A Quiet Place: Hardly Horror

By Rafael Perez (Strange Planet NYC) Apr 14, 2018 - 2:13 PM print

When it comes to today’s standards of horror and sci fi films, the greatest element that seems to compromise the integrity of many films is the vain attempt to answer every question the movie tends to raise as we are watching it. When it doesn’t become answered that’s when the sequels come in. When the answers are given we are still left unsatisfied. The film is compromised. People say it sucks. Horror is not horror anymore.

But not this movie…not A Quiet Place.

There was no need for it. I’m sure the internet will be buzzing with questions and theories regarding the origin of the creatures we see in the movie. It’s a given. And that’s okay. Such speculations have their place in pop culture. I will insist that such speculations have no place in A Quiet Place.

This is a story about a family’s survival. That’s it. On top of that it is delivered so well the theater was as quiet as their moments in the movie. A Quiet Place is about a family who is surviving an apocalypse of sorts. Creatures have taken over the earth and the only humans who are left are the one that know better than to make a peep. These creatures lack eyesight. What they lack in sight they excel at in hearing. The family in the film have an advantage that they are familiar with sign language and they use that to communicate. Their daughter, played by Milicent Simmonds, is deaf and the family uses that to their advantage in trying to survive the monsters who would come and tear them apart if a sound is made. This girl is an amazing actress and she is actually deaf in real life. There is a great advantage in taking an effect such as a hearing impairment and be able to use that to tell a story….and tell a story it did.

We don’t see how these creatures showed up. I caught a glimpse of a newspaper article among others on the wall which showed a photo of meteors hitting the earth. My guess is that that’s where the creatures emerged from. They don’t seem to possess any intelligence much less any kind of advanced tech over the humans. That’s all we know about them. They came from someplace, they are blind, they have superior hearing and they will kill you if you make a sound. That goes for the animals too. They look menacing and hostile and strangely primitive.

That’s the reason why the movie doesn’t go in deep about them….it would have deviated from the actual point of the movie. Survival. Strategy. Family. Love. Forgiveness. Events play out early in the film where Regan (the daughter) and her dad, played by John Krasinski are challenged early to view themselves and each other for understanding and forgiveness during this dark time.

The mother and wife Evelyn, (Played by Emily Blunt) plays an incredible role in the way things play out to survive. Smart and strong, she deals with the situations played out in the story the way a survivor would, and we all in the theater wondered if we could have been able to do what she does in this movie to survive.

The son Marcus (played by Noah Jupe), is younger. His concerns and fears are clear. His convictions and determination later become clearer.

If you want to see a horror movie with blood and gore and jump scares scattered throughout the film, don’t see A Quiet Place. If you want to see what it’s like to survive under the worst possible circumstances….and true human history has had its share of the darkness we all must face from time to time…Watch A Quiet Place. It is a unique and intense story with a great payoff and contentment that no matter what...the human condition was created for survival. And survive we all will.

Shhhhhhh…
