T.G.I.F. with Matt Dawgs: #184

Good day to you all and welcome to We Want Insanity. I am your host for today, Matt Dawgs and this is my column. Today is the end of the work week and the time to look back at all the goings-on over the past seven days as I wrap it up with a bow and spout it out bit by bit. Buckle up. Let's go...

MATT NOTE #2: My new DAILY BLOG titled "Where My Dawgs At?"

- As of next Tuesday, CM Punk will only trail Bruno Sammartino, Bob Backlund, Pedro Morales and Hulk Hogan for the longest title reigns in WWE history. That is an amazing feat considering the way the business has changed over the years. Suffice to say, it is likely that no one will ever surpass Punk on this list as well. Punk will be the longest reigning WWE Champion of the last 25 years.

- So WWE holds off on Dolph Ziggler cashing in the Money in the Bank briefcase because they had to postpone their planned feud with him vs. John Cena before he won the title. Cena is then “injured” last week on RAW to A) protect him when he loses since it would appear that he lost while wrestling at less than 100% or B) have him overcome the odds at TLC to win with an injured knee. So why in the world would WWE put them in a normal match on television to build to their ladder match on PPV and their idea of good booking is to have John Cena win….CLEANLY? Um….not a good thing for Ziggler. He didn’t even get his heat back following the match.

- Who on the entire WWE roster is more underrated than Dolph Ziggler? I do not remember the last time he had a bad match. His match with Cena on RAW was fantastic.

- Ryback’s promo was finally what it should have been as opposed to last week where it was full of lame “food” puns that were forced.

- Surprising that Titus O’Neal was given so much offense vs. Ryback on Monday. WWE absolutely LOVED his commentary which is great for him because no way does WWE let him get off as much as he did two months ago. That being said, it is definitely not a good sign for Darren Young and his future because if they break O’Neal away from him which I expect them to do sooner rather than later, then Young will be on his last legs.

- The Shield? It is a horrible name. Ambrose is MONEY though. Rollins also was decent on the mic which is surprising because he normally isn’t. They have a nice little package with Ambrose being the promo guy (and is a good worker), Rollins being the workhorse (after Daniel Bryan, CM Punk and Randy Orton, he is probably the best worker in the company) and Roman Reigns being the muscle, they have a good group.

- If you felt like I did on Monday that RAW went much smoother and was an overall better show, it is because it was. Vince McMahon was not backstage as he was overseas visiting the troops for the Tribute to the Troops taping. The entire show was overseen by HHH and it is said that there was very little re-writes to the script. The problem with this is that the rating was abysmal. Lower than it has been in recent weeks. Many backstage feel that Vince is going to blame the rating being low on his not being there and thus will be worse next week when he is running things again.

- WWE is locally advertising the Rock in markets for RAW following the Royal Rumble PPV. So essentially he is supposed to be on RAW weekly between the Rumble and Wrestlemania.

- I have resigned myself to the fact that WWE is NEVER going to build a never before seen match as something special. If two wrestlers have never faced, they aren’t going to build it to a PPV. Instead it will just be on RAW. With that being said, Daniel Bryan vs. Rey Mysterio on RAW should have been more than a 5 minute match. If they aren’t going to push it as something big, at least give them time. RAW is 3 hours. There is time to allocate to something like this.

- Anyone know who in the blue hell would Rey Mysterio jump off the apron and land on his feet? The man has had 800 knee surgeries. That is the LAST thing anyone with knee problems should do. WTF?

- FYI…the Twitter poll between Daniel Bryan and Kane over who would face CM Punk in the main event was 100% rigged.

- The Cody Rhodes injuries are far more serious than anticipated. While it looks like he will not need surgery, he isn’t expected back until January at the earliest but likely later. WOW.

- Miz doesn’t get “IT”. On Smackdown last week, he was the most unbearable person I have ever seen in wrestling. Completely NOT how a babyface should act. He is worse and more unlikable as a babyface then he was as a heel. He needs to watch some tapes, study and practice being a babyface and change his promo style and mannerisms if he expects this face run to get over.

