injured taking the GTS and will miss about 2 months of action as he suffered a broken orbital bone and a broken nose at the hands of the move. For those of you who watched 205 Live, Itami did NOT use the GTS as a finisher and instead won with an octopus hold submission.

- John Cena apparently has a BIG MATCH scheduled for Wrestlemania and the seeds are going to be planted for it at the 25th Anniversary RAW show in Brooklyn/Manhattan on January 22nd. My bet is that it is Cena vs. Taker as there isn’t really any other matches that they can do that would be considered “BIG” unless WWE has somehow convinced Steve Austin to come out of retirement. Taker is scheduled to be at the 25th Anniversary show. While I am ok with the match because Cena vs. Taker absolutely should have happened at Mania at some point, I am extremely disappointed that Taker is not retiring after last year when he left his gear in the ring. It is now getting pretty ridiculous that he “retires” every Mania. Is that the new streak? Every Mania is his last? He should hang it up. Believe me, I get his motives since he feels like his body can do one more match each year and I cannot imagine it being an easy decision to turn down a million dollars for one match but enough is enough.

- WWE could also go with either Goldberg which would be big but limit the match they have or a returning Batista. Batista makes sense in that it would be his return but that doesn’t feel overly big. Taker, Austin or Goldberg are the biggest that they can do.

- Brock Lesnar has also now been confirmed for the January 22nd RAW meaning it is an all hands on deck show with Cena, Lesnar, Shawn Michaels, Diesel, HHH and other surprises announced. I fully expected “Stone Cold” Steve Austin to at least be asked to appear and I can imagine if his schedule is free, The Rock making an appearance.

- In an interview with CBS Sports, Kurt Angle revealed that there are plans for him to wrestle more in 2018.

- Being that WWE is turning the Money in the Bank PPV to a dual brand PPV in 2018 thus making it 5 dual brand PPV events as opposed to the “Big 4”, NXT will be running a Takeover show during MITB weekend in Chicago in June.

- Kari Sane appeared as a guest on the last Stardom show in Japan last weekend. She did not wrestle but was given permission to appear by WWE as one of her mentors, Yoko Bito retired. She came out unannounced and presented Bito with flowers in the ring.

- Sane was also “choked out” on NXT this week by the officially debuting Shayna Baszler. So that is awesome.

- NXT tapes their next set of TV next week on January 4th at Center Stage in Atlanta. The full NXT roster is expected to be there as they build for Takeover: Philadelphia. Velveteen Dream is also expected to return then as he disappeared from TV and live events following his loss to Aleister Black at Takeover: Houston.

- The latest Marine film starring the Miz has wrapped production so expect Miz and Becky Lynch back on television shortly, possibly as soon as next week.

- Kalisto was injured last week on 205 Live when a fan tossed a full, semi-frozen water bottle from the stands that hit Kalisto in the face. The fan was apprehended by security however Kalisto did wrestle this week prior to RAW on The Main Event so he did not miss any time.

- Also wrestling on the Main Event, the Revival. I guarantee you all that this is NOT a good thing that one week after their return, they were relegated to the Main Event. That cannot be promising for them.

- I don’t know where WWE is going with this Dolph Ziggler angle. He won the U.S. title and just disappeared and now they are having a tournament to crown a new U.S. champion. Thing is, Ziggler is still under contract and hasn’t been fired or quit. Now I assume they are doing it to further the Bryan and Shane angle but it is still weird.

- Former U.S. champion Baron Corbin was eliminated by Bobby Roode in the first round of the tournament. Boy has his stock fallen.

- The remainder of the brackets were revealed on wwe.com yesterday with Mojo Rawley vs. Zack Ryder where the winner takes on Bobby Roode and Xavier Woods vs. Aiden English with the winner taking on Jinder Mahal also announced. I assume we are heading to a Roode vs. Mahal final with Jinder winning the U.S. Title.

