The Challenge: Champs vs. Stars 3 - Episode 5

By James Bullock May 19, 2018 - 7:28 AM print

Previously on “The Challenge Champs vs. Stars”: The Blue Team turned things around by winning the Weekly Challenge, but it came at a cost as Aneesa got injured during the Challenge. This disillusionment connected to the Blue Team was made even worse by Louise using the Trade Power Play to take Ashley from the Red Team in favor of Tori.

The episode picks up right where the last left off with Ashley is still flipping out over being traded. While everyone including some of the Stars are trying to cool her down, Casper reminds Ashley of what she already knows: she’s a marked woman on the Blue Team. After the insanity is a little salsa dancing, Tony discussing proposal ideas for his girlfriend with Selita & Lil Mama, and Jozea trying to convince Devin saves him if either becomes the MVP. We’ll see if Jozea can live up to his own hype in today’s Weekly Challenge, “Jumbo Table Hockey”: a game that is exactly what it sounds like as the players can only move horizontally in their designated zones with the hope of earning the most goals in three periods. The game beings and Jozea is struggling; leading the clock to tick down while CT did his best to stop any goals against the Red Team. During the second heat period Shane actually breaks his stick while Casper continuously antagonizes Ashley while reminding her he won’t let her anywhere near a goal. When the third period starts, Shane starts yelling at Jozea to use his feet to prevent the puck from coming toward the Red Team’s goal. Jozea can’t figure out what to do as Tony takes the shot.

And with that comes another victory for the Blue Team and the discussion as to who should be this week’s MVP. They can’t deny Daniel’s ability to be the best goalie even though Tony is the person who scored the game-winning shot. On the Red Team side, Shane breaks Jozea down by stating he did nothing to really stop the puck. So Jozea tries to blame Devin for dropping the figurative ball as he didn’t follow some of the directions dictated to him. Jozea storms off with the belief that he’ll go into the Elimination Round. Wes tries to convince “Booby” to work with him while getting rid of Casper or Drake. Instead, the Blue Team including Tony decides it should be Wes going into the Elimination Round. When it’s time for the official nominations, the entire Red Team calls out Jozea for his terrible performance in the Weekly Challenge while Wes is told face-to-face that he needs to go in courtesy of the MVP. But Daniel has another decision to make as the Power Play allows for “Booby” to save Jozea and put any other male member on the Red Team side in his place. After a team meeting, Devin is chosen to replace the Jozea – a man who feels he knows what karma truly is and spells it out for the world to know:

“Popping Tags” is this week’s Elimination Round where the two competitors have to pull tags off their opponent’s body in this grappling contest. Devin actually pulls guard and gains a point.

Jumping like he wanted to headlock takedown Devin, Wes earns his first point.

Wes maintains the momentum, attaining another tag. Devin keeps his distance in the fourth round, popping a second tag. It’s down to a final tag a piece and Wes is able to pull it off in the end.

There’s no saving Devin this time and he’s left to go home, but Devin’s charity gets a little bit of change (Bregamos Community Theatre) for his tremendous effort to close the episode.

Episode High(s): The Stars Are Shining. For the first time in this spin-off’s history it seems the Champs are out of their element not because of a lack of talent or athleticism, but due to politicking & sheer chance. It makes the show so much better when it appears the Champs are pulling from behind and aren’t running the game in their usual manner.

Episode Low(s): Not Getting What You Have Coming. It’s always disappointing to see a strong team be unable to get rid of the albatross that’s weighing them down. For the Red Team, Jozea is that albatross and somehow he’s still in the game because of sheer circumstance. It would’ve been incredible to see how well Jozea would’ve succeeded against Wes in the Elimination Round. Also for shame to Casper for being a jerk to Ashley. Yes, Ashley acted a fool about the switch, but everyone either tried to calm her down or was civil in hopes of understanding that the Blue Team has their best interests at heart and wants her to win even if it’s false. Casper, on the other hand, just kept picking at her; potentially making Ashley turn even further instead of embracing her new position in the game.

MVP: Daniel ($2,550)

Team Challenge Winner: Blue Team (3-2)

Eliminations: Arian (Episode 1); Kam (Episode 2); Hennessy (Episode 3); Anessa (Episode 4); Devin (Episode 5)

Most Embarrassing Athletic Display: Jozea. It’s understandable to be lost in the moment and not know what to do in a game you’re unfamiliar with, but after an entire two periods Jozea couldn’t get his footing literally and essentially cost his entire team a game. To top it off, dude has the nerve to throw the blame on Devin for their failure when the puck went right past Jozea – not cool, dude, not cool.

Competitor of the Week: Daniel. You wanna win, put “Booby” in … the goal. Daniel really showed off this week, blocking shots left & right long enough for Tony to score. To top it off, Daniel was named the MVP and chose a winner for this week’s Elimination Round to potentially turn the tides on both teams in favor of the Stars.

Episode Summary in Five Words or Less: Shuffling with a cause.
