ROH TV Episode 329: No Time to Relax

By James Bullock Jan 14, 2018 - 7:56 AM print

Last week: It was a best of episode featuring action from ROH’s “War of the Worlds UK” tour from the past summer.

ROH TV Episode 329
1/6/18
Philadelphia, PA

Highlights from “Final Battle” opened the show including Silas Young becoming the new TV champ, The Briscoes defeating Bully Ray & Tommy Dreamer, Jay Lethal cheating his way to victory over Marty Scurll, and Dalton Castle winning the ROH World Championship.

After Ian Riccaboni & Colt Cabana welcomed everyone to the show, Dalton Castle’s music hit to bring out the new ROH World champion and The Boys. Sharp as razor blades, Castle entered The Arena with a crowd chanting, “You deserve it!” Castle, with his bedazzled microphone, stated he made many mistakes in his life, but his time in ROH hasn’t been one of them thanks to proving so many doubters wrong that he’d never be a champion. Castle promised to be more than a big fish in a small pond, “I’m a megalodon swimming through the ocean!” What seemed to be the closing moment of the segment, Jay Lethal made his arrival. “Best in the world!” chants rang out as Lethal sauntered to the ring. Castle was visibly and audibly stunned; stating Lethal has never talked to him in the ring, let alone ask to be his friend on Facebook. Castle was behooved why of all times Lethal would interrupt his promo. Lethal was having fun with Castle’s verbal antics before simply telling the champ he wants a World title shot. Taking a seat on Boy 1, Castle offered Boy 2 to be Lethal’s chair. The fans wanted to see Lethal take a load off and The Boys seemed happy to oblige. Lethal tried, but the situation felt really uncomfortable. When Lethal decided against using Boy 2, Boy 2 became a temporary footrest for Castle. Lethal got serious to tell the champ he wants to be the top contender of the multiple people who will be coming after “The Peacock”. Castle agreed to the terms and declared this one was for The Boys! Punishment Martinez proved Lethal’s statement about people gunning for the gold right as he came through the crowd, attacking the champ with his South From Heaven chokeslam.

A promo for “HonorClub” aired before the commercial break – the ROH streaming service that is, “More than a network.”

In the locker room was The Kingdom so Matt Taven could brag about his recent wins over Jay Lethal and Will Ospreay. With a promise to stop ROH’s attempt to push The Kingdom to the side, Taven promised to make 2018 theirs.

ROH World Television Championship: Silas Young (c) w/ Beer City Bruiser vs. Simon Grimm
Silas Young seemed to be real proud of himself before the initial collar & elbow tie up saw the challenger outmaneuver the titleholder. Showing great strength, Grimm turned a crucifix and sunset flip attempts into power-based maneuvers; only for Young to show his agility with the hurricarana and springboard clothesline heading into the commercial break.
The champ was still in control when the show returned as he propelled off the ropes for something. Instead, Young ran into a flying arm bar attempt. Silas kept a solid base, kneeing his way out of the situation. The knee strike bent Grimm backwards to the point Young couldn’t even pin his contorted body without unfolding him. Grimm got knocked into the fight, responding with forearms & European uppercuts after taking a couple of the prior. Grimm tried to rally the crowd in his favor before unleashing a bridging butterfly suplex. When Young kicked out, Grimm went for the piledriver. Young countered, double stomping Grimm to set up another knee strike when his challenger tried to come off the ropes for a retaliatory attack. Misery connected for Young to help him score his first successful title defense.
Kenny King came out to remind Silas Young about what he did at “Final Battle”: breaking a beer bottle over the former champ’s head to pin him. Young reminded King that when it comes to this business it’s by any means necessary. King was cool about what happened now that he has his rematch, but that doesn’t mean he doesn’t want to fight tonight. King spit beer in an approaching Silas’ eyes before jumping him. Referees and security came out to stop this fight.

