The Review - Avengers: Infinity War

By Rafael Perez (Strange Planet NYC) May 1, 2018 - 8:20 AM print

Caution…Spoilers Ahead. Many, many, spoilers ahead…

When we see heroes face their most darkest hour in the midst of toil and horror, we feel for them more. We root for them more. We want them to win more. The point of conflict in any story gives us the anxious flux of what would be, what could be, and what could have been.

Such is the case of Marvel’s Infinity Wars which was released this past weekend. We see our heroes in two different scenarios where the odds are pretty much stacked against them. In spite of the rumors on the internet which has haunted us on the eventual fate of various Marvel Characters, the truth is finally out…we lost a lot of people. In one place we see Iron man, Spiderman, Dr Strange and the majority of the Guardians of the Galaxy get ready to fight on another planet of all things. On the other side the battle field is the plains of Wakonda, where Black Panther, Captain America, Black Widow and Bruce Banner gather for the fight of their lives. We also can’t forget Vision and the Scarlet Witch. Vision holds the last Infinity Stone, making him a target of Thanos.

We first saw Thanos, the main antagonist, in the post credit scene of the first Avengers film. We all lost our minds because we knew what was coming. It took a while but here we are. Thanos has obtained all of the infinity stones by hook or by crook, and we lost many of our heroes. I have to admit it’s hard to write about this because I’m still processing what I had just seen. It’s clear that some of our characters died, some of them survived and Thanos got what he wanted….a universe in balance as he watched the sunrise from his home. Only one post credit scene was shown. Nick Fury (Played by Samuel L. Jackson) trying call none other than Captain Marvel right before he himself disintegrated into dust. As I am familiar with Captain Marvel, that character has been the most elusive to me in my growing up on this stuff. Yet here we are. Trillions across the universe are dead.

But we know this is not the end. As a matter of fact, I’m quite convinced we will see our demised heroes again. I believe that the key to this return lies on two characters….Captain Marvel and Dr. Strange. Yes I know we saw Dr. Strange disappear as well, but we must remember who he is. He can manipulate space and time. His friend Wong is still alive from what we know and he too knows how to manipulate these things. We also Know that Antman, who was not in this film is still potentially around as well. Ant Man And Wasp scheduled for release this July, I was informed takes place before Infinity Wars so we will definitely have to wait a year for the next Avengers film to be released in May of 2019. In the meantime let the theories and rumors begin on the internet.

One thing I found to be a buzzkill; The beginning of the film. Apparently Thanos and his henchmen kill off what was left of Asgard after all the stuff we saw in Thor Ragnorok. I remember feeling like this with Alien 3 back in 1992. After everything that happened in Aliens (1986), we have Ripley, Newt and Hicks as the only survivors (Well, Bishop too). After all that they get killed off at the beginning of Alien 3, leaving Ripley and Bishop. Same thing here. What was the point of saving the remnant of Asgard only to have them eliminated in the beginning of the movie? I believe it was to show that Thanos is a force to be dealt with. We see it in the beginning of the film, and we see it in the end of the film. When the story line of a comic book series is translated to the big screen the way the Marvel Cinematic Universe was able was able do, us viewers are on hand to cheer, lament, be dumbstruck and hopeful of what is to come next. I definitely will.