- EVERY DAY IS RUSEV DAY!!!! Has there ever been someone on the roster who was given more sh*t gimmicks and angles than Rusev and manages to get them over? This guy needs to be pushed to the moon. The only other guy I can think of was Daniel Bryan and Wade Barrett. Bryan with the Kane angle and the Yes/No gimmick which he turned into a phenomenon and Barrett with the “Bad News Barrett” gimmick. But Rusev has had multiple turns with sh*tty angles/gimmicks and has turned them all into GOLD.

- Looks like we are getting new Smackdown tag team champions next week as Chad Gable and Shelton Benjamin take on the Usos for the championships.

- Kevin Owens will be the next challenger for the WWE title and feud with A.J. Styles. Due to Owens getting the shot, Shane and Bryan will be involved with this feud as well.

- Bryan did reveal in a recent interview that WWE is still sticking to their guns and not clearing him to wrestle. If it were anyone else, I would claim they were lying and just sticking to the story in order for it to be a surprise but by all accounts, Bryan is 100% factual when it comes to his fans and he wouldn’t lie about it just to keep a surprise. My assumption is that WWE is milking it and eventually they will clear him because I cannot see them going down the path they are going with Shane and him unless it leads to a match and even if it doesn’t I cannot see them letting him go in the fall of 2018 when his contract expires and having him go to New Japan or Ring of Honor full time and giving those companies a major boost.

- The Nationwide Arena in Columbus Ohio is advertising the main event of the Fast Lane PPV being A.J. Styles vs. Randy Orton vs. Kevin Owens vs. Sami Zayn vs. Shinsuke Nakamura. Suffice to say that likely means that a RAW guy is winning the Royal Rumble. With Brock vs. Roman penciled in for Mania, I cannot fathom WWE would be stupid enough to have Roman win the Rumble in Philadelphia of all places so something has to be up and some sort of swerve is coming.

- Please do yourself a favor and watch Tyler Bate vs. Pete Dunne from NXT last week. WOW.

- Johnny Gargano is the new number 1 contender to the NXT World Title winning a 4 way on this week’s episode of NXT. While I do not know a timetable yet and this is pure speculation, it would be amazing for Gargano to come close to winning the title at Takeover: Philadelphia only to have Tommaso Ciampa come back and cost him the title. I know Ciampa is due back in early 2018 but originally I heard it would be February or March. If he is ahead of schedule though, that storyline would get SO MUCH HEAT.

- If it wasn’t for bad luck, Paige would have no luck at all. Earlier this week, a ton, and I mean a F*CKING TON more pictures from Paige’s leaked cell phone pictures were released; something in the neighborhood of 500 to 700 pictures. Some were private with family and friends and stuff but there were a ton more nudes and in sexual compromising positions. Complete videos were also released, some of which we have only seen snippets of when the original leak happened. To top off the cake however, at a live event on Wednesday, Paige injured her back in a six women tag match when she was kicked by Sasha Banks and something happened in her back or neck where she went limp and the match had to be stopped. A stretcher was called out however Paige refused and had to be helped to the back. She will be reevaluated by her doctor but I am hoping that she did not re-injure her neck or undo any of the good her recent neck surgery did. WWE did confirm that she was being pulled from all live events this weekend as a precaution.

- Rey Mysterio revealed last week that there has been no communication between himself and WWE in some time now however he absolutely would love to go back and “finish up” with WWE. He did note that he wouldn’t be able to physically work a full time schedule anymore but knows there is unfinished business and would love to go back one day.

- Former WWE Diva Kaitlyn will be making her return to wrestling on February 10th for Coastal Championship Wrestling in Florida. She has been training for an eventual WWE return for months now.

- Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson noted last week that while still 100% serious about running for President of the United States one day, he will NOT be running in 2020 and noted the earliest he would consider would be 2024.

