The Challenge: Vendettas - Episode 6

By James Bullock Feb 12, 2018 - 5:50 PM print

Previously on The Challenge: Sylvia entered the Elimination Round, taking on Melissa in the latter’s second Elimination Round; resulting in Sylvia ending Melissa’s intended winning streak to put her out of the game.

Sylvia is savoring the victory while letting everyone know just how dirty Melissa was during the Elimination Round where Melissa even bit her. On the opposite end of the spectrum is Nicole claiming jealousy sent Melissa home, not Sylvia’s talents. With one couple not being focused any more it’s time to find some other potential hookups including Nelson & Kayleigh. But more interesting is the fact someone sneaks into one of the rooms, putting a note in Britni’s bed stating people are talking about her behind her back.

Veronica starts an investigation with the big suspects being Marie, Shane (who found the note) and even Jemmye (who was with Veronica when the note was discovered). When Marie finds out her potentially being the culprit she defends herself while blaming Cara. But no suspect is apprehended before the next Weekly Challenge. Unfortunately for Sylvia – who had a Grenade for her Elimination Round win – she can’t compete alongside Natalie today; putting them out of the competition known as “Gasping For Air”: a team-based, time-oriented underwater game where the competitors must pull rings between two yachts docked 150ft apart from one another with the only thing saving them from drowning due to a lack of oxygen are oxygen tanks stationed on the line at various points. The teams for this game were selected at random with Team Brad, Nelson, Kayleigh, Kam & Marie taking on Team Joss, Victor, Britni, Cara Maria & Veronica in the first heat while Team Shane, Jemmye, Nicole, Devin & Leroy go against Team Johnny Bananas, Kyle, Zach, Kailah & Tony in the second heat. The first round begins and Joss breaks his mask while Brad makes it completely across without stopping.

Nelson doesn’t do anything while Victor completes the course. Though Britni only gets 35 ft., Kayleigh gets nothing. It’s up to Kam to make up some ground for her team against Cara Maria, but neither get anywhere. Last but not least are Marie and Veronica with the latter getting nowhere while Marie only moved five feet.

Heat two is up starting with Shane and Bananas and they keep it going until the very end while sucking up oxygen. Shane is able to out-swim Bananas, but Johnny does finish. Kyle and Nicole are next up with the latter making it 80 ft. while Kyle can only get 50 ft. Jemmye has to take on Zach with Jemmye failing to figure out how to used the oxygen mask; putting her at forty ft. of completion with Zach only getting five more feet than her. Devin does a rather poor job compared to the rest of his team, only getting 15 feet while his opposition in Kailah makes it 20 ft. It’s down to Leroy & Tony and Tony gets the ring across the entire field while only using one tank to restore his oxygen. Leroy on the other hand…

Team 4 (Johnny Bananas, Kyle, Zach, Kailah & Tony) win the entire game; being able to split $25000 and the three fastest swimmers in Bananas, Kyle & Tony becoming the new Troika. Unfortunately for Team 1, they either have to send Brad or Nelson into the Elimination Round. All the girls on their team vote for Brad while it’s up to the Troika to choose his opponent. It’s time to do some politicking and Victor is running around trying to prevent his name from being called. Natalie, on the other hand, wants Victor gone and has Bananas in her back pocket.

The Troika has a great debate, eventually settling on these three men.

Shane is so confused as to why they didn’t throw Joss in to cause a big meathead fight. When it’s time for The Inquisition, Shane throws Victor and Devin under the bus for gunning for Bananas. Even when Victor or Devin try to defend themselves, Shane sticks to his story of it all being his fellow nominees being the problem; not him. While The Inquisition is going on, another note is found and Marie is immediately found at the crime scene while denying it left & right; though Britni is claiming the whole thing must be a poorly attempted prank. Marie runs back to her friends to tell them it has to be Cara or Britni considering where the notes are found. Following The Inquisition while everyone tries to blow off some steam, Victor looks to win some favor of the Troika. Shane overhears what’s happening, confronting Victor and telling him he’s a suck-up. With the budding friendship between Shane & Victor tarnished, the two can enter The Ring without a care as to who is forced to take on Brad. Unfortunately we won’t know whom the Troika picks until next week.

Episode High(s): Wacky Water Races. This week’s only bit of real action was a genuine treat as every player had a chance to shine with some doing exceptionally well and others not so much. The intrigue of seeing who could actually make it across the haunting water was enough to get a viewer excited, but seeing the actual outcomes made for a very entertaining experience.

Episode Low(s): The Note. What began as a moment of true intrigue degenerated into something reminiscent of a schoolyard activity gone horribly boring. The note didn’t really stir any pots and was eventually nothing more than something that Marie got upset about without someone coming forward (at least in the confessional). Also it was disappointing Sylvia could use her Grenade and the fear that she could be going home due to sickness soon is troubling considering the performance to put on last week.

Weekly Challenge Winner(s): Johnny Bananas ($5000; $11,250 total winnings), Kyle ($5000), Zach ($5000; $13,000 total winnings), Kailah ($5000) & Tony ($5000; $13,000 total winnings)

Eliminations: Nicole R. (Episode 1); Rogan (Episode 1); Cory (Episode 3); Alicia (Episode 4); Melissa (Episode 5)

Most Embarrassing Athletic Display: Joss. While some couldn’t make it a good foot swimming, Josh barely could make it into the water as he broke his eye goggles before the game began; entering the depths before having to come back up after blinding himself. Joss, the big bad dude who seemed to be ready to dominate the game, became this Challenge’s Radioactive Man.

Competitor of the Week: Tony. While Tony wasn’t the only person to complete this episode’s Weekly Challenge he was the most impressive as he not only completed the course, but also did it while using one tank – meaning he was closer to drowning than anyone who made it as far as he did, yet wouldn’t stop moving. Tony has been an inconsistent player in the past, but this was an example of him being a force when everything comes together.

Episode Summary in Five Words or Less: Duds, depths & deceit.
