The Challenge: Final Reckoning - Episode 3

By James Bullock Jul 30, 2018 - 12:01 AM print

Previously on “The Challenge Champs vs. Stars”: Kyle & Brad were able to win the weekly Challenge, giving them a lot of power heading into the first Elimination Round where host TJ Lavin has declared everyone is in danger including new team of Johnny Bananas & Tony and Kam & Kayleigh after the latter’s respective vendettas Melissa & Kailah were sent home for fighting each other.

Johnny Bananas starts this episode off by being Johnny Bananas – bringing up a rumor that Paulie is stating he’s a target of a coward in Kyle because Cara Maria has interest in him. Kyle confronts Paulie and the latter flips the script by reminding Kyle that Shane is the person he dislikes the most. Brad finds himself debating about reeling in Kyle after he starts confronting Cara about his reasoning for aiming for Paulie. This is topped by Kyle actually hooking up with Faith with Natalie also has issues with a cast member as Kayleigh revealed her for being a pansexual on Twitter. And CT is so worried about Veronica being unable to perform up to the level she was once known for and CT still is on. Elimination Nominations arrives with TJ Lavin informing the cast everyone has a vote (all the votes will be done in secret to avoid burn & bandwagon votes) while the winners of every Weekly Challenge (in this case Kyle & Brad) votes count twice instead of once. The end result … won’t be revealed until the Elimination Round begins – giving Cara time to do the complete opposite of what she promised her partner Marie by revealing their voting process while throwing Marie under the bus by telling Natalie & Tori their names were coming out of Marie’s mouth.

In the Redemption House things go downhill between partners and exes Britni and Chuck; leading to an argument that has everyone watching make fun of the absurdity.

The main house cast arrive in a dome known as “Armageddon” to find out the four teams that were voted for; leading to the revelation that Paulie & Natalie got the most votes. Standing on platforms that light up, the Elimination Round competitors actually find out who voted for them including the safe Kyle & Brad (as well as Joss & Sylvia, Amanda & Zach, and Kam & Kayleigh). In another interesting twist, the teams that voted for them are actually the teams available for choosing to battle in Armageddon. Natalie sacrifices her friendship with Kam to potentially get rid of her vendetta Kayleigh. The first Elimination Round is “Think Outside the Box”: a game where one tethered team member must retrieve puzzle pieces to hand off to their caged teammate. The game begins and Paulie realizes he has to use a yo-yo effect to get the pieces while Kam just simply goes forward, grabs a piece and tells Kayleigh how to complete the puzzle.

Kayleigh starts getting befuddled over putting the puzzle together, but the one advantage they have is the fact Paulie can’t make it to Natalie to tell her how to solve the puzzle. “Killa Kam” won’t let her partner fail and the end result is another perfect Elimination Round for Kam to close the episode.

Episode High(s): What a Twist. In an unusual planning choice, this season of “The Challenge” took three episodes to get to an Elimination Round, but the actions leading up to the moment of truth was well worth the wait featuring not-so-secret votes to answer the question how opponents would be declared; potentially creating new vendettas and making people think twice about their choices going forward. Also, seeing Kam win another Elimination Round is awesome as she’s not only because a fan favorite, but delivers when it matters in the best way possible.

Episode Low(s): Petty pettiness. There was definitely a lot of pettiness involved in this episode, most of it featuring Cara. Not to harp on Cara yet again, but she has been a perfect example of a terrible person – using a guy who is in a relationship to make her ex jealous and now selling her partner out because they don’t like each other outside of the show. The Redemption House wasn’t without its petty moments thanks to the argument between Britni and Chuck that just seems to happen because the two don’t see their housemates are doing everything to send them over the edge together.

Weekly Challenge Winners: Brad & Kyle.

Eliminations: N/A (Potentially: Paulie & Natalie)

Redemption House: Britni, Chuck, Jenna, Jemmye, Jozea & Da’Vonne (Potentially: Paulie & Natalie)

Most Embarrassing Athletic Display: Paulie. The only man in the first Elimination Round of this season was outdone by “Killa Kam” athletically, flopping like a fish in hopes of getting to those puzzle pieces. Sadly it’s not all his fault as his tether was noticeably thicker than Kam’s to potentially make it an even playing field – it wasn’t.

Competitor of the Week: Kam. The force that is “Killa Kam” has now moved through another season of “The Challenge” as she led her team to victory; grabbing puzzles and coaching like a boss. It’ll be interesting to see if Kam is continuously underrated and put into Elimination Rounds this season; leading to several teams being exiled by “Killa Kam”.

Episode Summary in Five Words or Less: Tethered by the truth.