- For the record, and I said this WEEKS ago, wins and losses matter in wrestling contrary to what WWE has conditioned fans to believe. The Hell in the Cell buyrate is back and it drew 200,000 PPV buys which is about 30,000 more than last year. The show did NOT have John Cena on it in any fashion and the main event was CM Punk defending vs. the undefeated Ryback. Ryback being undefeated drew. It caused fans to want to see HITC to see if Punk’s year long title reign ended or if Ryback’s streak would end. Problem is, WWE continues with their painting themselves into a corner stuff as far as it comes to him because now that he lost at HITC, WWE has to keep him in the title picture since he lost controversially and by doing so, they continue to have him fail which causes him to lose his luster. He lost at Survivor Series (well Cena took the pin) so he didn’t get his revenge on Punk and is now going to lose at TLC. That is 3 consecutive PPV’s of FAILURE. Not a good way to build someone up.

- As of RAW this week, the writing team was told to prepare for the Undertaker to wrestle at Wrestlemania and were 90% positive it will be vs. CM Punk. Whether the title will be involved or not has still not been decided on but Punk vs. Taker is a go.

- According to DAVE MELTZER , they are also teasing Ryback vs. Big Show for Mania with the idea that Ryback getting Big Show up for the “Shell Shock” and marching around the ring with him would be a “Wrestlemania Moment” to be remembered.

- There was a major incident backstage at Smackdown this week when the fire alarm system went off causing the sprinkler system to go off flooding the locker room area with water. Several WWE Superstars luggage was damaged as well as some WWE production equipment. It is believed that the heat coming from backstage lighting caused the alarm to go off. WWE was thankful however that the entire arena’s system did not go off as the event would have had to be evacuated and the taping had already begin as WWE was finished recording “The Main Event” and were setting up to begin with Smackdown.

- Not one person backstage has any idea of when a WWE Network is set to launch. WWE Management is now in “Wrestlemania” mode and building to that without focusing on a Network launch.

- JBL launches "THE JBL SHOW" today on WWE.COM with Michael Cole as his co-host. No idea what the concept is other than he will have John Cena as his guest. My assumption is that it will be a sit down style interview show from week to week.

- It is a virtual LOCK that Wrestlemania 31 will be held in Cowboy’s Stadium in Texas. Both WWE and the Dallas Cowboys wanted Mania to come to the Stadium before that but other scheduling conflicts prevented it. The year the Stadium opened, Mania was already set and the subsequent years (last year and this year) has the NCAA tournament booked in the Stadium on Mania weekend.

- Mick Foley has pretty much confirmed via Twitter that he is retired. He does not have a match left to give in his body and said that all of his injuries have caught up with him. For example, if he was going to wrestle again, then the Survivor Series 10 man tag earlier this month was the perfect opportunity for him considering he could have been hidden and protected. Since he wasn’t even able to do that, it is unlikely he will ever be able to wrestle again.

- R.I.P. for former Fabulous Freebird Buddy Roberts who passed away yesterday at age 65.

- Why and I now just seeing THIS for the first time? You guys are slacking at keeping me up to date.

- Former WWE Diva and current girlfriend of New York Yankee Alex Rodriquez, TORRIE WILSON at the beach.

- Kevin Nash will be at the NXT tapings next week at Full Sail University in an on camera role.

- Kenneth Cameron of the Acension tag team with Connor O'Brien in NXT was arrested last week in St. Petersburg Florida for battery of a law enforcement officer and drunken disorderly conduct. He was promptly released from his developmental contract following his arrest. It was his second arrest as he was picked up in January 2011 for a DUI in Tampa. Cameron (real name: Thomas Latimer) as part of the Acension tag team was a standout in the developmental system and the Acension was recently being discussed as being brought up to the main roster. Safe to say that it now out the window. When the Acension started, it was a stable consisting of Cameron & O'Brien along with Ricardo Rodriquez, Tito (now Epico) Colon and Raquel Diaz (Shaul Guerrero).

