The Challenge: Vendettas Episode 14

By James Bullock Apr 8, 2018 - 8:38 AM print

Previously on The Challenge: After barely surviving the final Weekly Challenge, Leroy was thrust into an Elimination Round with Brad where he sent his fellow “Challenge” vet packing.

Still being housed in Prague, Leroy takes his chance to confront Tony about not telling him about being nominated for the Elimination Round without alerting him. Tony doesn’t apologize for his actions while Cara Maria tries to convince Kyle he has a chance of actually winning this finale while she doesn’t. Arriving at Kost Castle, the remaining competitors from this season are informed by host TJ Lavin they will have to work around each checkpoint stationed in & around the castle while wearing various limitations such as full suits of armor or taking on the latest Mercenaries.

Kam and Tony are shook as they were the Mercenaries’ biggest vendettas respectively. With only four people being allowed into stage two of this final Challenge (two guys & two girls), the eight opponents start this challenge by running while having their legs shackled. Cara reasonably compares it to running with you pants around your ankles – a situation made worse by them running through mud. Arriving at the token station, the first competitors in Zach and Tony start the game where they have to collect unlit torches to deposit them in their own barrel (with the ability to take another competitor’s torch as well). Tony & Zach start stealing from Leroy’s barrel; beginning a back & forth robbing season between the three. Kyle takes advantage of this situation and ends up in first place while continuing on.

Nicole, who was proudly stealing from Cara while proclaiming Maria would do the same to her eventually, suddenly sprains her ankle and is told by the doctors to not continue. Nicole being left on the ground, Kam & Cara take the lead for the girls while Kailah is in third place when it comes to the ladies. Kyle is the first person to meet the Mercenaries and complete the game of high-low by guessing the potential worth of a card in comparison to the one initially flipped by the Mercenary. Depending on what happens, the competitor either goes about their merry way or is forced to feel the wrath of a Challenge Grenade. Kyle scores two in a row with ease as does Leroy before they have to start the next phase featuring them wearing a suit of armor. Zach follows Leroy & Kyle’s leads, as does first-place for the ladies in Cara.

Tony is next up and almost fails at 2-1. Kam unfortunately has to take a Grenade with Melissa deciding of the three Grenade options she’ll have to bury a log while deck out in a suit of armor. Kailah pulls off two right picks in a row; potentially putting her in second place if Kam takes too long burying that log. Kam does a good job burying the log, but loses her second place positioning while Kyle ends up in a puzzle section where the reward for failure is eating some nasty food if the person who pulls out the last sword on the board is their opponent.

Kyle ends up in third place behind Zach while Tony pulls up the last spot. Kam is pulling up the rear for the girls while Leroy loses his position due to the armor weighing him down. Cara eventually disrobes the armor and presses on to the next section just like Zach and Kyle to secure their spots in the second stage of the finale. Leroy and Tony are officially eliminated; leaving it down to Kam and Kailah in a race for the final spot for the women. Sadly for Kam, that Grenade cost her big as Kailah is able to get across the finish line first; ending her time in this game as well.

TJ Lavin explains to the remaining competitors that they must complete a color memorization puzzle – a single winner will be crowned and awarded $150,000 plus all the money left behind by the people sent home; $220,000-plus. The game begins and Cara & Zach are allowed a thirty second head start and both end up making a single mistake that could cost them as the show ends in a cliffhanger.

Episode High(s): Switching Positions. One of if not the best part about every “Challenge” finale is the changing positions where one minute a competitor will be in the lead, only to end up trailing behind. Add the twists of fate that affected Nicole, Kam failing against Mercenary Melissa, and the potential come from behind by Kyle or Kailah really made this somewhat ho-hum finale idea into something highly entertaining.

Episode Low(s): Cliffhanger. While doing a “Challenge” finale result reveal cliffhanger isn’t anything new or surprising, it’s always disappointing when they decide to tie-in the result with the reunion special like they did last season and will do again this season. The reunion is wild enough without holding the viewers hostage essentially by not telling them who won what they’ve been invested in for several months.

Weekly Challenge Winner(s): N/A

Eliminations: Nicole R. (Episode 1); Rogan (Episode 1); Cory (Episode 3); Alicia (Episode 4); Melissa (Episode 5); Victor (Episode 7); Sylvia (Episode 7); Shane (Episode 7); Veronica (Episode 8); Joss (Episode 8); Marie (Episode 9); Johnny Bananas (Episode 10); Kayleigh (Episode 10); Britni (Episode 11); Natalie (Episode 12); Devin (Episode 13); Jemmye (Episode 13); Nelson (Episode 13); Brad (Episode 13); Tony (Episode 14); Nicole (Episode 14); Leroy (Episode 14); Kam (Episode 14);

Most Embarrassing Athletic Display: Nicole. While anyone can suffer an injury while shuffling across a muddy field while having your ankles chained together, the ridiculous moment of karma is what made Nicole’s finale performance embarrassing as she happily stole from Cara in an effort to win; only to be beaten by her own body. #KarmaMaria

Competitor of the Week: Kyle. The lay-up has done nothing but impressed when the pressure is one this season. Kyle used the stubbornness of his competitors against him to take the lead early in the finale, lost his top position, held on long enough to make it to second place and retain his spot in the overall finale with the intent of being a “Challenge” rookie to pull off the big win – something that is a rarity.

Episode Summary in Five Words or Less: Live by the sword…
