The Challenge Dirty 30: Episode 12

By James Bullock Oct 5, 2017 - 7:59 AM print

Previously on The Challenge: Just when things were looking up for Hunter, Nelson got him kicked off the show by attacking Derrick in a drunken rage and left the game in an upheaval as an alliance was about to be broken without the ability to nominate Nelson for the Elimination Round.

The show picks up where the last left off with the competitors finding out that Nelson is gone from the game. Without Nelson to vote for, Dario gets the majority of the votes because of his neutral nature in this game so far. For the ladies, Veronica is the main person being called out for not stepping up & setting the same standard as her fellow veterans. When it’s time to enter the Presidio for another Elimination Round there are five guys and girls each ready to pull the “Double Cross” to potentially choose who will face Veronica and Dario. For the ladies, Tori pulls the safe “X” and throws Aneesa in to take on Veronica – getting a return for being thrown in by Aneesa in a few Rounds ago. The guys are up next and Jordan pulls his third “Double Cross” in a row. With a heavy heart for having to throw in one of the men in his alliance, Jordan chooses Tony to go in to fight Dario.

Tonight’s Elimination Round is called “Web of Lies” – a game where the opponents will have to climb down a twenty-five foot steel cage tower where the opponents will have to maneuver their way through a web of ropes to retrieve a flag before climbing back up and stake their flag at the starting point. The men are up first and Tony takes the lead, but Dario is right there with him until they get to the bottom. Climbing up, Tony starts pulling ahead as the ropes going up prove to be a lot harder to manage than going down. Tony breaks through the hole at the top to win & stay in the game.

When it’s time for the women, Veronica almost drops straight down to the bottom as Aneesa gets stuck on the level above her the flag. Instead of switching game plans, Aneesa continues to jump on the plastic that Veronica easily fell through. The climb back up sees Veronica keep a steady pace, almost lapping Aneesa to win.

TJ Lavin reveals that Dario & Aneesa get to go back to The Redemption House with the promise of it being an incredibly tough experience if they want to make it back in the house. For Veronica, this is actually a relief because she knows Aneesa isn’t liked – meaning she can plan for revenge without making a lot of noise like Aneesa did when she came back. On the opposite end of the spectrum when it comes to knowing one’s place in the house, Tony is unsure if his alliance is working for his betterment. Confiding in Hunter, Tony makes a deal that they don’t say each other’s names for the remainder of the game.

It’s time for the Daily Challenge dubbed “Blackout”. Starting inside a box, the three teams of five will have to literally claw their way toward freedom by figuring out a combination that is scratched off the glass holding them inside that will give them a pick axe. Once out of the box, the teams will have to solve a 3D puzzle. The winners will have the chance to not only send in a guy-girl pair for the Elimination Round, but also send a guy-girl pair into the Redemption House. Once the teams are picked (Blue Team – Jenna, Johnny Bananas, Cara Maria, Jemmye & Hunter; Pink Team – Camila, Derrick, CT, Tori & Leroy; Green Team – Veronica, Jordan, Britni, Tony & Kailah) they all get the scratching until Bananas figures out the combination by them finding three numbers and him trying over & over again until the right number comes up to pop the lock. It’s smashin’ time for Hunter because all he wants from this Challenge is to break things!

The Green Team are not too far behind the Blue Team; leaving the Pink Team scurrying to catch up. The Pink Team eventually figures things out just as Hunter and Jordan are pulled out of the game temporarily to get their bloody hands checked. For Camila it’s a chance for her to run the show while standing on the platform that the puzzle needs to be solved on. Veronica, who stated before the game that she was a puzzle master, leads her team to glory by staying calm and simply explains her thinking to an open-minded group.

The Green Team has to decide who to send to the Redemption House, but alas, we’ll have to wait until next week to find out who gets put on the chopping block.

Episode High(s): Turning It Upside-down. The game just got turned upside-down thanks to the Green Team’s success in the Daily Challenge. Following a somewhat shocking Elimination Round thanks to the fact the Redemption House is still active, Veronica’s team of people believed to be on the low-end of the totem pole pulled off one of the most important wins of the game thus far. What could come from this episode might change the entire “Challenge”.

Episode Low(s): The Redemption Surprise. While it’s great that people who apparently got eliminated still had a chance to come back and win it all, the last Redemption Challenge and subsequent returns felt like a fitting end to the Redemption House twist. If the third Redemption Challenge lives up to the hype TJ Lavin is building then maybe it’ll be worth it in the end. For now it just feels a little redundant & unnecessary.

Daily Challenge Winners: Veronica, Jordan, Britni, Tony & Kailah

Eliminations: Darrell (Episode 5), Amanda (Episode 5), Devin (Episode 5), Latoya (Episode 5), Derrick H. (Episode 5), Briana (Episode 5), Ammo (Episode 6); Nicole (Episode 10); Marie (Episode 10); Cory (Episode 10); Nelson (Episode 11)

Most Embarrassing Athletic Display: Aneesa. After returning to the game by making it back in via the second Redemption Challenge it seemed like Aneesa might have a chance to go further in the game that could’ve ruined it for several people. Then she was forced into another Elimination Round and essentially lost because she couldn’t break through a single layer of plastic. Instead of trying to claw her way through the barrier stopping her from advancing, Aneesa just jumped her way back into the Redemption House.

Competitor of the Week: Veronica. The star of back-to-back physical moments was the veteran to end all “Challenge” vets in Veronica during this episode. After being called out by the youngsters (and even some of her fellow vets) for not stepping up and showing out, Veronica won the Elimination Round with relative ease, then figured out the puzzle faster than anyone. Veronica is still a force to be reckoned with no matter what people like Kailah says.

Episode Summary in Five Words or Less: Don’t underestimate experience.