WWE ROYAL RUMBLE PPV is on Sunday, January 28th, 2018 from Philadelphia Pennsylvania and the line-up is as follows:

  • WWE UNIVERSAL TITLE: Brock Lesnar © w/Paul Heyman vs. Braun Strowman vs. Kane
  • WWE MEN’S ROYAL RUMBLE MATCH: Elias/Randy Orton/Shinsuke Nakamura
  • WWE WOMEN’S ROYAL RUMBLE MATCH: Bayley/Sasha Banks/Asuka/Nia Jax/Alicia Fox/Mickie James/Dana Brooke/Paige/Mandy Rose/Sonya Deville/Becky Lynch/Carmella/Natalya/Ruby Riott/Sarah Logan/Liv Morgan/Naomi/Lana/Tamina

    - Best wishes to former Impact President Jeff Jarrett as he was released from rehab last Friday and was home with his family for the holidays.

    - Chelsea Green a.k.a. Knockouts Champion Laurel Van Ness has NOT been given her release from Impact and according to sources, unless she is given it, she will be under contract until June 2018.

    - Eddie Edwards lost NOAH’s GHC Heavyweight Title last week to Kenou in what was said to be an excellent match. I do not know if they plan on airing it on Impact as they have aired one of Edwards’ title defenses in the past but since the match quality was so good, I would air it if I was in their shoes.

    - Impact has let go of Bob Rosen who ran their ring crew and was the transportation for rings and equipment for shows and events.

Ring of Honor / Lucha Underground / Independent / International News and Notes:

    - Despite being a big success on the independent and Japan for the past year, Cody Rhodes noted to a fan that he has no interest in returning to WWE at this time and plans on having a huge 2018 independently of WWE.

    - The Young Bucks have formed their own corporation for their merchandise. The parent company of their merchandise is called “Killing the Business” and they have filed trademarks for the term as well as “Being the Elite”.

    - The Kingdom has signed with ROH and will be exclusive to them full time now.

    - AXS is running a “marathon” of the Okada/Omega matches tonight starting at 8:00 pm. All three matches in their series will air twice in a row on consecutive airings. So they will air the trilogy in its entirety back to back to back and then they will repeat the airing. That’s 6 hours of Okada vs. Omega. Make sure you watch it. Excellent.

    - Katsuya Kitamura won the New Japan Lion’s Cup tournament and is expected to get a major push in 2018.

    - Congrats to Florida independent wrestler MIKE PARROW for coming out of the closet as a homosexual and announcing his engagement. Parrow is a student of Bubba Ray and Devon’s 3D Wrestling Academy. He is an imposing 6’4, 330 lb. man.

    - Much of Puerto Rico is STILL without power and Carlos Colon’s World Wrestling Council has still not run a show since before the hurricane in October. That’s a shame.

    - In a smart business decision, Tommy Dreamer’s “House of Hardcore” promotion is running the Thursday before the Royal Rumble at the 2300 Arena which is formerly the ECW Arena. The booking of the show will revolve around a tournament to crown the first TV title.

NEW JAPAN PRO WRESTLING’S WRESTLE KINGDOM 12 is on Thursday, January 4th, 2018 from Tokyo Japan and the line-up is as follows:

  • IWGP WORLD TITLE: Kazuchika Okada © vs. Tetsuya Naito
  • IWGP INTERCONTINENAL TITLE: Hiroshi Tanahashi © vs. Switchblade Jay White)
  • IWGP UNITED STATES TITLE: “The Cleaner” Kenny Omega © vs. “Lionheart” Chris Jericho
  • ROH WORLD TITLE: Cody © (Should he still be champion) vs. Kota Ibushi
  • IWGP JUNIOR TITLE: Marty Scurll © vs. Will Ospreay vs. KUSHIDA vs. Hiromu Takahashi
  • IWGP TAG TEAM TITLES: Lance Archer & Davey Boy Smith Jr. © vs. Evil & Sanada
  • NEVER TITLE: Minoru Suzuki © vs. Hiroki Goto IF GOTO LOSES, HE LOSES HIS HAIR
  • IWGP JUNIOR TAG TEAM TITLES: Roppongi 3K (Sho & Yoh) © vs. The Young Bucks (Matt & Nick Jackson)
  • MMA News and Notes:

    - So essentially at UFC 219 tomorrow we will have what is probably the most interesting Women’s UFC fight since Ronda Rousey’s return as Cris “Cyborg” Justino defends her UFC Women’s Featherweight title against Holly Holm. Holm always has a punchers chance as she does hit hard and is skilled in striking, more skilled than Cyborg is in striking. The problem is, Cyborg is so much more physically bigger and strong than everyone on the roster including Holm that it will be tough for Holm to mount any sort of offense.

