The Challenge: Dirty 30 - Episode 1

By James Bullock Jul 20, 2017 - 5:04 PM print

Since one of MTV’s greatest creations put together a group of individuals and made them batter one another for not only money, but also the enjoyment of viewers who always wondered who would win a fight between one jacked up guy that was chosen to live in a house with six strangers and another jacked up guy who road in a bus across the country in 1998, “The Challenge” has been a prime destination for entertainment unlike anything seen in reality TV – a budding genre when the show first aired. Now, thirty seasons later “The Challenge” gets down & dirty featuring thirty competitors unknowingly competing for the largest prize in “Challenge” history: one million dollars. This is “The Challenge: Dirty 30”.

Starting top row from left to right: CT, Ammo, Aneesa, Camila, Simone, Derrick K, Darrell, Johnny Bananas, Derrick H, Veronica, Cara Maria, Amanda, Jordan, Leroy, Nelson, Jemmye, Ashley M, Kailah, Britni, Cory, Tony, Devin, Marie, Latoya, Nicole, Tori, Shane, Dario, Hunter, Jenna

Rather than go straight to the house or meet up at some random place, the men & women of this thirtieth season of “The Challenge” are brought to what seems to be this season’s main battleground to meet host TJ Lavin as he tells everyone how nasty everything’s going to get as each competitor is fighting for themselves even when they’re on teams. Come to find out, “Challenge” vet CT has been held up at the border of Colombia due to passport issues and might not be able to compete.

Following the big opening speech, everyone gets a chance to enter their living quarters & mingle including one of the few couples in the house of Tori & Derrick H from the “Are You the One?” series. Brothers Shane & Tony (the latter being a “Real World” cast mate while his brother debuted on MTV via “The Challenge” series) return alongside the likes of veterans Johnny Bananas, Aneesa, Darrell, Veronica and even Derrick from “Road Rules’” thirteenth season. Of course there’s the womanizer Cory and all the ladies he’s loved & left are gunning for him early.

After the fraternizing they get the news that they have to compete tomorrow. For former “Challenge” champ Ashley M. this is terrible news since her luggage was lost during the flight. Cara Maria takes it upon herself to give Ashley some advice and Ashley decides to take her leave. Yep, someone just quit before the actual “Challenge” began.

The next day arrives and it’s announced that Ashley is not only gone from the show, CT still hasn’t made it to the city, and the bottom six players (three girls, three guys) of today’s challenge – “The Purge” – will be kicked off the show. To win this week’s event starts with a barrel roll featuring a barrel of gunpowder. The first three guys and girls to cross the finish line automatically stay and don’t have to compete for the rest of the day. There’s a literal stampede to complete the first of a known three-part race. This goes beyond simple racing as people are actually fighting over barrels.

Bananas is the first guy to cross the finish line followed by Hunter and Jordan, while Kailah ranks first for the girls. Camila and Aneesa round out the girls’ side. The second round has the remaining competitors carrying around actual cannons in two teams of five. The teams are chosen by a lottery – meaning there could be weak links aplenty on one side or the other. Another sprint kicks off the second round before they reach the cannons. The carrying situation turns into a gigantic mess for the “Pink Team” rocking, what else, pink shirts as Jemmye is sprinting around cannons trying to find a spot on cannon with enough people already carrying it and majority of the girls carrying a single cannon while some of the strongest members doing their best to take the lead. The Pink Team’s strategy of ensuring their first cannon makes it to the finish line quickly before taking up the slack for the second cannon proves to be a terrible plan as the Blue Team sticks close together and pretty much ends the round quickly after their first cannon reached the finish line.

The final round will feature the Pink Team members not only shooting cannonballs for the first place win, but also picking the six people who will go home. Devin decides to convince Cory that if Cory wins to save Devin so the latter can be his support for the rest of the game. Cory has a new vigor coming into the third round as he sprints with the cannonball easily while Darrell and Tony trail him. Jenna takes the lead for the girls right before Cory sets off his cannon. Jenna follows Cory’s lead, setting off the cannon to finish this first challenge of the season.

With the wins come Cory and Jenna’s picks for elimination: Simone, Devin (for being untrustworthy), Amanda, Shane, Latoya, and Darrell – thus saving Jemmye and Tony.

But of course there’s a twist as the cameras are still following the eliminated players. Why? Because they aren’t going anywhere just yet – they are entering the “Redemption House”.

Episode High(s): No Alliances. While the game is just starting, the fact is everyone’s been put on notice that every competitor is a loner in this “Challenge”. People you’d expect to be looking out for one another immediately went for the throat and, in the case of Cory & Jenna, putting people out of the game to the best of their knowledge – something that will most likely come back to haunt them in the very near future.

Episode Low(s): No Entry. Never before has someone not come to “The Challenge” because of travel issues until they stopped CT at the border. It’s messed up that he missed out on the opening ceremonies, could return and get something of a free pass where others haven’t – though it’s not like CT doesn’t deserve to be on the show no matter what.

Daily Challenge Winners: Cory & Jenna

Eliminations: N/A

Redemption House: Darrell, Simone, Amanda, Devin, Shane, Latoya

Most Embarrassing Athletic Display: Ashley M. When you don’t compete one has to consider you an embarrassment. Maybe something other than what she was letting on convinced Ashley leaving, but she still quit before really testing herself as she did in the previous “Challenges”.

Competitor of the Week: Cory. On a show featuring such grand names from “The Challenge” series, to see Cory – a guy who has been to a “Challenge” finale – struggle at the beginning of this episode’s challenge, only to find a second wind and steal the show by the end. Yes, a bull’s-eye is on him, but Cory has what it takes to push the competition.

Episode Summary in Five Words or Less: Bombs bursting on the ground.
