The Challenge Dirty 30 - Finale

By James Bullock Nov 10, 2017 - 8:42 AM print

Previously on The Challenge: CT, Camila, Derrick, Cara Maria, Jordan & Tori all earned their spots in this season’s finale, but for Jordan it proved to be a rough start as his literally landing in the finale saw him hurt his knee and potentially hurt his chances for winning it all.

The episode picks up where the last left off as the six finalists try to complete the first portion of this finale – a grueling relay race of picking up incredibly heavy stones and carry them down a hill to return them to the grounds they started at. By finding a shortcut, Jordan & Camila finish first, with the duo of Derrick & Cara not being far behind. Pulling in third is CT & Tori, yet they aren’t that far behind in time as well. The next finale portion is a game where they have to throw a bola (a rope connecting two baseball-sized stones) onto a pole like playing a game of ancient horseshoes. Whoever misses the pole must take a shot of fermented llamas’ milk. Thanks to Jordan & Camila getting in first place, they can pick a guy & girl who must land two bola shots. Unfortunately for CT & Tori, they’re chosen and do a terrible job at landing. They aren’t the only ones as everyone eventually takes a shot of milk.

Jordan & Camila finish first again, with CT & Tori pulling off a second place showing with Derrick & Cara almost seconds behind. From a time perspective it seems second & third are pretty much tied. The third stage of this finale sees Jordan & Camila being forced to split and chose new partners – Tori & CT respectively – while Derrick & Cara are stuck together as they all climb, slide down, and trek through hills to reach some puzzle pieces. During the race, Derrick & Cara Maria pull ahead and retrieve the puzzle pieces first before having to reach the area where the puzzle board is located (an insane version of Sudoku).

Derrick leaves Cara to herself to complete the puzzle while everyone else works together – giving CT & Camila the chance to take victory from the jaws of defeat as they were in last place, but ended up in first. Jordan & Tori take second place note long after, but Derrick & Cara are left losing a great amount of time before the fourth portion featuring the “Double Cross”. The winners of the double cross are able to add a player of the same sex five minutes onto their current time – which could completely change the game’s dynamics. Cara & Camila are so fast in pulling the potential two Xs they don’t and Tori wins by default. Tori gives the extra five minutes to Camila.

For the guys, CT pulls the first box and gets the two Xs – handing Jordan an extra five minutes. “Totem Recall” is the next stage featuring the pairs having to search out more puzzle pieces to build a totem pole. But to get to those pieces they must literally climb a sizeable hill and with Derrick, Jordan & Camila reach the summit first they have the opportunity to climb first. Camila has a breakdown, claiming her rope is pulling her down way after Derrick & Jordan successfully climbed the hill.

Camila eventually gets a hold of herself and makes it up; leaving CT, Cara & Tori to follow. The hill is like a giant mud pile that dried out and crumbles at the touch. CT & Cara are able to muscle their way to the top with Tori pulling up the rear. But the part of this stage isn’t over as they now have to run to the puzzle pieces that are contained inside one sizeable box. Passing a totem pole during their journey to the destination, Jordan realizes he will have to recreate it; and he’s completely right. By keeping up with Jordan, Derrick doesn’t have to mesmerize a thing and copies him. Cara does the same thing when CT completes the puzzle. Camila doesn’t get it right and has to run back to the pole to memorize it.

Cara finishes first for the girls, with Tori next and Camila way behind. Coming to a somewhat open area, the finalists witness an explosion to welcome them to another partner-changing scenario for the first place guy & girl from the last stage (Jordan & Cara). Together the three pairs must enter the house that just had an explosion occur inside that set off a smoke bomb, feel the walls and figure out the word that’s written on them somewhere in the building. It’s CT & Cara, Jordan & Tori, and Camila & Derrick going into this smoking house with no masks. Jordan & Tori figure it out pretty quickly, as do CT & Cara. Derrick stands back and lets Camila do all the work. Camila reasonably gets upset over the fact Derrick tried to not get in her way while not pulling his weight in the puzzle house.

Night begins to set and Jordan & Tori are forced to assign one guy & one girl to sleep outside while everyone else gets to relax in a nice tent with a comfy blanket. Jordan chooses Derrick while Tori puts Camila out in cold.

Morning arrives and they enter the final stage that includes them walking across the salt flats to suit up for another race that, this time, starts off with them being dragged while riding a sled. Like something from a video game, fire starts randomly spewing on the course.

Everyone holds on and it becomes one giant race with everyone gunning for glory until they reach another phone with a message from TJ Lavin where he informs them they won’t know the winner … until the finale reunion!

Episode High(s): Gripping Finale. While it wasn’t the most expansive or shocking “Challenge” finale in history, the ever-changing position changes between first, second & third places really made for a tantalizing episode as every time it appeared someone had a solid lead something happened that turned everything around. With the cliffhanger announcement it’ll be interesting to see just how it all panned out in a week’s time.

Episode Low(s): Cliffhanger to End All Cliffhangers. I’m all for a good cliffhanger, but this was so unexpected to hear & see that lack of conclusion airing on the same episode as the norm. The reunion is usually good viewing because old wounds are reopened – now it’s must-see, but it came at the expense of the actual finale. I guess you can be too mad about a game based around dirty actions would have a dirty ending.

Eliminations: Darrell (Episode 5), Amanda (Episode 5), Devin (Episode 5), Latoya (Episode 5), Derrick H. (Episode 5), Briana (Episode 5), Ammo (Episode 6); Nicole (Episode 10); Marie (Episode 10); Cory (Episode 10); Nelson (Episode 11) Leroy (Episode 15); Veronica (Episode 15); Britni (Episode 15); Aneesa (Episode 15); Jemmye (Episode 15); Dario (Episode 15); Johnny Bananas (Episode 15); Hunter (Episode 16); Jenna (Episode 16); Kailah (Episode 16); Tony (Episode 16)

Most Embarrassing Athletic Display: Derrick. One of the most profound and beastly competitors in the history of “The Challenge”, Derrick hasn’t been pushed to the limit when it comes to puzzles and by having a partner who could do all the work; but it potentially cost him greatly in the end. If Derrick was as assertive with helping solve those puzzles as he’s always been going head-to-head in an Elimination Round he might be definitively in first place.

Competitor of the Week: Jordan. It’s obvious Jordan is channeling Hunter’s toughness because hurt knee be damned; dude is going all out. In a do or die situation, Jordan, thus far has done and could be the overall winner for the guys.
