The ROHbot Report: War of the Worlds: London, Future of Honor, and More

By James Bullock Jul 30, 2017 - 9:07 AM print

Welcome to another edition of The ROHbot Report – the only article you need for all the Ring of Honor news you have to know. Worlds are preparing to collide when ROH heads to the UK. There are some big matches announced for the card – so lets find out what they have planned.

In London at York Hall on August 18th the Six-Man Tag Team Championship will be defended against the masked trio of Mistico, Delirious and Jushin Thunder Liger

When The Boys won the ROH World Six-Man Tag Team Championship alongside Dalton Castle at “Best in the World” it was considered one of the biggest upsets in ROH history for good reason. Castle & The Boys, as talented as they are, couldn’t pull it together as a unit in the ring until that lone night in Lowell where Jay Briscoe’s obsession cost his team the title. But it will be a completely different scenario for the champs coming into London as they won’t only be in the driver’s seat for the first time as champions, but also taking on men who aren’t blinded by revenge. This international trio of masked gentlemen include a legendary luchador, a former World title contender, and, arguably, the greatest junior heavyweight to ever lace up a pair of boots. When it comes to Liger, his isn’t unfamiliar with Castle as the two have split wins in ROH; not to mention their tag team encounters. Though this is a serious matter thanks to it being for a championship, expect things to get a little silly as seen time & time again Liger, Delirious, The Boys & Castle are all in the ring together.

It’ll be Jay Briscoe vs. Kenny King in London!

March 2011 proved to be a turning point in the careers of Kenny King & Rhett Titus as The All Night Express stepped into the ring with, at that time, arguably the best tag team in ROH history. On that night in New York, The ANX stepped into the ring with Jay & Mark Briscoe, but Dem Boys were unlike their usual selves as they took pride in brutalizing their opponents. Less than a year prior, King was in the ring with the future ROH World champion and this Jay Briscoe was unlike anything he’d ever been in the ring with as the match progressed. But The ANX fought through the pain and surprised the ROH world by prevailing. What would come from that win was a blood feud unlike anything seen in ROH history that collimated with King & Titus defeating The Briscoes in the third Ladder War match before winning the ROH World Tag Team Championship a few months later. When The ANX reunited two years ago as King returned to ROH it was at The Briscoes’ expense. Though Mark & Jay avenged the losses, the sight of one-on-one battles featuring the brothers and the former members of ANX are a rarity. With Briscoe obsessed with getting revenge against The Boys and potentially regaining the Six-Man Tag Team title, a highly-focused King could pick up a big win that could be topped by the fact he’ll enter this bout as the Television champion if he can defeat Kushida in Concord. Expect more of a brawl than a wrestling match from this one as the bad blood returns as the match progresses.

On Night 1 of the “War of the Worlds: UK” tour, CMLL’s Ultimo Guerrero & Rey Bucanero will battle The Addiction!

The stars of CMLL will be a part of the “War of the Worlds: UK” tour including bona fide legends. Ultimo Guerrero has become a familiar face to the ROH audience & roster by having competed in tag team encounters in ROH including a successful bout over The Kingdom at “Best in the World” and taken Matt Taven to the limit in his home promotion and Ring of Honor. Alongside Guerrero for this match will be the ROH debuting Rey Bucanero – a man who has won the CMLL World Light Heavyweight title, but also the World Tag Team Championship four times with three of those reigns happening alongside Ultimo. On the opposite end of the spectrum will be their opponents – two vanguards of modern day tag team wrestling with the experience of their veteran counterparts. When it comes to both teams there it’s usually a battle of youth and experience, but that won’t be the case this time around as both come in with a wealth of knowledge and, most importantly, wear & tear from years of battles. What really makes this match interesting is how the ROH World Tag Team title scene will look following the tour. The Addiction are scheduled to fight the champs during the tour, and if Team CMLL wins this one right before Daniels & Kazarian become the three-time World Tag Team champions a rematch could result in the first Mexican ROH Tag Team champions. No matter if a rematch ever happens, expect a very good match in the UK.

On Night One of the ‘War of the Worlds: UK’ tour in London Sha Samuels returns when he takes on Bully Ray, Jay Lethal, and Silas Young!

