The Challenge: Dirty 30 - Episode 4

By James Bullock Aug 11, 2017 - 6:36 AM print

Previously on The Challenge: In the first Elimination Round of the season, Briana & Derrick H. packed their bags, only to end up inside the Redemption House while another pair of competitors potentially find themselves in the same position after losing a hard-hitting Team Challenge the day after.

The fallout from the day’s Team Challenge sees Cory, Nelson & Hunter planning to take out Johnny Bananas potentially in the long run, but with Bananas on the losing side of the previous Team Challenge there’s a chance “long run” could turn into a short stay. On the ladies’ side, Marie is lobbying to get rid either Jenna or Kailah as the two are thick as thieves. But there are also problems in the Redemption House as Devin has a fear about his team’s chances thanks to one thing:

Everyone goes out to party a little bit when the liquor starts flowing and Nelson sees Cory arguing with Johnny. Nelson runs up to intervene.

Nelson isn’t the only one who is suffering from the power of alcohol. Tony, after cooking some eggs, tells Cara Maria that she looks like his mother at sixty years of age. When the girls make fun of Tony drunken statements, he snaps and tries to run up on Cara for “mocking” his mom. Johnny pulls Tony to the side and has to put him to bed while all the girls watching this play out promise to vote for Tony into the Elimination Round.

When the Elimination Round nominations actually begin it’s a crap shoot while trying to break up any potential alliances; specifically Jenna & Kailah. When host TJ Lavin comes to hear their decisions, Cara goes off on Tony in regards to his performances and his lack of respect towards women. And in the end it’s Ammo who gets voted in for the guys (even Cara votes for Ammo after telling Tony off). For the girls, Camila and Kailah are the two names that pop up the most with Kailah winning (or potentially losing) out. Everyone arrives at the Presidio to figure out who will be facing Ammo & Kailah by pulling the potential double cross to choose who will take on the competitors. For the girls it’s Jemmye by order of elimination and it’s up to her to chose Kailah’s opponent: Jenna. Everyone is shocked especially considering Jenna saved Jemmye following the first Team Challenge.

For the guys, Nelson picks the double cross on the first overall try. Nelson doesn’t step up and choose Johnny as Cory hoped and opts to pick Tony. Today’s Elimination Round is a wall-climbing mission – “The Great Escape” – where the winner, once he/she reaches the top dumps a trough of mud onto the loser. The girls are up first and finding a sturdy hole with the climbing pick is the complicated part that proves tiring due to the constant stabbing for Kailah. But Jenna’s poor planning when creating footholds proves to be her downfall as Kailah dumps the mud on Jenna for the win.

The men’s heat is next and Tony’s strength helps him gain an early lead. Ammo makes up a lot of ground by smart positioning that allows for him to make further steps when climbing. Just when Tony reaches for the trough, he slips and falls off the wall. Ammo takes advantage of the situation, taking that final step to defeat Tony to end the episode on somewhat of a surprise.

Episode High(s): Making Moves. It’s amazing how fast things have either fallen apart or come together for the friends & alliances (and even some potential alliances). Power plays are being made left & right thanks to the Daily Challenge. It was so interesting to see Jemmye throw Jenna into the fire, Ammo be tested, and Nelson back down when he had the chance to put Bananas in the danger zone – with the latter potentially putting himself in a potentially untrustworthy situation because he didn’t step up like Jemmye did.

Episode Low(s): Can’t Handle the Alcohol. There’s always that moment during “The Challenge” when the drinks start flowing and someone just can’t handle themselves appropriately. For both Nelson, his actions after getting intoxicated almost sent him home. For Tony, his drunken antics cost him more than anyone as he was not only put in the Elimination Round, but also lost with the potential of not being allowed into the Redemption House.

Daily Challenge Winners: N/A.

Eliminations: Tony (Episode 4), Jenna (Episode 4)

Redemption House: Darrell, Amanda, Devin, Latoya, Derrick H., Briana

Most Embarrassing Athletic Display: Tony. Poor Tony made it two for two in this episode for failing big time when stakes were high. The last episode saw him get thrown on his head for running into the wrong person. This time Tony fell off the wall while simply reaching. For all of his physical attributes, Tony has become something of a choke artist that might just throw in the towel overall.

Competitor of the Week: Ammo. There have been some unexpected great competitors in past challenges, but few come across more of a square peg for a round hole than Ammo. Yet here he is beating underrated competitors and doing well in Team Challenges. By the end of this episode he could’ve actually eliminated someone from the show since they haven’t shown Tony or Jenna going into the Redemption House just yet. It’ll be incredibly interesting how far Ammo makes it in his first “Challenge”.

Episode Summary in Five Words or Less: Take a stand.
