The Challenge: Vendettas Episode 9

By James Bullock Mar 4, 2018 - 7:22 AM print

Previously on The Challenge: Thanks to the “Mercenaries” Jordan, Aneesa, Tori & Derrick, Shane, Veronica and Joss were sent home with only Kam surviving the Elimination Round that led to a crazy Weekly Challenge where Johnny Bananas, Natalie & Nelson became the new Troika and Marie was nominated for the next Elimination Round.

Since Kam was responsible for the final vote in Marie’s favor to go into the next Elimination Round, both Marie & Kailah are confused as to why Kam said her name; questioning if they can trust her going forward. Kailah, fearful her name might be brought up by the Troika, runs up to tell Bananas that she’s on the side of Leroy; thus putting her on the same side as Johnny by association – something that isn’t necessarily true and Bananas sees right through her little plan. Marie also has her plan of convincing Bananas to help her by putting in Kayleigh. Nelson can’t agree to it since he and Kayleigh have a budding relationship. When the Troika comes together, Nelson actually stands up for Kam while trying to get Cara Maria on list. Eventually the three names chosen are none other than…

Kailah is incredibly emotional over what happened, Nicole is somewhat stunned and Cara is proven completely right when she believed she wasn’t safe following the previous Weekly Challenge when she was left out of the Troika even though she was on the winning team. When it’s time for The Inquisition, Kailah can’t explain her alliances with Leroy, Nicole can’t explain why she’s aligned with everyone in the house, and Cara is pretty much safe because Nelson outs himself as the sole voter for her nomination. The latest Elimination Round proves Bananas right as his earlier conversation with Marie had him say the next one would be a puzzle challenge. After the Troika sends in Kailah to take on Marie, host TJ Lavin explains tonight’s game, “Basket Case”: a game where the girls will literally claw their way out of a basket to retrieve puzzle pieces & solve it for the victory.

Kailah is the first person to get out as MTV understandably starts playing Green Day’s “Basketcase” to be the theme song for Marie’s loss.

Kailah gets a Grenade of her choosing (Cash Up: Take all the money someone has won for your personal account; Team Up: Choose the next teams in the Weekly Challenge; Put Up or Shut Up: Pick one player to either win their way into the Troika or end up in as an Elimination Round nominee). The next day arrives and Kailah has her chance to pull the pin on the Grenade, but not after the announcement Leroy is back & okay after his fall last week knocked him out.

Rather than play a regular game of soccer, everyone will be on those crazy stilts while running around in giant bubbles to see who is the best football players. Kailah decides to use the “Team Up” Grenade. Team Blue (Kailah, Kam, Zach, Tony Kyle, Brad, Natalie & Nicole) choose Kyle & Natalie to assist competitors on their side who inevitably tumble over while the Green Team (Bananas, Britni, Cara Maria, Leroy, Nelson, Devin, Jemmye & Kayleigh) use Bananas & Britni to pick up the fallen. Unfortunately for Kyle, Natalie can’t lift anyone and his people (specifically Nicole) continuously fall. Ironically enough, falling actually helps Devin score.

Tony gets the play set by Nicole and really punts it to even the score to set the tie-breaking round.

Zach takes his sweet time and waits for the bodies to filter out of his way; leading to him scoring the winning goal.

With such a large team, it makes it somewhat difficult to choose the new Troika, but they eventually decide Kailah, Zach & Tony are the new Troika. The Green Team has to choose the next Elimination Round nominee and Devin & Bananas are the only names being called. With the votes tied, Jemmye & Kayleigh make the deciding votes in Devin’s favor even though Nelson voted for Bananas. Nelson is infuriated that Kayleigh is protecting Bananas, Devin tries to figure out why Jemmye & Kayleigh are siding with Johnny. Bananas slips into the conversation between Devin & Jemmye. This starts an argument between Bananas and his vendetta of Devin where Devin cuts the promo of a lifetime; promising to go full Hulk on Bananas if he is put in The Ring alongside him for the next Elimination Round.

Episode High(s): Which Way Do We Go? So much great intrigue, politicking and action in this episode. From Marie & Kailah running after Bananas to Devin’s closing-episode promo, the amount of hype this episode gained not simply from what was happening on the battlefield, but also in the figurative boardroom was enormous by the episode’s end. The fallout seems even more profound, though it’ll be hard to outdo the hilarity of a Weekly Challenge featuring bubbled chicken people kicking around a ball.

Episode Low(s): Elimination Round. Definitely one of the weaker Elimination Rounds not only of the season, but also compared to a lot of the previous seasons’ offerings. It was a game made worse by Marie’s inability to stay focused and impress really for the first time after being in previous seasons.

Weekly Challenge Winner(s): Kailah, Kam, Zach, Tony Kyle, Brad, Natalie & Nicole

Eliminations: Nicole R. (Episode 1); Rogan (Episode 1); Cory (Episode 3); Alicia (Episode 4); Melissa (Episode 5); Victor (Episode 7); Sylvia (Episode 7); Shane (Episode 7); Veronica (Episode 8); Joss (Episode 8); Marie (Episode 9)

Most Embarrassing Athletic Display: Marie. Not only has Marie rarely succeeded on “The Challenge’s” grand stages when the pressure’s on, but she’s failed at being a player who can hang her hat on dominating. Look no further than this episode for another example of Marie getting frustrated, flustered, and downright quitting en route to losing. She’s a fun personality to watch outside of the game, but when its time to compete Marie just isn’t consistent.

Competitor of the Week: Kailah. Though Kailah started the episode off like someone understandably desperate in hopes of preventing her exit from the show, she stepped up big time by winning the Elimination Round and putting together the victorious team in this episode’s Weekly Challenge. She almost made it to the finale last time and if she can put together strong performances & smart plays like she did in this episode Kailah might make it all the way.

Episode Summary in Five Words or Less: It is destiny.