- Just a week and a half after almost KILLING former WWE Star Matt Hardy at the “Extreme Rising” iPPV, Luke Hawx received a WWE Tryout this week before RAW and appeared on RAW as one of the security guards who confronted Ryback. Does anything think that was coincidence? Like maybe WWE is so full of hate when it comes to Matt Hardy that they almost rewarded the man who came close to ending his career or his life?

- The above blurb was just a joke by the way. Reason being is because, and as always with Matt Hardy, take with a grain of salt, Hardy was asked on an interview this week if he and Jeff would be back for a Hardy Boyz reunion in WWE in 2013 and Matt replied, “That is a very strong possibility”. Of course Hardy has a long history of working and using the net for his advantage but…you have to consider it as Jeff’s contract with TNA is up in early 2013.

- Ring of Honor star “The Prodigy” Mike Bennett (former WWE Diva Maria Kanellis’ fiancée) met with WWE officials in Stanford CT last week.

- Former Tough Enough Season 1 winner Maven Huffman was a victim….of STORAGE WARS !!!

- Independent wrestler Leah Von Dutch discusses WWE Hall of Famer Edge paying for her wrestling training and how much both Edge and Beth Phoenix have helped her progress.

- Former WCW/WWE Star “The Total Package” Lex Luger is working on an AUTOBIOGRAPHY .

- Former WWE Star Shad Gaspard’s new documentary titled “ BEAST MODE ”.

- Episode 93 of " Z! True Long Island Story ".

- Episode 94 of " Z! True Long Island Story".

WWE TLC PPV is on Sunday, December 16th from Brooklyn New York and the line-up is as follows:

  • WWE TITLE: CM Punk © w/ Paul Heyman vs. Ryback in a TABLES, LADDERS & CHAIRS MATCH.
  • WORLD TITLE: The Big Show © vs. Sheamus in a CHAIRS MATCH.
  • INTERCONTINENTAL TITLE: Kofi Kingston © vs. Wade Barrett

- It is confirmed that Wes Brisco will be revealed to be a member of Aces & Eights. TNA management is high on his wrestling ability and an expected feud with Kurt Angle is certainly going to fast track him.

- A Kenny King sighting on Impact!?!?!?!! HAHAHA. How did quitting ROH turn out for him? For those who missed Impact, King was one of the three being considered for a shot at Rob Van Dam's X-Division title last night. He was in one backstage segment with Hulk Hogan to which Hogan promptly eliminated him first from possibly competing for the title. The reason Hogan gave for eliminating him? Because he hasn't done anything noteworthy lately. LOL. No sh*t Hulk. That is what happens when you aren't used in months. HAHAHA.

- Christopher Daniels and Kazarian now have an official tag team name as they are going by the label "Bad Influence". I like the fact that teams are now starting to get into names. I just wish WWE wouldn't give teams lame names like they do. "Air Boom"? Really?

- Velvet Sky will be returning to TNA as she has inked a new contract with the company. There is no word on her return date yet but Dixie Carter pushed for Sky’s re-signing as she was upset about her departure.

- TNA announced last night on Impact that 2013 Lockdown will be held in San Antonio Texas in MARCH instead of April as usual. This is a sign that TNA is going to cut the amount of PPV's they hold as it has been discussed internally for a long time now. This is a good thing for TNA as they have a longer time to build for PPV matches and can get better long term storyline planning done. The plan as of now is to hold a January PPV and then Lockdown in March this skipping a February PPV. They are going to ease into the less PPV schedule to "test the waters" but the goal is to bring it down to 6 per year instead of 12.

- Huk Hogan was named #1 on GQ's LEAST influential people list for 2012. AMAZING!!

- TNA front office worker Bob Ryder has been medically cleared to return to work. Ryder has been out several months battling cancer.

- The hearing scheduled for today between Scott Steiner and TNA wrestling was cancelled with no reason or reschedule date given. This leads me to believe that both sides are working out a financial settlement.

