The Challenge: Dirty 30 - Episode 6

By James Bullock Aug 25, 2017 - 4:46 PM print

Previously on The Challenge: The Redemption House emptied with eight returning competitors fighting for a chance to reenter the game. In the end it was Jenna and Tony beating out Amanda and Darrell respectively to be the only returning players while the other six were officially eliminated from the game.

There’s a mix of fun and sadness to start the episode as Tori & Marie play dress-up while making predictions before Jemmye reflects on former “Challenge” competitor Knight who passed away a few years ago & the importance he had on her life. On the opposite end of the spectrum is Jordan reasonably being upset that a house full of grown people can’t clean up behind themselves or store food properly. Jordan has the chance to take out some of his aggression (and vice versa) in this week’s Daily Challenge as they compete in “Pirates’ Treasure”. Before finding out what the Challenge entails, last week’s Challenge winners Tony & Jenna have to pair up teams featuring one guy & one girl. After the teams are chosen, host TJ Lavin reveals that every team has to drag a treasure chest across a beach full of obstacles before reaching the finish line where the potential victorious team must break open the chest with a sledgehammer and raise the flag inside. The Challenge is presented in two heats and after dragging the chest, digging a hole to pull the container under a gigantic log, place it on a wooden platform where they have to guide the chest across this hull from the bottom all the way across, & throw it over a small barricade, CT & Cara Maria pull off a first place win in this heat.

Sadly for Aneesa & Derrick K, they end up stuck under the platform due to the board separation’s hindering the rope needed to pull the chest and resulting in them ending up last. Heat two starts and similar to the first there’s a definite advantage for the expected leaders of this game in powerhouse duo Hunter & Marie. For some reason everyone joins in digging the same hole to get underneath the log instead of spreading across the sand. Veronica & Nelson pull into the lead thanks to the cluster-jam under the log while Cory steals the closest chest to take second place. It’s almost a relay race to the finish, but the unexpected fantastic pair of Nelson & Veronica pull out the victory to earn first place.

With teams Dario & Nicole, Tony & Tori, Derrick K. & Aneesa, and Ammo & Jemmye coming in last during their respective heats they will have to enter the Presidio for a potential Elimination Round depending on who picks the double cross. Later that night everyone has the chance to go out and party. Eventually a rap battle breaks out featuring Jordan and Jemmye where Jordan says she has a, “…down syndrome face.” Dude, what in the hell?

The house rightfully turns on Jordan with Aneesa reading him the riot act – putting himself in prime position for Elimination Round nomination. For the potential female nominations the only two names that show up are Marie and Kailah. When it’s time to officially vote, Marie gets the nod while everyone makes a statement by throwing Jordan into Presidio. Jordan apologizes for his actions and accepts his fate gracefully. When everyone enters the Presidio for the grand Elimination Round, Jordan and Marie’s potential competitors pull the “Xs” with the guys going first. Derrick pulls the life-saving “X”, sending in Ammo against Jordan. For the girls it’s Aneesa becoming the picker for Marie – choosing Tori. The Elimination Round is a classic, “Striptease” – a game based around ripping five patches off of their opponent’s jumpsuit. But there’s a twist as both competitors will be blindfolded. The guys are up first and Jordan gets on the board early.

Unfortunately for Jordan, having one hand makes it a lot more difficult to remove the patches. Down by two with Ammo only needing two more patches to win, Jordan turns it up and just tackles his way to successful removals for the overall victory. Ammo collapses after the Round, ending the episode on a scary note as it could be more than just the end of the road for Ammo during this “Challenge” season.

Episode High(s): Against All Odds. While this episode didn’t provide the most interesting Daily Challenge, what it did produce was a glimpse into the potential future as unlikely pairs such as Nelson & Veronica came together to form a victorious duo. While Cara & CT are typical winners, seeing people like Nelson & Veronica come together for the first time and win is proof that the odds aren’t against those one would expect could suffer against consistent performers.

Episode Low(s): Jordan’s Rap. How could this not be a lowlight? Jordan, in an attempt to burn Jemmye while spitting some bars, said something so disrespectful to not only her, but also disabled people like himself. For someone who was born with a physical disability and has advocated for those who can’t for themselves you would never think he’d use a disability as an insult. Very disappointing.

Daily Challenge Winners: Nelson, Veronica, Cara Maria & CT.

Eliminations: Darrell (Episode 5), Amanda (Episode 5), Devin (Episode 5), Latoya (Episode 5), Derrick H. (Episode 5), Briana (Episode 5), Ammo (Episode 6)

Most Embarrassing Athletic Display: Cory. While this season is based around how dirty things can get, one can’t be a little disappointed in how Cory handled himself during this week’s “Daily Challenge” during the digging portion. Not only did he just stand around (that was pretty smart), but he also stole another team’s chest without a second thought. This wasn’t some mistake – Cory admitted to doing it to survive. Come on, Cory, you’re better than that.

Competitor of the Week: Jordan. For everything he said and did in this episode, one can’t take away from the fact that a man with one hand won an Elimination Round competition based around hand usage. It was an awe-inspiring performance to state the least even if the hope was Ammo would pull off the upset.

Episode Summary in Five Words or Less: Insert foot in mouth.
