The ROHbot Report: Soaring Eagle Cup , More Kenny Omega, And More

By James Bullock Oct 28, 2017 - 10:15 AM print

Welcome to another edition of The ROHbot Report – the only article you need for all the Ring of Honor news you have to know without stepping in the ring. (Although you can step in the ring here) Ring of Honor is debuting not only in a new market, but also a new concept this weekend. Lets find out what’s going down

Soaring Eagle Cup Preview; October 28th, 2017; Mt. Pleasant, MI

Soaring Eagle Cup: Cody vs. Christopher Daniels
This year has been a tumultuous one for Christopher Daniels – a man who finally achieved World champion status, only to have the fans turn against him in favor of a rebel looking to win by any means necessary. Ironically enough that man will step into the ring with Daniels for the fourth time this year (second time in singles competition) thanks to this tournament in the ROH World champion. Cody will come to Michigan with the knowledge of how to defeat Daniels not only once, but twice in one night as he won the title from “The General” at “Best in the World ‘17” before retaining the gold in a Two Out of Three Falls match on ROH TV. Cody also has a moral victory over the grand slam champion by defeating Frankie Kazarian on ROH TV with the World title on the line. But Daniels does have a pin fall victory over Cody when they first clashed in a Triple Threat match at “War of Worlds: New York”. They have great chemistry and this will be a fantastic first round encounter.

Soaring Eagle Cup: Jay Lethal vs. Matt Taven
Though Cody and Daniels have recent history that everyone talks about whenever they’re around each other, that rivalry can’t compare thus far to what started in 2014 when Jay Lethal aligned himself with Truth Martini en route to become a two-time ROH World Television champion shortly after Martini dropped Matt Taven from The House of Truth. Taven took exception to not only Martini’s actions, but also Lethal’s as the then-champ did everything in his power to keep Matt away from the title he held for a majority of 2013. When “Field of Honor ‘14” concluded, Taven walked away from the rivalry defeated and focused on tag team competition while Lethal grew into the face of ROH by winning the ROH World champion and having great matches with a variety of opponents. This could prove to be a huge moment for Taven follows the lead set by Silas Young by besting Lethal here. Lethal needs to get back in his winning ways if he wants to not let his era slip and men like Taven take the moniker of ROH’s “franchise.”

Soaring Eagle Cup: Dalton Castle vs. Flip Gordon
Following ROH’s “War of the Worlds: UK” tour, the career of Dalton Castle was at a crossroads. “The Pro Wrestling Peacock” found himself on the bad side of The Bullet Club that saw him & The Boys lose the ROH World Six-Man Tag Team title to The Hung Bucks of Matt & Nick Jackson and Adam Page. The title change happened only one night after Castle confronted ROH World champion Cody in an attempt to answer the champ’s open challenge similar to SANADA before him and Cheeseburger after the former Six-Man titleholder. Cody didn’t take Castle confronting him lightly, attacking Dalton and putting him out of action with a back injury. And in a perfect turn of events for Castle, Dalton was able to make his return at Cody’s expense that saw a masked Castle attack the World champ after unveiling himself.
But Castle isn’t the only man involved in this match that has drawn the ire of The Bullet Club. Since his ROH debut, The Bullet Club has hazed Flip Gordon. But these “harmless” ribs left Gordon hurt & unconscious (even Juventud Guerrera got in on the #SuperKickParty held in Gordon’s honor). But this is and isn’t about their mutual problems with The Bullet Club. This first-time encounter could produce a phenomenal match that gets Castle back in the winning ways that made him a Six-Man champion and one of the most popular wrestlers in ROH history, or the chance for Gordon to pull off the upset thanks to the 4Nifty. Depending how the first round turns out there’s actually a chance either man could use this victory as a way to take on Cody later in night as he too is a part of the tournament. It’s hard not to get excited about the potential of this tournament thus far thanks to the participants and matches announced thus far.