    - Cyborg noted that her weight cut has been easier this time around as she was walking around at 170 lbs. when in previous fights she was around 185. So her cut down to 145 has been easier.

    - Jon Lineker was forced to pull out of his fight against Jimmie Rivera tomorrow night due to a severe tooth infection that in fact was so bad, it required surgery. That sucks as it was one of the most promising fights on the show from an action perspective. UFC has been trying to find a replacement opponent for Rivera but it doesn’t look like they will find someone on such short notice and promoted Dan Hooker vs. Marc Diakiese to the main show.

    - Really sucks for Rivera since he cancelled his honeymoon to take this fight.

    - UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Daniel Cormier is teasing retirement as he turns 40 in 15 months and doesn’t know how much left he has in the tank.

    - UFC and Reebok have renegotiated their terms and increased fighter compensation for sponsorship money issued by Reebok.

    - Being a successful athlete is always a wonderful thing when you can repay stuff back. Congrats to UFC Welterweight Champion Tyrone Woodley as he purchased his mother a house for Christmas. Stories like that are always fantastic to read about.

    - Despite rumors to the contrary, UFC President Dana White confirmed that if he were to come back from his health scare and fight again, George St. Pierre will NOT be matched up against Conor McGregor due to having both Robert Whitaker and Tyrone Woodley waiting for fights with him. White noted he doesn’t think GSP is coming back anyway but if he does, it is not for Conor. The only thing I can think of is that White is just saying that to not piss people off that GSP will be getting a super fight. GSP vs. Conor makes the most sense financially and will easily be the biggest drawing fight in UFC HISTORY. The fight will draw 2 million PPV buys and make all sorts of record numbers via ticket sales. It would be stupid not to try and sign that. It would be throwing away free money. Mind you, I am saying that from a business perspective because it isn’t a fight that I would want to see since GSP is way too big for Conor and his wrestling game would kill Conor.

    - The final buy rate for Bisping vs. St. Pierre looks to be 875,000. While a respectable number for UFC this year, they had to be disappointed that it didn’t draw 1,000,000 for GSP’s return. It was the biggest drawing UFC PPV of 2017 surpassing Daniel Cormier vs. Jon Jones 860,000 buys.

    - Dana White met with members of Floyd Mayweather’s team yesterday in Las Vegas. So despite Floyd’s claim that he doesn’t plan on fighting in MMA, there is still discussions ongoing.

    - Longtime UFC fighter Nate Marquardt announced that he is retiring from MMA. He is done. He does plan on continuing to train MMA fighters as well as in Jiu Jitsu.

    - Stefan Struve vs. Andre Arlovski has been the first fight signed for the UFC show on March 3, 2018 in Las Vegas.

    - Chael Sonnen revealed that the chances of Chuck Liddell coming back to fighting are dead. Sonnen had been working to get him into Bellator and get a fight with him but he has since learned that Liddell is not coming back.

    - Longtime Bellator color commentator Jimmy Smith did not have his contract renewed and is done with Bellator. UFC has shown interest and talks are expected. Bellator will likely replace Smith with Chael Sonnen or Frank Mir who are both under contract as fighters and have done color commentary for UFC.

    - Rizin has a show scheduled on New Year’s Eve in Japan that was scheduled to feature a Gabi Garcia fight. For those who do not know, Garcia is a HUGE muscular woman that makes Cris “Cyborg” Justino look like a lightweight. She was scheduled to fight former women’s pro wrestler Shinobu Kandori who is aged 53. The fight was scheduled to take place at 209lbs. I do not think the fight is taking place as Garcia weighed in at 235.8 lbs.

