The Challenge: Dirty 30 - Episode 8

By James Bullock Sep 8, 2017 - 8:47 AM print

Previously on The Challenge: Following Marie’s defeat at the hands of Tori put the prior in The Redemption House, Aneesa felt the sting of an Elimination Round when she was bested by Kailah in the first of two bouts ready to happen.

The episode picks up where the last left off as the second half of the Elimination Round featuring Cory and Hunter (the latter being chosen by Jordan after he picked the “Double Cross) going head to head in “Dead Weight” – a game where the competitors have to climb a ladder with two heavy weights chained to their ankles. Hunter shows his power early, but Cory isn’t far behind. Unfortunately for Hunter, he hits a literal wall that halts his progress and gives Cory the chance to catch up. They are neck & neck and it simply becomes a race to the bell for a photo finish.

Host TJ Lavin congratulates Kailah for her win before announcing Hunter rung the bell first. The irony isn’t lost on Aneesa that her & Cory, the old flames, would be leaving together. Thankfully for Marie, who is going stir crazy by herself, Aneesa & Cory arrive in The Redemption House. While Aneesa flirts with Cory just to antagonize him, the competitors still in the game have a chance to talk with some of their family members prior to the latest Daily Challenge, “Talk Thirty to Me” – the season’s trivia challenge. The people who get the right answers get the chance to dish out the wrong marks that will propel losers into the water if they rack up three marks. Kailah & Hunter have the chance to arrange the order and Kailah, for some reason, decides that the girls who are out to get her should answers questions first instead of her doing the honors. And it immediately works against her when Nicole, the first questioner gets her question right and “Xs” Kailah to put her behind the proverbial 8-ball.

Veronica follows Kailah’s lead before Jemmye finishes Kailah off and immediately puts her up for the Elimination Round.

Britini, Jenna & Tori take the falls next when Jemmye, Nicole, Camila & Cara Maria go on a hot streak of right answers to put them in the Loser’s Circle for the Elimination Round. It comes down to Camila & Cara Marie before Cara fails to spell “conniving” to hit the water for a Camila win.

The guys’ round is up next and Hunter uses Kailah’s order strategy and he’s the first to hit the water. Nelson, Dario & Jordan end up in the Loser’s Circle. To determine a winner for the male heat, Johnny Bananas somehow keeps questions about “The Challenge”, but Derrick’s on-point answers puts him in the water before Tony wins it all by, ironically enough, answering a question about someone fooling around during a season of “The Challenge”. Ironic because Tony, the man now with a family who has constantly professed his growth as a human being, finds himself celebrating the Daily Challenge win by making out with Camila. Oh, that’s gonna cost him.

Episode High(s): What Do You Know? Aw, the good ol’ fashioned trivia challenge. The amount of smarts & idiocy is always a “Challenge” highlight whenever the contestants are put to the test with their potential safety on the line. This one was really good because not only did it display the level of intelligence & memory of every competitor, it also gave a glimpse into the potential future of who can trust whom going forward.

Episode Low(s): Backseat Snuggle. Seriously, Tony; you just got into a drunken argument with Cara Maria that almost put you out of the game. Tony made it back into the house, had a great conversation with his family, won a Daily Challenge, then gets drunk again to make out with Camila – who knew it was Tony the entire time and didn’t care in her drunken lust that it could hurt his family. Tony just keeps sabotaging himself when he gets so close to success.

Daily Challenge Winners: Tony & Camila

Eliminations: Darrell (Episode 5), Amanda (Episode 5), Devin (Episode 5), Latoya (Episode 5), Derrick H. (Episode 5), Briana (Episode 5), Ammo (Episode 6)

Redemption House: Marie, Cory & Aneesa

Most Embarrassing Athletic Display: Kailah & Hunter. With only one real physical action shown throughout the episode, this week’s “award” goes to the two people who had the Daily Challenge in their back pocket and threw it away by placing themselves last when it was obvious starting off strong would pile up against those in the latter half. Kailah & Hunter had the chance to stay out of the next Elimination Round, yet threw themselves right back in the fire for not paying attention to the details.

Competitor of the Week: Camila. Camila nearly had a panic attack getting ready for the Daily Challenge, yet pulled off an excellent performance answering questions that I naturally thought would work against her; especially the spelling questions since the English language isn’t her first. Camila, one of the biggest names in the game, has secured her safety for another day.

Episode Summary in Five Words or Less: Smoke on the water.
