The Challenge: Champs vs. Stars - Episode 7

By James Bullock Jan 4, 2018 - 8:50 AM print

Previously on The Challenge: Once again The Champs overcame the Team Challenge, yet an alliance shakeup on The Stars’ side caused Champ Aneesa to go home thanks to the grappling abilities & speed of Michelle Waterson in Cage match.

Michelle gets a chance to celebrate her victory by talking with her husband & daughter. Matt Rife, on the other hand, is an island to himself including to his own teammates. But they’ll have to work together to complete the underwater obstacle course that is “Sink or Swim”. This individual, head-to-head Challenge will see half of the competitors of each team going home while the competitors with the best times will automatically enter the finale. Up first is Zach from The Champs and Josh Murray of The Stars. The first phase sees Josh (and every other competitor) take a buoy through a series of barrels to hook it on the final one. Another buoy must be untied while underwater during the second phase. The third phase sees both having to swim through a netted block to free another buoy. The fourth stage has and over & under barricade sequence that must be swum through before unlocking a buoy while the fifth and final process features the competitors having to hook a kettlebell to a ring at the bottom of the pool. Josh does a marvelous job at the first four stages, only to be hindered by diving fourteen feet. But the lead is enough for Josh to win the heat and stop the time while Zach too struggles with diving far enough. Zach comes close to quitting, but finally pulls it off with the belief he’ll be dead last.

Bananas reps The Champs for heat two; taking on Justina Valentine. The race is pretty close at the beginning, but Valentine loses a lot of ground during the second phase. Bananas smokes the Challenge; with Justina steadily making it to the end and pulling off the fourteen-foot dive on her second try. Matt Rife of The Stars is left behind pretty early during the third heat while taking on Emily from The Champs. Emily makes the course look like child’s play while Matt struggles the entire time. Matt eventually finishes the course, feeling the same way as Zach did after his run. Tori from The Champs has a bad start by forgetting to hook her buoy on the first completed obstacle; having to play catch-up against Kim Glass from The Stars. Tori does a great job keeping a great pace and finishes strong while Kim, after having trouble completing the second phase, too makes up for lost ground.

The second phase of the next heat sees The Champs’ Wes get stuck in untying the buoy while competing against Michelle. Wes, after completing the second phase, goes into fish mode; smoking the last three phases with Michelle right behind him as she completes the last phase in one go.

It comes down to CT and Ariane Andrew for the final heat and CT doesn’t let his dad body hinder him from doing incredibly well by completing everything in one try in the fastest way possible. Ariane, on the other hand, doesn’t fly through the course, but is incredibly consistent until that final dive. Ariane gets the kettlebell hooked on her second try, but is it enough? Host The Miz announces the top male finisher from The Stars is Josh by ten minutes over Matt. The Champs’ top finisher is none other than Bananas with only a ten second time difference. When it comes to the ladies, Michelle gets that finale spot for the Stars while Emily, not surprisingly, got the best time for The Champs. Of course there’s a twist with the finalists being the people that pick who is going to get that last spot for their respective teams. Everyone pleads their case except for Ariane who admits she hasn’t helped her weight and Wes who tries to bribe his teammates with money and a pinned tweet.

When it comes down to deliberating who should get that final spot, Bananas & Emily are split over Zach & CT while Michelle & Josh see Justina & Kim being as viable as the other; with their decision coming down to a coin flip … that will be revealed on the next episode.

Episode High(s): Race in the Water. With this week’s Team Challenge not being made for team action at all made this episode one of the most intense as everyone was essentially competing with everyone and it made for an exciting & intense Challenge.

Episode Low(s): Cliffhanger. This is actually reaching, but I simply wanted an answer to who is going to the finale now. It’s not a huge low, just something to fill the space, lol!

MVP: N/A

Team Challenge Winner: N/A

Eliminations: Cory (Episode 1); Camila (Episode 1); Jenna (Episode 2); Terrell Owens (Episode 3); Ashley (Episode 3); Romeo Miller (Episode 4); Shawn Jordan (Episode 4); Riff Raff (Episode 5); Aneesa (Episode 6).

Most Embarrassing Athletic Display: Matt Rife. Two weeks in a row and the water has done Matt bad … really bad. Matt was forced to complete a Challenge he wasn’t made for and then embarrassed by having the worst overall time. Karma, maybe?

Competitor of the Week: Johnny Bananas. Arguably the greatest competitor in “The Challenge’s” illustrious existence has been outclassed as of late and is showing his age at times. Then he comes in and steps up like others wouldn’t have expected; especially considering this was Wes’ Challenge to win. After a rough showing in “Champs vs. Pros”, Bananas has truly avenged himself.

Episode Summary in Five Words or Less: Fortune at fourteen feet.
