The Challenge: Vendettas - Episode 12

By James Bullock Mar 22, 2018 - 9:30 AM print

Previously on The Challenge: The Mercenaries returned and Britni ended up going home while Nelson, Brad & Kam lived to fight another day.

Natalie, who was professing loyalty to Nelson up to this point, almost sent Nelson home by voting him into the Elimination Round last week. With Nelson coming back, she immediately tries to apologize. Though Nelson seems okay, it’s obvious he has plans. Unfortunately for him, since Nelson only survived the previous Elimination Round via a draw, only Brad & Kam get the benefit of utilizing the Grenade (either take a winner’s purse, physically tie up one competitor, or add time to someone’s game). Kam opts to throw the time Grenade at Cara. Brad ties up Kyle – actually putting him out of this week’s Challenge completely since he can’t swim with his legs tied up. This week’s Weekly Challenge is “Spanish Treasure”: a two-team based game where each person in the team must swim to the bottom of a lake, deposit a ball into a net that reveals a treasure chest once the net it is full. The Troika of Tony, Zach & Natalie get to put the teams together and one team consists of people who can’t swim or had the Grenades used on them including Nelson being put on the weakest team even though Natalie is a part of the Troika this time around. Team 1 just keeps it moving and smashes this game.

Team 2, however, is absolutely horrendous with so many people on their team unable to even dive. The clock runs out and Team 1 of Zach, Tony, Brad, Devin, Natalie, Nicole & Jemmye take the victory.

But with seven winners and only three Troika spots, the guys outtalk the ladies and audibly muscle their way into being a part of the Troika even though it’s a girls’ elimination day. Brad, Tony & Zach make up the new Troika while Team 2 have to vote for the girl who will automatically go into the Elimination Round. With the votes tied between Kailah & Cara Maria, it’s up to the Troika to decide … and they choose Kam! After getting a massage & meal sponsored by Burger King, the Troika come together to decide who will potentially take on Kam.

When the girls have to argue their reasoning for not taking on Kam in The Inquisition, Kailah puts down Natalie for not being the best competitor at the table and lacking loyalty; causing an argument between the two where Natalie is beside herself trying to explain how she hasn’t been disloyal. When it’s time to vote who should battle Kam, Natalie is given the nod to participated in “Spanish Torture”: a game where the competitors must play acrobat by shimming across thin ropes from one side of The Ring to the other to smack the bell on the other side. With Natalie being a former gymnast, this game is made for her. Then Natalie slips and Kam takes the lead.

Kam is the Elimination Round queen of this season and sends Natalie packing; earning a Grenade where she can make a competitor perform thirty burpees before the next Weekly Challenge, take a winner’s purse, or add time to someone’s game. Host TJ Lavin drops a bombshell that the Czech Republic is their upcoming destination point; meaning the finale is coming closer. There’s no waiting around for another Weekly Challenge as the competitors arrive in Rhonda, Spain for “Help Me, Rhonda”: a mile run leading to a zip line where they have to repel off a bridge and run to the finish line with the fastest guy & girl getting to split $25,000 while the slowest guy & girl go home. Before that, Kam drops the money-stealing Grenade on Devin instead of sticking with her usual strategy of adding time to Cara’s performance. The race begins and everyone gets to cut a promo as to why they need to win including Leroy trying to help his family open up a group home and this Challenge ironically named after Cara’s mom. The episode ends on a cliffhanger as to who is going home.

Episode High(s): Doomed to Repeat it. This episode was a perfect example of people just not learning from history. Kam threw another Grenade at Cara, only for it to blow up in her face and almost sent her home. The girls on the winning side of the Weekly Challenge letting the guys roll over them in the process of forming the Troika and believing they’re looking out for their best interests coming back to bite them like it did Natalie. At least Kam did learn in the end and took Devin’s money.

Episode Low(s): Lacking Creativity. This week’s episode didn’t feature the most interesting Weekly Challenges that’s for sure. Beyond another swimming Challenge that saw the most interesting thing being who could or couldn’t swim and the second one being an exaggerated promo package, this episode’s Challenges definitely left something to be desired.

Weekly Challenge Winner(s): Zach, Tony, Brad, Devin, Natalie, Nicole & Jemmye

Eliminations: Nicole R. (Episode 1); Rogan (Episode 1); Cory (Episode 3); Alicia (Episode 4); Melissa (Episode 5); Victor (Episode 7); Sylvia (Episode 7); Shane (Episode 7); Veronica (Episode 8); Joss (Episode 8); Marie (Episode 9); Johnny Bananas (Episode 10); Kayleigh (Episode 10); Britni (Episode 11); Natalie (Episode 12)

Most Embarrassing Athletic Display: Kam. Being on a team where a majority of the people can’t swim brought some sheer hilarity, but Kam’s attempt at diving was both embarrassing and scary as she noticeably grew fearful and had to be assisted by divers to prevent her from dipping into the depths.

Competitor of the Week: Kam. No, this isn’t a typo as Kam had a big moment of embarrassment in the episode that was topped by her Elimination Round performance. In a game that was really made for her opponent, the “Vendettas” Elimination Round queen sent another person home after reasonably struggling to get across those thin wires.

Episode Summary in Five Words or Less: Sink or shimmy.
