The ROHbot Report: Lowell TV Taping Results, ROH in Edinburgh, & More

By James Bullock Jul 1, 2017 - 10:58 PM print

Welcome to another edition of The ROHbot Report – the only article you need for all the Ring of Honor news you have to know. ROH finished its second biggest weekend of the year last week in historic fashion. Lets find out what went go down in Lowell during the latest TV taping.

“Best in the World ‘17” TV Taping Results; June 24th, 2017; Lowell, MA
– ROH Six-Man Tag Team Championship: Dalton Castle & The Boys defeated Coast 2 Coast & Flip Gordon to retain
– Matt Taven defeated Ultimo Guerrero
– Motor City Machine Guns defeated War Machine
– Kris Wolf defeated Sumie Sakai in a Women of Honor match
– Punishment Martinez defeated Jonathan Gresham
– Cheeseburger & Jay Diesel defeated The Tempura Boyz
– The Young Bucks & Hangman Page defeated The Briscoes & Bully Ray
– Jenny Rose defeated Mandy Leon
– Marty Scurll defeated Vinny Marseglia, Josh Woods, Will Ferrara, El Terrible, and Frankie Kazarian in a Six-Man Mayhem match
– Beer City Bruiser defeated Brian Milonas
– ROH Television Championship: Kushida defeated Jay White to retain
– Karen Q defeated Deonna Purrazzo and Kelly Klein in a Triple Threat match
– ROH World Championship: Cody defeated Christopher Daniels in a Two Out of Three Falls match to retain

You know the routine – I’m not going to judge too harshly about what happened during the TV taping without actually seeing the product these tapings were done for. With that being stated, Ring of Honor reentered the same building that witnessed Cody becoming the new ROH World champion at Christopher Daniels’ expense, Dalton Castle & The Boys gaining the Six-Man Tag Team Championship, and Kushida retained the ROH World Television title. Everything remained status quo when it came to champions from this taping, but some of the circumstances surrounding those retentions were a little questionable; specifically the World title match where Daniels reportedly turned against the crowd that turned on him the night before while Cody embraced the fan base he had lambasted for the past six months for being pretentious and not appreciative of bigger stars “invading” their precious realm. It appears ROH is learning The Bullet Club is over like rover and can’t get heel heat no matter what the members do including hanging wrestlers and super kicking children.
There were several ongoing stories showcased during this taping and even a few new ones. First there was the ongoing feud between Jay White and Punishment Martinez after Martinez defeated White’s Search & Destroy stablemate and tried to add insult to injury afterwards – forcing White to make the save for Gresham from a post-match thrashing. Will Ferrara decided to attack Cheeseburger after his successful match alongside Joey Daddiego – a match that occurred after some odd moment where groupies tried carry off to who knows where. The Briscoes & Bully Ray still can’t get on the same page thanks to Jay’s lacking of focus on anything than getting revenge. Ray could be in the crossfire of The Briscoes’ anger if things don’t take a turn for the better in the very near future. There were other emphatic moments seen during the taping including the continued problems between Jay Lethal and Silas Young & Beer City Bruiser featuring the latter pair carrying around signs signaling the lack of Lethal on ROH TV for the upcoming weeks, and Shane Taylor’s potential singles push. Though it doesn’t look like the best episodes on paper, ROH TV has been fantastic for the past two months and it’s hard to believe that’ll change considering the roster is mostly the same.

Coming hot off the heels of the sold-out War of the Worlds 2017 Tour in North America, ROH is thrilled to announce, in conjunction with NJPW, CMLL and Revolution Pro Wrestling, the first-ever War of the Worlds UK Tour from August 18th, 2017 – August 20th, 2017! With stronger-than-ever partnerships, stars from the top professional wrestling organizations in the world will do battle over the course of three nights! Officials from all four companies have been meeting throughout the early parts of the summer creating and signing matches the fans want to see. The first match has been signed for Edinburgh and it is a clash between two top tag teams: The Briscoes vs. Ultimo Guerrero & Rey Bucanero!

The stars of CMLL will be apart of the “War of the Worlds: UK” tour including bona fide legends. On one of side of the ring will be two men who know each other well as partners and two men who were once grand rivals. Out of the four competitors only Ultimo Guerrero is familiar to the ROH audience & roster by having competed in tag team encounters in ROH and taken Matt Taven to the limit in CMLL. Alongside Guerrero for this match will be the ROH debuting Rey Bucanero – a man who has won the CMLL World Light Heavyweight title, but also the World Tag Team Championship four times with three of those reigns happening alongside Ultimo. On the opposite end of the spectrum will be their opponents – arguably the greatest tag team in Ring of Honor history. While Mark & Jay have been focusing on six-man tag supremacy alongside Bully Ray, they are still on the hunt for a ninth World Tag Team title reign. There’s a good chance The Briscoes could kill two birds with one stone during this event by picking up a big win against legendary opponents that could turn into a future ROH World Tag Team Championship match. For Team CMLL, this is another opportunity for a pair of luchadores to test their abilities against the best wrestling has to offer today in what should be a very fun match similar to what happened at “Best in the World”.

Officials from all four companies have been meeting throughout the early parts of the summer creating and signing matches the fans want to see. A brawl between two bruisers will take place in Edinburgh: Bully Ray vs. EVIL!

When Takaaki Watanabe was just a young lion trying to catch a break in both New Japan and ROH he had the opportunity to challenge veterans of the sport with the intent of not only defeating them, but also parlaying the win into championship glory. It wasn’t until Watanabe transformed into EVIL and joined Los Ingobernables did he find that missing spark that would change his career that minor wins just couldn’t accomplish. Eventually EVIL became a Six-Man Tag Team champion in New Japan while demonstrating the ability to turn into a big singles star in the future. EVIL’s path to success thus far has glaring similarities to the journey that took the former “Buh-Buh Ray Dudley” from stuttering buffoon potential singles star to one of the greatest tag team wrestlers of all time as his career in ECW started off rocky before finding his niche & a character that worked for him. Ironically enough, these two men have done battle recently when Bully Ray & The Briscoes successfully defended their Six-Man Tag Team Championship during “War of the Worlds: Dearborn”. Los Ingobernables gained a measure of revenge by defeating Bully Ray, The Briscoes & Dalton Castle in an eight-man tag match on ROH TV following the aforementioned event – putting the score at 1-1 between Ray & EVIL. Now, for the first time, Ray and EVIL will fight in singles competition in what should be a hard-hitting affair that could easily see Ray picking up a loss against the former young lion.

Curt Stallion vs. Myron Reed

Mandy Leon vs. Stacy Shadows

The Kings of Wrestling vs. The Briscoes