Soaring Eagle Cup: Frankie Kazarian vs. Jay White
Over the last few months, The Addiction have found themselves on the wrong side of the ROH fan base’s adulation unlike what was the story in regards to Frankie Kazarian and Christopher Daniels when 2017 began when the latter was moving toward his first, and thus far only ROH World Championship reign. But before the fans were heralding The Addiction a bastions of Honor Jay White came in contact with the pair by aligning himself with The Motor City Machine Guns in what would become a long-running rivalry. Unfortunately for White, every time he’s been in the ring of with “The Heavy Metal Rebel” he’s been on the losing end. Fortunately for White, all of those bouts but one were tag team matches where he didn’t take the fall at Kazarian’s hands (the only other match was this year’s Honor Rumble where the two didn’t even interact). Another plus for White is the fact the New Zealander has a pin fall victory over Daniels from last year during the “Reach For the Sky” tour. Jay White went nine months without taking a pin fall or submission loss during his initial time in ROH. Kazarian, though he’s relied on Daniels to win most recently, has proven to be just as good now than during his believed peak during his time as a focal point in TNA’s X-Division. This could easily be the sleeper hit of the show no matter the winner.

Ring of Honor returns to the Alamo City on Friday, November 17th for night one of Survival of the Fittest! Your favorite ROH stars will compete in a three-night tournament to determine the 2017 Survival of the Fittest winner. The winner of this year’s tournament will get the customary ROH World Title shot at a later date and etch their name in the history books! Seven out of ten men that have won have gone on to either win the championship with their title shot or do so at a later date – winning ROH’s preeminent tournament has proved it can launch careers! The very first match signed for San Antonio, however, is a special Women of Honor clash: Deonna Purrazzo vs. Britt Baker!

It’s something to be said about having a homecoming spoiled. In wrestling it’s becoming the norm that grapplers come to an arena housing their friends, fans, and, most importantly, family to witness a person who has sacrificed so much showcase just what all that time, energy & pain was meant for – a glorious moment to prove both believers and doubters wrong. Britt Baker thought “Global Wars: Pittsburgh” was that moment for her as she returned to ROH a better wrestler than before; ready to take over the Women of Honor. Unfortunately for Baker, her team was bested by a trio of WOH stalwarts – Deonna Purrazzo, Mandy Leon & Jenny Rose – that proved too much for Britt and her partners Faye Jackson & Sumie Sakai. The match’s conclusion left a bad taste in Baker’s mouth not just because she lost, but because she wasn’t involved in the deciding fall – Baker didn’t lose, her team lost for her. In an effort to avenge what she considered a travesty, Baker has challenged the literal “Globe Trotter” Purrazzo to a one-on-one battle. Like Baker being upset about the loss, Purrazzo seemed perturbed someone of Britt’s status would challenge one of the best women’s wrestlers in the world today. never one to let a challenge pass her by, Deonna looks to put Baker in her place. But one can’t count out Britt Baker as she’s been making a name for herself while gaining the level of experience needed for someone to beat a rising star getting the praise she believes she deserves. The Women of Honor division has seen some upsets this year and this one could be no different if Deonna takes Baker lightly.

“The Cleaner” Kenny Omega, the inaugural and current IWGP U.S. champion and leader of The Bullet Club, will compete at ROH Elite in Fort Lauderdale, FL on November 11th, Sunshine State Excellence in Lakeland, FL on November 12th for an international TV taping, and at Survival of the Fittest: Night 1 in San Antonio, TX on November 17th.

This is absolutely fantastic, unexpected news that is something ROH fans have wanted to become the norm for a long time. The belief can’t be denied that Kenny Omega is one of, if not the most in-demand wrestler outside of WWE going today; and for very good reason thanks to the high level of quality he’s been a part of in 2017 thus far alone. It’ll be interesting to see if Omega is involved in multi-man matches alongside The Bullet Club, or will have the chance to showcase his skills in singles action similar to what happened at “Global Wars: Chicago”. The expectation for amazement is definitely high for these shows.
