The Challenge: Vendettas - Episode 8

By James Bullock Feb 26, 2018 - 9:49 PM print

Previously on The Challenge: In the Elimination Round, Brad sent Victor home. With Shane & Kam being voted into the following double Elimination Round alongside Veronica & Joss, the unexpected happened as it was announced instead of fighting each other the four would have to take on “Mercenaries” Jordan, Aneesa, Tori & Derrick. Jordan won his heat against Shane with Aneesa breaking Veronica’s finger during their round.

The episode picks up right where the last left off as host TJ Lavin asks Veronica what happened. With her fingers taped up, Veronica can’t even close her hand; meaning she can’t compete in the game they’re playing, “Crazy 8” – a potential wrestling match over a rope in the shape of the number 8 where the person who takes control of the rope has to hang it on their pillar. This puts Veronica out of the game as well. Next up in the Elimination Round is Kam vs. Tori. And like her fellow Mercenaries, Tori dominates early. Then the somewhat unexpected happens as Kam wrestles the 8 from Tori in the second heat.

Kam keeps the momentum heading into the third and eventual fourth heats as the third round ended in a stalemate to win it all.

With Kam picking up a big win for the actual competitors, Joss enters The Ring with the hope he can stomp “The Challenge” pitbull. Derrick not only keeps the 8 close to his chest, but also starts mouthing off while on the bottom.

No matter what Joss does he can’t get the 8 from Derrick as they continuously reset. By round 7, Joss starts literally stomping Derrick and still can’t get the 8 from Derrick. TJ Lavin announces that the fight’s been going on so long that the first person to win a round wins the entire thing. But that doesn’t mean the game ends suddenly as they go another four rounds until Joss makes a crucial mistake: he falls out of the zone while thinking Derrick did the same, but Derrick didn’t and yanked the 8 from his opponent to win the game.

When Shane asks TJ Lavin about the money they won in Weekly Challenges, the host announces that every bit of money won is thrown into the final pot and not given out in segments. Kam is the last person standing from this Elimination Round, getting the chance to pick a Grenade (a competitor has to either be greased up heading into the Weekly Challenge, perform some type of endurance run before the next Weekly Challenge, or wear flippers for said Challenge). For the guys, there’s a mini celebration that Joss is gone. For the ladies, specifically Natalie, there’s a negotiation process going on as they try to convince Kam not to throw the Grenade at them. When the next day arrives, TJ Lavin introduces everyone to “Car Crash”: a game where four teams will have to jump from elevated platform to platform where the platforms are wet cars. Before the teams are made, Kam uses her Grenade; throwing the lube Grenade at Cara (something that could be detrimental for a game where has to land on metal). Cara warns Kam that if the latter’s team loses and the prior’s team is victorious Kam will be going into another Elimination Round.

First up is team Bananas, Cara, Nelson & Natalie vs. Team Zach, Tony, Kailah & Nicole with Kailah and Natalie leading the way. It doesn’t go well for Kailah as she falls off the second car of five. Natalie makes it to car three & plummets. Zach uses the hatch window his body breaks open to save himself from falling off car four while Nelson just zooms past him. Both Zach & Nelson make it all the way across, but Bananas isn’t so lucky.

The same thing happens for Nicole as she fails. Cara can’t make it two cars deep, and Tony gets himself disqualified by using the harness to save himself from falling. The second round is up next with Team Kam, Jemmye, Marie & Brad taking on Leroy, Devin, Kayleigh, Britni & Kyle. Both Jemmye & Kayleigh chicken out unlike Britni who just takes a big fall. Kam also doesn’t jump either, while Kyle hits the water after one car. Marie can’t make it to car two as well. Leroy, on the other hand, does try to jump and ends up knocking himself out.

Brad also takes a hard hit & fall; leaving only Devin to fail as well to conclude the game. TJ Lavin announces Nelson won the game for his team. The new Troika is chosen with Cara being left out of her team’s choosing; putting Nelson, Bananas & Natalie in the power seats. When it comes to the Elimination Round nominations, the team of Brad, Jemmye, Kam & Marie had the worst time and is forced to vote on a girl. Kam has to make the deciding vote; sending Marie in to the shock of her roommate to close the episode.

Episode High(s): Is That All You Got? Man, what an exceptionally fun episode this one was. The Elimination Rounds were intense, brutal, and downright barbaric with Derrick adding some humor to the action by mouthing off. To top it off was the Weekly Challenge was crazy & one of those examples of the creators of these tasks being tougher than expected for the competitors; setting the stage for some big falls.

Episode Low(s): Veronica’s Injury. It was highly disappointing to see Veronica got out the way she did – not because of failure, but due to injury. With her history as Aneesa’s friend turned vendetta stemming from the last seasons, it’s sad that they may never conclude their problems on the battleground where they started.

Weekly Challenge Winner(s): Nelson, Cara Maria, Bananas & Natalie

Eliminations: Nicole R. (Episode 1); Rogan (Episode 1); Cory (Episode 3); Alicia (Episode 4); Melissa (Episode 5); Victor (Episode 7); Sylvia (Episode 7); Shane (Episode 7); Veronica (Episode 8); Joss (Episode 8)

Most Embarrassing Athletic Display: Kam. She wasn’t the only person to give up in the Weekly Challenge, but she was the only person who put a target on herself before the game began. For her to lob a Grenade at someone like Cara then refuse to compete when the time came is just absurd.

Competitor of the Week: Derrick. “The Challenge” pitbull not only came into this season of “The Challenge” with nothing to lose, but a level of determination to simply win that is so unlike anyone else in “Challenge” history that allows him to push not only himself to the limit, but also his opponent. This season has produced some of the craziest Elimination Rounds in “Challenge” history thus far; this one was no different.

Episode Summary in Five Words or Less: Hard hits & harder falls.
