ROH TV Episode 313: Style & Substance

By James Bullock Sep 20, 2017 - 11:46 AM print

Last week: Search & Destroy pulled off something of an upset overcoming The Bullet Club’s Young Bucks & the Guerrillas of Destiny.

ROH TV Episode 313
Atlanta, GA

ROH World Six-Man Tag Team champion Adam Page vs. Kenny King
No Code of Honor before the collar & elbow tie up that saw King actually overpower The Bullet Club member. King’s grappling acumen was on point as he countered anything Page had in mind with side headlock takedowns and arm drags. Page picked up the pace, sending his opposition to the floor. Page had a moonsault off the entrance stage in mind, but missed everything. King took advantage of the situation, using a corkscrew asai moonsault to down Page prior to the commercial break.
The show returned with both men slugging it out until Page ducked a haymaker to execute the piledriver out of nowhere. King instinctively rolled to the floor, but “The Hangman” was right on top of him as he whipped Kenny against the steel barricades. Page utilized that dead-lift pumphandle suplex as Caprice Coleman joined the commentators Ian Riccaboni & BJ Whitmer to announce that The Briscoes would be a part of next week’s “Coleman’s Pulpit”. King turned the tides back in his favor, pulling off that Arn Anderson-like spine buster to begin a fiery comeback. Knocking Page to the floor with Eddy Gordo didn’t end well for King as he missed his follow up plancha to be hit with the shooting star press off the apron. Pitching King back in, Page prepared to unleash that Buckshot Lariat when he tripped. King took advantage of the situation, using the chin checker to put “Hangman” in a modified front chancery. Thanks to King’s positioning, Page made it to the ropes to save himself. King had a superplex follow up ready when he had to change his game plan and kick Page in position for the Royal Flush to pick up the three count.

Marty Scurll vs. Rocky Romero
Feeling disrespected, Rocky Romero went for the Diablo Arm Bar early. When Marty Scurll broke free, Romero decided to just thumb him in the eyes, pitch him to the floor, and execute a tope to fire up crowd. Marty recovered, looking for that super kick off the apron. Romero was ready, avoiding the attack, but not the subsequent arm breaker across the ropes when he went to grab the former TV champion. Scurll was all about working over the arm of “Mr. Azucar”, dropping legs, knees & elbows as the show entered another commercial break.
Romero went for the spider’s web avoidance when Scurll caught him with a thrust kick followed by the super kick off the apron. “The Villain” pulled off the Alpamare Waterslide to gain a two count and set up the Crossface Chicken Wing. Hearing the crowd say, “Chicken Wing!” alerted Rocky and allowed him to counter with a roll up. A pinning combination exchange broke out until Rocky went for the sliced bread. Scurll countered with the Chicken Wing, only to lose his grip on the way down and be put in the Diablo. Showing incredible strength, Marty muscled him & Romero off the mat for a turnbuckle bomb-shining wizard combo … that gave Scurll a near fall!
Marty had a moonsault in mind, but hit nothing but canvas. Shining wizard connected for Rocky, but didn’t end this one. Romero was determined to hit the sliced bread, but had to opt for a hurricarana to set up the Diablo again. Scurll couldn’t dead-lift his way out of the hold again, faking a tap out after grabbing the ropes with his legs to save himself both losing the match and suffering damage in the arm bar. Rocky thought he won, only to be forced to fight back yet again after an attack from behind. Romero came off the ropes, taking a big lariat that put him in prime position for a sit-out power slam (Bird of Prey) to finally put Romero down for the pin fall victory.

There was a rundown of the “Death Before Dishonor” card featuring promos from The Motor City Machine Guns and Marty Scurll.

The Briscoes vs. The Kingdom (TK O’Ryan & Vinny Marseglia)
It was Jay Briscoe and the man who bashed him with a crutch in TK O’Ryan apparently starting off when Vinny Marseglia tagged himself in and got kicked in the face for his trouble. Mark was right there with his brother, taking the fight to both men including O’Ryan when he tagged himself in. Blind tag by Marseglia saw Mark get caught with the bicycle kick unexpectedly. The Kingdom utilized a spine buster-flying head-butt combo. Marseglia, unlike his partner trying to show off his technical acumen, simply bit & stomped Mark as the show headed to a commercial break.
“The Sussex County Chicken” landed an enzuguri to make his way to a tag. Jay was on fire, lighting up O’Ryan with strikes while back body dropping an incoming Vinny. Marseglia went underneath the ring for something when Jay used the Timebomb neck breaker on TK to gain a two count. Mark stopped Marseglia from bring in a chair, leaving the weapon in the ring with a furious Jay ready to hit his finisher on the steel. The referee stopped the intended illegal action, but O’Ryan was still in a bad position as both Briscoes just started beating him down. Delaware’s Edge connected for Dem Boys on O’Ryan; leaving him potentially prone to the Froggy Bow. Vinny shoved Mark off the top as O’Ryan pulled Jay to the mat with a neck breaker to set up Marseglia’s Swanton bomb … that gave Vinny a near fall!
Marseglia was crazed, slamming Jay around while O’Ryan grabbed his baseball he brought to the ring during his entrance. Mark tagged in, chopping Vinny into a blind tag. Missing a wild swing with the bat, O’Ryan actually sent Mark into a bicycle kick from Vinny that set up their double team wheelbarrow slam … that gave them a two count thanks to an interfering Jay!
Mark took Marseglia to the floor, diving on him as his brother hit the Jay Driller to finish off O’Ryan to pick up a big win heading into their trios match with the entire Kingdom in Las Vegas.

Next week will see the 2nd Honor Rumble to be shown on ROH TV.

Overall: The final episode before “Death Before Dishonor XV” was the definition of a “hard push” if there ever was one, but essentially what every wrestling company should do the peak interest for an event you want more than just the live audience to pay to see live. Every match had a reason for happening, be it the opening match to emphasize just how ready Kenny King is to win the TV champion, the episode-stealing second bout that saw Marty Scurll present a new weapon – Bird of Prey – coming into his match with Chuck Taylor on the PPV, and The Briscoes having the mental edge over The Kingdom when they battle again with all members of each trio are involved. Between the action was some very interesting developments including the back-story of Cody’s Ring of Honor World champion ring was shown heading into his match with Suzuki. Other than the lack of promos from the people involved in a few of the bigger matches on the PPV card (Jay White, Punishment Martinez, Silas Young, Jay Lethal, Kushida, and, of course, The Young Bucks), the only real flaw about the episode (and in general in regards to the ROH booking) was the handling of Adam Page. Page, now a champion in the company, is still being used as fodder to build up other men instead of gaining a more consistent win streak. While he and King had a great match (maybe a precursor to a rivalry if King wins the TV title), it’s still questionable as to why, just a few days before a major PPV that Page will be involved in as a defending champion, he’d be slated to lose a televised match. This was an epitome of a “go-home” show definitely worthy of you time that might even convince you to check out the pay-per-view as well.