Independent / International News and Notes:

- Ring of Honor announced on Wednesday that Jim Cornette has taken a sabbatical from the promotion with no return date given. He apparently had a meltdown at the last set of television tapings in Pennsylvania and has been out of contact with everyone in the promotion ever since. Sources within ROH are saying that he is suffering from burnout from wrestling overall and that they would be surprised if he came back to ROH. He was NOT expected to be backstage at “Final Battle” and ROH Booker Hunter “Delirious” Johnson will handle the production of the show as well as the booking.

- For those who didn’t know, ROH manager “Brutal” Bob Evans (manager of Mike Bennett) is not only a manager but he wrestles on independents as well. Well this week Bob went through “Iron Week” this week where he wrestled in 60 minute Iron Man matches all week long. WOW.

- A special holiday offer from MARK BRISCOE .

- Congratulations to Ring of Honor’s “The Prodigy” Mike Bennett as it has been a MAJOR week for him. He met with WWE officials last week in Connecticut and this week he announced that he and longtime girlfriend Maria Kanellis are engaged to be married.

- MTV will be taping at the Pro Wresting Syndicate show and their “sister promotion” called Bombshell Ladies Of Wrestling or B.L.O.W. for short as one of the women on the roster, “Miss Adiva” is currently being filmed for the MTV show “True Life”. The line-up for the show is below:

  • Veda Scott vs. Sumie Sakai
  • Marti Belle vs. Missi Sampson
  • Annie Social vs. Christina Von Eerie

MMA News and Notes

- UFC has a lot of thinking and planning to go over during the next few months as we start off the New Year. Dana White has been 100% all in when it comes to the mega “Super Fights” that will absolutely set all types of UFC/MMA records when it comes to gates and PPV buy rates. The problem is, his plans are going to take two of the company’s most popular divisions and grind them to a screeching halt. As of today, Dana White is still set on going with UFC Middleweight Champion Anderson “Spider” Silva vs. UFC Welterweight Champion George St. Pierre in May at either Cowboy’s Stadium in Dallas (Seats 100,000 for football) or a soccer stadium in Brazil (up to 100,000 for soccer). Between the gate for this fight and the PPV buys, this will absolutely be the most lucrative UFC in history. Here are where the problems come in. Anderson Silva says May is too soon for a fight. He needs more time. If the fight does not take place in May and you add in the fact that following the fight, win or lose, Silva normally has a long time frame between fights, it will be OVER A YEAR in between Anderson Silva defending the middleweight title. GSP has not even discussed the fight with White yet because he is taking some time after his win over Carlos Condit a few weeks back which was his first fight in 18 months since suffering a serious knee injury. He has told reporters however that he has a lot to do at 170 lbs because there are a lot of challengers for him and if he takes the Silva fight and has to gain weight to fight at a catch weight, it is because he would have done all there is to accomplish at 170 and he won’t plan on going back down to it once he is done vs. Silva. The other obvious problem is that if (when in my eyes) Silva beats GSP, White is immediately going to want to go with Silva vs. UFC Light Heavyweight champion Jon “Bones” Jones in another “Super Fight” which will dwarf whatever money Silva/GSP makes. So…Silva will not have defended the Middleweight title for 18 months or longer by the time that fight materializes. You have a load of talent at middle weight that all want an opportunity to beat Silva or at least wear his title which are things that Dana White has to consider before making all of this come true.

- Michael Bisping has proposed a solution to the above mentioned title. Make his impending fight vs. Vitor Belfort for the middle weight title. Not an interim mind you, but for the real title. Bisping feels that once Silva gets paid his “Super Fight” paycheck, he is done with the middleweight division. Bisping added the caveat that should Silva decide one day that he does in fact want to come back to middleweight, he should automatically get the first title shot super ceding any number one contender that may be around at the time.

- Early estimates for UFC 154 (GSP vs. Condit) are coming in and it is expected the show will fall at around 700,000 buys. That is good but not as high as expected considering it was GSP’s (UFC’s top drawing card) first fight in 18 months.

