The Challenge: Final Reckoning - Episode 2

By James Bullock Jul 22, 2018 - 10:43 AM print

Previously on “The Challenge Champs vs. Stars”: The casts of “Dirty 30” & “Vendetta” (plus some other shows) came together to take on another season of “The Challenge” with their greatest rival, leading to Zach getting an early advantage alongside teammate Amanda before Kailah and Melissa were sent home for a fight that came out of nowhere; as well as the return of the Redemption House.

Rather than pick up right where the last episode left off with the cliffhanger of what will happen to Kailah and Melissa’s partners

Kayleigh & Kam, the focus shifts to the Redemption House where host TJ Lavin witnesses the Kailah-Melissa fight alongside the people in the RH. Shifting scenes to some twelve hours later, TJ declares Kam and Kayleigh will now be teammates. Though Kam and Kayleigh are still in the game they aren’t necessarily the best of friends. Melissa leaves on a low note because she understands the situation Kam is now in with Kayleigh as her ally because of her.

Some politicking begins afterwards as Brad tries to get the scoop on his partner Kyle by asking his ex Cara Maria about Kyle and his trust worthiness (of course she doesn’t speak highly of the person who ruined their relationship). Johnny Bananas is still without a partner while trying to figure who could be his teammate considering he’s made so many enemies in this game over the past few seasons including current cast mate Natalie as their relationship dissolved and led to them no longer being friends. There’s even talks going on between teammates and former lovers Chuck and Britni; leading to everyone in the Redemption House to believe their still something between the two. But all of that doesn’t compare to someone getting hit with a pillow. Angela in the Main House attempts to read the clue for this week’s Challenge, only to become a victim of the seasonal tradition of getting pelted with pillows for being that first reader. With Angela not being in the know, she flips out over being struck with a pillow in the face.

Bananas, apparently trying to get people on his side early, is the first to apologize for what happened and potentially has Angela on his side from here on out. The competitors arrive on the field to finally discover Bananas’ partner.

Last season, Tony put Bananas out of the game and now has to work with him. Tony is thrown right into the heat of battle as he and everyone else plays “Wreck Yourself”: a game where a person must push their suspended partner into a cluster of rings in hopes of collecting as many as they can in three minutes while unintentionally colliding with other opponents attempting to do the exact same thing. The first round begins and while Brad (swinger) & Kyle (pusher) are doing well, CT’s partner Veronica gets tangled up with Amanda.

By the round’s end, Kyle & Brad pulls out the victory to join the second heat teams in hopes of determining an overall winner. Unfortunately a majority of those teams involved in the second heat, they are failing including Derrick not listening to teammate Tori.

Round two concludes with ties featuring Brad & Kyle and Bananas & Tony getting the same amount of rings, but the time was on the prior’s side and makes them the overall winners of this Challenge. TJ reveals everyone but the winners are on the chopping block for a chance to go into the first Elimination Round as this episode comes to a close.

Episode High(s): Balance of Power. This episode was built on the premise of power structures being established either though politicking or through sheer talent as Kyle & Brad proved themselves as strong competitors & power players in this game early on; potentially controlling the opening moves of a chess game that is every season of “The Challenge”.

Episode Low(s): You Talk Too Much. While the talking and people strategizing about what could come in the near future, there was a lot of it in this episode leading to a lull about twenty minutes in where there wasn’t any action one would expect from “The Challenge”. Balancing the talk and the action is always a tough act depending on what the Weekly Challenge is, this episode wasn’t a good example of finding that balance. Also, Cara using a guy to make an ex jealous no matter the outcome is just genuinely disgusting. Cara’s come across as better than this, but sure isn’t showing it this season thus far.

Weekly Challenge Winners: Brad & Kyle.

Eliminations: N/A

Redemption House: Britni, Chuck, Jenna, Jemmye, Jozea & Da’Vonne

Most Embarrassing Athletic Display: Derrick. Yes, Veronica and Amanda ended up tangled & dangling, but it was Derrick who flopped around like a fish out of water while being yelled at by his teammate for being completely incompetent. Derrick’s refusal to listen and come back to the starting point cost his team in grand fashion while making their team look incredibly weak.

Competitor of the Week: Kyle. While Brad was the muscle for his team, Kyle’s become of the season’s focal points by getting in the head of a strong female competitor, aligning with a strong rookie. Kyle is becoming a force and could’ve just set the stage for ending Cara’s run incredibly early.

Episode Summary in Five Words or Less: Talk soup & tangled webs.