In 2015 when Preston City Pro and Ring of Honor held joint events, Sha Samuels went 3-0 against ROH competitors. But on those three consecutive nights Sha found himself in singles matches, not an environment like this one featuring three highly respected grapplers that span generations. You have, of course, Bully Ray – a multiple time World Tag Team champion in almost every major promotion he’s competed in including Ring of Honor where he & The Briscoes became the second Six-Man Tag Team titleholders. Then there’s Silas Young – ironically enough one of the men Ray defeated to become the champ. “The Last Real Man” has been searching for that big win that propels him to another level. For Young, to accomplish his goal he’s targeted none other than the self-proclaimed “Franchise” of ROH in Jay Lethal. This will be the first time Lethal will be in the ring officially with Silas since Young & Beer City Bruiser put him on the shelf by attacking him at “Best in the World”. This will also be the first time Lethal is in a ROH with both Ray and Samuels and could produce a crazy Four Corner Survival match unlike anything seen during the entire tour.

In London at York Hall, Mark Briscoe meets one of the best high flyers in the world, Ryan Smile!

While his brother will be in the ring with someone he’s incredibly familiar with in London, Mark Briscoe has the opportunity to take on a young man with veteran experience who has pushed some of the best the wrestling world has to offer to the limit including former Television champions Marty Scurll & Will Ospreay, Kenny Omega, and current Tag Team champions The Young Bucks. Smile also has prominent wins over Colt Cabana, current WWE UK champion Pete Dunn, and even former ROH World champion Michael Elgin. Though this will be the first official time Smile will enter a ROH ring, the fact is he knows the style and what could come from any Ring of Honor veteran. While preparedness is beneficial, trying to predict what could happen in a match with Mark Briscoe is almost ridiculous. “The Sussex County Chicken” has beaten so many competitors thanks to his unpredictable nature and mastery of the dreaded Redneck Kung Fu. This should be an exhilarating battle that could easily steal the show and potentially pave the way for Smile to make it to America for a ROH event.

Signed for Edinburgh on August 20th is a highly anticipated rematch: Jay Lethal vs. Silas Young!

It had been over two years since these two men shared a ring in singles competition before ROH’s most recent return to Lockport. Then, “The Last Real Man” was just getting his footing in ROH after failing to overcome some of the best ROH had to offer including Mark Briscoe. Jay Lethal, on the other hand, was attempting to return to the mountaintop he once occupied as the ROH Television champion. From their previous encounter that saw Lethal overcome Young, “The Greatest 1st Generation Wrestler” went on to become not only a two-time ROH World Television champion, but also the ROH World champion a year-plus after he bested “The Last Real Man”. Then came this year’s conclusion of the “Reloaded Tour”. The two men fought not once, but twice in one night. Their first encounter was a singles bout that saw the same result from their previous match where Lethal walked away as the victor. Though Jay won the battle that night, the spoils of war went to Silas Young as they both men were involved in the Honor Rumble match. They kicked off the match and wrestled throughout until they were the last two men standing. And in a somewhat shocking twist, Young eliminated the former World champion to earn himself a future ROH World title opportunity. Only two weeks after their clash during the “Tour”, Lethal and Young did battle yet again with “The Last Real Man” being unable to avenge his singles loss while Lethal continued to his quest toward regaining the championship he lost at “Death Before Dishonor XIV”.
It would take another six months before these two men found themselves standing across the ring from one another. During this encounter, Young had the home field advantage and took advantage of the situation to pick up a clean win over “The Franchise of ROH”. Young’s victory gave Silas the belief that he was deserving of more from ROH, but it was ROH management going to Lethal with opportunities presented such as sponsorship commercials. Attacking Lethal to make his point that Jay was less of a man deserving fewer opportunities in comparison to him, Young put a target on his back that Lethal looked to hit literally. Coming close to accomplishing his goal early was Lethal on ROH TV, but Beer City Bruiser took the figurative bullet before a tag match alongside Young against Lethal & Bobby Fish (another man who Silas angered over the last couple of months) turned out successful for them. It seemed Lethal would finally get his revenge at “Best in the World”, but things went south for the former World champion after he pinned Silas. Furious, “Milwaukee’s Worst” attacked Lethal post-match and put him on the shelf by brutalizing Jay with Bruiser’s beer keg before BCB put Lethal through a table courtesy of his frog splash. For over a month, Lethal didn’t make a ROH appearance as he tried to recover and earn accolades elsewhere – plotting his revenge in the process.
It’s incredibly ironic that Young now has the same opportunity presented to him this time three years ago when he took on another ROH franchise player in Kevin Steen. And just like that feud, Young came up short at “Best in the World”; but proved he had to potential of becoming a “big deal” in the company by getting the last laugh & win in their final confrontation. There’s a great chance this could happen again for Silas as Lethal has let his anger get the better of him in the past including the night he lost his ROH World Championship last year. Their previous clashes have been nothing short of fantastic and this one should be no different in another country and both men have the opportunity to establish themselves as a top contender in either the TV or World Heavyweight title divisions.

Foxx Vinyer vs. Eli Isom

Stella Gray vs. Bonesaw Brooks