Still photos of the action from The Briscoes vs. Dreamer & Ray at “Final Battle” were shown including those not seen on the PPV as Bully Ray left his boots in the middle of the ring.

Also shown was the announcement at “Final Battle” that a Women of Honor champion will be crowned in 2018.

The Briscoes vs. Ryan Nova & Eli Islom
The Briscoes jumped their opponents at the bell with Nova getting the life chopped out of him before he felt that double team shoulder tackle. Eli found himself in the ring with Jay Briscoe, taking a big clothesline after trying to fight his way off the canvas. Mark called for the end, connecting with the Froggy Bow on Islom to pin the young man.
Jay Briscoe took the microphone to formally remind everyone of their status as the baddest tag team on the planet after ending the career of Bully Ray. With that business out of the way, Jay declared Dem Boys are gunning for the World Tag Team title; putting The Motor City Machine Guns on notice.

Silas Young and Beer City Bruiser walked into the promo area with BCB promising to win Tag Team gold while Young deals with Kenny King. Silas gave Bruiser his blessing to get Tag gold after BCB stated he had someone waiting to be his partner.

The Hung Bucks were in the locker room, lamenting over being attacked by Christopher Daniels, Frankie Kazarian & Scorpio Sky – known as “SoCal Uncensored – at “Final Battle”. The Bullet Club’s champions promised to make them pay even if it means giving the new trio a title shot.

Marty Scurll vs. Flip Gordon
There was a picture-in-picture promo by Marty Scurll where he complemented Jay Lethal for doing what he didn’t think was possible: demanding a title shot to get a title shot. Tonight for Scurll is his declaration. The former Television champion found himself stuck in a wristlock. When Scurll decided to show his flipping ability, the fans cheered in approval. It seemed the pro-Scurll crowd wasn’t having any of Flip until Gordon used kip up after kip up to avoid whatever Scurll had in mind before sending him to the floor for a dive feign prior to the commercial.
Gordon’s flips cost him when the show returned as he ran into a European uppercut topped by the suplex against the turnbuckles that saw Flip bounce off the top of his head. Scurll’s focus was his opposition’s neck & back including a stranglehold lungblower. When Marty’s attacks didn’t result in a three count, Scurll got into an argument wit the referee that ended with Scurll getting shoved to his butt. Gordon couldn’t take advantage of the situation, getting super kicked when attempting that handstand head scissors again. Gordon recovered and responded with an enzuguri after getting into a fistfight. Springboard clothesline connected for Gordon as did the slingblade clothesline. Gordon’s Finlay roll-shooting star press combo didn’t end this one in Gordon’s favor prior to the commercial break.
Scurll super kicked Gordon after avoiding a diving attack. Gordon responded with a super kick of his own, only for him to feel the Last Shot … for a near fall!
Gordon recovered, back dropping Scurll in position for a somersault plancha. 450 splash connected for Gordon … to give him a two count!
Gordon’s springboard kick put Scurll in position for a modified falcon arrow. Scurll kicked out, countering the second attempt with the Last Shot to pick up the pin fall.

Overall: The first official episode of the “Final Battle” TV taping turned out to be a strong one that started off with an example of an opening talking segment done right. Castle was both his usual goofy self while mixing in the needed serious edge of a champion who now has the likes of Jay Lethal and Punishment Martinez coming after him. The interactions between Castle and Lethal were fantastic and hopefully this isn’t the last of them in the ring together. There were a lot of promos and interactions beyond the action including the build to Silas Young vs. Kenny King for the TV title, BCB finding another real man to team with, The Hung Bucks and their problems with SoCal Uncensored, and The Briscoes focused on the Tag Team Championship. When it comes to the action itself this was another good showing featuring a highly entertaining main event that gave Scurll a win over a guy gunning for his faction. The opener was almost just as good as the main event with Simon Grimm really coming across as a great addition to the ROH roster if he sticks around. For those who have been waiting for ROH to get the stories rolling again while delivering a strong night of action this is the episode for you.
