The Challenge: Final Reckoning - Episode 4

By James Bullock Aug 6, 2018 - 10:09 AM print

Previously on “The Challenge Champs vs. Stars”: The new team of Kam & Kayleigh overcame Paulie & Natalie in the season’s first Elimination Round.

The first Elimination Round losing team arrive in the Redemption House, exciting Natalie because some of her “Big Brother” colleagues are in the Redemption House. Paulie immediately notices that Chuck & Britni – who were fighting a night before – are becoming friendly again; potentially giving him something to use to make his way back into the house. Paulie isn’t even coy about his intended actions of telling Brad lies regarding Britni & Chuck reuniting in the house.

Relationships both new & old are still running through the main house as Nelson & Kayleigh try to find some type of middle ground after what happened the last season where Nelson believed a rumor Kayleigh hooked up with Johnny Bananas – someone who is now trying to butter up “Bad Girls Club” alum & “Challenge” rookie Angela. But while the main house cast is lounging around poolside, the Redemption House empties so the competitors looking to reenter the game confront an old friend from “Dirty 30”, the “Double Cross”. Depending on what team pulls the Double Cross will decide the other team entering the Elimination Round alongside them to fight their way back into the house. After Jozea & Da’Vonne pick the wrong one, Natalie & Paulie step up to pull.

Everyone arrives at Armageddon for another Elimination Round and the revelation that there was a Redemption House. When put on the spot as to what other Redemption House team will join them in the pit, Paulie declares the girlfriends of Brad & Zach are going home; putting Jenna & Jemmye and Britni & Chuck out of the game. That may not have been a smart move. Host TJ Lavin informs the teams of Paulie & Natalie and Jozea & Da’Vonne they will be playing “Balls to the Wall” with both teammates trying to break through a block of ice by retrieving sledgehammers horizontally stuck in walls that must be broken through to attain the sledgehammers. After a strong start, Jozea & Da’Vonne free their hammers first and start working over the ice. Natalie, unfortunately, cannot get the hammer free to save her life – it costs them in the end.

Paulie snaps and cusses out the people laughing at him.

In hopes of getting in the final word, Paulie claims Britni was hooking up with Chuck. There’s definitely a look of belief in Brad’s eyes that what Paulie says is true before Natalie & Paulie return to an empty Redemption House.

Episode High(s): A Failed Crusade. Obvious drama has been a big part of the season; specifically focusing on the issues between Cara and Kyle. Then along came Paulie and his lack of care for making enemies. Paulie threw gasoline on a roaring fire of well-liked veterans that don’t like him from sheer association by claiming Britni slept with Chuck in the Redemption House after sending Jenna & Britni home. With Paulie & Natalie being sent back to the Redemption House, there’s always the chance he could reenter the game (or at least formulate some more lies).

Episode Low(s): Redundant Relationships. While it’s understandable the stage is being set for bigger things involving certain relationships such as Bananas & Angela and Nelson & Kayleigh (not to mention the on-going issues between Cara & Kyle), it definitely is feeling like retread after only four episodes of seeing the same people talk about the same things or interact the same way without any actions in-between (like an actual Weekly Challenge) to keep things from getting boring & repetitious.

Weekly Challenge Winners: N/A

Eliminations: Britni & Chuck (Episode 4), Jenna & Jemmye (Episode 4)

Redemption House: Paulie & Natalie

Most Embarrassing Athletic Display: Natalie. While her teammate was mostly responsible for their losing last week (though some of the blame fell on production more than Paulie). Natalie looked physically weak and no way a threat considering Da’Vonne – a woman of similar build who isn’t considered anything in this season due to her lack of even being around – was her direct competition and smoked her.

Competitor of the Week: Jozea. Luck played a major role in Jozea making it back to the main cast, but it was his ability to step up and compete like a veteran that helped his team attain victory. It’s amazing how much Jozea has proven himself compared to his first “Challenge” season where he was a running joke.

Episode Summary in Five Words or Less: A detour on Redemption Road.