- Fox Sports management is working hard to convince UFC to have their annual Super Bowl weekend show in 2014 (NEXT YEAR, not this upcoming year) to take place in New Jersey since Met Life Stadium will be hosting this years Super Bowl and then they can show it Saturday night on FOX (which also has the rights to air the Superbowl game itself).

- In the “More things change, the more they stay the same” category, the last Strikeforce show EVER is now out of TWO of their THREE main events. Both Gilbert Melendez and Luke Rockhold are off the show due to injuries.

- Dana White has reached out individually to everyone fighting on next weekend’s Fox show to ask that they tone it down in training the last two weeks to keep them from being injured. Not that it mattered since Lavar Johnson announced last night that he is injured and is out of the UFC on Fox 5 show with an injury leaving Brendan Schaub without an opponent for the show. So sadly for Schaub, he is now off the show too.

- Undefeated MMA star and former Olympic Gold Medalist Sara McMann says that she is not signed with UFC but she expects to once Strikeforce folds said in an interview earlier this week that while she thinks she can compete with Ronda Rousey if they were to fight, sooner rather than later isn’t the right timing. She said that a fight between the two would be great but she needs a bigger following before that can happen. Everyone knows Rousey and to properly promote it, they would need to know her too.

- I think I may have found my NEXT WIFE .

- In hyping the upcoming season of The Ultimate Fighter with Jon Jones and Chael Sonnen as coaches, both men revealed that they have previous experience with TUF. Sonnen revealed that he was considered to be a contestant on season 1 of TUF in 005 (with Chuck Liddell and Randy Couture as coaches) but turned it down because he didn’t know what the season would entail. Sonnen noted that after watching the very 1st episode of the show, he immediately regretted his decision because he knew he made a bad one. That season brought us such UFC fighters as Forrest Griffin, Stephan Bonnar, Josh Koscheck and Chris Leben. Jon Jones experience was different because he actually tried out for the show and was cut from it by Dana White himself. White said the reason he cut Jones was because Jones was 20 years old at the time and everyone needed to be 21 to make the show (due to alcohol being in the house). He let Jones roll around with the guys who participated but he officially couldn’t let him try out. It turned out better for him in the long run anyway.

- For people wondering why fighters take fights on short notice, ask Fabio Maldonado. Maldonado took a fight at UFC 153 vs. Glover Teixeira on short notice. He was brutally beaten for his trouble and it his 3rd consecutive loss in UFC which normally means you get cut. But not only did White NOT cut him from the promotion, Maldonado revealed that he received his UFC pay day in the mail last week and it was for more money than he negotiated for and actually more money than he would have gotten had he won the fight. That was Dana looking out for someone who came in unprepared and was beaten unmercifully for it.

- UFC Featherweight Champion Jose Aldo is considering moving up to Lightweight following his fight in February with Frankie Edgar.

- UFC Middleweight Chris Weidman, who was in the mix for an upcoming UFC Middleweight title bout should Anderson Silva stick around, is now OUT of the mix as he is set to go under the knife this week to correct a shoulder injury and will be on the shelf for about 6 - 9 months or more. A tough break for him as he was stringing together some impressive wins lately.

- Chris Escobedo. Remember that name because it could become a very significant one in the future. Not because he is going to make a mark in MMA or is the next big thing or anything. He isn’t. He isn’t even a fighter. He is a tattoo artist. The reason his name may be a big deal is because he filed a lawsuit vs. video game maker THQ citing the fact that they used his tattoos on Carlos Condit in the UFC Undisputed 3 video game. If his case wins, that would open up a lot of doors EVERYWHERE for video game makers to be sued by tattoo artists for including their work in games without consent. That would be a hell of a lot of lawsuits.

- Bellator has smartened up and amended their rules. If a champion loses his title and calls for a rematch after the loss, then that fight will likely be signed as opposed to the fighter having to earn a shot through a tournament. That was one of the MAJOR turn offs I had with Bellator. This is good news.