UFC 219 is TOMORROW NIGHT from Las Vegas Nevada and the line-up is as follows:

  • UFC WOMEN’S FEATHERWEIGHT TITLE: Cris “Cyborg” Justino © vs. Holly Holm
  • Edson Barboza vs. Khabib Nurmagomedov
  • Dan Hooker vs. Marc Diakiese
  • Cynthia Cavillo vs. Carla Esparza
  • Carlos Condit vs. Neil Magny
  • UFC 220 is on Saturday, January 20th, 2018 from Boston Massachusetts and the line-up is as follows:

  • UFC HEAVYWEIGHT TITLE: Stipe Miocic © vs. Francis Ngannou
  • UFC LIGHTHEAVYWEIGHT TITLE: Daniel Cormier © vs. Volkhan Oezdemir
  • UFC ON FOX is on Saturday, January 27th, 2018 from Charlotte North Carolina and the line-up is as follows:

  • Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza vs. Derek Brunson
  • Ovince St. Pruex vs. Ilir Latifi
  • UFC 221 is on Saturday, February 11th, 2018 from Perth Australia and the line-up is as follows:

  • UFC MIDDLEWEIGHT TITLE: Robert Whitaker © vs. Luke Rockhold
  • Mark Hunt vs. Curtis Blaydes

    - THIS LINK is for LIFE. Thank you soldiers. WELCOME HOME BLOG.

    - BONUS Random ARTICLE of the week: I am still not sure how I feel about this. On one hand, I get it. I totally understand the need for boosted security in the wake of the Las Vegas shootings and not wanting to have that happen on a Disney property. On the other hand though, sometimes people want privacy. I feel while once a day visits can help avoid mass casualties like Vegas, if someone doesn’t want to be bothered for 24 hours while on vacation, they kind of deserve to be left alone.

    - BONUS Random ARTICLE of the week PART 1: Such a dick move to do, I don’t care if they are kids or teens or what, this is HORRIBLE. PS. I am all for trying them as adults.

    - BONUS Random ARTICLE of the week PART 2: This story is chilling. I need to know the motive for this senseless act of violence because it is crushing me that he was signing with his son of facebook and then 90 minutes later murdering his son, infant daughter and estranged wife for no rhyme or reason.

    - BONUS Random ARTICLE of the week PART 3: New York City Police Officers sometimes get a bad rap and are treated unfairly for things beyond their control or how they handle a situation. But then you get stories like these that completely f*ck up their reputation. God damn this is terrible all because they were too f*cking lazy to get out of the car. This probably would have been avoided.

    - BONUS Random ARTICLE of the week PART 5: Terrible tragedy here in the Bronx last night as the worst fire in 25 years killed a dozen and injured a lot of others in the Bronx.

    - Due to Star Wars: The Last Jedi’s Christmas holiday haul at the box office, Disney Studios has made a whopping $6 BILLION worldwide for 2017. This makes Disney the only studio in movie history to gross more than $6 billion in consecutive years with them making $7.6 billion in 2016. WOW.

    - The Last Jedi is also expected to surpass $500 million in the U.S. this weekend thus becoming the highest grossing film of 2017 surpassing Disney’s “Beauty and the Beast”.

    - Last Friday was the best episode of Agents of Shield this season. Simply fantastic storytelling on Fitz and his whereabouts compared to the rest of the team. Well done stuff. I really wish there was an episode tonight and that I didn’t have to wait a week for the next chapter.

    - The downside to the above Shield news however is the episode drew the lowest ratings of the show….EVER. Friday’s are killer for television and why ABC decided to move it to the death slot following the best season of the show creatively is beyond me.

    - Fox’s “The Gifted”, anyone watching? I am WAY behind. Like 8 episodes. I liked the show but have just been boggled with other shows/watching habits. They are all on my DVR. Do I need to binge watch ASAP or can this show wait a few weeks/months before I catch up?

    - I haven’t sat down to watch yet but I heard that Netflix’s “Bright” starring Will Smith is absolutely f*cking terrible. Can anyone confirm? I am still going to give it a shot nonetheless, I just want to prepare myself just in case.

    - SyFy announced that March 21st will be the debut of their “Krypton” series. This is so STUPID. Has to be on par with how stupid “Gotham” is.
