The Challenge: Vendettas - Episode 4

By James Bullock Jan 27, 2018 - 5:19 PM print

Previously on The Challenge: In the first Elimination Round of the season, friends Nelson and Cory played a flaming game of soccer that resulted in Cory being sent home prior to Johnny Bananas, Natalie & Devin becoming the new Troika.

The show picks up where the last left off as Kayleigh, Alicia & Kam join the Troika for the Inquisition so the Elimination Round nominees can plead their cases. Kayleigh does a great job putting over her loyalty while Alicia tries to play the “aren’t you tired of the same people running the game” card. Kam, on the other hand, ends the episode questioning Natalie about her reasons for voting for her; promising to not forget who came after her if she returns from The Ring.

For the rest of the girls it’s a carefree night of drinking & partying leading up to the next day; though potential Elimination nominees like Kayleigh are still playing the field with the likes of Nelson. But that won’t save any of the potential nominees considering only three people are a part of the Troika. Melissa, who has a budding relationship with Nicole, has to automatically enter The Ring as she couldn’t compete in last week’s Weekly Challenge. When it’s time to vote for Melissa’s opponent, Natalie announces her roommate Alicia needs to go in. Devin & Johnny Bananas join Natalie’s lead; putting Alicia in for “Chain Reaction”: a game where the competitors will have to build a ladder utilizing a series of bars that need to be attached to two parallel, vertical chains with the winner being the first to complete the ladder and ring the bell at the top. Melissa is the favorite as everyone is giving her advice while Alicia does her best on her own. Unfortunately for Alicia, Melissa’s strategy works a lot more effectively.

Melissa winning awards her not only a continued stay in the house, but also one of those game-changing grenades with her getting the options of choosing the next set of teams in the upcoming Weekly Challenge, force a single player to sit out of the next Challenge, or make one player drink a whole liter of cream before the Weekly Challenge. To the victor go the spoils as Melissa snuggles with Nicole. Brad and Marie get into an argument over the fact Marie starts taking fully loaded pizzas for herself; though all she wanted was a different type of the multiple pizzas. Things get personal when Marie tries to play a prank by throwing empty pizza boxes on Brad and the latter doesn’t take lightly. The argument that ensues sees Marie go low in the insults.

This week’s Weekly Challenge is all about taking a look back to what made the older “Challenge” seasons so great: trivia & eating weird foods in “Food Wars”. The first failure of a team in this Challenge will have to vote one of their teammates into a gender-less Elimination Round. But before anything can get started, Melissa chooses to pull the figurative pin in her grenade to choose the teams. Melissa joins Shane & Devin as a unit. The other teams (Leroy, Britni & Kyle; Bananas, Kayleigh & Cara Maria; Brad, Joss & Sylvia; Veronica, Jemmye & Nicole; Tony, Marie & Zach; Natalie, Nelson & Kam; Kailah & Victor) have to plan who will eat the food if they lose a round from their respective teams. The first question sees Bananas’ team correctly answer the capital of Spain – opting to protect Leroy’s team from having to eat anything weird. The rest of the teams are forced to send in one player to eat (drum roll please)…

Tony is the only one to finish the cheese in the allotted time; forcing Nelson, Sylvia, Victor, Shane & Nicole’s team – leaving only Teams Bananas, Leroy & Brad. The second question is connected to a poll where “Challenge” fans were asked who would make for the worst boyfriend. Thanks to his cheating antics last season in “Dirty 30”, Tony has surpassed heartbreaker Cory in the eyes of the fans – something Team Bananas guesses and gets right. Tony volunteers himself for his team while Leroy does the same to eat marshmallows. Aw, ain’t that sweet. Bananas’ favor to Leroy actually backfires as Tony just devours the marshmallows; putting out Team Leroy leading up to the final question … or better yet a final eating round where Tony tries to be the Tom Brady of nasty competitive eating against Cara Marie and a bowl of mayonnaise.

Somehow, Tony pulls off the victory of a lifetime to earn his team $8000 each while making himself, Zach & Marie the Troika. Thanks to two mutual vendettas being on the same team, Team Tony chooses Team Brad to go in; leaving Brad to tell Sylvia the bad news without any type of conversations between herself, Brad and fellow teammate Joss. Joss doesn’t stand up for Sylvia and just goes along with the alpha male; making this another girls' elimination week. Kailah finds a sick Sylvia to put it in her head that Britni needs to go in to leave this episode on a cliffhanger.

Episode High(s): Food Wars. Two of the things from every “Challenge” season that are always highlights are trivia challenges and the competitors eating weird foods. This time both of the best worlds came together and produced another fun moment that had people throwing up and others upset over the fact Tony cleaned out the competition.

Episode Low(s): Low Blows & Punking Out. Brad was in the middle of two controversial moments from this episode. First there was Pizza-gate with Brad and Marie that caused an argument between the two where Brad, for all of his obnoxiousness concerning the situation, was hit below the belt verbally by Marie as she brought up his parenting skills. On the opposite end of the spectrum was Brad throwing Sylvia to the figurative wolves and Joss, instead of being a man about his, just let Brad walk all over him. Brad’s been gone from the game for quite a while, yet is the dominant male of this season so far while causing moments a plenty.

Weekly Challenge Winner(s): Tony, Zach & Marie ($8000 each & total)

Eliminations: Nicole R. (Episode 1); Rogan (Episode 1); Cory (Episode 3); Alicia (Episode 4)

Most Embarrassing Athletic Display: Leroy. Marshmallows; marshmallows, dude. You couldn’t choke down some marshmallows against a guy who just ate a plate of rotten cheese? That should’ve been a lay-up plate for Leroy. But maybe against a normal eater Leroy could’ve pulled off what was the impossible here.

Competitor of the Week: Tony. The new “Challenge” eating machine came through and obliterated the competition during this episode. The fact he volunteered himself in two out of three times without hesitation is commendable in its own right, but to actually succeed is downright award worthy (hey, you eat a plate of rotten cheese and not demand a certificate or something).

Episode Summary in Five Words or Less: It’s not what you eat.
