The Challenge: Champs vs. Pros - Episode 5

By James Bullock Jun 16, 2017 - 6:49 AM print

Previously on The Challenge: Instead of accepting Lindsey’s offer to take her on in The Arena, Lolo eliminated Tia before Wes bested Jordan and The Pros saw another player go home when CM Punk couldn’t solve a puzzle faster than teammate Gus.

To blow off some steam following the stressful Arena, the teams go virtual snowboarding where Louie just smashes the competition while Darrell does his best “old man out of his element” routine. Ready for war following the record-breaking showcase in the virtual world, Louie steps up with his team for the latest Team Challenge to do battle with “The Challenge” champs in “Over the Line” – a tug of war-like challenge where two teams of three trying to drag each other across the line of attrition on the other side of the field while clutching onto a ball. Unfortunately for the losing team captains, it’ll be a male & female elimination day. Wes & CT and Cara Maria & Camila want to lead their teams respectively before the decision is made for CT (Charity: Grayken Center for Addiction Medicine) and Cara (Charity: ASPCA) to take the figurative ball. On The Pros’ side, Lolo (Charity: Hurdles for Hope) and Louie (Charity: Wings for Life) take the leadership roles for what is an endurance-testing challenge.

The ladies are up first and even though Louise starts complaining about the harness choking her, The Pros push forward slowly but steadily to win the first heat in relative quick fashion.

The Champs’ guys decide to not anchor down like the girls and push forward when the whistle blows. Using the strategy that The Pros used to win the first heat, The Champs make a lot of ground when The Pros go for broke when trying to pull from one side instead of in a straight line. Unfortunately for The Pros, time works against them even when Kamerion starts rush lunging to inch his team forward and The Champs take the second heat. The tiebreaker pits the captains against each other: CT & Cara vs. Louie & Lolo. CT is able to keep the momentum for his team as Louie tries to keep Lolo close as she keeps losing her balance. CT is so overpowering that Lolo loses the ball in the process; but it makes no difference as The Champs pull off the victory to take the lead in the overall score.

As if this challenge wasn’t a twist enough, host Victor Cruz announces it’ll be Champs vs. Pros in the Elimination Round as well; meaning whoever The Champs vote to go into The Arena will take on Lolo & Louie instead of their own teammates. Cara Marie is in the hot seat and sends Ashley into The Arena yet again. Frustrated, Ashley storms off while threatening to quit the entire show. CT doesn’t have to decide as Wes volunteers himself.

Kamerion and Wes have a heart-to-heart conversation about Kamerion’s growing up and why he helps underprivileged kids because of what happened in his life. But there’s no time for stories when the four elimination nominees enter The Arena where the players will have to crawl through a small steel cage while untangling a rope in hopes being the fastest. The guys are up first with Louie practically sprinting while untying the rope – leaving Wes to question why he’s even looking at his opponent. Louie makes it about halfway when Wes starts muscling the rope in & out. The two seem to be neck & neck when Louie goes in the wrong direction. Once again, Wes muscles the rope out of the cage for the victory.

The rain that started coming down during the first half of this game is pouring by the time the girls enter The Arena. It doesn’t take long before the rope’s weight starts working against both women, though Lolo’s strength advantage allows her to push forward a little faster than Ashley. Though Ashley continues to move, it’s Lolo’s strength that proves to be the difference in the end.

Understandably frustrated, Ashley leaves The Arena without saying a word. Lolo’s body shuts down to the point she needs oxygen to get ready for the closing ceremony. The producers convince Ashley to come back and accept the $1000 for her charity (Facing Addiction) alongside Louie. Upset over how everything played out, Lolo tells Ashley she’ll donate $5000 of her own money to Facing Addiction to send Ashley home with $6000 for her charity. While the Elimination Round ends on something of a high note, Victor Cruz reminds the remaining competitors that the end is near and it only gets tougher from here.

Episode High(s): Heart of champions. What an episode! This was an episode full of heart & grit that saw everyone literally & figuratively pulling their weight in grand fashion. The Team Challenge, The Arena battles, Ashley being forced to defend her crown yet again, Lolo’s post-Elimination Round decision were just so captivating and made this the most memorable episode thus far.

Episode Low(s): Ashley taking the fall. When she first started doing “The Challenge”, Ashley was pretty much a joke who didn’t show anything of what was to come in her future successes in this series. So it’s sad to see someone like her work so hard, but not get her just rewards by making it to the finals. Ashley has definitely become a favorite to watch from here on out in “The Challenge”.

Captain’s Challenge Winners: CT & Cara Maria ($5000 respectively)

Team Challenge Winner: Champs (3-2)

Eliminations: Veronica (Episode 1); Candice (Episode 1); Shawne (Episode 2); Johnny Bananas (Episode 2); Ashley K (Episode 3); Tia (Episode 4); CM Punk (Episode 4); Ashley M (Episode 5); Louie (Episode 5)

Most Embarrassing Athletic Display: Darrell. And this week’s award in regards to embarrassment has nothing to do with what happened during the actual challenges, but during the cast’s downtime as Darrell refused to embrace his inner snowboarder. But at least he had a good reason: No point of getting injured trying to be better than an Olympian in a video game.

Competitor of the Week: CT. Boston strong and ready to win, CT used his dad bod to his advantage as “The Challenge” veteran not only stepped up as the co-captain, but really muscled his team to victory. With a mixture of grunts, clawing, and encouraging words to his teammates all the while having no circulation on the right side of his body thanks to the harness that almost immobilized several competitors.

Episode Summary in Five Words or Less: Tied down & choked up.
